| body | <html> <h1><strong>History of the Bitcoin</strong></h1> <p><strong>https://tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com/2014/02/bitcoin-perfecthue.jpg?fit=1%2C1</strong></p> <p><strong>- 1977: First description of the RSA encryption which uses a public key to encrypt and a private key to decrypt confidential data.</strong></p> <p><br></p> <p><strong>- 1979: Ralph Merkle invents the mechanism of compression by the Merkle tree, or Merkle Tree compression mechanism . It is used to store and verify a large volume of data efficiently and securely and used by the Bitcoin protocol to calculate the Merkle root of all transactions contained in a data block.</strong></p> <p><br></p> <p><strong>- 1990: American mathematician David Chaum invents DigiCash an electronic currency (centralized and proprietary) based on cryptographic protocols.</strong></p> <p><br></p> <p><strong>- 1991 : Stuart Haber and W. Scott Stornetta, in an article entitled How to Time-stamp a Digital Document quoted by Satoshi Nakamoto in his white paper , set out the principles of what would later be called a chain of blocks.</strong></p> <p><br></p> <p><strong>- 1992 : Scott Vanstone (Certicom) proposes the Elliptic curve digital signature algorithm (ECDSA) algorithm that uses shorter keys and allows faster signature and encryption than RSA.</strong></p> <p><br></p> <p><strong>- 1994 : Nick Szabo advances the idea of smart contract , computer transaction protocol that executes the terms of a contract.</strong></p> <p><br></p> <p><strong>- June 18, 1996 : the NSA publishes a report entitled " How to produce money: the cryptography of anonymous electronic cash ".</strong></p> <p><br></p> <p><strong>- 1997 : Adam Back , who later became Satoshi Nakamoto's first interlocutor , invented Hashcash , a system of proof of work. The idea had already been explored by Cynthia Dwork and Moni Naor in a report called Pricing via Processing or Combatting Junk Mail published in 1993, but Adam Back had not been aware of this work.</strong></p> <p><br></p> <p><strong>- 1998 : Bankruptcy of DigiCash . Wei Dai launches the idea of a digital cash based on a registry distributed on the cypherpunks mailing list .</strong></p> <p><br></p> <p><strong>- May 1999 : Henri Massias, Xavier Serret-Avila, and Jean-Jacques Quisquater describe a secure timestamp service without trusted third parties . This document will be mentioned later in the Bitcoin White Paper .</strong></p> <p><br></p> <p><strong>- June 1999 : Shawn Fanning, with Napster , invented peer-to-peer (P2P) technology. The Napster audio file sharing platform, however, operated with a central server (called farm), which played the role of a centralized registry of all files belonging to or requested by peers. This centralized system was the single point of vulnerability (Single Point of Failure-SPOF) of Napster and the site was closed down by the FBI in 2001 for violation of intellectual property rights.</strong></p> <p><br></p> <p><strong>- 2000 : Tom Pepper and Justin Frankel develop Gnutella , the first fully distributed P2P file transfer platform.</strong></p> <p><br></p> <p><strong>- 2001 : Publication of Masashi's The Security Assessment of Time Stamping Schemes One who talks about "chain of time stamp" and conceptualizes something even more similar to the blockchain (without mining).</strong></p> <p><br></p> <p><strong>- From 1998 to 2005 : Nick Szabo develops the BitGold project , a decentralized digital currency based on falsifiable chains of proofs of work and using many elements that will be found in Bitcoin: timestamping, digital signatures, public keys. Reveals however too vulnerable to attacks.</strong></p> <p><br></p> <p><strong>- 2004 : Development of Ripplepay , an attempt at a decentralized monetary system.</strong></p> <p><br></p> <p><strong>2008</strong></p> <p><strong>- August 19, 2008 : Satoshi Nakamoto (pseudonym) reserves the domain name bitcoin.org .</strong></p> <p><br></p> <p><strong>- October 31, 2008 : Announcement of the birth of Bitcoin . The first specification and proof of concept of Bitcoin is published in the Cryptography mailing list by Satoshi Nakamoto .</strong></p> <p><br></p> <p><strong>- November 9, 2008 : In a message addressed to Satoshi Nakamoto , Hal Finney speaks for the first time of " Block chain". Nakamoto talked until then of "timestamp server" .</strong></p> <p><br></p> <p><strong>2009</strong></p> <p><strong>- 3 January : creation of the first block .</strong></p> <p><br></p> <p><strong>- January 11 : Bitcoin 0.1.10 alpha version is available for download at sourceforge .</strong></p> <p><br></p> <p><strong>- January 12 : First transaction in bitcoins between Satoshi Nakamoto and Hal Finney . It is entered in block 170 and its amount is 10 BTC.</strong></p> <p><br></p> <p><strong>- February 17 : Announcement of the creation of Bitcoin on the site P2Pfoundation and publication of a first version of the software.</strong></p> <p><br></p> <p><strong>- August : only 1564 blocks are extracted during the month against an average of 4464 expected. Hypothesis: Satoshi Nakamoto is on vacation and he disconnected his miners.</strong></p> <p><br></p> <p><strong>- October 5: Publication of the first bitcoin / dollar exchange rate. A flaw in the protocol allowed the generation of 92 billion bitcoins. The bug is quickly corrected, and we return to a previous state of Blockchain to cancel this fraudulent creation.</strong></p> <p><br></p> <p><strong>- August 17: The bitcoin is worth 0,06 €.</strong></p> <p><br></p> <p><strong>- September 7, 2010: Satoshi Nakamoto modifies the Bitcoin Core consensus rules to limit the block size from blocks 79,400.</strong></p> <p><br></p> <p><strong>- September 12: Block 79,400 is undermined. | body | About 100 million years ago, in the present Patagonia, young titanosaurs lived in a floodplain that later became a desert in Patagonia. Their fossilized remains have just revealed a new species that could very well be the largest among all dinosaurs. Its name: Patagotitan mayorum . In terms of dinosaurs , Argentina and Patagonia regularly occupy the center stage for more than a decade. It is with reason that some of the earliest specimens have been found, such as Herrerasaurus , and among the largest, such as Argentinosaurus . The latter is part of the Titanosauria (titanosauria), a group of herbivorous sauropod dinosaurs dominating in the late Cretaceous period and whose representatives are found throughout the world, including France. In 2012, an employee of the La Flecha ranch in Patagonia, owned by the Mayo family, reported the presence of fossilized bones. When the importance of the site was realized, the paleontologists began to flock to come to search. No fewer than six animals have been identified in the more than 150 fossils unearthed by fifteen researchers, geologists and students, free hosted by the Mayo. These were clearly the remains of probably young individuals of a new species of dinosaur of very large size but whose nature was still unclear. <iframe width="868" height="507" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/nTIJc4j5F9c" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> The largest titanosaurus? Not sure From 2013, however, it became clear that it was a titanosaurian and perhaps the largest dinosaur discovered to date, so this discovery was quickly publicized and that the documentary BBC it Had been consecrated. It was still too early, however, to give him a name and to say with certainty that a new size record had been established. Paleontologists patiently worked for four years comparing the data collected from the study of the bones to those of the other major known sauropods of the Cretaceous and they have now published their findings in an article in the Proceedings of the Royal Society of London . http://fr.cdn.v5.futura-sciences.com/buildsv6/images/mediumoriginal/3/3/1/3310a39c68_111045_dinosaure-patagotitan-mayorum-museo-paleontologico-egidio-feruglio-mef.jpg Photo taken at the time of the excavations, in 2013, showing the femur of 2.40 m long. It is indeed a " Patagonia Titan " ( Patagotitan ) and it "belongs" to the Mayo family, hence the term mayorum , in his honor and to thank him for his help for the excavations, . The laws of biomechanics make it possible to estimate the weight of a vertebrate according to the characteristics of its bones, which must bear its weight. Those of the largest of these fossils were scanned by laser , which made it possible to reconstitute the skeleton of Patagotitan mayorum on computer and then to add flesh. The paleontologists conclude that it could weigh about 70 tons, the weight of about 10 African elephants. He could measure about 37 meters long and 8 meters at the withers. A molding of its skeleton has already been exhibited at the American Museum of Natural History in 2016. |

| body | CRISPR, a new brand of cereals? No, this little crunchy word refers to a bacterial immune defense system that has been revolutionizing genetics for a number of years by providing a simple and accurate tool for editing the genome of any cell. To what extent? However, this is the issue recently raised by Haiwei Mou and Jordan Smith of the University of Massachusetts in Worcester, USA and their colleagues, showing that this technique has some rather problematic adverse effects: jumps Involuntary when the cell starts to read and translate its genome. http://www.pourlascience.fr/e_img/boutique/actumnc1707_crispr.jpg [source](http://www.pourlascience.fr/e_img/boutique/actumnc1707_crispr.jpg) In bacteria, CRISPR is a region of the genome that constitutes a sort of library of DNA fragments from the viruses encountered. In the event of a new viral infection, the bacteria compare virus DNA (bacterial viruses, bacteriophages, introduce their DNA into bacteria and use their molecular arsenal to replicate) to the fragments of their library. If a sequence is recognized, an enzyme, named Cas9, cuts the viral DNA in this sequence, which destroys it and thus avoids the invasion of the bacterial genome. Today, many biologists are diverting this mechanism to cut the DNA cells in a targeted location. The technique, called CRISPR-Cas9, consists in associating with the enzyme Cas9 a guide - a small RNA recognizing the region of the genome to be modified and built on the same model as that guiding Cas9 in bacteria. The enzyme Cas9 then cuts the DNA at the target site, which triggers its repair, either by gluing the two separated ends or by recombination with a synthetic homologous DNA fragment introduced into the cell. Biologists know that the guide can recognize other sequences resembling its target and, as a result, develop techniques to limit this type of error. But Haiwei Mou, Jordan Smith and their colleagues have highlighted another difficulty. Usually, when a eukaryotic gene is transcribed into messenger RNA (the intermediate that will be translated into protein), some fragments of its sequence, called introns, are eliminated, while others, the exons, are conserved. This "splicing" is fundamental, because the protein produced depends on the conserved fragments. Alternative splicing is thus used by eucarytes to diversify the production of proteins or to regulate the expression of genes by small RNAs. Also with about 20,000 genes, The human genome can produce several tens of thousands of proteins in addition. Haiwei Mou and his colleagues have shown that the CRISPR-Cas9 technique produces unwanted and not always easy to detect splices, leading to aberrant proteins. They used the CRISPR-Cas9 technique to produce, from a mouse cancer cell line, two lines where one gene was modified: in one, a nucleotide was eliminated in an exon of the gene; In the other, two nucleotides of the exon. In cells, genes are read by triplets of nucleotides: each triplet encodes an amino acid, and all the amino acids thus produced from a gene form a protein. Thus, by deleting only one or two nucleotides, the reading of the modified gene is shifted so that, in most cases, the mutation cancels its expression. It was the desired effect here. However, in many of the cells of both lines, instead of nullifying gene expression, these mutations resulted in the suppression of only the modified exon - and the production of a truncated protein. Better, by mutating an exon encoding another protein, β-catenin, they showed that not only was this exon frequently suppressed, but the protein produced was still functional ... and at the wrong place in the cell. In addition, exons neighboring the mutated were also affected. In other words, a gene mutated so that it is no longer expressed can produce an active protein with perturbed functions. How? That is the whole question. These small mutations could accidentally introduce elements that label the exon as having to be omitted or, on the contrary, disrupt the signage which favors its splicing ... In the meantime, the search for involuntary exon omissions will have to be part of the Necessary controls when using CRISPR. |

"body": "CRISPR, a new brand of cereals? No, this little crunchy word refers to a bacterial immune defense system that has been revolutionizing genetics for a number of years by providing a simple and accurate tool for editing the genome of any cell. To what extent? However, this is the issue recently raised by Haiwei Mou and Jordan Smith of the University of Massachusetts in Worcester, USA and their colleagues, showing that this technique has some rather problematic adverse effects: jumps Involuntary when the cell starts to read and translate its genome.\nhttp://www.pourlascience.fr/e_img/boutique/actumnc1707_crispr.jpg\n[source](http://www.pourlascience.fr/e_img/boutique/actumnc1707_crispr.jpg)\n\nIn bacteria, CRISPR is a region of the genome that constitutes a sort of library of DNA fragments from the viruses encountered. In the event of a new viral infection, the bacteria compare virus DNA (bacterial viruses, bacteriophages, introduce their DNA into bacteria and use their molecular arsenal to replicate) to the fragments of their library. If a sequence is recognized, an enzyme, named Cas9, cuts the viral DNA in this sequence, which destroys it and thus avoids the invasion of the bacterial genome.\n\nToday, many biologists are diverting this mechanism to cut the DNA cells in a targeted location. The technique, called CRISPR-Cas9, consists in associating with the enzyme Cas9 a guide - a small RNA recognizing the region of the genome to be modified and built on the same model as that guiding Cas9 in bacteria. The enzyme Cas9 then cuts the DNA at the target site, which triggers its repair, either by gluing the two separated ends or by recombination with a synthetic homologous DNA fragment introduced into the cell.\n\nBiologists know that the guide can recognize other sequences resembling its target and, as a result, develop techniques to limit this type of error. This \"splicing\" is fundamental, because the protein produced depends on the conserved fragments. Alternative splicing is thus used by eucarytes to diversify the production of proteins or to regulate the expression of genes by small RNAs. | body | A cloudy complex identified on twilight observations with the Keck telescope in Hawaii, is nearly 9,000 kilometers in diameter, nearly 30% of the surface of Neptune, the last giant in the solar system. Besides the size of this gigantic storm, it is its location that interrogates astronomers. Its outer edge is in fact very close to the equator whereas usually these atmospheric phenomena are rather observed near the poles, like this vortex identified in 2016 by the Hubble telescope, which was as big as the surface of the United States. The storm on Neptune has considerably increased in size in months of a month. https://www.sciencesetavenir.fr/assets/img/2017/08/07/cover-r4x3w1000-5988788652cc4-147231.jpg The Neptune specialists do not yet explain the presence of these clouds in this place, they assume the presence of a vortex in the low atmosphere or the existence of a seasonal phenomenon renewing itself every few decades. On Neptune, this type of meteorological artefact evolves in fact in a few years, contrary to what happens on Jupiter and its Great red spot, which is the place of a storm that lasts for several centuries. Neptune is the windiest planet in our solar system, with the fastest winds blowing towards the equator at nearly 1000 km / h. Understanding the atmospheric phenomena that prevail on Neptune is very important for astrophysicists studying exoplanets. Many of those that have been discovered are of the size of Neptune and some results obtained can help them to study these distant worlds. |

| body | The United States could become the first country to regulate cigarettes ... which aren't addictive. http://www.sciencepresse.qc.ca/sites/default/files/styles/popup/public/2017-08/Capsule%20Pascal%20A%20quand%20des%20cigarettes%20sans%20d%C3%A9pendance.jpg?itok=3gWx-JCL [©](http://www.sciencepresse.qc.ca/sites/default/files/styles/popup/public/2017-08/Capsule%20Pascal%20A%20quand%20des%20cigarettes%20sans%20d%C3%A9pendance.jpg?itok=3gWx-JCL) In a [statement released](https://www.fda.gov/NewsEvents/Newsroom/PressAnnouncements/ucm568923.htm) on July 28, the Federal Food and Drug Administration announced a plan to reduce the level of nicotine in cigarettes to a point where the product would cease to create dependency. In particular, this plan would target young people: reducing the likelihood that they would develop cigarette addiction early in their lives would reduce the risk of developing tobacco-related diseases later. In addition, there is already a[ scientific literature](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3632983/) supporting a link between addiction and nicotine. The problem, says the New Scientist, is[ however economic](https://www.newscientist.com/article/2142378-us-plan-to-cut-smoking-with-non-addictive-cigarettes-has-flaws/): any country that will impose the sale of cigarettes with low nicotine will expose itself to the risk of seeing a black market of cigarettes deemed "normal" by smokers. The plan also targets electronic cigarettes that the FDA would like to classify as "cessation products". Welcomed by the anti-smoking groups, the announcement could be met with prosecution by the tobacco companies. |

"body": "The United States could become the first country to regulate cigarettes ... which aren't addictive.\n\nhttp://www.sciencepresse.qc.ca/sites/default/files/styles/popup/public/2017-08/Capsule%20Pascal%20A%20quand%20des%20cigarettes%20sans%20d%C3%A9pendance.jpg?itok=3gWx-JCL\n[©](http://www.sciencepresse.qc.ca/sites/default/files/styles/popup/public/2017-08/Capsule%20Pascal%20A%20quand%20des%20cigarettes%20sans%20d%C3%A9pendance.jpg?itok=3gWx-JCL)\n\nIn a [statement released](https://www.fda.gov/NewsEvents/Newsroom/PressAnnouncements/ucm568923.htm) on July 28, the Federal Food and Drug Administration announced a plan to reduce the level of nicotine in cigarettes to a point where the product would cease to create dependency. In particular, this plan would target young people: reducing the likelihood that they would develop cigarette addiction early in their lives would reduce the risk of developing tobacco-related diseases later. In addition, there is already a[ scientific literature](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3632983/) supporting a link between addiction and nicotine.\n\nThe problem, says the New Scientist, is[ however economic](https://www.newscientist.com/article/2142378-us-plan-to-cut-smoking-with-non-addictive-cigarettes-has-flaws/): any country that will impose the sale of cigarettes with low nicotine will expose itself to the risk of seeing a black market of cigarettes deemed \"normal\" by smokers. The plan also targets electronic cigarettes that the FDA would like to classify as \"cessation products\". Welcomed by the anti-smoking groups, the announcement could be met with prosecution by the tobacco companies.",

| body | On the layman's level this is a question of quality versus quantity. I would go for quality because science - and all knowledge for that matter - itself needs to get rod of "noise" and enhance the "signal" - which is what knowledge especially science is all about. I would like to see strict standards and requirement of reproduciblity as well as objective verification in every scientific research before validating it as a fact. |
