| title | How To Tell If You’re Talking To a Bot |
| body | No surprises here, but the Internet is filled with fake bot accounts. Just to demonstrate how large and ingrained the problem really is, Twitter just deleted 2 million bot accounts. But how, exactly, are you supposed to know that you are interacting with a bot? Fortunately, researchers have come up with a few telltale signs. Clue #1: The user profile is incomplete This is pretty much a dead giveaway – if the user profile doesn’t contain a photo, it’s probably a bot. In other words, if someone just left a really mean tweet response to something that you posted, but there’s no profile photo for that user, then don’t worry too much – it was probably just some algorithm triggered to respond by a particular word or hashtag. Clue #2: The account posts the same link or content, over and over again Bots are not really all that smart. While some of them may indeed be created with a rudimentary form of machine intelligence, they are still essentially just simple algorithms, and their range of outcomes is relatively small. Thus, if you notice that one account posts the same content, the same link, or the same image, over and over again, it’s probably a bot and not a person. Clue #3: The account is too active While there are undeniably power Twitter users that post around-the-clock, bots take that definition to a whole new level. Thus, if you notice that an account has been posting non-stop, or that it posts content at all hours of the day and night, then that might be a bot that’s been programmed to do exactly that. Clue #4: The account occasionally posts nonsensical content Bots are really good at posting content that’s already been programmed into it – but have a much harder time responding to nuanced comments. Moreover, as you might expect, bots rarely catch all the nuances of jokes or humor. Thus, a bot might go completely off the rails based on a sarcastic comment you posted. Clue #5: The account is followed by lots of other bots If there’s one general rule of thumb to remember, it’s that bots attract bots. In other words, if you look at the social media network of a bot to see who it’s following, and who is following it, you’re almost certain to encounter many other bots. In part, that’s what makes bots so powerful – if you post something they don’t like, there is the potential for a whole swarm of bots to respond. That helps to create the sensation that the crowd is against you. No wonder it’s so common to hear about people deleting content after a negative backlash – it can be really disconcerting the first time this happens to you. Final Thoughts Even though Twitter has cleared out 2 million fake accounts, and Facebook has pledged to get rid of fake accounts, it’s almost a certainty that the practice will continue as long as the cost of doing so is close to zero, and as long as insecure social media followers feel that it makes sense to buy fake followers. But at least now you’ll now how to detect fake bots in your everyday social media interactions. |

| title | What Businesses And Marketers Need To Know About The European GDPR |
| body | It’s coming on May 25, and it has the potential to completely overturn everything that you do with social media marketing. “It”, of course, is the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which is a comprehensive new privacy law that applies to any company collecting data on EU residents or offering products and services to EU citizens. So, just because it has the word “European” in the title, don’t assume that it doesn’t apply to you. Why GDPR matters for social media For good reason, alarm bells are starting to sound in Silicon Valley. Most likely, you’ve already received a stream of messages from websites, social networks and web service providers, alerting you of changes to their privacy policy. Well, it’s not a coincidence. Big companies like Facebook and Google are perhaps most at risk from the GDPR, primarily due to the scale and scope of the information that they collect. But, if you think about it, every website and every social media platform collects a tremendous amount of data about users. And if any of those users happen to be EU residents, then you fall within the purview of the new regulation. Since the GDPR specifically mandates financial penalties for non-compliance, you are also introducing unwanted legal and regulatory risk into your operations if you simply put your head into the sand and ignore the GDPR. Use cases of the GPDR Still not convinced? Here’s just a simple example of how the GDPR will impact your social media marketing. If you are using affiliate links within your content, you will now need to alert users any time they are about to click on those links. That’s because affiliates collect data and information on users. The same goes for a lot of features that define the everyday web – everything from comment boxes to contact forms. If users want to sign up for your email newsletter, you’ll need to inform them as well of what type of information you are collecting, how you are using it, and with whom you are sharing it. And don’t forget about ads that you are running on your site – it’s almost inevitable that these advertisers are collecting plenty of valuable information about users. The GDPR says that users have a right to know what kind of information is being collected on them, and by whom. Opt-out vs. Opt-in Finally, the GDPR is going to change the way we think about privacy. Today’s paradigm is that companies have very weak privacy policies (yes, Facebook, we’re talking about you!) and users must “opt-in” to much stricter privacy options. But the paradigm being presented by the GDPR is that companies must start out with the very strictest privacy policies possible and then users must “opt-out” in order to relax those policies. And there’s one more way that the GDPR is going to change the privacy paradigm – it is going to make “consent” a necessary, but not sufficient, part of privacy protections offered by companies. That means that simply ticking a box when you sign up for a service is no longer going to give a company carte blanche to use data however it wants to. In fact, the GDPR also requires companies to provide reports on how their data is being used, if requested by users. So the takeaway here is clear: start re-thinking privacy now, before it’s too late. Do a quick audit of your online presence to gauge your overall exposure, and then start implementing a more beefed-up privacy policy that will protect users. Just because you’re not based in Europe doesn’t mean that you are not impacted. The GDPR is going to have worldwide implications. |

"body": "\n\nIt’s coming on May 25, and it has the potential to completely overturn everything that you do with social media marketing. “It”, of course, is the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which is a comprehensive new privacy law that applies to any company collecting data on EU residents or offering products and services to EU citizens. So, just because it has the word “European” in the title, don’t assume that it doesn’t apply to you.\n\nWhy GDPR matters for social media\n\nFor good reason, alarm bells are starting to sound in Silicon Valley. Most likely, you’ve already received a stream of messages from websites, social networks and web service providers, alerting you of changes to their privacy policy. Well, it’s not a coincidence. Big companies like Facebook and Google are perhaps most at risk from the GDPR, primarily due to the scale and scope of the information that they collect.\n\nBut, if you think about it, every website and every social media platform collects a tremendous amount of data about users. And if any of those users happen to be EU residents, then you fall within the purview of the new regulation. Since the GDPR specifically mandates financial penalties for non-compliance, you are also introducing unwanted legal and regulatory risk into your operations if you simply put your head into the sand and ignore the GDPR.\n\nUse cases of the GPDR\n\nStill not convinced? Here’s just a simple example of how the GDPR will impact your social media marketing. If you are using affiliate links within your content, you will now need to alert users any time they are about to click on those links. That’s because affiliates collect data and information on users. The same goes for a lot of features that define the everyday web – everything from comment boxes to contact forms.\n\nIf users want to sign up for your email newsletter, you’ll need to inform them as well of what type of information you are collecting, how you are using it, and with whom you are sharing it. | title | If Content Really Is King, Why All The Layoffs? |
| body | https://socialmediahq.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/pexels-photo-273222.jpeg At one time, it was thought that the publishing world’s embrace of social media and content marketing might save it from near-certain extinction. But, judging from the recent tsunami of layoffs washing over the new media world, it’s only natural to question whether content is really still king. If “content is king,” why then are we seeing so many layoffs in the publishing world? Just consider some of the big-name media properties that have recently announced layoffs: BuzzFeed Chicago Tribune Condé Nast ESPN Huffington Post Mashable Vice Aol/Yahoo Bloomberg A paradigm shift for content providers That would seem to suggest that we may be in the midst of a paradigm shift. For more than 20 years, “content is king” has been an accepted maxim in the Internet world. Most famously, Microsoft’s Bill Gates wrote a much-publicized essay back in 1996 in which he proclaimed content king. And that aphorism of “content is king” has been picked up by each successive wave of Internet marketers ever since, most notably by SEO marketers and content marketers. The key to success, they have always said, is more content and better content. Which bring us to where we are today – an Internet brimming over with content. Everywhere you look, people are generating content, whether it’s blog posts, YouTube videos, e-books, or social media posts. Brands are thinking like publishers, further adding to the content over-supply problem. Who, exactly, has time to read all this? The economics of content If you think of the content conundrum purely in economic terms, you can start to see why we’ve reached this point. This is a classic supply-demand problem. At one time, the supply of content was relatively scarce – you had a few TV networks, a few national newspapers, and some local media publications. With scarcity comes pricing power, which is why people were willing to plunk down $100 a year or more in magazine and newspaper subscriptions. But, along came the Internet, and the supply of content is no longer scarce. And, as long as content is not scarce, the value of content will decline. That’s just basic Economics 101. (It’s the same reason stores often discount items – they have too much inventory in stock, and need to offer huge discounts to move it all) The problem is that if we continue along the same trajectory, we may soon be reaching a point in which the value of content plummets all the way to zero. If content is worth zero, then it’s clear why media companies are going to keep cutting staff – they simply aren’t generating economic value. But what about Netflix? The plummeting value of content is certain concerning, but it’s not necessarily the case that all industries are seeing the same problems with content. Think of Netflix and other streaming video platforms like Hulu. They are literally spending billions of dollars each year on new, original content. The Netflix budget for new content in 2017 was reportedly $6 billion! So, obviously, Netflix thinks content is still king. As long as Netflix is cranking out blockbuster new shows like “Stranger Things,” it will continue to make money and invest in new content. If content isn’t king, what is? So what’s next? You could see other players in the Internet ecosystem begin to flex their muscles. For example, if “content” isn’t king, maybe “distribution” is the new king. That would suggest that the big Internet Service Providers – think Comcast, Verizon and Charter – might become the new kings of the Internet world. After all, don’t they control the most fundamental form of distribution today – the very wires that bring the Internet into your home or workplace? If you consider what the big cable companies have been doing with Net Neutrality recently, then this argument actually makes a lot of sense. These cable companies view themselves as the new feudal lords, with companies like Netflix as their lowly vassals, forced to pay tribute each month in order to use their Internet networks to make money. New business models on the way Another scenario, of course, is that all the New Media companies currently dealing with layoffs will finally wake up and come up with a new business model that actually makes sense – perhaps one that puts consumers and not advertisers in the middle of it. For example, there have been some suggestions that the traditional online advertising model might be supplanted with something radically new, such as a new business model based around decentralized networks and the blockchain. So keep an eye on the proliferating number of companies that are embracing the blockchain for their users. This could be more than just a clever PR move – it might actually be the start of something very new for the world of Internet content. It might even mean the return of the king. |

| title | What Is Blockchain Technology And How Could It Change Social Media? |
| body | Ever since the introduction of Bitcoin back in 2008, the buzz has been building over blockchain technology. Now, nearly a decade later, it’s clear that the blockchain could have some very unique consequences for social media. After all, the blockchain is essentially just a massively distributed network with unbreakable encryption. Some have called the blockchain a “new type of Internet,” so it makes sense that it could lead to a “new type of social network.” So what exactly is the blockchain? The easiest way to think about the blockchain is a massively distributed network that can’t be controlled by any entity and has no single point of failure. Every time there is a transaction or event in this network, every single node in the network is notified and updated. Each update is a “block” of data, creating a massively distributed ledger of data that is shared by every member of the network. To understand how this works, consider the world of financial services. In any financial transaction that you currently have with your bank, the transaction is between you and your bank. Your friends aren’t notified if you have more money in your account, and they aren’t notified when you withdraw money from your account. The only people who know are you and your bank (and any financial intermediaries along the way, like Visa or Mastercard or PayPal). That’s why hackers can break into your account and steal your money – it’s essentially just your word against your bank’s word about how much money should be in your account (scary but true). But all that changes with a cryptocurrency like Bitcoin. All of a sudden, you don’t need intermediaries because all transactions are person-to-person (P2P) transactions between the buyer and the seller. If you buy a pizza with Bitcoin, for example, the money flows from your account to the seller’s account without any annoying financial intermediaries taking a cut of the deal. And you also have the peace of mind of knowing that hackers cannot hack into your account and drain all the Bitcoin from it – to do so, they would have to have the computing power to change the information stored in every single node of the network (i.e. millions of computers distributed around the world). Effectively, hackers would have to write over every single “block” of data with new data – something that’s technically impossible with today’s computing resources. Applications for social media While there have been no direct applications of blockchain technology for social media yet, it’s easy to conceive of a few potential scenarios where it could be used to radically change the experience on a social network like Facebook: A free and fair election hosted by Facebook – There have already been some limited examples of elections being held using blockchain technology to record votes. Since the blockchain is incorruptible and easily verified, there would be no questions about vote miscounts, stolen voter identities or “hacked” elections. Any person with a Facebook account could vote, his or her identity could be identified, and there would not be any conspiracy theories about illegal voting in certain states or hacked elections by rogue nations. A new and improved sharing economy brought to you by Facebook – Think about the two biggest players in the sharing economy – Uber and Airbnb. They are essentially intermediaries, taking a cut of every transaction that you make. But that’s completely antithetical to the blockchain, where all transactions are P2P. So why not an even better sharing economy, in which two people with Facebook accounts could easily engage in a transaction without the need for Uber or Airbnb? Money would flow directly from one account to another account, without the need for these intermediaries. A new crowdsourcing model created by Facebook – Right now, if you want to crowdfund, you need some kind of third-party platform like Kickstarter. But why couldn’t Facebook create a new way of raising money using the blockchain? There have already been limited examples of blockchain-powered venture capital funds, in which investors within a network “vote” on investing or not. If there are enough votes, the deal gets funded, and the money flows directly to the entity that needs it. In this new funding model, you wouldn’t need to be an accredited investor with a million-dollar net worth – you could just be the average Joe with a bunch of Bitcoin to invest. Verified social media news that can’t be “fake” – Given the current debate over “fake news,” there might be an opportunity for social networks to use the blockchain to prevent any unverified or non-fact checked articles from ever appearing in the world’s “ledger” of news. People within a “news network” would essentially vote on whether “news blocks” should be added to the system or not. And there would be no possible way to delete this news or alter it in any way. Once something is “news,” it’s news forever. Right now, the one social network that seems to be most capable of any of these innovations would appear to be Facebook. The company has scale, money and a forward-thinking mindset that has the company investing in cutting-edge fields like virtual reality and artificial intelligence. So why not the blockchain? Facebook. |

| title | How Clemson Tigers Using Social Media to Connect With Fans and Recruits |
| body | https://socialmediahq.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/6120000581_d8f343d5fe_b-e1488918192332.jpg Starting in 2013, Clemson began building out its social media presence. By 2017, it had arguably the most impressive social media presence in the entire country – buoyed in large part by the university’s national title run in 2015-2016 and eventual national college football championship in January 2017. Clemson now has the No. 1 most-followed college football team account in the nation, but how did it get there? #1: Focus on stories and moments According to Clemson’s social media team, the key is to tell stories around the university, the team and the athletes. For college football, the idea is to capture everything surrounding game day – not just the action on the field, but also all the student and alumni passion. Thus, it’s just as likely that on social media you’ll see images of players warming up for a big game as images of students at tailgates or in the stands dressed in orange. The idea is to show exactly what it’s like to be a Clemson Tiger. #2: Go for strong visuals and lots of short video clips The Clemson social media team doesn’t take inspiration from journalists or sports beat writers. Instead, they encourage each other to think like a Nike copywriter (lots of powerful emotion) or to act like an advertising agency. Thus, many social media posts are intentionally short. Videos are short and punchy – usually no more than 6-7 seconds apiece – a legacy of Clemson’s early embrace of the Vine social media platform. #3: Understand what your audience wants The emphasis at Clemson is on strong visuals and hashtags that students and recruits can identify with. For example, the Clemson social media team readily admits that they are influenced by the world of rap music. Often, videos are scored to popular rap songs. Or visuals reference new albums that have been released recently. In terms of hashtags, Clemson has developed some that are now exclusive to the university – such as #ClemsonCulture and #OrangeBritches. Other hashtags reference famous inspirational quotes from the football team’s head coach, Dabo Swinney – such as #ALLIN or #BYOG (Bring Your Own Guts). The goal here, says the Clemson social media team, is to “speak recruit.” In other words, the social media feeds are intended to capture the same tone, nuance and idiosyncrasies of how Clemson recruits might talk. As a result, there is an undeniable bond between athlete and university – they feel like Clemson is a place where they will feel at home. #4: Be true to the brand Ultimately, the Clemson “brand” revolves around being a college football powerhouse. It helps, of course, that the university won a national championship – and did so in spectacular fashion, against an all-time foe. It helps that the university had a Heisman Trophy candidate and a social media-friendly coach who often talks like a motivational speaker. The goal of the social media team is to transform all this raw material in a way that is consistent with the overall brand. Clemson is not just about being a winner – it’s also about having a unique culture that other universities simply can’t emulate. There’s a lot here that any brand can learn from – especially the need to connect the social media presence to the overall brand. And, just as importantly, it’s important to understand that there is a very different approach that a journalist and an ad agency would take to covering a brand. In the case of Clemson, they made the right choice – they now have an inspirational, effective social media presence that unites not only current students but also future recruits. |

"title": "How Clemson Tigers Using Social Media to Connect With Fans and Recruits",
"body": "https://socialmediahq.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/6120000581_d8f343d5fe_b-e1488918192332.jpg\n\nStarting in 2013, Clemson began building out its social media presence. By 2017, it had arguably the most impressive social media presence in the entire country – buoyed in large part by the university’s national title run in 2015-2016 and eventual national college football championship in January 2017. Clemson now has the No. 1 most-followed college football team account in the nation, but how did it get there?\n\n#1: Focus on stories and moments\nAccording to Clemson’s social media team, the key is to tell stories around the university, the team and the athletes. For college football, the idea is to capture everything surrounding game day – not just the action on the field, but also all the student and alumni passion. Thus, it’s just as likely that on social media you’ll see images of players warming up for a big game as images of students at tailgates or in the stands dressed in orange. The idea is to show exactly what it’s like to be a Clemson Tiger.\n\n#2: Go for strong visuals and lots of short video clips\nThe Clemson social media team doesn’t take inspiration from journalists or sports beat writers. Instead, they encourage each other to think like a Nike copywriter (lots of powerful emotion) or to act like an advertising agency. Thus, many social media posts are intentionally short. Videos are short and punchy – usually no more than 6-7 seconds apiece – a legacy of Clemson’s early embrace of the Vine social media platform.\n\n#3: Understand what your audience wants\nThe emphasis at Clemson is on strong visuals and hashtags that students and recruits can identify with. For example, the Clemson social media team readily admits that they are influenced by the world of rap music. Often, videos are scored to popular rap songs. Or visuals reference new albums that have been released recently.\n\nIn terms of hashtags, Clemson has developed some that are now exclusive to the university – such as #ClemsonCulture and #OrangeBritches. Other hashtags reference famous inspirational quotes from the football team’s head coach, Dabo Swinney – such as #ALLIN or #BYOG (Bring Your Own Guts).\n\nThe goal here, says the Clemson social media team, is to “speak recruit.” In other words, the social media feeds are intended to capture the same tone, nuance and idiosyncrasies of how Clemson recruits might talk. As a result, there is an undeniable bond between athlete and university – they feel like Clemson is a place where they will feel at home.\n\n#4: Be true to the brand\nUltimately, the Clemson “brand” revolves around being a college football powerhouse. It helps, of course, that the university won a national championship – and did so in spectacular fashion, against an all-time foe. It helps that the university had a Heisman Trophy candidate and a social media-friendly coach who often talks like a motivational speaker.\n\nThe goal of the social media team is to transform all this raw material in a way that is consistent with the overall brand. Clemson is not just about being a winner – it’s also about having a unique culture that other universities simply can’t emulate.\n\nThere’s a lot here that any brand can learn from – especially the need to connect the social media presence to the overall brand. And, just as importantly, it’s important to understand that there is a very different approach that a journalist and an ad agency would take to covering a brand. In the case of Clemson, they made the right choice – they now have an inspirational, effective social media presence that unites not only current students but also future recruits.",

| title | 5 Fearless Predictions For Social Media In 2018 |
| body | To paraphrase science fiction writer William Gibson, the future of social media is here, it’s just not evenly distributed. We all know that video is taking over the web, and that new technologies like AI and VR are starting to make their presence felt. But what, exactly, can we expect for social media in 2018? We’re going to see a massive wave of consolidation Expect some big M&A deals to rock the world of digital media in 2018. And some of the combinations might not make complete sense. Just as Jeff Bezos scooped up the struggling Washington Post in 2013 in a unique deal combining West Coast tech with East Coast media, will 2018 be the year that Silicon Valley companies start sniffing around for potential M&A deals for digital media companies trading at all-time low valuations? Imagine what would happen, for example, if Facebook tried to buy the New York Times. And everybody knows the big cable companies like Comcast are rumored to be looking for deals, inspired by the Verizon-Yahoo deal. Virtual reality and augmented reality finally become “a thing” We’ve heard so much advance hype about virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), but 2018 might finally be the year that everything comes together. Remember – Facebook is going to be rolling out the Oculus GO $199 VR headsets next year, and Apple is getting very active in the AR space. Everyone is looking for a way to bring AR to the mobile phone and other digital devices. The big buzzwords could become “immersive tech” or “AR eyewear.” Text makes a grand comeback You thought video was taking over the web and text was dead? Silly you. In reality, it looks like text is making a comeback in the form of innovative new mobile app offerings. In short, text is moving from the desktop to the mobile device. One app, for example, that people are talking about is the storytelling app Yarn, which enables readers to experience stories as a series of text messages shared between characters. Text could prove easier to monetize than video – and thus, might once again prove appealing for the big social media giants. Facebook tries to go toe-to-toe with Netflix In many ways, 2017 became the year that everyone tried to get into the streaming video game. And it looks like 2018 is only going to see an intensification of those efforts, as Facebook looks for a way to create a massive, globally distributed video streaming platform that can rival anything Netflix (or Hulu or Amazon) can come up with. And here’s the real wildcard – it looks like Apple is planning to get into the streaming video game as well with original content programming. Artificial intelligence becomes the new “must-have” for content marketers In the world of content marketing, you want to ensure that you have as many “hits” as possible, and one way of doing that is by using data and predictive analytics. So you can see why artificial intelligence (AI) is so promising – it could offer content marketers and social media gurus the ability to maximize views, engagement and interactions. If just a handful of these trends hit big over the next 12 months, we could be looking at another exciting cycle of growth for social media. |

| title | Snapchat Is Redesigning Its App. But Is It Enough? |
| body | Remember when Snapchat was the hottest new social media darling? That now seems like a very long time ago. The company might have gone public in a splashy IPO in March 2017, but it’s been all downhill since then. The latest sign that Snapchat could be in trouble is a bold new plan to redesign the app. Snapchat’s disappointing financial results According to Snap CEO Evan Spiegel, the upcoming Snapchat app redesign is at least a tacit admission that financial results have been less than stellar over the past three quarters. Ad revenue is down 60 percent on a year-over-year basis. The company had to absorb a $40 million charge-off for unsold augmented reality Spectacles. And most distressingly, the number of daily average users of Snapchat is on the downswing. Snap, as might be expected, is trying to put a brave new face on things, saying that daily average users are down due to seasonality. (On Wall Street, that’s the same as a failing fashion retailer blaming a huge plunge in holiday sales on “unseasonably warm weather”.) Moreover, Snap points out that 70 percent of social media users between the age of 13 and 34 use Snapchat regularly, suggesting that it’s still the social media platform of choice for millennials. How will Snapchat really change? Ok, but why the redesign, then? The core problem seems to be that many people over the age of 34 have never quite figured out why they should be using it – especially when Facebook and Instagram have now added many of the same features (such as Stories) that once made Snapchat unique among all social media platforms. Snapchat has declined to say how its app would actually change, only to comment that it will become “easier to use” and more relevant for “those older than 34.” Oh, and it will be easier to use for “people outside the U.S. and Western Europe.” The pros and cons of a Snapchat app redesign You can view this in one of two ways. If you’re a positive-thinking guy or gal, you’ll probably spin this as Snapchat getting access to a whole new audience of users. That’s good for the daily average user count, and it’s also good for advertising revenue. However, if you’re a skeptic, the only possible way to interpret this piece of news is that Snapchat is trying to become more like Facebook, and not the other way around. In short, Snapchat has realized that it is going to have to look and act a lot more like Facebook if it is going to thrive and prosper. Which means, of course, that part of what made Snapchat so unique and innovative in the first place may be going by the wayside. We all know how that story ends. That’s not to say that the price of Snapchat stock is headed to zero any time soon. But it is worrisome that the price of Snap has now dropped below the IPO offering price of $17, and shows no signs of stopping its freefall anytime soon. So this new app redesign is really an effort to put a floor under Snap’s current stock price. That might just buy Snapchat the time it needs to figure out how it’s going to keep up with Facebook in 2018. |

"title": "Snapchat Is Redesigning Its App. But Is It Enough?",
"body": "\n\nRemember when Snapchat was the hottest new social media darling? That now seems like a very long time ago. The company might have gone public in a splashy IPO in March 2017, but it’s been all downhill since then. The latest sign that Snapchat could be in trouble is a bold new plan to redesign the app.\n\nSnapchat’s disappointing financial results\n\nAccording to Snap CEO Evan Spiegel, the upcoming Snapchat app redesign is at least a tacit admission that financial results have been less than stellar over the past three quarters. Ad revenue is down 60 percent on a year-over-year basis. The company had to absorb a $40 million charge-off for unsold augmented reality Spectacles. And most distressingly, the number of daily average users of Snapchat is on the downswing.\n\nSnap, as might be expected, is trying to put a brave new face on things, saying that daily average users are down due to seasonality. (On Wall Street, that’s the same as a failing fashion retailer blaming a huge plunge in holiday sales on “unseasonably warm weather”.) Moreover, Snap points out that 70 percent of social media users between the age of 13 and 34 use Snapchat regularly, suggesting that it’s still the social media platform of choice for millennials.\n\nHow will Snapchat really change?\n\nOk, but why the redesign, then? The core problem seems to be that many people over the age of 34 have never quite figured out why they should be using it – especially when Facebook and Instagram have now added many of the same features (such as Stories) that once made Snapchat unique among all social media platforms.\n\nSnapchat has declined to say how its app would actually change, only to comment that it will become “easier to use” and more relevant for “those older than 34.” Oh, and it will be easier to use for “people outside the U.S. and Western Europe.”\n\nThe pros and cons of a Snapchat app redesign\n\nYou can view this in one of two ways. If you’re a positive-thinking guy or gal, you’ll probably spin this as Snapchat getting access to a whole new audience of users. That’s good for the daily average user count, and it’s also good for advertising revenue.\n\nHowever, if you’re a skeptic, the only possible way to interpret this piece of news is that Snapchat is trying to become more like Facebook, and not the other way around. In short, Snapchat has realized that it is going to have to look and act a lot more like Facebook if it is going to thrive and prosper. Which means, of course, that part of what made Snapchat so unique and innovative in the first place may be going by the wayside. We all know how that story ends.\n\nThat’s not to say that the price of Snapchat stock is headed to zero any time soon. But it is worrisome that the price of Snap has now dropped below the IPO offering price of $17, and shows no signs of stopping its freefall anytime soon. So this new app redesign is really an effort to put a floor under Snap’s current stock price. That might just buy Snapchat the time it needs to figure out how it’s going to keep up with Facebook in 2018.",

| title | Augmented Reality Is Starting to Change The Way We View Social Media |
| body | Over the past year, there’s been a lot of chatter of how “mixed reality” – a sort of blanket term encompassing both augmented reality and virtual reality – has the chance to fundamentally change the world of social media. While virtual reality (VR) certainly has the backing of social media giant Facebook, it has also been a lot more difficult to figure out than augmented reality. The new eMarketer study on AR As a result, augmented reality (AR) is now gaining the upper hand, and is starting to change the way we view social media (literally). At the end of May, research firm eMarketer released a report suggesting that 40 million Americans will use AR at least once every month this year. This is a 30 percent increase from the previous year. By 2019, says eMarketer, 1 in 5 Internet users will be experimenting with AR, including 54.4 million Americans. If you’re like most people, you’re probably a bit skeptical about those numbers. Somebody’s been drinking the AR Kool-Aid. 40 million Americans are using AR right now? Really? That number seems fantastically high. Snapchat as the market leader in AR According to eMarketer, Snapchat is the leading reason why AR use has taken off. In April, for example, Snapchat unveiled its new “World Lenses,” which enable you to add special effects to the video messages that you send others. The first World Lenses include things like rainbows, flowers and a giant “OMG.” Here’s how it works: let’s say you make a quick video message at a picnic. You could add in all kinds of AR elements to make the video message really pop. For example, you could add a giant rainbow over your picnic table. Then, as you pan out to show the field around you, you could add in some beautiful AR flowers. Finally, you could add a giant “OMG” image at the end of the message, when you’re holding your pet. According to Snapchat, these lenses are different from stickers or filters because they adjust and move according to the action in the video message. You can think of them as special effects. Here comes Instagram and Facebook Not to be outdone, Instagram recently added augmented reality face filters. The first AR filters include crowns and effects that make a person look like a rabbit or koala. There’s also one that adds spinning math equations around your head. And Facebook, too, has been outlining its views for augmented reality and social media. Recently, Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg called the smartphone camera the “world’s first ubiquitous augmented reality platform.” As Zuckerberg sees it, augmented reality will be a great way to merge the physical and digital worlds. AR as a new form of advertising? Presumably, AR will also open up all kinds of new advertising opportunities. Why advertise on a physical, real-world billboard when you can create an AR billboard that appears every time your camera views a specific destination? Facebook must be salivating at the prospect of selling AR ads to potential advertisers! Going forward, expect to see more innovation in the AR space. For now, Snapchat is the market leader. The only question, of course, is whether people will want a specific device to view AR images (similar to Snapchat’s Spectacles or a VR headset), or whether they will want it all to happen on their smartphone camera. Either way, 40 million Americans can’t be wrong. It’s all leading to a future where AR is built right into our digital devices and can be used easily anytime we communicate with others. |
