| body | Placeholders mark the times of his life. They stand tall and straight, great pillars of solid stone. They also, however, limply flop over to one side like a poisoned flower. All he does now is show up to his little cubical and slowly die, just like this poor flower. He is it, flushed with color and doomed. Flower him, bowing further each year as his back takes the shape of a modern day wage slave. His eyes burn into a monitor and his ass cushions the entire wreck of this strange human/machine hybrid. Built perfectly to enrich those above him, this form would be unrecognizable by Shakespeare. His mind is failing too, and being less sharp it can no longer vividly project onto the black walls of his head a future worth living. Not that his soul would care much if it did manage to pull off this feat, because an optimist show being played in his mind would merely bring scorn from his bitter inner self. He’s fuel by a trick, and more tricks would only flare the process further. The propaganda works to keep his heart beating. The blood moves around his body and some strange science keeps him from jumping out the window. Those place holders are all he has left, the only remaining thing that makes him human. Some of the newer ones are fake, mere mirages painted in haste by an overstimulated fight or flight mechanism. The older ones though, those stone giants cut so perfectly, white in the sun of his mind, unmoving and a constant source of comfort, well those are real, and he lifts his head up from his plane of misery often, just to look upon them. Things have happened to him. He has lived a life. He can see- no, he can FEEL, that the real world existed, and that he was a part of it. Placeholders as high as mountains formed from his first kiss...glorious. Formed from a scored goal to win a game, from a love tried that broke a heart, from a dangerous deed done recklessly, these were true marvels. Placeholders so big that it doesn’t matter how far away they are. His human life is small, after-all, so decades mean nothing. He simply lifts his head from the plane of misery, sticky with the foul slime of disgust, and he squints hard while glancing back. Without fail those towers stand strong every time, and a small joy seeps into him. What does such a creature feel just then? How does this help him? And why does he lower his head again? Perhaps we grant that he cannot simply lift himself completely, and in so doing free himself from the bonds the plane straps against him. He cannot then turn around and face these towers squarely. He cannot then step towards them, and wading through the plane, chest high, steady stepping towards the shore ahead. He cannot claw his way onto some distance beachhead out there near the towers, and he cannot come to a place right up against them. And he most assuredly cannot lift them, between his two pinched fingers, and drop them into his mouth. He just will never be able to swallow them like that, and that impossible pill can never flood his body with healing stuff. Yes, we will grant him this. He, out there, is not a caged animal bashing against the cage’s door, hoping for freedom. He, the one we see now, is more the animal in a cell, who wakes in the morning so that he might peak out the window when darkness breaks to light. This one we speak of is hopeless in the true sense of the word—contently doomed. Enter her. Her existence immediately manifests a placeholder (so oddly placed out ahead), which shimmers golden—the size of a middle school set on edge, and rimmed with pearls at its base. This small size is offset though by how freaking close it is. Right there! He peals his body off the surface to reach towards it. His body is so twisted from countless years of looking back that the angles don’t work out, and his hands fall well short on each attempt. But alas, this matters not at all. Because of the nature of its placement out ahead of him, in the future, he need only wait. This placeholder is real, and it is nearing! Next day, after an entire night of joyfully flailing around on the sticky plane, obviously too far away for contact with the gold goddess, but laughing like mad all the same, he eased into his coffin chair and let his bosses lay into him. He has seven bosses, and each of them loves to berate him. At least they outwardly convey a love and passion for the dehumanization they unleash. He did not care this day though, and would not care after lunch, and that night he would not peak back, would ignore for once those ancient mountain placeholders for something closer and straight ahead. He would start to straighten out, and his skeleton would crack and cry at his attempts to take on his old form. He would eat the shit of his masters and lick up every bit of mind-fuck propaganda spit down onto him from above. He’d be liking her, and waiting for that gold glow to inch nearer. Nearer and nearer and nearer. His broken form would be reaching out, and one day soon his gathered strength would hold an extra beat, and instead of splatting back down onto the sticky plane of horror, his outstretched fingers would land in mercy on that golden placeholder. And then the gold would become him. This, he figures (poor creature), is what life is. |

"body": "Placeholders mark the times of his life. Without fail those towers stand strong every time, and a small joy seeps into him.\n\nWhat does such a creature feel just then? This one we speak of is hopeless in the true sense of the word—contently doomed.\n\nEnter her. This placeholder is real, and it is nearing!\n\nNext day, after an entire night of joyfully flailing around on the sticky plane, obviously too far away for contact with the gold goddess, but laughing like mad all the same, he eased into his coffin chair and let his bosses lay into him. | title | Fire World |
| body | Seas of fire blew in from the prairie one day and never left. This is what we tell each other. This is our lore. The flames ebb down in the draws for a few hours each day early in the morning, so most of us unplug. Some have simply stopped caring though, and their houses remain shut like vaults, even during this peace. Nights are the worst, when the flames mix with moonlight and scream. We all stay inside at night to protect against this. Even in my home though, the most well built of all, with my shutters clamped tight and my blankets pull high about my chin, the flames still lick at me. They seep in like sand through the tiniest clacks and holes to touch my body and flash their pain. Right before dawn it starts to burn and boil in a doubled effort. Panic sets in because there is no place to go. You are as far away from the world as you can get, you are deep inside of yourself even, pushed back into that far corner of your mind, and yet the flames break like waves over your naked soul and burn, burn, burn. Then those lovely streaks of sunlight start to shine, and the flames turn to look, and you can soothe the places is has scorched. As the morning grows the flames shrink away, gathering low in the draws. Is it gathering strength down there? Do the waters of our cricks re-nourish it? Does it drink! For these glorious early hours we work like bees. At least we used to, back when there was hope. Seems like many of us feel there isn’t any left though, so you may see us simply sitting on our porches in awe, or lying lazily in the grass, day dreaming about a world without fire. Our stone tongues melt and we talk again—we even laugh, here in this respite. We... We play. I’ve danced. And I’ve runs so fast down the lanes for no reason at all. Oh how it feels so clean to run fast without the flame’s constant burn nipping right behind. Then those horrid pops commence, down there where the fire drinks the water. Booms and cracks, like near whip strikes and far bomb blasts. We stay though—still we stay and refuse to believe, and only the screams of the first burned herd us back inside our cages. Those nightmare screams of utter agony haunt us all. I would take a thousand years of predawn roasting over a single minute of the new day’s first strike. If you are among those poor creatures chosen for sacrifice, the screams you loose just then are not from you at all, because you are already gone. Those flame take these victims away, and the remaining bodies, frantic with panic, run in worthless circles. There exists nothing good about this, and nobody has been taken and come back quite the same. And so at the sound of those screams we lower our heads and enter our prisons like beaten animals. Kids and adults alike shore up the doors and windows and stuff wadding into the visible cracks. Tea is put on the stove and books are brought out. From you my dear reader, I might hear said this: “Well, surely this is a pleasant time as well? Seems so.” Could you though, absolutely could you, be any further from the truth if you had tried! This time with the tea on and the books out and the flames pacing around outside like wolves looking for the weak, is a devil-brought terror storm. Gathering gathering gathering. The pain merely leaves the skin and jumps into the brain. And brain pain is the foulest by far. So it is that when those first little licks and kisses begin upon your skin, you watch with relieve as the pain leaps from your mind and onto your skin. There are several hours hence that are perfectly fine. No work outside can be done, but short trips out and about cost very little in the universal currency of our pain. A few hours more though and outside might as well be outer space, and inside is no place for living. Life gets pushed into the background and in steps survival, who will take us bravely all of the way until that final predawn strike. At which point, as I’ve said, even brave survival cowers, and only guide-less horror reins. That is pretty much it, and there is no way to change it. In a way it is beautiful and we are fortunate. I could think of much worse. I’ll probably try to make the best of this, and find some beauty shining like gold amongst the little details. |

| title | The Tower |
| body | Got to put this machine on the heads of these crazy people so they don’t shit in the street or whatever. Nine to five type work. Strapping them down, cutting off their clothes, checking them out, making notes, then putting this machine on their heads. Some work for a doctor! Half the time I wish it were me getting the machine. So many fucked up things travel your mind when you work in The Tower...fixing the world. You see we don’t like people shitting in the streets. Had some sort of convention awhile back, deciding once and for all we don’t like that kind of thing. We don’t like a lot of things, turns out. Talking to yourself and being rude, smelling bad and scratching your privates, not understanding the world, or simply be dull, all these things and a million more get you the machine. I threaten my wife with it. I’d fry her brain in a second if she tried to take me down. She could too, because she knows I keep that mad man Charlie in the garden shed. Jesus, if they only knew that every night I shared a highball with a tier 1 madman. They wouldn’t even bother with the machine, they’d just throw me off the bridge. There would be a lot of confusion though, and things would be crazy for a few hours, so I’d probably have time to fry my old lady’s brain, and she knows it too. Charlie is out there all day sharpening my shovels and writing his masterpiece. After dinner I take two glasses filled with ice and walk down the groomed paths. Under a fold of moss I keep our bottle. This week we have a fine nearly century old Molman, and Charlie has been so delightful. Just last night he even told a– well, almost a joke. He speaks non stop about murder and revolution, but I can veer him away at times, to muse about love or music or the stars. He says one night he’ll run me through with my very own shovel, then go inside to do my wife, load up my guns in the wagon, and take them down to the marsh, where he says a hundred men will be waiting. He says he’s been taking to them and that they are all ready—but I seriously doubt that. I can see why people don’t like the machine and all, but to think of Charlie gathering them all together and getting them on the same heinous page as he, is beyond all reason. I root for him of course. Every night I hold a glass and the bottle in my left hand, and a glass in my right hand, and when I open the door I sort of expose my belly for him. He never runs me through though. He never will. No, I’ll keep strapping those fools down and blasting their brains, and all that street shitting will just fade away. Hell, someday they even find old Charlie here, and they blast his brain, and they’ll throw me off the bridge, and there’ll be no more of this nasty business we’re up to. After all, if you’re getting rid of street shitters but you leave me and Charlie around then you got some problems of you own. Tonight the moon is out, in a half sleepy recline, beneath and blanket of fluffy white cloud. It is raining, or sprinkling quite hard, but I stay outside, even though I could take refuge in the long seedling greenhouse, and hear that tremendous sound from in there. I could stay out of the rain, hear that calamity playing upon the roof, smell the moist earth, and walk that sparkling moonlight detour nearly all the way to the shed. But no, I stay in the rain. In fact I slow. My feet are boulders, plopping down one after the other with terrible effort. I am drenched. I look down at the glasses of ice and they are filled with water. I turn them out onto the grass, and then I drop them completely. I pull the cork from the bottle and venture a swig, but I gag and heave with nausea. I want to fall into the mud gathering on the side of the path, but I move forward. Why would I open this door! Inside the garden shack the shovel fly true, and Charlie raises his eyes into mine. I’m holding my guts in with my rain drenched evening shirt. And for the first time in my life, I’m truly hopeful for the future. |

| body | I did some research. Apparently, pulp fiction is the style of writing very stylized from the 40's and 50's. It usually is told in first person with the main character getting it in the head repeatedly. Pulps were very popular before TV. So "newPulp" is anything written in the style but not the old Pulp Fiction. Plus, it differentiates itself from the movie by the same name. Your cowboy story seems to be new pulp in that it hearkens back to the pulp form. Pulp fiction was anything on the newsstand from westerns, mysteries, romance, sci-fi, etc. It rarely went over 6-10,000 words and could be read on the bus. |
