RSS is not as rare as you would think. More and more I am seeing people coming to me with what has been diagnosed as stubborn eczema that is no longer responding to their steroid cream. I would argue that at this point the body is addicted to the creams. This is referred to as Topical Steroid Addiction  (TSA) – meaning your body has become less responsive to the steroids so you have to use increasing amounts and strengths of steroids to get relief from symptoms.\n\n![rss!.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmcdX4jNugawAUz1Hypt2uPfVpQSxs8YzwSkSwJCzhmVkt/rss!.jpg)\n\nSome of these symptoms can be present whilst still using steroids, and some appear after steroids are stopped and the body goes into Topical Steroid Withdrawal (TSW) \n\nI am not convinced there is a ‘safe’ way to use topical steroids, but long term use puts you at more risk. Not everyone who uses steroids long term will develop RSS, but then I also have seen people who used them on and off for just a couple of months (following advice from their doctor) who develop the symptoms.\n\n\n**So why are steroids so bad?**\n\nTopical steroids work in the following ways:\n\nThey work by vasoconstriction (they constrict blood vessels) the more potent the steroid the more vasoconstriction they produce. \n\nOintments tend to be more vasoconstrictive than creams (I am guessing because they absorb slower and therefore have longer on the skin)\n\nIf there is urea or salicylic acid in the ingredients then this can increase the penetration making them more potent\n\nUsing a steroid followed by an occlusive <a href=\"https://tracywhite.co.uk/2019/08/05/whats-wrong-with-my-emollient/\"> increases the absorption into the system. The British Association of Dermatologists advise that ‘emollients should not be applied shortly after application of a topical steroid, and that an interval of 30 minutes is recommended between applications of either agent’\n\n\n**So what can homeopathy do for eczema and RSS / TSW?**\n\nI see in my practice homeopathy doing some amazing things for skin conditions of all types. Often the people I meet have been through the modern medicine system (which tells them homeopathy is not effective) but yet they have reached the conclusion that steroids are not effective, and in fact they have caused them (or their child) considerable physical and emotional damage. \n\nTreating a case of eczema in a child (without a lot of steroid suppression) is relatively more straightforward than addressing RSS in an adult. When I treat someone with RSS we have to decipher what are symptoms caused by a drug and what are symptoms of the original skin condition (that steroids were used to treat)  \n\nMy approach for RSS is a gentle one, the body is super sensitive, the skin is very reactive and often the adrenals are struggling. By using remedies that support the gut, vascular system, adrenals and the other organs of detoxification we can help take a load off of the skin. When the gut functions optimally it becomes a pathway to detox.\n\nSometimes after someone has gone through TSW they find the original eczema making a comeback, whilst this can be really disheartening it is actually a positive sign to me, it shows that the steroid suppression has abated and the body is one again expressing itself naturally. This can then lead to more remedies that are indicated for the true problem, not a problem that a drug created.\n\nThere is no fast track for RSS/TSW, it has taken the body years to get where it is and that does not fix overnight. It is a process of healing, with gradual improvements that are maintained and built upon. I am always committed to everyone who comes for help, and this is how homeopathy gets its results, by commitment from patient and homeopath. \n\nWe know quick fixes are not what they seem – steroid creams are testament to this, sure they masked the eczema in the early days / years, but over time they were not the solution, far from it.\n\n![D123.jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmUqiNFw5tV8V8jVydjonFaoruyR9kFXK9CXNyZb3Yv1TN/D123.jpeg)\n\nHomeopathy looks at YOU as an individual, it seeks to help all symptoms, physical and also mental/emotional, and this is a HUGE factor in TSW/RSS. The impact it has on you, your family, your sleep and your mental health. The modern medicine approach would just throw anti-depressants, immune-suppressants and more toxic drugs at you (and sometimes this is ok in the short term to get you through the extreme lows that happen during this withdrawal process) But long term these are not the solution.\n\n We are not our skin, our mind and our organs separated, modern medicine needs to realise this in order to fully heal people. Your TSW journey is unique to you and homeopathy is a system of medicine that knows this, its ethos is built upon these principles – there is no remedy for TSW RSS or eczema, but there are remedies that can help how **YOU** are affected. \n\n**What really grates on me is that the medical profession still takes no responsibility for the damage their drugs are causing, suffers of TSW/RSS have to do their own research, are dismissed by dermatologists – it’s all in your head, or its just severe mismanaged eczema (because you refuse to use a cream anymore that isn’t working) often I am told by sufferers that they are ashamed to speak out about their condition for fear of people telling them it’s self-inflicted for turning their backs on the advice from their practitioner. This has to stop! No wonder this condition has such a huge impact on sufferers emotionally, they are the outcasts of a flawed medicine system, they are not validated for their suffering and yet their suffering is clear to see. Some of them several years. Mums on a cycle of repeat prescriptions dished out by a GP, without question.\n\nWhen we look at the NICE guidelines for corticosteroid use https://bnf.nice.org.uk/treatment-summary/topical-corticosteroids.html\n we see that it is advised that even mild (0.1-2.5 %) topical steroids are only used for a duration of 1-2 weeks on infants & children, this is because children are more susceptible to side effects. In rare cases adrenal suppression and Cushing’s syndrome can occur.  I have seen children on very potent strength steroids, like Betnovate, applied daily.\n\n\nIn the UK in 2015 almost 27 MILLION prescriptions were written out for topical skin treatments, costing £169 MILLION! Figures suggest 15 MILLION people in the UK are affected by eczema, to varying severity. This is a massive amount of money for a treatment that doesn’t actually address the eczema, it palliates the skin symptoms, but the root cause is not addressed and the skin then becomes reliant on steroids to suppress the eczema. I have had parents tell me they are religiously applying a steroid and the eczema just appears on another part of the body - which hasn’t been affected before. These poor parents are literally chasing eczema around their children's bodies.\n\nIt seems a joke to me that Homeopathy is becoming less available on the NHS, it is so effective at treating eczema, it doesn’t suppress, has no side effects and won’t thin or damage a childs delicate skin (and I have seen my fair share of adults now suffering with long term steroid skin damage because of steroid overuse). **£169 MILLION is being spent on a cream that does not cure the condition**\n\nThe irony is that homeopathy is affordable, gentle and non addictive - so it has no appeal to a pharmaceutical company. But I continue to wage my war on steroids. I know there is a better way than these topical creams. I know that homeopathy heals in a way that is more than skin deep, it may not always be an overnight fix, but its goal is to heal at a far deeper level than a cream could ever reach. \n\n**Conventional medicine says eczema is not curable, and this is true within the capabilities of conventional drugs. He came for his eczema, which was extremely severe. It had begun at 9 weeks old. Joe was a very allergic child with a constant streaming nose and a history of ear infections. To date he had over 12 courses of antibiotics for either his skin, ears or chest infections. He had been hospitalised on several occasions for his eczema, which would leave him itchy, red raw and screaming in agony. When his skin flared there was barely an inch that wasn’t open, sore or weeping.\n\nJoe was on steroid creams applied around the clock, and piriton for his wheeze and allergies (hay fever) *Mum said she felt sad that they couldn't enjoy the simple things like going to swimming pools, messy play or holidays, as everything flared Joe's skin.* \n\nJoe had a bit of an aggressive side to him. He would be very slap happy with his peers and would often bite his Mum when he became frustrated. He had a constant runny nose and a bit of a wheeze on his chest. High fevers and swollen glands were a regular occurrence.\n\nI started Joe off on Tub 200c, hoping to see some relief to his eczema suffering, I figured his behaviour was an outward expression of the pain and irritation he was feeling from his skin.\n\nJuly 2018: six weeks later and Joe is a different child. I cannot believe the transformation. The skin is incredible! The nose has dried up and the aggression is barely there are no biting. The only eczema remaining is a couple of patches in the folds of his elbows, which is where it initially began (this is a good sign for a homeopath as it tells us that the body is healing and symptoms are resolving in the reverse order they appeared) Mum has not used any steroids or piriton for 6 weeks and has torn up her repeat prescriptions!\nShortly after the Tub 200c Joe developed a hacking cough that lasted 3-4 days, he was sick a few times from the cough and then it cleared. His sleep improved and his skin started to dry out and heal up. I repeated the Tub 200c as there is still some residual eczema and a slight trace of aggression is still there.\n\nSeptember 2018: On the third appointment the skin of the elbows has healed further, nothing is visible to the eye and the only sign of the eczema is a slight sandpapery feel to the arm creases.\nBehaviour wise Joe is a lot more content and there has been no aggression towards anyone. The chest is better and generally Joe is a different child from the one i met 3 months ago. Last time I heard all was going well and the skin is still clear. Possibly some more hay fever work to do in the spring if it becomes an issue, but for now he’s eczema free and off the steroids, which is my goal for any child (or adult) in Joe’s situation.\n\n**Joe responded very fast to treatment, children have a very good capacity to heal when given the right remedy. A well matched constitutional remedy will have a broad action on the body. Not just on the physical complaints, but also mental & emotional factors too. So for Joe the skin was just one element to his case, the weak chest, repeated ear infections and the aggression were all calmed by the same remedy, a remedy that suited him as an individual. Or maybe they seem quite happy to to go several days without going? A trip to the GP will usually result in either Laxido, Lactulose or Movicol, aimed to get them moving again, which usually they do, *but what do you do when you have to rely on increasing doses of laxatives daily to keep your little ones bowels moving?\nWhat happens once you’ve added sachet upon sachet daily? What help is there after the rather unpleasant Movicol disimpaction regime?*\n\nWhat I have learned after treating multiple cases of infant constipation is that the overwhelming majority of these cases, the child is afraid to poo. At some point it has been incredibly painful for them and they now avoid a repeat of the experience at all cost. Holding onto stools causes the bowel to expand and after repeated ignoring the ‘urge’ many children simply lose the sensation to go. Movicol does not address this! Many parents using Movicol will testify that despite the stools being softer the child will still fight the urge. \n\nSometimes in cases of extreme constipation or impaction there is an element of control. A young child is in control of very little in their environment, with the exception of sleep, eating and the potty/toilet. So often when they feel out of control they will start to look at places where they can kick back a bit.  \n\nWhatever the reason for the constipation, homeopathy is a very effective way of getting to the root cause. Matching remedies to symptoms, helping to calm the fear your child may be feeling, supporting the organs of the digestive system and using remedies that help a developing system all can be very beneficial in finding a long lasting solution to the problem. \n\n**Laxatives don’t work in this way. They are not looking to find the cause, as they assume the cause to be a physical back-up of stools, which technically it is, but the finer point that laxatives miss is that constipation is merely a symptom, and unless the bigger picture is taken into account then we get nowhere in resolving the problem effectively.** \n\nI’ve treated many cases of constipation in all ages from babies through to adults. Homeopathy is an invaluable tool in the treatment of bowel issues and the many individual triggers that cause such a problem to arise. Before you commit to a foreseeable future of laxatives, maybe consider homeopathy as a more natural and gentle option.",
