This new system from UC Berkeley, however, builds them all at once, more or less, by projecting a video through a jar of light-sensitive resin.\n\nThe device, which its creators call the replicator (but shouldn’t, because that’s a MakerBot trademark), is mechanically quite simple. It’s hard to explain it better than Berkeley’s Hayden Taylor, who led the research:\n\nUsing light to print isn’t new — many devices out there use lasers or other forms of emitted light to cause material to harden in desired patterns. But they still do things one thin layer at a time. Researchers did demonstrate a “holographic” printing method a bit like this using intersecting beams of light, but it’s much more complex. (In fact, Berkeley worked with Lawrence Livermore on this project.)\n\nIn Taylor’s device, the object to be recreated is scanned first in such a way that it can be divided into slices, a bit like a CT scanner — which is in fact the technology that sparked the team’s imagination in the first place.\n\n<iframe width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https://www.youtube.com/embed/t5UsRDS-wqI\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen></iframe>\n\nBy projecting light into the resin as it revolves, the material for the entire object is resolved more or less at once, or at least over a series of brief revolutions rather than hundreds or thousands of individual drawing movements.\n\nThis has a number of benefits besides speed. Objects come out smooth — if a bit crude in this prototype stage — and they can have features and cavities that other 3D printers struggle to create. The resin can even cure around an existing object, as they demonstrate by manifesting a handle around a screwdriver shaft.\n\n![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmTiczu9aKxCxZjSmxA6Bnd2qBXkyE7orHom7aT1QWtrQe/image.png)\n\nNaturally, different materials and colors can be swapped in, and the uncured resin is totally reusable. Instead, we live in a world dominated by live streaming, smartphones and social networks.\n\nWhile those forecasters didn't quite get the timing right, they got the technology right. Today, we are at the brink of another technological boom. This time, technologies like self-driving vehicles and robot assistants are under development. Soon, these and the other exciting technologies described below will go mainstream, changing the world in the process.\n\n<h1>1. Voice assistants</h1>\n\nIn four years, the majority of American households are expected to own a voice assistant device like an Amazon Echo or an Apple Homepod. Thanks to the power of artificial intelligence (AI), voice assistants will grow increasingly helpful.\n\nEven today, Amazon releases regular updates to Echo in order to help owners get more from the technology. The company recently reported seeing larger-than-expected gains from its voice assistant, which is why Amazon is now doubling down on the technology.\n\nVoice assistants are making a significant impact in markets across the globe, and some observers expect that in the future we will communicate with technology through voice rather than text.\n\n<h1>2. Crispr</h1>\n\nImagine a world where crushing genetic diseases like Huntington's and cystic fibrosis can be cured. Thanks to crispr, genetic disease may be eliminated.\n\nCRISPR Cas-9 (an abbreviation standing for \"Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats\") is a gene-splicing technology capable of finding and removing mutated sections of DNA. Once this material is eliminated, crispr technology can replace the mutated sections with non-mutated variants.\n\nAs a result, crispr has the power to permanently eliminate certain types of genetic diseases from blood lines. The technology has already been used to eliminate cancer in some patients, and early results show that it may be possible to cure genetically caused blindness as well.\n\n<h1>3. Robot assistants</h1>\n\nCompanies like Boston Dynamics have already developed a wide variety of robot assistants that can be used in factories or on the battlefield. The company originally started as an arm of MIT and has since pioneered the development of intelligent robots that operate effectively in the real world.\n\nKnightscope is another company working on a line of robot assistants for security applications. For example, its K5 robot features four cameras and can recognize 300 licenses plates per minute, per camera. It can also detect suspicious networks that may be operated by hackers.\n\n<h1>4. Augmented and mixed reality</h1>\n\nJust a few years ago, it was unclear whether augmented or mixed reality would take off. Given the fact that tech giants like Apple are investing billions of dollars in augmented reality hardware, it's pretty clear that it's only a matter of time before the tech goes mainstream.\n\nFor example, Apple's latest phones are equipped with augmented reality capabilities, and a recent report suggests that the company is working on an AR headset that will replace the iPhone in two to three years.\n\n<h1>5. Regenerative medicine</h1>\n\nThough it may sound like science fiction, doctors are already producing made-to-order body parts. To get started, doctors scrape cells off the body part in question and grow them in a petri dish. In time, the body part grows strong enough that it can be implanted inside the patient.\n\nOne company, Organovo, has developed a printer capable of 3D printing body parts. In time, this new technology will become increasingly mainstream, providing patients with lifesaving organ replacements.\n\n<h1>6. Driverless vehicles</h1>\n\nAutomakers like Tesla, General Motors and Volvo have already developed semi-autonomous vehicles. But self-driving technology is rapidly evolving. General Motors announced that it will launch a car that has no steering wheel or pedals by 2019.\n\nUber, meanwhile, is leading the push for pilotless flying vehicles, and has teamed up with NASA to develop an air-traffic-control system. Uber is also working with aircraft manufacturers to develop prototypes, with the intention of launching a beta program in 2020.\n\n<h1>7.       "body": "I am fascinated by the fact that while starting well behind the effort to create autonomous cars, the development of autonomous flying vehicles has been moving like lightning. The industry has been working on flying cars since the 1940s, with the result generally being vehicles that neither drive nor fly very well. One flying effort that cost something like US$250K back in the 1970s, which was a bad blend of Cessna Skymaster and Ford Pinto, literally killed all the executives in the company.\n\nToday there are a lot of interesting ideas, though. Most of the good ones don't even try to be cars but instead focus on being great short-range fliers. (It is far easier to create autonomous planes than cars. Where the planes are hitting problems is electrical range and FAA regulations.)\n\nOne of the best examples is the Boeing flying taxi, which completed its first successful flight last week. This is a VTOL (vertical take off and landing) vehicle with an operational range of 50 miles. That is well within a taxi travel envelope, particularly when you consider that it can fly in a straight line and avoid traffic or turns.
