bodyI too am finding joy in using Steemit as my place to document my birding experience. I had used a private blog previously, but it was really an online place to post my notes-to-self as nobody looked at them unless I went to a place like Facebook to link to it, or specifically emailed a link to a friend. I am feeling like there is the very beginning of a birding community on Steemit. Still, the inertia to make it grow is significant. I am working to develop a coherent and convincing reason why birders should "flock" to Steemit. Among my thoughts are that it is decentralized, and we are not supporting a huge corporation like Microsoft (Blogger), Facebook, or other huge for-profit corporation, but instead supporting each other and the greater Steem community. In addition it gives us a vehicle to send support to steemians around the world. As a not insignificant benefit we get to earn Steem as a viable cryptocurrency ourselves. Once I get this together in my own mind, I'll be ready to make a big push to recruit birders to the platform. I'd love to recruit you and a few others, like @katysavage @pardinus and @thomasjmitchell to join the recruiting team. Let me know what you think and send any suggestions as to my "elevator talk" on why to move over to Steemit. Thanks.

bodyI'm sure you know, but this is for the rest of your readers. Albatrosses have the ability to "lock" their wings in position, so that they don't need to use muscle power to hold their wings stiffly, and can simply adjust their feathers slightly to maneuver. They also have learned to use the wind to help them gain altitude. They turn slightly into the wind to arc upward, and the effortlessly glide down toward the surface until they need to go up again, when they angle slightly into the wind again. This allows them to cover fabulous distances using little of their own energy. Incredibly cool birds.

bodyNice photos. Scaly-brested Munia has also become established enough in Southern California that it is now officially "listable" and in addition a Pin-tailed Whydah, a brood parasite that preferentially lays its eggs in Scaly-breasted Munia nests is also thriving. One invasive species begets another in this case it seems. Good post. Thanks.

body![DSC_4687.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmeP4ZFkLUMEJVt5HQGsnafpvKxwy16KeL3L86rAo3LJGu/DSC_4687.jpg) Male Yellow Warbler singing. Today was a really nice day of birding in Kitsap County, WA with Ken. We didn't meet until 8:30 AM so I could recover from a late night at the Mariner's last night, a good 6-3 victory with Felix Martinez the winning pitcher, and Nelson Cruz hitting a 3-run bomb. First stop was at a place near Ken's home, he calls DNR, a dirt road into department of natural resources property, where at least two MacGillivray's Warblers were singing. These a were first-of-the-year species for me. Next at Chico Creek where at a pretty high tide we looked for shorebirds without much success, but did find any except the obligatory Killdeer. From here we headed to a really large natural area called Clear Creek, where trails and boardwalks dissect a wetland, meadow and brushy property with several small muddy ponds that attract migrating shorebirds. Almost immediately I heard a Yellow Warbler singing, and he gave us pretty good photo opportunities, see above and below. ![DSC_4690.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQma7FomDQKLPc4zdUCWPSpxWFfToPxt4u9q8eWmftgU8RY/DSC_4690.jpg) Further along we came to several muddy shallow ponds and almost immediately found two pair of breeding Spotted Sandpipers. ![DSC_4721.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmf4fDiwbUYtBdMaazy1MSuQzJwEnztAyX6Bd727cvWJZs/DSC_4721.jpg) These Spotted Sandpipers are easily identified by their distinctive appearance when seen well, but also by their fluttery wings in flight and their tendency to constantly bob their tails. A little bit later Ken spotted a much more skittish Solitary Sandpiper. I got photos, but much more distant and low quality. These are a much harder species to find in our area, seen mostly at this time of year during their northward migratio to their breeding grounds. We also saw 3 Least Sandpipers, a common migrant at this time of kyear, and flushed one Wilson's Snipe. ![DSC_4736.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmUZm8ULRgy5sWLTyLbgSa4U9t8ho2aiL7Wcmts3fLwKYh/DSC_4736.jpg) These Least Sandpipers are our most common "peep" most of the year in the Puget Sound area, and our only peep with yellow legs. At our last stop at Long Lake County Park we immediately heard a singing Warbling Vireo, which we finally managed to get good looks at but no photo, and did get photos of a breeding pair of Killdeer with recently hatched young. Like most sandpipers the young are born with feathers and open eyes and walk around almost immediately feeding themselves. ![DSC_4840.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmNfMpKzKnWAp9ugHec5NjquktnFgnek7NiSc7iHx5jcBe/DSC_4840.jpg) Two very young Killdeer. The parents were nearby doing their "broken wing" display to draw attention away from the young. ![DSC_4830.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmaXsPjooNRS4mzFq6CQnuBK87CN1GqxkWTkDpVHie8Krr/DSC_4830.jpg) We finished the day with 55 species, including four first of the year Washington State species for me. Days like today make it great to be alive and in the Pacific Northwest during spring migration. Good birding. Steem on!

Almost immediately I heard a Yellow Warbler singing, and he gave us pretty good photo opportunities, see above and below.\n\n![DSC_4690.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQma7FomDQKLPc4zdUCWPSpxWFfToPxt4u9q8eWmftgU8RY/DSC_4690.jpg)\n\nFurther along we came to several muddy shallow ponds and almost immediately found two pair of breeding Spotted Sandpipers. \n\n![DSC_4721.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmf4fDiwbUYtBdMaazy1MSuQzJwEnztAyX6Bd727cvWJZs/DSC_4721.jpg)\nThese Spotted Sandpipers are easily identified by their distinctive appearance when seen well, but also by their fluttery wings in flight and their tendency to constantly bob their tails.\n\nA little bit later Ken spotted a much more skittish Solitary Sandpiper. I got photos, but much more distant and low quality. These are a much harder species to find in our area, seen mostly at this time of year during their northward migratio to their breeding grounds. We also saw 3 Least Sandpipers, a common migrant at this time of kyear, and flushed one Wilson's Snipe.\n\n![DSC_4736.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmUZm8ULRgy5sWLTyLbgSa4U9t8ho2aiL7Wcmts3fLwKYh/DSC_4736.jpg)\nThese Least Sandpipers are our most common \"peep\" most of the year in the Puget Sound area, and our only peep with yellow legs. \n\nAt our last stop at Long Lake County Park we immediately heard a singing Warbling Vireo, which we finally managed to get good looks at but no photo, and did get photos of a breeding pair of Killdeer with recently hatched young. Like most sandpipers the young are born with feathers and open eyes and walk around almost immediately feeding themselves. \n\n![DSC_4840.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmNfMpKzKnWAp9ugHec5NjquktnFgnek7NiSc7iHx5jcBe/DSC_4840.jpg)\nTwo very young Killdeer.\n\nThe parents were nearby doing their \"broken wing\" display to draw attention away from the young.\n\n![DSC_4830.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmaXsPjooNRS4mzFq6CQnuBK87CN1GqxkWTkDpVHie8Krr/DSC_4830.jpg)\n\nWe finished the day with 55 species, including four first of the year Washington State species for me. \n\nDays like today make it great to be alive and in the Pacific Northwest during spring migration. \n\nGood birding. Steem on!",

titleShaquem Griffin Seahawks Draftee and Amniotic Band Syndrome
bodyI am really excited about the Seahawks pick of Shaquem Griffin in the 5th round of the NFL Draft today. I'm excited for lots of reasons, not the least of which is that I think he will really help our team. In addition it is really cool to have twin brothers on the Seahawks. Without a doubt the most notable thing about Shaquem Griffin is that he was born with complications of amniotic band syndrome. This is a quite uncommon condition where instead of the two layers of the amniotic sac that unborn babies live in forming a perfect sac, the inner layer of the sac, the amnion, separates in a way that forms a band of tissue that can entangle part of a fetus causing that part to grow in a deformed way. In the most severe cases it can entangle the head or torso endangering the life of a fetus. More commonly it becomes wrapped around a digit or limb. ![amniotic-band-syndrome-illustration.png](https://steemitimages.com/DQmNfJ2DvSQPFzVeLKS7ngQ2CzY2rfxa3AjTZr8jDdjCVaV/amniotic-band-syndrome-illustration.png) Image from the USCF article referenced below. With technology available today sometimes this condition is diagnosed prenatally, and in select cases prenatal surgery can be done to release the entangled part of the fetus before birth, allowing some recovery of the damaged body part. When the Griffin twins were in utero this technology was not available, even if a prenatal diagnosis had been made. Here is a link to a good article about amniotic band syndrome for readers who are interested. https://fetus.ucsf.edu/amniotic-band-syndrome Shaquem Griffin did not let the fact that he had his left hand amputated at age 4 stop him from becoming a great football player. I am excited to see how he does with the Seahawks. I hope that he makes the team, plays well enough to help us win, and has a long and successful NFL career. If he does not I have no doubt that using the determination he has already shown he will achieve great things with the rest of his life. Great pick Hawks. Go Griffin twins. Go Hawks.

body![DSC_4619.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmXpnvMXaH7ixtJPXXJbDzUqNus8hKF7CMezKyhowFRXvE/DSC_4619.jpg) American White Pelicans. Today was the day I moved to one bird away from the 253 in the 253 club. This "club" is made up of birders who have 253 species of birds on their Pierce County, WA life list, where the telephone area code is 253. It is pretty exclusive, and if (when) I see my next, i.e. 253rd species I'll be just the 6th member. Yesterday, while I was at the coast helping lead the shorebird festival trip Christopher Clark found 4 American White Pelicans at the 56th Street Stormwater Ponds. I had already arranged to stay last night in Ocean Shores with my son, and we kept those plans. This morning Will Brooks located a Black-headed Gull at the McNeil Street overlook, and I had visions of getting 2 new Pierce and one ABA lifer in the same day. We stopped on the way home to try for the gull, but the gaggle of birders on site had no success so after a quick look I decided to cut my losses there, get my son to drop me off at home, and dash to Puyallup for the pelicans. Sure enough, as predicted, the 4 AWPE were roosting on the shore between the 2nd and 3rd ponds, and before I left they were swimming for better photos. They are a magnificent bird, huge, white with a large orange bill and pouch, and black wing tips. You can see the black wing tip on one of the preening birds in this photo below. Also note the raised ridge on the upper bill, which is an appendage that grows in for the breeding season, and drops off in the non-breeding season. ![DSC_4622.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmPG37qBeaoX5182PdCaxLUNX1HptxMkfZ3TFmXzfn92MC/DSC_4622.jpg) While there I had chances to photograph a female Common Yellowthroat, a typically secretive bird, as well as the American Pipit and Savannah Sparrows you can see below. ![COYT_4612.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmbcxV6VNeefHQa4DhDQh4HKdz5f2b1svgdjk4VfZ4pckm/COYT_4612.jpg) Female Common Yellowthroat, a member of the new-world warbler family that generally stays not too far from water, and in thick brushy areas. ![DSC_4614.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmX8JEywocxUpmPo3XVo4hqFVU9ZhB5ZewrKwLqERdCGsu/DSC_4614.jpg) American Pipit. This \"club\" is made up of birders who have 253 species of birds on their Pierce County, WA life list, where the telephone area code is 253. \n\nWe stopped on the way home to try for the gull, but the gaggle of birders on site had no success so after a quick look I decided to cut my losses there, get my son to drop me off at home, and dash to Puyallup for the pelicans. body![DSC_4417.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmco5CiynTi1cBgxghr3pUW6raY13NFDNyZDot62W7THvU/DSC_4417.jpg) Great Blue Heron Another sunny day today, and migration is starting to pick up. First stop today was at the middle waterway on the Tacoma Tide Flats. A small flock of Least Sandpipers were the best birds there, and increased numbers of shorebirds every day migration is getting more exciting. Next was a mainstay of Tacoma birding, the Gog-li-hi-ti mitigated marsh area. This area was a bit disappointing, with nothing really of note except another 45 Least Sandpipers. Next I headed to the Fife side of the tide flats, and checked out the shorebird area at the end of Alexander Ave. where I got 11 Black Turnstones, 5 Least Sandpipers and 2 Dunlin, one in basic plumage, the other in early pre-alternate molt with just a few black belly feathers coming into view. No Western Sandpipers though, so I did not see this soon-to-be first-of-year species for Pierce County yet. ![DSC_4412.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmNheSPEX5Qsiqw4W3MHXw6JcvXpT8AJhjifNKgWBtt2Ta/DSC_4412.jpg) Black Turnstones On the way back out I saw a flooded field and stopped and got nice looks at a pair of Cinnamon Teal. They are one of the more spectacular ducks we see in this area. ![DSC_4430.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmUSzrC5odd5sLpiPbbF85kCdFGg8Qb9pFydP7E5vjMm5z/DSC_4430.jpg) Cinnamon Teal After Rotary I was driving back to Tacoma on the River Road when our text chain came through as Will Brooks texted about a male Yellow-headed Blackbird at the 56th Street Stormwater Ponds, so I stopped there and the bird was right on the fence as I started to walk into the area. This is a tough species in our county, and Will came through with a FOY species for himself, me and at least Bruce so far. ![DSC_4477.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmZ5Yr2XZ1XY9QWdf6taZMkTcTA8foikwoAF9Vyqtg2SEq/DSC_4477.jpg) ![DSC_4490.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmdWs4KfSbp8J6jeK2FSjYn8saYousCzmNSXGcG4vEqYgs/DSC_4490.jpg) Yellow-headed Blackbird A nice day of birding today.
