| body | Hello winwinwin10, I liked you article. It's interesting for a writer like me. I write all kind of stuff, but horror (specially screenplays) is one of my guilty pleasures. Now, about your article. No wonder that it hasn't received any up-votes. It's formatted like a wall of text and very hard to read. I copy/pasted your article in a text processor to see the invisible signs of your formatting. It's wrong. You should add a hard break after the last period of a paragraph, and a soft break for each blank line. You create a hard break by hitting enter and a soft one by hitting shift+enter. Work on your formatting and continue writing, this kind of think pieces have a great potential. Especially when it's a niche subject like this. |

| body | When Jesús Rivas removed a female anaconda from a snake orgy in order to examine her, he got a surprise. The anaconda's swollen body suggested she was full of food, so Rivas waited for her to throw up: snakes often vomit after a meal if they have over-eaten or are stressed, to make themselves lighter so they can flee. But instead of a typical prey, like a capybara, a reptilian tail started emerging from her mouth. "It was an anaconda," says Rivas, a herpetologist from New Mexico Highlands University in Las Vegas. "And the hemepenis was there, so it was a male." The female anaconda had eaten one of her most recent sexual partners, a phenomenon known as sexual cannibalism. Her startling action is part of a growing body of evidence that we have misunderstood how snakes have sex. In anacondas, sexual cannibalism only goes one way: the female consumes the male. Previously, scientists had assumed that female snakes are submissive during courtship and mating, but it is now clear that they have a prominent role. "There was the interpretation that females had no say in the mating process," says Rivas. He thinks that assumption stems from bias by early researchers, who were predominantly male. In fact female snakes are physically imposing, so it is not surprising that they can overpower – and even swallow – their mates. In many animals, males are larger than females, but for most snakes the opposite is true. In anacondas, females are on average 4.7 times larger than males. That is the biggest size difference between sexes in any land-living vertebrate. "I was surprised," says Rivas. "The difference is drastic." The reason males are so often larger than females is that it helps them secure a mate. Among lizards, birds and mammals, bigger males are more successful at defending a territory and driving off any competing males. But most male snakes do not exhibit such stereotypically male behaviour. They are not territorial, and during courtship they may simply push away their competition, instead manoeuvring their tails to sneakily reach for a female's genital tract. This could explain why male snakes do not benefit from being larger. Instead, evolution may have driven female snakes to grow larger. Size is linked to increased fertility and bigger offspring, which are more likely to survive. A 2016 study also found that maternal body size can influence the young's immune systems. Males seem to be drawn to these reproductive benefits: they prefer to court larger females. But it is not obvious how the males make this choice. Snakes do not have very good eyesight, so how a male snake could spot a particularly big female from a distance is unclear. A possible clue comes from the fact that courtship is initiated by females, not males. After a female emerges from hibernation and sheds her skin, she releases pheromones that draw males towards her. "It's thought that the pheromones are transmitted when the skin tears," says Rivas. "Males go crazy." It turns out that these pheromones can carry information about a female's appearance. Michael LeMaster from Western Oregon University in Monmouth found that the scent emitted by female red-sided garter snakes can convey their physical size. During the breeding season, longer females had higher proportions of certain chemicals in their skin. "We were pleasantly surprised to find that there was size-dependent variation in the female sexual attractiveness pheromone," says LeMaster. Although males do court small females, they spend less time doing so, and often switch their attention to larger females if one passes by. However, the pheromones cannot be the whole explanation because, with very few exceptions, they do not diffuse through the air, so suitors need to get close before they detect them. Another aspect of snake sex that we have got wrong is the pattern of mating. Polygyny, in which one male mates with several females, was long thought to be the norm in snakes. But it is not quite as simple as that. It is certainly common for several male snakes to be attracted to the same female. For example, in a 2016 study Mark O'Shea from the University of Wolverhampton in the UK and his colleagues reported an instance of multi-male courtship in the paradise flying snake. In the Malaysian region of Borneo, a female paradise flying snake was photographed in a braid-like entanglement with four males. The snakes moved as a unit following the female's lead, moving along a path and into bushes, over the course of 30 minutes. The team suspects that the males competed for the prime copulation position during the journey. Keel-bellied whipsnakes, a closely-related species, have also been observed in a similar courtship braid. These snakes are active during the day, so the formation may help them do two things at once: woo a female and keep slithering through the trees to avoid predators. On the ground, snake "orgies" tend to be much larger. A female green anaconda will sit still in mud or shallow water, while males make the effort of moving around to find her. Often, a dozen prospective partners present themselves, wrapping themselves around the female in a ritual that can last for up to a month. Rivas vividly recalls watching a male green anaconda persistently pursue a large female and later have sex with her, disregarding other mating opportunities nearby. "It's the closest to true love you'll find in a snake," he says. Garter snake courtship can be even more extreme. In the Interlake region of Manitoba, Canada, a single female may be pursued by up to 100 males, who slither on top of each other and form a "mating ball". Several mating groups often gather at once in crevices above ground, littering the landscape with thousands of snakes. However, the garter snakes only do this in certain places. "In the continental US, there are no mating aggregations," says Rivas. It is not clear why, but environmental conditions such as climate could be a factor: the behaviour of other snake species can vary dramatically based on geography. Rivas and his team are currently studying the mating practices of their local garter snake population in New Mexico. The trouble with all these snake orgies is that it is not clear which of the males, if any, actually succeeds in producing offspring. But one thing is clear: since snake orgies are writhing with males, females must choose. Female anacondas do not always consume their mates, and it is not clear how they choose whether to do so. "It would be interesting to find out why the ones that get eaten are more susceptible," says Rivas. Sexual cannibalism probably provides female anacondas with a lot of nutrients, which would be useful because they fast for seven months while pregnant. When it comes to the reproductive behaviour of snakes though, there are still many mysteries to be solved. Part of the issue is that snakes are so secretive, which means only a few species have been observed in the wild. But from what we can tell, the mating habits of snakes are rather similar to those of spiders. In both groups, the females are larger than the males, there is a lot of complex competition among males to fertilise the females, while the females find ways to control who mates with them – and unwary males sometimes risk being eaten by their mates. Why two such distantly related groups, which last shared a common ancestor hundreds of millions of years ago when animal life was still confined to the sea, have evolved such similar mating styles is anyone's guess. |

"body": "\nWhen Jesús Rivas removed a female anaconda from a snake orgy in order to examine her, he got a surprise.\nThe anaconda's swollen body suggested she was full of food, so Rivas waited for her to throw up: snakes often vomit after a meal if they have over-eaten or are stressed, to make themselves lighter so they can flee. But instead of a typical prey, like a capybara, a reptilian tail started emerging from her mouth.\n\"It was an anaconda,\" says Rivas, a herpetologist from New Mexico Highlands University in Las Vegas. \"And the hemepenis was there, so it was a male.\"\nThe female anaconda had eaten one of her most recent sexual partners, a phenomenon known as sexual cannibalism. Her startling action is part of a growing body of evidence that we have misunderstood how snakes have sex.\n\nIn anacondas, sexual cannibalism only goes one way: the female consumes the male.\nPreviously, scientists had assumed that female snakes are submissive during courtship and mating, but it is now clear that they have a prominent role. \"There was the interpretation that females had no say in the mating process,\" says Rivas. He thinks that assumption stems from bias by early researchers, who were predominantly male.\nIn fact female snakes are physically imposing, so it is not surprising that they can overpower – and even swallow – their mates. In many animals, males are larger than females, but for most snakes the opposite is true.\nIn anacondas, females are on average 4.7 times larger than males. That is the biggest size difference between sexes in any land-living vertebrate. \"I was surprised,\" says Rivas. \"The difference is drastic.\"\nThe reason males are so often larger than females is that it helps them secure a mate.\n\nAmong lizards, birds and mammals, bigger males are more successful at defending a territory and driving off any competing males. But most male snakes do not exhibit such stereotypically male behaviour. They are not territorial, and during courtship they may simply push away their competition, instead manoeuvring their tails to sneakily reach for a female's genital tract. This could explain why male snakes do not benefit from being larger.\nInstead, evolution may have driven female snakes to grow larger. Size is linked to increased fertility and bigger offspring, which are more likely to survive. A 2016 study also found that maternal body size can influence the young's immune systems.\nMales seem to be drawn to these reproductive benefits: they prefer to court larger females.\nBut it is not obvious how the males make this choice. Snakes do not have very good eyesight, so how a male snake could spot a particularly big female from a distance is unclear.\n\nA possible clue comes from the fact that courtship is initiated by females, not males. After a female emerges from hibernation and sheds her skin, she releases pheromones that draw males towards her.\n\"It's thought that the pheromones are transmitted when the skin tears,\" says Rivas. \"Males go crazy.\"\nIt turns out that these pheromones can carry information about a female's appearance.\nMichael LeMaster from Western Oregon University in Monmouth found that the scent emitted by female red-sided garter snakes can convey their physical size. During the breeding season, longer females had higher proportions of certain chemicals in their skin.\n\"We were pleasantly surprised to find that there was size-dependent variation in the female sexual attractiveness pheromone,\" says LeMaster. Although males do court small females, they spend less time doing so, and often switch their attention to larger females if one passes by.\nHowever, the pheromones cannot be the whole explanation because, with very few exceptions, they do not diffuse through the air, so suitors need to get close before they detect them.\nAnother aspect of snake sex that we have got wrong is the pattern of mating.\n\nPolygyny, in which one male mates with several females, was long thought to be the norm in snakes. But it is not quite as simple as that.\nIt is certainly common for several male snakes to be attracted to the same female. For example, in a 2016 study Mark O'Shea from the University of Wolverhampton in the UK and his colleagues reported an instance of multi-male courtship in the paradise flying snake.\nIn the Malaysian region of Borneo, a female paradise flying snake was photographed in a braid-like entanglement with four males. The snakes moved as a unit following the female's lead, moving along a path and into bushes, over the course of 30 minutes. The team suspects that the males competed for the prime copulation position during the journey.\nKeel-bellied whipsnakes, a closely-related species, have also been observed in a similar courtship braid. These snakes are active during the day, so the formation may help them do two things at once: woo a female and keep slithering through the trees to avoid predators.\nOn the ground, snake \"orgies\" tend to be much larger.\n\nA female green anaconda will sit still in mud or shallow water, while males make the effort of moving around to find her. Often, a dozen prospective partners present themselves, wrapping themselves around the female in a ritual that can last for up to a month.\nRivas vividly recalls watching a male green anaconda persistently pursue a large female and later have sex with her, disregarding other mating opportunities nearby. \"It's the closest to true love you'll find in a snake,\" he says.\nGarter snake courtship can be even more extreme. In the Interlake region of Manitoba, Canada, a single female may be pursued by up to 100 males, who slither on top of each other and form a \"mating ball\". Several mating groups often gather at once in crevices above ground, littering the landscape with thousands of snakes.\nHowever, the garter snakes only do this in certain places. \"In the continental US, there are no mating aggregations,\" says Rivas. It is not clear why, but environmental conditions such as climate could be a factor: the behaviour of other snake species can vary dramatically based on geography. Rivas and his team are currently studying the mating practices of their local garter snake population in New Mexico.\nThe trouble with all these snake orgies is that it is not clear which of the males, if any, actually succeeds in producing offspring. But one thing is clear: since snake orgies are writhing with males, females must choose.\n\nFemale anacondas do not always consume their mates, and it is not clear how they choose whether to do so. \"It would be interesting to find out why the ones that get eaten are more susceptible,\" says Rivas. Sexual cannibalism probably provides female anacondas with a lot of nutrients, which would be useful because they fast for seven months while pregnant.\nWhen it comes to the reproductive behaviour of snakes though, there are still many mysteries to be solved. Part of the issue is that snakes are so secretive, which means only a few species have been observed in the wild.\nBut from what we can tell, the mating habits of snakes are rather similar to those of spiders. In both groups, the females are larger than the males, there is a lot of complex competition among males to fertilise the females, while the females find ways to control who mates with them – and unwary males sometimes risk being eaten by their mates.\nWhy two such distantly related groups, which last shared a common ancestor hundreds of millions of years ago when animal life was still confined to the sea, have evolved such similar mating styles is anyone's guess.",

| body | Tennessee Senator Bob Corker has unleashed a blistering attack on US President Donald Trump, after the two Republicans traded insults on Twitter. Mr Corker accused the president of lying in a series of television interviews, adding that he debased the US and weakened its global standing. Mr Trump fired back on Twitter, calling the top Senator a "lightweight" who "couldn't get re-elected". The two men are due to meet at a Senate luncheon later on Tuesday. Mr Trump's visit to Capitol Hill comes as the White House attempts to forge a consensus on the Republican tax reform plan. "He is purposely breaking down relationships we have around the world that had been useful to our nation," Mr Corker said on CNN after Mr Trump published three critical tweets. "Bob Corker, who helped President O give us the bad Iran Deal & couldn't get elected dog catcher in Tennessee, is now fighting Tax Cuts..." Mr Trump tweeted. "I think the debasement of our nation is what he'll be remembered most for," the influential senator added. |

| body | A chance meeting between two childhood friends helped one begin a journey back from drug addiction after many years living on the street. It was early October and Wanja Mwaura, 32, was on her way to the market in Lower Kabaete, not far from Nairobi, when she heard someone shout out her name. She looked up and was surprised to see a tall man with bulging eyes, an emaciated frame, dirtied black overalls and an equally stained thick woollen hat, sitting on the side of the road. She did not recognise him. But when Patrick "Hinga" Wanjiru, 34, introduced himself, Wanja says she found herself in shock. Standing before her was a friend she had known since she was seven years old. "Patrick, or Hinga as we called him, and I had met at primary school in 1992," says Wanja, who is a nurse from Kiambu County, just outside the Kenyan capital. "Hinga used to be a great soccer player all throughout school. We nicknamed him 'Pele'." Hinga was estranged from his parents and lived with his grandmother in a squat. When she couldn't afford to pay his school fees, he was forced to skip classes. Eventually they were evicted even from the squat. But against all the odds, Hinga did well in his exams, until his grandmother died - then he dropped out of school and his life began to take a downward trajectory. Hinga started abusing drugs, first marijuana and then heroin. He spent hours sifting through garbage to find things he could sell on the streets. Hinga and Wanja lost touch. When they met again, more than 15 years later, Hinga had been homeless for more than a decade. He looked nothing like the childhood friend who had once been known as "Pele". Sensing Wanja's dismay, Hinga reassured her that he had only wanted to say hello. She asked him if she could buy him lunch. At a local cafe, she ordered the dish she remembered had been his favourite years earlier - pork ribs and mashed potatoes. She said he appeared distracted, unable to finish sentences. "I gave him my mobile telephone number and told him to call me if he needed anything," Wanja says. Over the next couple of days, Hinga borrowed phones and would regularly call his childhood friend, often just to hear her voice for a chat. He told her that he was committed to getting clean from drugs. "I decided then, that something needed to be done to help him," Wanja says. Taking to social media, Wanja appealed to her friends to see if she could raise funds for drug rehabilitation. "Rehab here is very expensive and I had no ways of raising funds on my own," she says. "We set up a crowdfunding page, but we only managed to raise around 41,000 Kenyan shillings (£300) initially. However the cost of nine days rehabilitation at Chiromo Lane Medical Center in Nairobi was more than 100,000 KES. "I wasn't sure how we would be able to cover this." But Wanja had promised to help Hinga, so she took him to the centre anyway, unsure how they would cover the cost. A spokesperson for the rehab programme says Hinga was a dedicated patient, who committed fully to the nine-day detox. Within days Hinga had gained weight and his concentration improved. Wanja took to Facebook to speak about her pride at her friend's transformation in such a short period of time. "A week ago Hinga and I couldn't hold a normal conversation without me trying to hold his head up with my hand in order for him to concentrate. Today we can have a normal conversation with him confidently looking at me," she wrote. Mombasa businessman Fauz Khalid spotted Wanja's public post on Facebook and said he wanted to share the story on a wider platform. He posted the photos on Twitter and his post has now been shared more than 50,000 times. Skip Twitter post by @FauzKhalid After that, the Kenyan media began to cover the story and Chiromo Lane Medical Center agreed to waive the entire fee for Hinga's treatment. Wanja says this was "a blessing", but she was keen for her friend to undergo a more sustained recovery, and is now raising funds for him to follow a 90-day programme at The Retreat Rehabilitation Centre, where he is currently staying. Heroin in Kenya It is estimated that between 20,000 and 55,000 Kenyans inject heroin but Kenya does not have a government-funded rehabilitation facility According to the International Drugs Policy Consortium, heroin was used in first in cities which were transit points (such as Mombasa) before spreading to Nairobi and other parts of the country The National Campaign Against Drug Abuse, a Kenyan government research body, says it is monitoring 25,000 intravenous drug users around the country - the number of people who snort heroin could be even higher, according to the Anti-Narcotics Unit officials Most of the world's heroin is produced in Afghanistan, and reaches markets in Europe and North America via Central Asia and the Balkans - but the quantity of heroin seized off the coast of Kenya and neighbouring Tanzania has increased exponentially in the last eight years, leading the UN to conclude that the "Southern Route," is growing in importance "Unfortunately, there is still great stigma around drug abuse in Kenya," Wanja says. This may be one reason why the government doesn't provide free drug rehab treatment. "Rehabs are expensive and out of reach for many people, not only in Kenya but also the greater part of Africa. I am committed to crowdsourcing so I can support my friend at this time," says Wanja. "Wanja is an angel sent from God. I owe her my life. She has stuck with me more closely than a brother or a sister," Hinga tells the BBC. On Twitter several users echoed this sentiment. Abraham Wilbourne, a financial analyst from Nairobi, told Wanja "You have a seat in heaven!" Many called her a "mashujaa", which means "hero" in Swahili. "People say I changed Hinga's life, but he changed mine too." says Wanja. "I realise now that a small act can change a person's life." |

Standing before her was a friend she had known since she was seven years old.\n\"Patrick, or Hinga as we called him, and I had met at primary school in 1992,\" says Wanja, who is a nurse from Kiambu County, just outside the Kenyan capital.\n\"Hinga used to be a great soccer player all throughout school. We nicknamed him 'Pele'.\"\n\nHinga was estranged from his parents and lived with his grandmother in a squat. When she couldn't afford to pay his school fees, he was forced to skip classes. Eventually they were evicted even from the squat. But against all the odds, Hinga did well in his exams, until his grandmother died - then he dropped out of school and his life began to take a downward trajectory.\nHinga started abusing drugs, first marijuana and then heroin. He spent hours sifting through garbage to find things he could sell on the streets.\nHinga and Wanja lost touch.\n\nWhen they met again, more than 15 years later, Hinga had been homeless for more than a decade. He looked nothing like the childhood friend who had once been known as \"Pele\".\nSensing Wanja's dismay, Hinga reassured her that he had only wanted to say hello. She asked him if she could buy him lunch. At a local cafe, she ordered the dish she remembered had been his favourite years earlier - pork ribs and mashed potatoes. She said he appeared distracted, unable to finish sentences.\n\"I gave him my mobile telephone number and told him to call me if he needed anything,\" Wanja says.\nOver the next couple of days, Hinga borrowed phones and would regularly call his childhood friend, often just to hear her voice for a chat. He told her that he was committed to getting clean from drugs.\n\"I decided then, that something needed to be done to help him,\" Wanja says.\n\nTaking to social media, Wanja appealed to her friends to see if she could raise funds for drug rehabilitation.\n\"Rehab here is very expensive and I had no ways of raising funds on my own,\" she says.\n\"We set up a crowdfunding page, but we only managed to raise around 41,000 Kenyan shillings (£300) initially. However the cost of nine days rehabilitation at Chiromo Lane Medical Center in Nairobi was more than 100,000 KES.\n\"I wasn't sure how we would be able to cover this.\"\nBut Wanja had promised to help Hinga, so she took him to the centre anyway, unsure how they would cover the cost.\n\nA spokesperson for the rehab programme says Hinga was a dedicated patient, who committed fully to the nine-day detox.\nWithin days Hinga had gained weight and his concentration improved. Wanja took to Facebook to speak about her pride at her friend's transformation in such a short period of time.\n\"A week ago Hinga and I couldn't hold a normal conversation without me trying to hold his head up with my hand in order for him to concentrate. Today we can have a normal conversation with him confidently looking at me,\" she wrote.\nMombasa businessman Fauz Khalid spotted Wanja's public post on Facebook and said he wanted to share the story on a wider platform. He posted the photos on Twitter and his post has now been shared more than 50,000 times.\nSkip Twitter post by @FauzKhalid\nAfter that, the Kenyan media began to cover the story and Chiromo Lane Medical Center agreed to waive the entire fee for Hinga's treatment.\nWanja says this was \"a blessing\", but she was keen for her friend to undergo a more sustained recovery, and is now raising funds for him to follow a 90-day programme at The Retreat Rehabilitation Centre, where he is currently staying.\nHeroin in Kenya\nIt is estimated that between 20,000 and 55,000 Kenyans inject heroin but Kenya does not have a government-funded rehabilitation facility\nAccording to the International Drugs Policy Consortium, heroin was used in first in cities which were transit points (such as Mombasa) before spreading to Nairobi and other parts of the country\nThe National Campaign Against Drug Abuse, a Kenyan government research body, says it is monitoring 25,000 intravenous drug users around the country - the number of people who snort heroin could be even higher, according to the Anti-Narcotics Unit officials\nMost of the world's heroin is produced in Afghanistan, and reaches markets in Europe and North America via Central Asia and the Balkans - but the quantity of heroin seized off the coast of Kenya and neighbouring Tanzania has increased exponentially in the last eight years, leading the UN to conclude that the \"Southern Route,\" is growing in importance\n\n\"Unfortunately, there is still great stigma around drug abuse in Kenya,\" Wanja says. This may be one reason why the government doesn't provide free drug rehab treatment.\n\"Rehabs are expensive and out of reach for many people, not only in Kenya but also the greater part of Africa. I am committed to crowdsourcing so I can support my friend at this time,\" says Wanja.\n\"Wanja is an angel sent from God. I owe her my life. She has stuck with me more closely than a brother or a sister,\" Hinga tells the BBC.\nOn Twitter several users echoed this sentiment. Abraham Wilbourne, a financial analyst from Nairobi, told Wanja \"You have a seat in heaven!\" Many called her a \"mashujaa\", which means \"hero\" in Swahili.\n\"People say I changed Hinga's life, but he changed mine too.\" says Wanja. \"I realise now that a small act can change a person's life.\"",

| body | Last summer, public health experts were on high alert due to the rapid spread of the Zika virus, which has now been proven to cause birth defects and other health problems in infants. Today, experts know far more about the virus than they did at the start of the outbreak. Here’s what you need to know now about Zika. Should pregnant women worry about Zika while traveling? Short answer: yes. “Our general advice is that if you are pregnant, you should not go to places where Zika virus transmission is ongoing,” says Dr. Lyle Petersen, director of the division of vector-borne diseases at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). “It’s all a matter of risk. Obviously, if you are staying in an air-conditioned hotel, your risk may be less. However, are you willing to take that risk? We know the consequences of infection of the fetus are huge and lifelong.” Petersen recommends people check the CDC website for guidance on what locations have active Zika transmission. The CDC updates this list regularly, sometimes on a daily basis. If an area is no longer on the list, Petersen says it’s considered safe to travel. Currently, the CDC recommends that if a pregnant woman or her partner travel to an area with Zika, the couple should use condoms every time they have sex or avoid sex for the rest of the pregnancy, even if they do not have symptoms of Zika. Should women who plan to get pregnant avoid traveling to places with Zika? Women who are planning to get pregnant, and their partners, should also pay attention to where they are traveling. The first trimester, during which women may not know they are pregnant, appears to be the most risky time when it comes to Zika-related health complications for infants down the line. The CDC recommends that women who travel to areas with Zika who want to get pregnant in the near future wait at least eight weeks after their last possible exposure to the virus before trying to conceive. For male partners, the CDC advises waiting six months after the last possible exposure before trying to conceive. Using condoms is also recommended for the waiting period. What if I am invited to a destination wedding in a place with Zika? Should I not go? It may be challenging to get a firm yes or no from your doctor about whether or not you should travel for a major event, though the recommendations are not to go to places with active Zika transmission if you’re pregnant or want to be soon. “My job is to give guidance; I never tell people what to do,” says Dr. Richard Beigi, the chief medical officer of the Magee-Womens Hospital of University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. “But I think the travel warnings are there for a reason, and nothing has changed from last year other than the fact that we have more information that has validated that Zika causes congenital health problems. The overall risk is the same.” Deciding to travel despite the risk is ultimately a personal decision. “I ask my patients, ‘Do you really need to go?’ For some people, the answer to that is yes, and that’s fine, and I give them the best advice I can,” Beigi says. Should I worry about traveling to places that have the types of mosquitoes that can spread Zika? The CDC recently reported that the types of mosquito that carry Zika, Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, are appearing in more counties in the southern U.S. where they haven’t been before. But unless the mosquitoes are transmitting Zika, there’s a “very, very, very low risk,” Petersen says. “In all of the places where we have this kind of mosquito that can spread Zika virus, we also see the kinds of mosquitoes that can spread West Nile and other diseases,” says Petersen. “General mosquito precautions in the summer are important for everybody—not only pregnant women.” How likely is it that I will get Zika? Experts can’t give a definitive answer to a person’s chances of getting Zika if they travel to a place that has reported spread of the disease. But experts are getting closer to understanding the likelihood of adverse events should a pregnant woman get infected. A recent study found that one in 10 pregnant women in the U.S. with a Zika infection had a baby with brain damage or other serious birth defects. The first trimester was the most critical time: 15% of women with confirmed Zika infection in the first trimester had babies with birth defects. Another study found similar numbers for women in U.S. territories, revealing that during their first trimester, nearly 1 in 12 had a baby or fetus with Zika-associated birth defects. “Out of the data collected, it appears that 5-10% of the time a woman gets Zika during her pregnancy, there will be in impact,” says Beigi. “Most of the impact is a malfunction; some of it is miscarriage. Probably the absolute risk of you having a problem is not very big, but it’s not zero, and it’s hard to know.” How bad will Zika get in the U.S. this summer? It’s unclear how many cases of Zika will be expected in and outside the U.S. this summer, though experts say it could be lower than last year. “Based on historical evidence, we would expect that outbreaks this year throughout the Western Hemisphere are going to be less than they were the year before,” says Petersen. “It’s not going away, but since a lot of people have already been infected and are no longer susceptible to infection, it will lower the number of cases over time.” So far in 2017, about 650 Americans have gotten Zika, though that it is considered an underestimate. Most people do not experience symptoms and will not know they have the virus. |

| body | https://youtu.be/19ELb9zSADE ust when you thought it was safe to go back in the water – well, actually, it is! Seth Gordon’s Baywatch calls lifeguard legends Mitch Buchannon and C.J. Parker back to their famed tower post, but this time with reboot appeal. “Out” is David Hasselhoff, replaced by the biggest Johnson on any beach – Dwayne Johnson. He’s a rock-hard hero training a new set of recruits, including rookies played by Zac Efron, Alexandra Daddario and Jon Bass. Now isn’t a time for fun, however, as Johnson must solve bikini-clad crimes while whipping his egotistical, untrained newbies into shape – all in a days work for Baywatch’s finest. At the film’s world premiere down in Miami last week, I had the opportunity to interview Johnson about Mitch Buchannon’s return. Both pre-screening and during our chat, his passion for resurrecting Baywatch on screen was more than obvious. Hasselhoff and Pam Anderson turned their lifeguard series into a pop-culture phenomenon, and Johnson’s hopes are equally similar. With a Memorial Day weekend release, how better to celebrate summer’s kickoff than a sunny, water-soaked comedy? You can expect jiggly slow-motion, Johnson’s intensity and a light sense of humor – none of which should come as a shock. During our interview, Johnson dove into how the long-gestating Baywatch movie came to fruition. Was Hasselhoff keen on passing the whistle? Were fans of the original receptive to remake talk? What’s the new team’s angle? Johnson got into the core of his intentions for Baywatch, and what audiences can expect. Also, we threw around a little dirt on his upcoming D.C. character Black Adam – including who he wants to see play Shazam. Name and all. Hear what the actor has to say in the video up above and be sure to check out Baywatch when it opens on Friday! |

| body | There is a lot of talk about horror movies in the non-horror-movie-watching community. Many of its films are simply kept at a respectful distance, non-horror fans politely avoiding them on the basis that they just do not see the attraction in voluntarily frightening the life out of oneself. But over the last ten years or so, certain types of film have gained a different sort of notoriety among non-horror audiences. These are, of course, those films whose content is noticeably extreme; films such as The Hills Have Eyes, Saw, Hostel and various remakes of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre are among the most obvious titles. Aversion to the graphically bloody, the excessively violent and to the dependence on worryingly disturbing storylines has grown, with concerns that such movies are losing regard for the boundaries of decency echoing frequently through the film world. The advent of horribly descriptive terms such as ‘torture porn’ hasn’t exactly helped, either. But there seem to be two things to say about this. Firstly, it is a complete misconception that gratuitous gore and violence is new to horror films– a quick whistle-stop tour of the last sixty years of the genre with which to verify a few details on this left me wanting to wash my own eyeballs. Also, gore features in many other areas of film without causing the sort of reaction that it is designed to have in the horror genre. The finale of Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained rivals The Shining for the most amount of blood ever seen in a hallway, yet Django is not a horror film. Somewhat unavoidably referencing another Tarantino non-horror, the House of Blue Leaves battle scene in Kill Bill appears in black and white, meaning that the astonishing level of blood shed is to some extent disguised (Tarantino’s actual reason for including black and white sections in Kill Bill was to pay homage to the method of censoring Japanese martial arts films that were screened in the US during the 1970s and 1980s, but the point about the volume of blood still stands – over 450 gallons worth of point, to be precise). Natural Born Killers was also shockingly grisly but again, this is not counted as a horror film. Most people could have probably made a pretty passable attempt at a human anatomy exam after seeing the first ten minutes of Saving Private Ryan but this is an entirely different genre, again. Clearly then, horror movies can’t be dismissed on the basis of having an exclusive monopoly on the sickening and the disgusting, right? This leads neatly into the second point, which is that some of history’s all-time most frightening films actually contain very little that is visually graphic: Rosemary’s Baby, Poltergeist and Psycho are among the most obvious examples here. The sorts of gore-fest that tend to cause the most offense are not generally the ones that have achieved the most lasting and recognized ability to provoke horror. What all this seems to suggest is that there are in fact two distinct things that are important to horror movies – and that this is clearly recognized by both horror fans and non-horror fans alike. At their very basis, these two things could be defined as that which we don’t see, and that which we do. But given that its nature is to include some of the most extreme concepts in cinema, the horror genre also has a wonderful and complex ability to flirt with the boundaries of what it can cover; the funny and the serious, the real and the supernatural, the ridiculous and the realistic – every aspect of the human experience from life to death seems to feature in here somewhere at some point. On closer inspection then, it turns out that we might even be able to see a sort of spectrum that spans between those two basic points – a sort of scale on which horror films of whatever type, nature or level of success will have a justified place. What follows here is a brief experimental journey along that spectrum, beginning with those films that depend on keeping much unseen and moving the whole way along through to those films whose intention is to show as much as (in)humanly possible. Being as wide and as diverse as the field of horror is, it is with enormous reluctance that so many titles have had to be left out. But the hope is to have covered at least a couple of decent representatives from every area of this most weird, clever, daft, distressing and ultimately versatile of all movie genres. Strap in, folks, this is a long one… |

| body | One of the reasons so many cast members have been able to keep returning to American Horror Story is because they're unrecognizable from season-to-season. While the actors have to morph into each bizarre persona, the show's award-winning makeup and costume designers certainly play an important part in these amazing transformations. Kathy Bates has had many memorable roles on American Horror Story over the years, but her character from AHS: Freak Show is perhaps her most iconic. She plays a world-weary bearded lady, and she does it with and no-nonsense attitude that almost makes you forget the beard is even there. When you're gatekeeper to the spirit world, you'd better look the part. In AHS: Coven, Lance Reddick does just that. He's entirely convincing as Papa Legba thanks in part to his otherwordly, voodoo-inspired appearance. Lily Rabe had big shoes to fill when it came to playing real-life serial killer Aileen Wuornos. After all, Charlize Theron won an Oscar for her portrayal in 2003's Monster. Rabe offered a sauntering performance for AHS: Hotel, but her methodical mannerisms are just a part of the creepiness. Makeup artists turned her into a shiver-inducing dead ringer of the notorious murderer. Denis O'Hare's transformation into a transgender woman is thorough–and not just on the outside. Aside from the makeup and outfits, O'Hare gave a nuanced performance that showed the emotional impact transitioning can have. Liz Taylor is the heart and soul of the Hotel Cortez, and she is simply fabulous. If you didn't already know Grace Gummer is Meryl Streep's daughter, you would have had a tough time seeing the resemblance in AHS: Freak Show. To achieve her look as "Lizard Girl," she endured daily application of an elaborate puzzle of prosthetic tattoos that covered her entire head and neck. Although her forked tongue was added in post-production, she did sometimes have to wear a silicon applique. |

"body": "\nOne of the reasons so many cast members have been able to keep returning to American Horror Story is because they're unrecognizable from season-to-season. While the actors have to morph into each bizarre persona, the show's award-winning makeup and costume designers certainly play an important part in these amazing transformations.\n\nKathy Bates has had many memorable roles on American Horror Story over the years, but her character from AHS: Freak Show is perhaps her most iconic. She plays a world-weary bearded lady, and she does it with and no-nonsense attitude that almost makes you forget the beard is even there.\n\nWhen you're gatekeeper to the spirit world, you'd better look the part. In AHS: Coven, Lance Reddick does just that. He's entirely convincing as Papa Legba thanks in part to his otherwordly, voodoo-inspired appearance.\n\nLily Rabe had big shoes to fill when it came to playing real-life serial killer Aileen Wuornos. After all, Charlize Theron won an Oscar for her portrayal in 2003's Monster. Rabe offered a sauntering performance for AHS: Hotel, but her methodical mannerisms are just a part of the creepiness. Makeup artists turned her into a shiver-inducing dead ringer of the notorious murderer.\n\nDenis O'Hare's transformation into a transgender woman is thorough–and not just on the outside. Aside from the makeup and outfits, O'Hare gave a nuanced performance that showed the emotional impact transitioning can have. Liz Taylor is the heart and soul of the Hotel Cortez, and she is simply fabulous.\n\nIf you didn't already know Grace Gummer is Meryl Streep's daughter, you would have had a tough time seeing the resemblance in AHS: Freak Show. To achieve her look as \"Lizard Girl,\" she endured daily application of an elaborate puzzle of prosthetic tattoos that covered her entire head and neck. Although her forked tongue was added in post-production, she did sometimes have to wear a silicon applique.",

| body | Donald Trump. The name alone evokes so. many. emotions. But today, on his 70th birthday, we don’t want to focus on his politics. No, instead we want to focus on his hair. Over the years, his blonde locks haven’t really changed all that much (but his tan certainly has). Check out how Mr. Trump’s combover has evolved from the ‘70s all the way to today. 1976 1982 1983 1984 1985 1986 1987 1988 1989 1990 1991 1992 1993 1994 1995 ............................ 2016 |

| body | Apple officially announced its deal to buy popular headphones maker Beats Electronics and its related streaming music service, Beats Music, for $3 billion, the company announced on Wednesday. Previous reports had the price slightly higher at $3.2 billion. Beats co-founders Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre will join Apple as part of the deal, which will likely close by September, Apple said. The acquisition takes the form of a $2.6 billion in cash and around $400 million in stock. When the deal was first announced, Dr. Dre called himself “the first billionaire in hip hop.” Whether or not that’s true, he will definitely make a lot of money from the deal. “I’ve always known in my heart that Beats belonged with Apple,” Iovine said in the press release, which also included the following photo of new best friends Jimmy Iovine, Apple CEO Tim Cook, Dr. Dre and Apple’s senior vice president of Internet software and services, Eddy Cue. The Beats purchase turned heads in the tech world, since Apple doesn’t make as many high-profile acquisitions as Google, Facebook and its other Silicon Valley competitors. But the $3 billion buy won’t hurt Apple’s bottom line: With $159 billion in its coffers, the iPhone maker has more cash than any other non-financial company in the U.S., according to Moody’s. Other critics of the deal wondered why a company known for the quality of its hardware would want to own Beats by Dre headphones, which don’t have the best reputation among audiophiles. This April, a comprehensive Time magazine survey ranked Beats by Dre 17th among 18 headphones makers. Audio quality aside, Apple may be able to juice sales of the iPhone, its biggest money maker, by offering pairs of Beats along with it, The Atlantic’s Derek Thompson argued. Any little increase in phone sales would make for a healthy boost to the company’s profits, simply because the iPhone is so big for Apple. |
