Other sleep disorders include nightmares, night terrors, sleepwalking and sleep apnea. We have specific remedies to match each of these individual sleep disorders, their unique underlying cause,  ADHD traits and other coexisting conditions. \n\nIndividually prescribed homeopathic remedies can resolve sleeping issues in children and adults by addressing root cause/s such as anxiety, restlessness, restless leg syndrome, breathing disorders (sleep apnea, adenoids), hormonal imbalances etc. We don’t simply use sedative medicines to induce sleep or give anti-depressant medication to alter brain chemistry. The homeopathic approach asks why is there a problem with sleep in the first place?. \n\nGabor Mate, a physician specialising in childhood development and trauma believes the problem with sleep in ADHD children is separation anxiety. And for ADD adults like himself who dread going to bed and turning the light off is due to an underlying fear of being alone with one’s urgent mind. Mate suggests that this is due to ‘implicit memory of finding oneself, in infancy, cut off from contact with the parent’ and how ‘the unconscious fear of reactivating that implicit memory is what leads to the adult’s aversion to lying down to sleep without any diversions’. This is something we can help homeopathically. Pulsatilla is one of our main remedies for separation anxiety.\n\nNot getting enough sleep, or needing to sleep at times that doesn’t quite fit with school or work schedule can have debilitating long-term effects. Chronic over-tiredness can cause physical illness, behaviour and mood changes. In children with ADHD it can increase hyperactivity, impulsivity, meltdowns and aggressiveness. It’s a vicious cycle. \n\nAs Mate points out ‘sleep is essential for the brain to regenerate the sensitive neurological apparatus of alertness and attention’.‘The re-programming that takes place in our dreams has a beneficial effect upon ordinary mental functioning’ too. Without a full 8-10 hours sleep at night it is impossible for our brain and entire system to function as it should.\n\nSome parents who are caught in this chronic cycle of sleep deprivation feel they have no choice but to give medication. But as a solution it is far from ideal. It can only ever be a short-term intervention due to issues around dependency, side-effects and possible interaction with other ADHD medications.\n\nAlthough sleep inducing medications are not approved for use in children it is common for doctors to prescribe the likes of benadryl (antihistamine), ambien (adult sleep medication), desyrel/ trazodone (anti-depressant) and Clonidine (high blood pressure medication) to ADHD children \"off-label\". The list of side-effects associated with each of these drugs is frightening.\n\nSome doctors and naturopaths recommend melatonin as a natural aid but again we don’t know what the long-term consequences of taking this supplement are. For some children it seems to work. For others it can cause bad dreams, frequent waking later in the night or waking early. According to Jennifer Kozek other possible side-effects include increased seizure activity, anxiety, testicular atrophy, increased risk of type 2 diabetes,agitation, constipation and other behavioural changes’. \n\nBased on my own research I personally would avoid taking melatonin unless it’s irregular use to get through a short crisis period. We simply do not know what we are doing when taking hormones and interfering with our delicate, intelligent circadian rhythm and melatonin cycle. Kozek recommends increasing intake of essential cofactors in the production of melatonin - vitamin B3, B6, B9 and the amino acid tryptophan as an alternative to melatonin supplementation.\n\nThe great thing about homeopathy is that it offers a solution that is safe, effective, gentle and free from side-effects. Anxiety is one of the first symptoms I consistently see patients get relief from, often from the very first prescription (see case study below). Such is the effectiveness of constitutional homeopathic treatment because it resolves the underlying cause of anxiety.\n\nAnxiety is one of the main co-existing conditions with ADHD/ ADD. According to CHADD ‘30 percent of children and up to 53 percent of adults with ADHD may also have an anxiety disorder’. The two conditions are so intertwined that it’s common for parents to question whether their child’s behavior is down to their ADHD or their anxiety. Some parents question if their child was misdiagnosed and really what they are struggling with is an anxiety disorder?. \n\nAnxiety shows up in many areas of life for children and adults with ADHD. In children the anxiety is commonly associated with school and social anxiety. Being expected to read out loud in class can be enough to put a child off ever going back to school. For adults there is often anxiety about work performance, time-management, finances and relationships. Sometimes this anxiety can be useful, even productive, but not when it is chronic.\n\nIt’s very distressing for parents to witness their child worrying excessively. Especially if it’s preventing them from a restful night's sleep. Often the desperation to relieve a child’s anxiety can be so great that parents will consider medications with serious side-effects just to see their child free of tension and stress. \n\nA group of pediatricians in Canada have recently voiced their concerns about the overuse of medication in the treatment of  ADHD children. Pediatrician Guy Falardeau says “the danger is that in some cases we’re actually treating ADHD, but in others, we’re simply masking a mental health issue..he warns masking anxiety or other disorders with medication ends up postponing the moment when the issue inevitably explodes...mental illnesses are harder to treat the longer they’ve had to progress, he noted’.\n\nFalardeau rightly points out that we should be looking at 'why children are acting the way they are and how this is related to mental health, emotions and the child’s social environment?'.\n\nSo what are some of the possible root causes of anxiety? It could be gut issues, hormonal imbalances, thyroid dysfunction or trauma. Anxiety in children can even stem from In Utero if a mother suffered with anxiety in pregnancy, or perhaps being separated at birth for an extended period. If gut issues are at the root of anxiety we can use homeopathic remedies to heal a leaky gut. If trauma is at the root we can prescribe a remedy to help a child integrate difficult emotions which have become blocked. Whatever the reason homeopathy can not only address it but resolve it too. Michael, age 12, had been waking an hour into sleep with a loud screeching sound in his ears. Michael described it as screaming in fast forward. It usually lasted 15 minutes. It really upset Michael and made him feel very panicky. He would have to get up out of bed, pace around, and covers his ears. Most nights it took Michael 15 minutes to fall asleep. Some nights Michael was worried about school and getting his work done.  Michael worried if he didn’t do his homework right because he was afraid people would think he is stupid. He was anxious about starting secondary (high) school next year, because he was worried about making friends. He was also worried about the sound that would wake him up. Other nights Michael woke with pains in his stomach. Michael described it as a hunger pain that he only gets when he is anxious. Michael's mother said he worries about everyone especially his brother and mother. Thunderstorms scare him,  he's afraid house will fall down or someone would get hit with lightening. Michael said he is having a more restful sleep.       "body": "Pruritic urticarial papules and plaques of pregnancy (PUPPs), otherwise known as Polymorpic eruption of pregnancy (PEP) is one of the most common conditions associated with pregnancy, and is characterized by urticarial papules and plaques with pruritus on the abdomen, buttocks and thighs. Although it can occur in other areas of the body e.g. in this case where it was worse on the lower legs. In most cases, the skin lesions develop in the third trimester and usually disappear within 7 to 10 days after birth. \n\nIt’s a rash that starts off as tiny, itchy red bumps in the stretch marks on the abdomen. It’s distinguishing characteristic is that it surrounds, but never affects, the navel. These little red bumps get bigger, forming large patches that spread down the legs, and up the chest. Eventually, most of the body can be covered in the itchy, eczema like rash. It was worse around her shins and her bump. She had been diagnosed with PUPPs in her last pregnancy too but this time onset was earlier at 28 weeks. Last pregnancy she developed it around 39 weeks, and continued to suffer with it for several weeks after the birth, which was very difficult on top of recovery from an emergency c-section.\n\nThis time Sandra was doing everything she could to shift the rash. There was no way she could face another 10 weeks of itching, she was ‘cracking up’. She was taking nettle, dandelion, and oat straw daily. Avoiding dairy, gluten and potatoes which seemed to aggravate the rash. And taking probiotics too. Sandra had also tried a homeopathic remedy called sulphur. None of which helped.\n\nSarah felt like her blood was bubbling she was so hot, burning up and sometimes red in the face. She was suffering from painful tightness and knots across her shoulders. Sarah was also anaemic and her energy levels were low, and she sometimes felt breathless.\n\nThe first remedy I prescribed was Apis mel 30c based on the appearance (rosy, red erysipelas, rough eruptions on skin) of the rash, sensation (itchy, burning), and modalities (<heat and warmth of clothes, room, bedding), excessive amniotic fluid (Polyhydraminos), and heartburn in pregnancy.\n\nSarah described how she was feeling more emotional and tearful in her pregnancy, more sensitive to sad things, irritable at times, mood up & down. When I asked Sarah how she was expressing her irritability? She responded that she was ‘bottling things up’. Sarah said she usually only cries in private, and tries not to cry in front of her son. Sarah had feelings of sadness about her last birth which didn’t go as she wished. This emotional picture confirmed my next prescription - Natrum Muriaticum (Nat mur).\n\nI recommended Sarah to take Nat mur 6c three times daily until improvement. A week later Sarah reported ‘rash has gone way down, still a bit itchy but much better, having a couple of really itchy flare ups every now and then especially during the night...definitely feels like it’s working its way out, I’m delighted!’.\n\nI recommended to continue taking Nat mur 6c.  A week later Sarah sent a message saying rash has improved really well, although still a little bit itchy on my belly at night, but it is way better all round for sure!’. The following week I received a message from Sarah - ‘I’m delighted...I feel way less stressed....it’s great’.\n\nAt Sarah’s first follow-up 6 weeks later she was feeling good, the stress she was feeling for a few weeks had subsided. The rash was completely gone, but she still got a little itchy on her abdomen if she became hot and sweaty. Sarah couldn’t ‘believe how much it cleared’, and said ‘I’m feeling way less stressed, i was feeling miserable, i’m now back to myself, rash was one big stress. On Nat mur the stress lifted, my shoulders were killing me as well, so tense, but feel a lot better now, it was a big shift.’\n\n10 days later I received a message from Sarah saying the itch was coming back - ‘I'm very tired, and feeling a bit stressed so that probably brought it on’.
