Nowadays, on the internet, if you try to search through this area of psychology, you would find hundreds of articles which have been written to describe the events that might take place at each stage. Some might really illustrate what you've been through and some are not. You might even stumble upon articles which were published to prove the errors in the model proposed for grieving. The truth is, not every single thing will abide by specific laws described by any individual even with a meticulous research or so especially when it involves the human emotions. Grief, for example, is a complicated reaction towards any bad news received by a perceived individual which vary between people.\n\nOriginally, this concept was introduced to give an explanation and exposure to a clinician regarding a series of responses when a patient trying to accept the fact that they are being diagnosed with terminal diseases i.e cancer. It was never intended for people who have just lost their loved one by means of death but after a considerable amount of times, people realised that both of this situations started to resemble each other. People who lost someone they love would undergo the 5 stages which have been described by Kubler-Ross:\n\n- Denial\n- Anger\n- Bargaining\n- Depression\n- Acceptance\n\nIn some medical schools if not all of them, grief is a subject which is being incorporated into the curriculum to educate people who are going to be doctors. However, the subject was taught superficially without being given much attention by lecturers thus, students were often deprived of an in-depth discussion regarding the topic which makes it difficult for them to deal with patients who experiencing grief later on. Of course, clinical experience is different from theoretical knowledge but one might say that people who don't have adequate knowledge regarding a specific subject were guaranteed to perform poorly. \n\n## The Widowhood Effect\n<br>\n\n![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmbAA4mQwS81S5vYkNi6XtS5KQmfd2uFntkGNtBTM9NY5Y/image.png)\n<center><a href=\"https://pixabay.com/en/people-man-guy-cry-tears-groom-2566201/\">By StockSnap - Pixabay</a></center>\n\nPeople usually underestimate the significance of social relations in our everyday life. We may have taken this luxury for granted without knowing its impact towards our general health. Among all others, the widowhood effect is one of the most profound examples which prove that social relations were not only needed for keeping us healthy, emotionally.\n\n____\n<center>*The widowhood effect described a long observed phenomenon whereby there is an increased mortality among individuals who lose their spouses as a consequence of bereavement* </center>\n___\n\n<div class=\"pull-right\"><center>https://steemitimages.com/DQmTzwXmXGgBzNFdvKLehAWBwHHXMfPGAb1vF2LssPhnsa9/image.png<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Anders_Zorn-The_Widow.jpg\">By Anders Zorn - Wikimedia</a></center></div>\n\nThis effect was found to affect men more than women and young adult more than an elderly. Multiple studies conducted in the past has proved that this effect was profound within six months following the death of a spouse. In some literature, however, the mortality rate among widows was found to increase significantly within 3 months after their spouses' death. The surviving spouses are more likely to be diagnosed with chronic diseases, experienced worsening of existing medical conditions and involved in an unexpected incidence within that critical period. \n\nIf people who are grieving for their spouses were to have a significant increase in the rate of mortality, then ideally, we should monitor them strictly for the first 3-6 months. However, realistically, people it is difficult to monitor people who are grieving especially for the first three months or so. People want to be left alone for a specific duration to mourn for the death of their loved one and in that particular situation, anything can potentially happen. Despite rigorous research being carried out in the past, there is no known mechanism which could explain the increased mortality rate among widows. It can be due to anything which includes:\n\n- Anxiety\n- Depression\n- Existing medical condition\n- Suicide\n\nIn a longitudinal study conducted in 1995, the increased in mortality rate among elderly widows were found to vary between 30-90% within the first three months following their spouses' death. After the critical duration, the rate of mortality plummeted to 15% which suggest a causal link between the duration of the death of the loved one with the mortality rate of the surviving spouses. What about the cause of deaths of the surviving spouses? Well, in a study conducted by Felix Elwert in 2008, he found that elderly surviving spouses have an increased rate of developing certain kind of cancers particularly lung and colon. He also concludes that there is an increased incidence of vascular diseases in both genders following the death of their loved one. This phenomenon cannot be explained yet. I mean how do we know the exact reason why people who are having an emotional response towards the death of their loved one being diagnosed with lung or colon cancer. \n\n<div class=\"pull-left\"><center>https://steemitimages.com/DQmaGKsJyrYVgCX6XovVrFYFnkhArmaLSXwXB7SpgVmxBtE/image.png<a href=\"https://pixabay.com/en/gothic-fantasy-dark-portrait-2777564/\">By darksouls1 - Pixabay</a></center></div>\n\nThere are around 380,000 elderly couples who have been included in the study conducted by Elwert which end up with the death of 317,000 elderly couples. The cause of grieves vary between genders; men are usually affected by the cause of the death of their spouses which include terminal illnesses and motor vehicle accident while women were affected by the death of their spouses (doesn't matter what the cause is).\n\nIt is important for us to encourage widows to be more actively involved in the community during the first 3 months period. I was shocked at first when he told me the detail about this platform. I have never known some kind of *social media and blogger* website combination (apart from *Steemit*) which reward you for a great created content. After 12 hours of extensive tutorial on the basic mechanism of this platform along with some explanation and hands-on tutorial of Markdown Editing, it's time to get serious and immerse myself in the world of blogging. It would be a new experience for me; I have some experience in writing an article but never in blogging. Weird isn't it? Well, if you are a medical student, you would know it is actually not. \n\n<div class=\"pull-left\"><center>https://steemitimages.com/DQmatPtTvch3Z9EELLDcH45GT5aK6h3thAmW2HEyYbyxHQb/image.png<a href=\"https://pixabay.com/en/blogging-blogger-social-media-3124879/\">Pixabay</a></center></div>\n\nAs a future health worker, I would like to emphasize more on healthy lifestyle and diseases caused by an unhealthy one. It is saddening to see the majority of patients who came to the clinic for monthly follow up for certain chronic illnesses are preventable. Education is of utmost importance when we are talking about awareness; people wouldn't know something is bad if they didn't have any knowledge regarding specific matters. However, knowing without practising will not bring any benefit either. Smoking, for example, has been a culprit to various kind of cancers. Even though there are a lot of awareness programs being held by the government or non-governmental organisation, the incidence of cancers caused by smoking hasn't been much better. Even though smokers knew puffing a cigarette is not a healthy lifestyle choice, some of them just doesn't really convinced with the facts or they knew about the fact but chose to remain ignorant. \n\nIt is important for us, someone who studied and eventually understand the pathophysiology of diseases to step up and try to educate as many people as we can. I think you know by now what kind of blog would I shape mine to be. Here are some reasons why us, someone who is related to the medical field, should blog:\n\n- **It is beneficial for the community**. People need to know in details regarding anything that concerns them to make an informed decision. However, it should be noted that in some diseases, the outcome and principle of treatment might vary depending on each individual. That's why we need a real doctor apart from an online search engine. \n\n- **To fulfil our obligation as an academics**. People should know by now the importance of academicians in the community. Each people is a potential specialist in their own respective field. An engineer wouldn't know as much as a doctor would in the context of medicine and vice versa. We need each other to fill in gaps between the known and the unknown. Every people plays an important role in a society.\n\n- **To educate ourselves**. We have potentially thousands if not millions of people who specialised in a specific field in this platform. That's relatively a rich knowledge pool which should be nurtured to create a productive environment. People should know blogging is not a space for expressing emotion and creating a personal diary only. It is a virtual space where people would be able to exchange and promote their own idea and knowledge with one another while learning something new. \n\n<div class=\"pull-right\"><center>https://steemitimages.com/DQmYzr2pLqwfAsQoUMumZrCT3ofzco6TvgEu1M8kDoJYTQv/image.png<a href=\"https://pxhere.com/en/photo/815493\">Pxhere</a></center></div>\n\nAt least, these three reasons are the things that brought me to this platform plus one more; a study published in the open access medical journal (<a href=\"https://www.cureus.com/articles/9871-a-randomized-comparative-trial-of-the-knowledge-retention-and-usage-conditions-in-undergraduate-medical-students-using-podcasts-and-blog-posts\">Cureus</a>) in January 2018 has proved that Free Open Access Medical (FOAM) education materials such as podcast and blog post improve medical student's grade significantly. Even though the focus of the study was medical students but I'm sure it will work with the other students as well. To produce a good quality content, we need to some research and read a lot. Indirectly, it cultivates and moulds your personality as an academic which could lead to a better exam's score (if that concerns you).\n\nThere are a few advantages of using blog posts compared to the traditional method of teaching:\n\n- Portable<sup><a href=\"https://www.cureus.com/articles/9871-a-randomized-comparative-trial-of-the-knowledge-retention-and-usage-conditions-in-undergraduate-medical-students-using-podcasts-and-blog-posts\">1</a></sup>\n- Ease of use<sup><a href=\"https://www.cureus.com/articles/9871-a-randomized-comparative-trial-of-the-knowledge-retention-and-usage-conditions-in-undergraduate-medical-students-using-podcasts-and-blog-posts\">1</a></sup>\n- Accessible<sup><a href=\"https://www.cureus.com/articles/9871-a-randomized-comparative-trial-of-the-knowledge-retention-and-usage-conditions-in-undergraduate-medical-students-using-podcasts-and-blog-posts\">1</a></sup> \n- Any important points in the blog could be easily incorporated into the student's note<sup><a href=\"https://www.cureus.com/articles/9871-a-randomized-comparative-trial-of-the-knowledge-retention-and-usage-conditions-in-undergraduate-medical-students-using-podcasts-and-blog-posts\">1</a></sup> \n\nThere are some factors that should be considered by the content creators to make their blog post much more acceptable by people. Kelly Lien et al have found that a blog post which contains, at most, a thousand words tend to be much more acceptable to readers depending on the type of the blog post; if the topic of the post is novel (relatively new to the reader), then exceeding the words count could be amenable. In the past, making a blog would be difficult if you want it to look presentable to the public. People spend so much money on the template design, web hosting, maybe server (optional) and sometimes a search engine optimisation service. It would generate a huge traffic but that was pretty ka-ching.\n\nA study conducted in 2010 by Edward Alan Miller has identified similar characteristics among the most popular of 951 bloggers related to health genre in the blogosphere. The similarities include:\n\n- Men<sup><a href=\"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2901304/\">2</a></sup>\n- Young adults<sup><a href=\"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2901304/\">2</a></sup>\n- Well-educated compared to the general population<sup><a href=\"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2901304/\">2</a></sup>\n\nMost of the health blogs written were personally narrated based on medical workers experiences, dealing with a certain aspect of diseases and journalism rather than informational. This can alleviate depressive symptoms, building a virtual support system and increase awareness among the public. Working as medical workers can be quite stressful and it is vital for us to know how to channel that into something beneficial (which can be achieved by blogging). Mental health awareness, stigma and empathy can be nurtured through medical education in virtual spaces provided by the online platform and I'm honestly seeing Steemit as the potential space to do just that.\n\n![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmeQiJPgdy6oJczrPo5fq2i2KurzwSqWH4bT62i7SuvGTq/image.png)\n<center><a href=\"https://pixabay.com/en/idea-creative-business-idea-proud-3313376/\">Pxhere</a></center>\n\nThe validity of the information provided by the internet might be questionable but generally, people considered the internet as a reliable source of information without giving much thought of the author's credibility; one of the many reasons why people who are involved in the medical field to blog. \"Doctors might be wrong and internet is a trustworthy sources,\" say most of the people out there. \n\nLet us build a community which thrives on knowledge. I believe someday, Steemit might be one of the most popular platforms on the internet so making it into an intellectual hub which comprises of knowledge from various fields would be ideal.
