She was doing great in school, was very involved in sports, had lots of good friends and a happy family life with her parents and two brothers. \n\nFor as long as she could remember however, Sophie had experienced night terrors (from age 3-6), and tremendous anxiety about being alone at night. She absolutely dreaded bedtime and the prospect of being alone in her bedroom in the dark. The family had tried several things over the years to try and resolve the problem, moving bedrooms several times to see if this would make Sophie more comfortable, staying in the room with Sophie until she fell asleep. Nothing they had tried over the years had made a difference. Most nights Sophie ended up in her parents bedroom when the anxiety and fear became intolerable. \n\nSophie's anxiety was about someone hiding in the room, or coming into the room to harm her while she was sleeping. During my conversation with Sophie there was nothing in her history, in her conscious memory, that could explain where this fear and anxiety was coming from. The anxiety had been there for as long as she could remember, affecting her almost every night, and now her future college plans.\n\nFinding the right homeopathic medicine to help you with your anxiety, depression or any other complaints is in no way dependent on being able to trace what you are experiencing to an actual incidence. Quite often though, we see a situation, illness, medication, or other clues, which may have acted as triggers to the symptoms you are now struggling with, mentally, emotionally or physically.\n\nSophies mom was accompanying her daughter to the first consultation. I asked Sophie if it was ok with her if I had a word with her mother regarding the time she was pregnant with Sophie. Discussing the mothers pregnancy is something I often do with when I treat babies and young children. Often times, the mothers state of health during pregnancy, experiences she might have had during this time, will often lead me to the remedy the child needs.\n\nDuring my conversation with Sophie’s mom, she told me about an acute illness she’d had during the last trimester of her pregnancy with Sophie. The words she used to describe the pain, the terror and fear of how this illness might affect the baby, how this had tormented her at the time, how afraid she had been of losing the baby she was carrying, were precisely the same story of Sophie’s experience with her fear and anxiety. The words mother and daughter used to describe their experiences were completely identical (before i started talking to mom, she had not thought of the illness during her pregnancy for many, many years, and never discussed it with Sophie).\n\nI prescribed the homeopathic remedy Culex Musca (Mosquito) for Sophie. Just two single doses in total, to take within 24 hours. The remedy was chosen based on Sophie’s specific symptoms and how she experienced her anxiety  (confirmed by mothers experience during pregnancy). Homeopathy is always tailored to each individual and never given strictly based on a specific diagnosis.\n\nI saw Sophie again during our follow-up appointment in June, four weeks after her first appointment. She was much improved by then, able to sleep in her own bedroom most nights, but still anxious about the upcoming move to an out of state college. We repeated the same remedy, and made another follow-up appointment 4 weeks later. During the second follow-up in July all the anxiety and fear had gone. This was the last time Carol ever heard her husbands voice. \n\nSteve's afternoon run usually lasted 45 min. to an hour before dinner. Symptoms come on quickly, and the person is unusually restless and anxious. Symptoms may start after exposure to dry, cold wind. Shivering and cold waves can pass through the body with the fever. The face may be flushed with constricted pupils.\n\nArsenicum Album (Ars)\nThe symptoms of an Arsenicum flu consist of marked restlessness and anxiety, hot face and cold body. The restlessness can lead to exhaustion and collapse. Vomiting and diarrhoea may also be present, with chills and rigor following the fever. The patient will be thirsty for small sips of water and want constant company. They may have a fear of death.\n\nBelladonna (Bell.)\nA Belladonna type of flu usually starts suddenly. The face will be hot, the skin red, the eyes glazed, and the pupils possibly dilated. The patient may complain of a throbbing headache and feel worse for motion and jarring, or for being bumped. The fever can be very high but with little or no thirst. Hands and feet are icy cold even though the body is hot. There may also be delirium with the fever. Very sensitive, the person feels worse for light, being touched, noise. etc. Symptoms worse at 3pm.\n\nBryonia Alba (Bry.)\nBryonia flu’s are gradual rather than sudden in onset and progress slowly. The patient is irritable, and prefers to be left alone. All symptoms, such as severely aching muscles or joints, are worse for movement and better for rest and being still. The patient will bevery thirsty for large but infrequent gulps of water. They also have dry skin, a coated tongue, cracked lips, or a left-sided headache. During the delirium of the fever, they may particularly ask to go home even though already there.\n\nEupatorium Perfoliatum (Eup-per.)\nInfluenza with a very high fever and severe aching in the muscles and the bones. The patient feels as if their bones are breaking or broken. They will be chilly, sometimes with rigors (shaking) and may desire cold drinks even though they will be chilled by them. They can be thirsty just before the chill and have a severe headache as the fever peaks. Symptoms worse between 7 to 9am.\n\nGelsemium (Gels.)\nGelsemium is one of the most commonly needed flu remedies. Symptoms develop gradually. The patient feels heavy, weak, lethargic, and dull. The weakness is accompanied by trembling. Eyes feel very heavy, can not keep them open. Limbs ache and shivers may run up and down the spine. They usually have a heavy headache that starts in the back of the head and radiates to the forehead. The headache may be relieved by passing urine. Eyelids will droop and there will be weakness and heaviness of the head and limbs.\n\nNux vomica (Nux-v.)\nThe person needing Nux vomica for their flu will be sensitive, irritable, and snappy. They will be extremely sensitive to drafts and cold – even the slightest motion of air as they move under the bed-covers will create shivers. They will be easily irritated and bothered by light and noise. Insomnia can be a problem and symptoms are worse in the morning.\n\nRhus toxicodendron (Rhus-t.)\nThe Rhus-t flu consist of restlessness and aching limbs in which the patient must move almost constantly to ease pain, even when trying to sleep. The joints can feel stiff. The flu may be triggered by, or worsened by cold and damp.
