Now let’s get into it… First and foremost, I do not like taking pills, I hate it for lack of better words. I only take a few vitamins that have multiple benefits. I try to eat a nutrient pack diet so I would need less supplements that’s were the smoothies come to play. Here is a list of vitamins I use and why: Tip 1 Cold/viruses: Vitamin C 1000mg daily. Since I have been taking vitamin C + veggie/fruit smoothie, I rarely get sick. Every once in a while, I’ll sneeze but that’s it. It’s been three years, I can count on my hand how many times I’ve been sick. i Would get sick all the time, with upper respiratory infections, flu or strep throat. But not lately! Tip 2 seasonal allergies/sinus: grape seed extract 200mg capsules. I know what you are thinking, grape seed extract what?! Any time my eyes start to get watery/itchy or sinuses are giving me trouble I would take natural grape seed extract one daily until symptoms dissipate. Tip 3 multi-vitamin composed of only zinc/calcium/magnesium= Menstrual issues: Studies have shown that lack of magnesium is the cause for a lot of women menstrual issue. My cycle consist of irregularity, heavy flow, breast pain/tenderness and cramps. However, since i started taking these vitamins it has improved. My menstrual cycle is not as heavy and cramping/breast pain/tenderness has decreased. Tip 4 nutrition, nutrition, nutrition: Its great to have supplements, but nothing beats eating healthy and exercise. Adding more vegetables and dark fruit, such as berries to your daily diet will help your body heal and function at its optimal level!

bodyFor those of you that are new to veggie/fruit smoothies, I advise to start with more fruit, then gradually add vegetables one a week, so you wont be in bathroom too much and you get used to the taste. Use fresh or frozen fruit. 1st sweet tooth smoothie: 1 red apple 1/2 cup pineapple 1/2 strawberries 1 cup of kale 2 cups of distilled water Key is to added more vegetable, for more nutrients and minerals. Gradually, add green leafy vegetables such as spinach, collard greens or parsley. Also there is brussel sprouts, cauliflower, carrots, celery, cucumber and beets, just to name a few. 2nd my eye catcher smoothie: https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-BWtZxJU2G1w/V7u9goa_n0I/AAAAAAAAAHQ/9MUIoLwwvv0bPiaos0sv65jvQygy8nxQACLcB/s1600/IMG_2817.JPG 2 large carrot 1 red apple 1 cup spinach/kale 1 cup of coconut water I drink this when I was seeing floaters in my vision and eye dryness, I stop seeing spots, and colors were more vibrant. 3rd The mean green smoothie: https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-TOdFTVfVPik/V7u9XcdSCwI/AAAAAAAAAHM/Kh2-VccMafkWCnbNE6Jv-ucJACFtm4G8QCLcB/s1600/IMG_2913.JPG 2 cups of spinach 2 cups of kale 1 cups of pineapple 2 cups of distilled water I drink this after every workout. If you need more sweet add more fruit, pineapple or mango. 4th Vampire smoothie: https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-VLqdtd1KKf4/V7vCzyugB4I/AAAAAAAAAHo/umRoY8j3dOsiGBcikUOS6h3zjuNkvLK7wCLcB/s1600/IMG_2914.JPG 2 medium beets 1 cups of mixed fruit, pineapple/strawberry, mango, blueberries 1 cup of kale 2 cups of filtered water Most important tip: wash your produce thoroughly: https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-1MR6BfZ9o0o/V7u_-vxhaSI/AAAAAAAAAHc/z1I5fKb0ZB4lMzbE6af60vJ5ZGD1OtI3gCLcB/s1600/IMG_2848.JPG I hope this helps, let me know if you need more info... bodyIt’s 8am, I just clocked into work and the phone rings, I picked up the phone and said, “Hello, this is nurse Tiffany, how may I assist you?” “Yes, ma’am, I have been having sharp chest pain, shortness of breath and very weak, what should I do?” The patient states. “Remain calm, I want you to call 9-11 and tell them to take you to the nearest hospital. The reason why you call 9-11, is when you go to the hospital via ambulance you don’t have to wait as long, they will see you right away.” I said. “okay I will call now, thank you.” After I hung up the phone, I updated the doctor and wrote a note. Five minutes later I get another phone call. “Hello, this nurse Tiffany, how my I assist you?” “Yes, ma’am, I called you early about chest pain? Well, the nurse from the insurance company told me It’s not that bad, I can drive to nearest urgent care.” I paused for five seconds and held the phone because I could not believe what I was hearing. “No ma’am, it can be a heart attack or a pulmonary embolism an ER is more equip to help you. call 9-11 and go to emergency room immediately.” I hung up the phone in shock, I explained to the doctor what happen, he couldn’t believe it. Later that day, the patient called to update the doctor. She thanked me, and said the hospitalist diagnosed her with pulmonary embolism. I was so relieved she listen. To think, the insurance company was trying to save money, instead of a life! Now I have to argue with a fellow nurse, who’s trying to save insurance company money. What about patient advocacy? Code of ethics? It hurts me, more and more to see patients being treated like this. I wish this was a fiction story, sad to say it really happened. On another note, there are insurance companies that are rejecting coverage for medication and treatments. I sit on the phone for hours doing prior authorization and in the meantime the patient can’t receive their chemotherapy or blood thinner medication, because the insurance company needs more information and have to do clinical investigation to see if the medication is relevant for coverage. It’s sad to say, they’re not new medications, these patients been on these medications for years! Their life depends on it. Word of Advice: You as a patient have to be a consumer! Try to get the generic brand of medication. Some insurance company, will cover 90-day supply, then a 30-day supply, which will be cheaper. If there is no generic medication and this med you’re currently taking is working for you. Then ask you insurance company if a prior authorization is needed to get coverage. If so, have you doctor office do the authorization so you can get coverage. Or ask for another medication that would be covered by your insurance. You have to be your own advocate! This does not mean google your symptoms and diagnosing yourself. It means, go to medical doctor for an assessment. If you are not satisfied with health care you being provided, then ask questions until you are satisfied. This is your health! if you don’t understand something, tell them to explain it to you so you can understand. Always have a pin and paper handy to write notes down Don’t hide important information, give the medical provider all of the symptoms you’re presently experiencing in detail. Lastly, Go with your Gut instinct!

bodyIn my early twenties I just wanted to have fun, I thought about marriage, but deep down inside I was afraid of commitment. Internally I would sabotage relationships, It’s hard to admit, I really didn’t feel like I deserve love. I felt, I had to earn it. It’s impossible to please and make someone happy, who are not happy with themselves. That’s what I attracted, a couple of insecure guys, who did commit, but had a lot of issues such as anger, alcohol or immaturity. I am grateful for the experiences, even though it was hard, it taught me some valuable lessons. Unfortunately, I caused a heart break, by not being honest with myself. I entered a relationship with a person I knew was not right for me, I knew I could not give him what he needed. When I finally faced my past relationship experiences, I had to put my big girl panties on and own up to my responsibility. I made it my business to apologize to him for the hurt and unnecessary stress I added to his life, because I was not ready. Happy to say he has forgiven me and we’ve been friends since. Now that I am in my thirties, I know what I want and my intuition is heightened! I started dating smarter and less selfish. I know this sound strange, however, when I meet guys, I honestly can tell what they want by small talk. I can determine that I will not be a good fit for them, tell them up front respectfully and don’t waste their time. I refused to compromise and settle because of loneliness or sadness, it’s only a state of mind, and in a moment I will get over it. Recently my friends have titled me the Nope girl! Nope I don’t get drunk and oops I ended up in someone bed, there is no such thing as an oops. Nope I don’t see a co-worker who I know is a groupie and just let him tag a long because he makes me feel good about myself or tells me how beautiful I am, I have a mirror for that. Nope, I am not the girl who need to help a married man deal with marital issues, that’s what his wife is for. Nope, I am not the girl who wants a twenty-year older man, because I think their mature and I can relate to, that’s what my dad’s for. Nope, I don’t need a man to pay my bills and be his everything, I have a job for that. Those are some examples of why they call me the nope girl. Life is too short to allow crap in it. I rather be happy single or with someone that is worth being with. At this point in my life no one is worth a heart break.

bodyOne of the cravings I had to conqueror is salt. When I am stressed a work or life, I immediately start to crave salty snacks. I would walk right to the vending machine and purchase my favorite bag of chips. Dealing with stress at the job was difficulty for me. As I mentioned in an early post it took pray, mediation and exercise that enable me to deal with it. I made sure every morning I would pray and read scriptures to refocus my minds, and I joined cycling class in the evening to release any tension. Even though I did these things, and gain control over how I reacted to stress. I still craved salty snacks. So then I did some researching, and found that craving salt means you are lacking minerals. So I started drinking veggie/fruit smoothie two times a daily and eat a vegetable based diet. I find the more I drink the smoothies, I did not crave salt. I know this is drastic, and some of you have busy schedules. Here is a tip....gradually start with veggie/fruit smoothies, try kale/spinach, pineapple, strawberry and red apple to start then gradually added more vegetables once a week. Drink 1 veggie/fruit smoothie for dinner and used a multivitamin with minerals, gradually increase to two smoothies after 30 days so your digestive system can get used to it. When I first started my healthy journey, I started with a multivitamin until I was able to added more veggies smoothies and eat a vegetable/fruit base diet. Working at a computer all day, my eyes would tire quickly and mentally at the end of the day I would be in a fog. But taking vitamins and drinking veggie/fruit smoothies helped a lot. I am more alert, energized and at the end of the day there was no fog. I hope this helps! if there is anything else you would like to know, comment below!

bodyThe greatest hindrance to eating healthy was my emotions. When I started this journey I had to become head strong, I had to discipline myself to eat right no matter how I felt. It was not easy, however, my faith played a great role in helping me defeat the struggle of emotions. It helped me learn what I feel, I can control and change how I view it. Such as anxiety, loneliness and depression; I don’t have to receive those thoughts and meditate on them, I can reject them. That was empowering! Secondly, I started attaching positive emotion to healthy foods instead of negative. I would research all vegetables and their health benefits, little by little it changed how I thought and felt about food. I started to feel happy when I ate vegetables I used to hate because of their benefits. In addition to seeing the health risk to the foods I used to crave, I emotionally rejected it. I trained myself mentally and emotionally to eat healthy. Lastly, I dealt with stress through pray, meditation on scriptures and exercise. Don’t think this was easy, it was a process, many times I gave in to my stress, especially at work. When I fell off, I didn’t wallow in it, I just dust myself off and started new. Seeing how clear and beautiful my skin became, improvement in vision and digestive system the more it motivated me to keep going! I hope this helps someone!

"body": "The greatest hindrance to eating healthy was my emotions. That was empowering!\n\nSecondly, I started attaching positive emotion to healthy foods instead of negative. I would research all vegetables and their health benefits, little by little it changed how I thought and felt about food. I started to feel happy when I ate vegetables I used to hate because of their benefits. In addition to seeing the health risk to the foods I used to crave, I emotionally rejected it. I trained myself mentally and emotionally to eat healthy.\n\nLastly, I dealt with stress through pray, meditation on scriptures and exercise. \n\n\nI hope this helps someone!",

bodyAs a nurse it sadden me when I see more and more young people in their twenties on blood pressure medication. Something that can be prevented by healthy diet, exercise and proper stress coping skills. Whether in my family or friends, I see people take these drugs and still eat horrible. I have a family member that has been on high blood pressure medication for 30 years! Thirty years a long time right! I asked one question: what did your doctor tell you to do to get off of this medication? “He just told me to monitor my blood pressure it at home and be careful of the sodium intake and my stress. I could not believe what I was hearing, i had to ask more questions? Did he set you up with a nutritionist to teach you how to eat properly? Did he advise you to exercise and give you specifics on what? Did he explain to you the healing properties of food and how if you eat a nutrient packed diet your body can heal itself? She respond “No.” Did you ask? I said. She states “I just thought I will have high blood pressure because my mother does.” It dawned on me of the ignorance, how many people believe that it’s normal to be on a pill for the rest of their lives, still exist in 2016, with all of the resources of healthy eating, and all of the research studies that show how proper diet enables the body to heal itself. Year after year, younger and younger people are pre-hypertension or have hypertension because of their poor diet filled with sugar, no exercise and obesity. Believing they can eat whatever they want as long as they take their pill! Your body can heal itself! What a concept, that God created your body a living organism not only to survive in drastic situation, but have built in mechanism to heal itself. So what does your body need to heal itself? Proper diet, vegetable based: it can be steam, sautéed or eat raw in salad or bake, but best source of nutrient from vegetable is from blending them. Vegetable and fruit smoothies. The vegetables that are packed with nutrients, are kale, spinach, collard greens, broccoli, brussel sprouts, cauliflower, parsley, cilantro, celery and cucumber. For fruits the best are berries: blackberries, blue berries, raspberry, and strawberries. These are to start off, but you can add more vegetables and fruits to the list. Eat more fish, tuna, salmon two times a week, white meat such as chicken. Limit red meat. Use more spices then salt, and most important tip, "read labels." Decrease process foods, fast foods, candy or other sweet/sport drinks. Make an effort to plan meal and cook at home. Hydrate! Hydrate! drink water and teas, reduce sport drinks/soda with a lot of sugar. Let’s talk exercise 30-45min 4 to 5 days of the week, brisk walk, hiking, indoor cycling or yoga or palates, sports: soccer, basketball or dancing classes. Just remember your body is worth the investment, YOU are worth the investment! The more I see less young adults’ pre-hypertensive or on meds for hypertension the better! Please take care of yourself!

bodySitting at my desk, I hear my co-workers calling me to the kitchen. I opened the door and there it was... a moist yellow cake with luscious whip cream and chocolate frosting. I saw the cake before I heard them scream Happy 30th birthday. Then it dawned on me, I am thirty years old today starting at 8:45pm, it was only 12:00pm so I was still 29 years of age. As everyone were giving me hugs, I smiled, but I couldn’t stop thinking, I will never be called twenty something ever again! Death to my twenties?!? Immediately I went into a temporary depression, I ate three helpings of cake and loaded my plate with chile con queso, chip and salsa, chicken fajitas and guacamole. My body was devastated, by my emotions and taste buds were oh so s-a-t-i-s-f-i-e-d. Unfortunately, I was an emotional eater, whether happy, sad or lonely I would eat every greasy, salty, sweet food I could get my hands on. Then I would feel guilty and put myself on a diet. It was an endless cycle of satisfying craving to guilt link-diets. Sad to say, I would justify my bad habits, with the friends I hung out with, we called ourselves foodie scavengers!! However, that all changed, two weeks after my thirtieth birthday, I started to see floaters in my vision. At first I paid it no mind, I thought maybe I need a new sunglasses. So I brought the most expensive pair I could find. But, the floaters did not go away,it got worse. I set up an appointment for an eye exam, the optometrist stated I had beginning stages of dry eye and gave me a new prescriptions for eye drops. I used the eye drops once, and i temporary relief for two to three hours, then it came back. I woke up the next morning, put eye drops in my eyes and off to work I went. My client came early, so I started discussing with her what was going on my vision, while I was setting up for the day. She stopped me in mid-sentence and said, I used to work for an Optometrist back in Barbados, he taught me the reason people see floaters and develop dry eyes, because they're lacking minerals in their diet. You need to drink fruit/vegetable juice in the morning and coconut water at night. Really? it's that easy, I replied. Yes ma'am! she said. All day at work, I meditated on what she said. As soon as I clocked out of work, I went to the grocery store, purchase fruits, veggies and a juicer machine. I juiced carrot, kale, celery, spinach, apple together in the morning and drank coconut water at night. After five days, I was shock!! The floaters went away, my vision was clearer, colors were so bright and vibrant. It was amazing. Never in my life was my eyes sight so clear. Drinking fruit/veggies, eliminated floater, and enhance my eye sight! Can the body really heal itself by the food we eat? I had issues with constipation, stomach spasm, I used to get sick all the time. So I went on a total food cleanse, and strip my diet to only fruits, vegetables and water, for three days. I made vegetable smoothies, three times a day with 16 oz of water in between. After the first day I was very busy in the bathroom, TMI, sorry! I’m glad I did this over the weekend. The taste was horrible, but I was convinced myself i rather drink this then take medicine. On the third day, I felt so clean inside. I don’t know how to explain it. I had so much energy! I slept well and I woke up refreshed. Slowly in the week I reintroduced foods I used to eat to see how my body responds to it. By doing this I learned I had a sensitivity to certain foods, sugar and dairy. When I rid those food out of my diet, no more stomach spasms, headaches or constipation! I used to get sick with colds and strep throat, every year. Since I started eating more veggies and fruit, lean meat such chicken, tuna and salmon. My digestive tract loves me, I rarely get sick, I will sneeze here and there but then it goes away. In the past, I sneezed once and the next three days here comes a cold. But not anymore! I am now 32 years old, I can count on my hand how many times I've been sick! I am a believer!!
