      "body": "A film that fictionalises the sexual abuse a teenager suffers at the hands of her skiing coach was only possible thanks to the MeToo movement, its director says.\n\nSlalom, set in a competitive ski club in the French Alps, is Charlène Favier's first feature film. French actress Noée Abita plays Lyz, a 15-year-old girl who is accepted into a ski club that trains professional athletes up to an Olympic standard. She is groomed by her coach, Fred, played by In Bruges actor Jérémie Renier.\n\nFavier says that she grew up in the Alps and skied competitively as a girl, but that \"Slalom is not my story - it's not autobiographical in the true sense of the word\".\n\n\"I did indeed experience someone having a hold over me, but in another sporting context. I preferred to use fiction because it allowed me to take a step back from my own story. Around me, I heard many stories of young girls who had experienced what I talk about in the film. It can explain in some way what can happen - you have that intensity and drive, and that's the point at which young people can be taken advantage of.\"\n\nNoée Abita\nIMAGE COPYRIGHTCURZON HOME CINEMA\nCharlène Favier is herself critical of the training system for young people within sports, and its historic lack of boundaries.\n\n\"It can happen with girls, it can also happen with boys, so this film tells the world that we have to put up a boundary,\" she says.\n\n\"It cannot be that there are no rules, just because the young people are there to potentially compete at the Olympics one day.\n\n\"Parents need to be there, they need to be focused on their children and not to just blindly accept that trainers know what they're doing. In my film, it's a small club, and that's worse, because it's less people and less money, so the trainer does everything alone and it opens the door to a big mess, a disaster.\"\n\nSlalom was selected in the 2020 Cannes Film Festival, although the full event was never physically held due to Covid-19. As the film is released online in the UK, Favier says that writing it was therapeutic.\n\n\"I make films to say the things that I've never been able to,\" she says. \"When I realised I was writing a story about sexual abuse, I was so afraid of the subject I almost stopped writing.\n\n\"But my producer, and other people around me, helped me to face the subject, and my own story. It ended up being so helpful to me to make this film, as the journey took five years, and I grew up a lot making Slalom.       "body": "When it comes to the coronavirus vaccine there is one question most people are asking - when will I get it? A handful of countries have set very specific vaccination targets, but for the rest of the world the picture is less clear.\n\nGetting the world vaccinated against Covid-19 is a matter of life and death, involving complicated scientific processes, multinational corporations, government promises and backroom deals. So figuring out when and how everyone in the world will get the vaccine is not easy.\n\nAgathe Demarais is the director of global forecasting at the Economist Intelligence Unit, which has done some of the most comprehensive research on the topic. She has looked at the world's production capacity, along with the healthcare facilities needed to get vaccines into people's arms, the number of people a country has to contend with, and what they can afford.\n\nCoronavirus cases, deaths, vaccinations by country\nWill countries be left behind in the vaccine race?\nThe vaccines that work - and the others on the way\nMany of the findings seem to fall along predictable lines of rich v poor. The UK and the US are both well supplied with vaccines right now because they could afford to invest a lot of money into vaccine development and put themselves at the front of the queue.\n\nRich countries that didn't do that, like Canada or those in the EU bloc, are a little further behind. Canada was criticised at the end of last year for buying up five times the supply it needs to cover its population, but it seems it wasn't positioned for priority delivery.\n\nThat's partly because the country decided to invest in vaccines from European factories, afraid that the US under Donald Trump would issue export bans. It turned out to be a bad bet. European factories are struggling with supply and recently it has been the EU, not the US, that has been threatening export bans.\n\n\"As long as the European market doesn't have enough vaccines, I think that big imports to Canada are going to remain off the cards,\" says Ms Demarais. Most low-income countries haven't started vaccinating yet. But some countries in the middle are doing better than expected.\n\nCORONAVIRUS\nGlobal vaccine rollout\nEnter a country or territory to find out the progress of the vaccine rollout\nType in 2 or more characters for results.\n\nSerbia is eighth in the world in terms of the percentage of its population vaccinated, ahead of any country in the EU.\n\nIts success is partly down to an efficient roll-out but it's also benefitting from vaccine diplomacy - a battle between Russia and China for influence in eastern Europe. It's one of the few places where the Russian vaccine Sputnik V and the Chinese vaccine SinoPharm are already available.\n\nOn paper, Serbians are given a choice of what vaccine they would prefer - Pfizer, Sputnik or SinoPharm. In reality, most people end up being given SinoPharm.\n\nAnd the influence China is exerting here is likely to be long-term. Countries giving a first and second dose of one of the Chinese vaccines are also likely to look to Beijing for booster doses if needed.\n\nIndia: How do you vaccinate a billions people?\nAfrica's long wait for the Covid-19 vaccine\nWhat's the problem with the EU's vaccine programme?\nThe United Arab Emirates is also relying heavily on the SinoPharm vaccine - it makes up 80% of the doses being administered there right now. And the UAE is building a SinoPharm production facility.\n\n\"China is coming with production facilities, trained workers, so it's going to give long-term influence to China,\" says Ms Demarais. \"And it will make it very, very tricky for recipient governments to say no to China for anything in the future.\"\n\nBeing a global vaccine superpower, however, doesn't mean your population will be vaccinated first. The EIU's research predicts two of the world's vaccine production powerhouses, China and India, may not be sufficiently vaccinated until the end of 2022. That's because they have huge populations to contend with, as well as a shortage of health workers.\n\nA world map showing which countries have administered Covid-19 vaccines\nIn India, the country's success as a Covid vaccine producer is largely down to one man, Adar Poonawalla. He's chief executive of the Serum Institute of India, the world's largest vaccine producer.\n\nLast year, his family started to think he has lost his mind when he began betting hundreds of millions of dollars of his own money on vaccines that he didn't know would work.\n\nIn January, the first of those vaccines, developed by Oxford and AstraZeneca, was delivered to the Indian government. Now he's producing 2.4 million doses a day. He's one of two main suppliers to the Indian government - and is also supplying Brazil, Morocco, Bangladesh and South Africa.\n\n'Magic sauce'\n\"I thought the pressure and all the madness would end now that we've made the product,\" he says. \"But the real challenge is trying to keep everybody happy.\n\n\"I thought there'd be so many other manufacturers who would be able to supply. But sadly, at the moment at least, in the first quarter, and perhaps even the second quarter of 2021, we're not going to see a substantial increase in supply.\"\n\nHe says production cannot be ramped up overnight. \"It takes time,\" Mr Ponnawalla adds. \"People think that the Serum Institute has got a magic sauce. Yes, we're good at what we do but it's not a magic wand.\" He currently has an edge because he started building facilities in March last year, as well as stockpiling things like chemicals and glass vials in August.\n\nFor manufacturers starting production now, it will take months to produce vaccines. And the same applies to any boosters that might be needed to tackle new variants.\n\nA map showing when countries are likely to be fully vaccinated.\nMr Ponnawalla says he is committed to supplying India and then Africa through a scheme called the Covax facility.\n\nCovax, an initiative led by the WHO and other health organisations, aims to get affordable vaccines to every country in the world. Countries that can't afford vaccines will get them for free through a special fund. The rest will pay. But the theory is that they will get a better price by negotiating through the bloc than if they had done so on their own.\n\nCovax is planning to start delivering vaccines this month. But the plan is being undermined by the fact many countries involved are also negotiating their own deals on the side.\n\nMr Poonawalla says almost every leader in Africa has been in touch with him to access vaccines independently. Last week, Uganda announced it had secured 18 million doses from the Serum Institute at $7 a jab - much more than the $4 being paid by Covax. The institute says it is in talks with Uganda but denies this deal was ever signed.\n\nIn total, Mr Poonawalla's firm is due to supply 200m doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine to Covax and has promised 900m more doses in the future.\n\nThe Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention has since advised against rollout of the vaccine in countries where the South African strain is present. He says he is still committed to the scheme, but admits it faces problems. It's dealing with too many different vaccine producers, he says, each offering varying prices and timelines for delivery.\n\nWhich vaccines have greatest global reach? Pfizer/Biontech 57 countries; Oxford 34 countries; Moderna 27 countries; SinoPharm 10 countries; Sputnik V 5 countries; SinoVac 5 countries; Covavaxin 1 country\nMs Demarais and the EIU are not overly optimistic about what Covax can achieve either. The timelines for delivery of vaccines are still not clear and even if things go according to plan, the scheme only aims to cover 20-27% of a country's population this year. \"It's going to make a small marginal difference, but not a game-changer,\" she says.\n\nIn her forecast, some countries may not get widespread coverage even by 2023. Some may never be fully covered. Vaccination may not be a priority for every country, especially one that has a young population and is not seeing huge numbers of people getting sick.\n\nThe problem with that scenario is as long as the virus can prosper somewhere it will be able to mutate and migrate. Vaccine-resistant variants will continue to evolve.\n\nIt's not all bad news. Vaccines are being produced faster than ever but the scale of the task - inoculating 7.8 billion people around the world - is gigantic. And it's never been attempted before.\n\nMs Demarais believes governments should level with their people on what is possible. \"It's very difficult for a government to say, 'No, we're not going to achieve widespread immunisation coverage before several years.' He is simply extended the presents of the National Guard through the end of March. No Declaration of Martial law has copied it that I'm aware of but the effect is the same there will be a military presence in DC through March.\n\nSeveral Governors including Texas and Oklahoma and I think Arkansas have pulled their troops back home okay, sensor is no Declaration of Martial law involved!\n\nObviously you can't be criticized for declaring martial law, if you don't actually declare martial law. But you can get the same effect, with no risk; if you just keep them there, and allow the MSM to cover your backside!\n\nThere has never been a military presence of this size in DC, nor have they been kept there this long. Secondarily as far as I'm aware, Governors have not pulled National Guard back to their States from Federal use before; but I have not researched that point oh, I just have never seen it before myself.\n\nI don't know specifically what the Liberals are concerned about but they obviously fear the people which is a good starting point.       "body": "![00000.png](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmRUCKNGevQuoNxSY3ug5BJhNAeaoMRDTFTfEkGorDBLdo/00000.png)\nWith Uganda's elections due in January, there's plenty of misinformation being shared in a heated campaign which has seen serious violence.\n\nPresident Yoweri Museveni, in power since 1986, is facing a challenge from 11 candidates, amongst them a young musician known as Bobi Wine.\n\nSome of the misinformation about the campaign involves fabricated content, and in some cases videos taken out of context.\nOur first example is a widely-shared video clip, with social media users claiming it shows US President-elect Joe Biden at an event calling for the release of Bobi Wine (real name Robert Kyagulanyi).\n\nSome even claim it shows Mr Biden endorsing him in Ugandan elections.\n\nThe grey-haired white man speaking in the video can be heard saying: \"We all care about the freedom to exercise our own religion. After Sunday, we don't believe this would still be possible.\"\nAs the clock ticks down, MEPs are increasingly concerned their role in the Brexit process is being marginalized. Every day that passes is one day less they have to read the text, to scrutinize it, debate it and then vote on it. In any other trade negotiation, this would take around four months.       "body": "The Supreme Court on Friday rejected a bid launched by Texas and backed by President Donald Trump that sought to undo Joe Biden’s election wins in the key swing states of Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.\n\nThe ruling dealt a death blow to Trump’s desperate and unsuccessful efforts to reverse Biden’s projected Electoral College victory.\n\nIt came three days before electors are set to cast their ballots in their respective states, finalizing the Democratic former vice president’s win.\n\nElection law experts from the outset said that the suit was unlikely to succeed. But Trump, who himself even filed a motion to intervene in the case, had hyped up Paxton’s lawsuit as “the big one.”\n\nIn denying Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s request to file the lawsuit against the four battleground states, the Supreme Court justices said that Texas did not have the grounds to sue the other states over changes they made to their voting procedures in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.\n\n“The State of Texas’s motion for leave to file a bill of complaint is denied for lack of standing under Article III of the Constitution,” the court said. For a person or entity such as a state to have legal standing to sue, they must be able to show that they were harmed by another’s actions.\n\n“Texas has not demonstrated a judicially cognizable interest in the manner in which another State conducts its elections. All other pending motions are dismissed as moot,“the Supreme Court said.\n\nTrump in a tweet late Friday said, “The Supreme Court really let us down.”\n\n“No Wisdom, No Courage!”\nTrump’s personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani, who has led his campaign’s efforts to challenge the election results, told Newsmax in an interview, “We’re not finished. Believe me.”\n\nGiuliani told the news outlet that the Texas “case wasn’t rejected on the merits, the case was rejected on standing. So the answer to that is to bring the case now to the district court by the president, by some of the electors, alleging some of the same facts where there would be standing.”\n\n“There’s nothing that prevents us from filing these cases immediately in the district court in which the president of course would have standing, some of the electors would have standing in that their constitutional rights have been violated,” added the former New York City mayor.\n\nBut Trump, who has appointed three justices to the nine-member court, said before the Nov. 3 election that he believed the Supreme Court ultimately would decide the race.\n\n“I think it’s very important that we have nine justices” for that reason, Trump had said shortly after the death of liberal Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg in September.\n\nTrump nominated Amy Coney Barrett to replace Ginsburg. Pharmaceutical companies Pfizer, Moderna and, more recently, AstraZeneca have all announced that their vaccines have shown better-than-expected results.\n\nDr. Peter Hotez, co-director of the Center for Vaccine Development at Texas Children's Hospital, says that a vaccine release could begin for selected populations by the middle of December — and that a broader vaccination effort could soon follow.\n\n\"By the early part of next year, we're going to move pretty quickly, I think, in vaccinating a significant percentage of the [U.S.] population,\" Hotez says.\n\nHotez says that at present, all the vaccines in development work similarly, by inducing an immune response to the spike protein of the virus.\n\n\"One of the questions that I'm asked all the time is, 'Hey, doc, which vaccine are you waiting for?' And the answer is ... I'm going to take any of those vaccines that's made available to me that's authorized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration,\" he says. \"Don't overthink it. Don't wait. Get what vaccine you can.\"\nFor two decades, Hotez and his team have worked to develop low-cost global health vaccines. Now, with COVID-19, they're working on developing a vaccine that he hopes could be produced locally, so low- and middle-income countries aren't reliant on the U.S. or Europe for production.\n\"We signed an agreement with Biological E., based in India, in Hyderabad, and they are now scaling this up to 1.2 billion doses, testing it across India,\" Hotez says. \"It's very exciting for us to make a contribution.
