We know that there is evidence that <a href=\"http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-22424188\">militant opposition groups have used chemical weapons</a> in Syria previously, yet this is never highlighted by much of the media in their reports of this latest incident. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>\n<p><strong>Russian MOD Previously Warned of Chemical Weapons False Flag Attack</strong> &nbsp;&nbsp;</p>\n<p>Last month, the Russian Defense Ministry warned that the US was training militants in Syria to <a href=\"https://www.rt.com/news/421589-us-preparing-syria-provocations-airstrikes/\">stage a chemical weapons false flag attack</a> as a basis for the US to launch airstrikes against the Syrian government: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>\n<p><em>“We have reliable information at our disposal that US instructors have trained a number of militant groups in the vicinity of the town of At-Tanf, to stage provocations involving chemical warfare agents</em> <em>in southern Syria.</em> They are preparing a series of chemical munitions explosions. From the rise of Donald Trump in the US, to the vote for Brexit in the UK, these political events can be interpreted as being a deathblow to the internationalist forces who have been building a globally interdependent world order.</strong>&nbsp;</p>\n<p>In particular, Trump’s nationalist rhetoric (summed up by his slogan: “Make America Great Again”) and the return to a form of protectionism (which includes the imposition of <a href=\"http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-43337951\">tariffs</a> on steel and aluminium imports) can be seen as a rejection of the globalist position, and a return to nationalism. This line of argument states that the return of nationalism and protectionism are events completely unforeseen by these internationalist forces, and therefore, this nationalist wave serves to derail their agenda for a new global order.</p>\n<p>The reality however is more complex and nuanced. Exactly who Trump represents and ultimately serves is a bone of contention for many still, yet regardless of this, it is clear that these internationalist forces expected spurts of nationalism and protectionism to arise as part of the transitional nature of this century.</p>\n<p><strong>Rothkopf Predicted Nationalist “Spasms” a Decade Ago</strong></p>\n<p>In a book first published in 2008 (although quotes sighted below are from an edition published in 2009 – see notes) titled Superclass: How the Rich Ruined our World, David Rothkopf lifts the lid on the workings of the emerging global superclass, with some of his predictions surprisingly prescient considering the political ‘earthquakes’ that have taken place in recent years.</p>\n<p><a href=\"https://foreignpolicy.com/author/david-rothkopf/\">Rothkopf</a> is a visiting professor at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs, a visiting scholar at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, a <a href=\"https://www.cfr.org/membership-roster-q-u\">member</a> of the internationalist think tank the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), the former editor of the FP (Foreign Policy) Group, a former <a href=\"http://carnegieendowment.org/experts/188\">Managing Director</a> of Kissinger Associates – the advisory firm founded by former U.S. Secretary of State, Henry A. Kissinger, in addition to serving as the Deputy Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade Policy in the Clinton administration. Needless to say, Rothkopf has been, and still is, an extremely connected individual, who has a unique vantage point when it comes to analysing global affairs and predicting future political trends.</p>\n<p>In his concluding remarks to the book, Rothkopf begins by documenting the transition that has occurred (and continues to occur), as power shifts from national actors to global rivals:</p>\n<p>“In past eras, most elites were national and their support could dictate the future of princes and prime ministers, the fate of coalitions within their borders, the rise and fall of individuals and initiatives that had a domestic power base. But the center of gravity of elites has shifted. Today, the most powerful elites are global citizens tied more to international finance than national politics… If the richest and most powerful individuals in the world are now predominantly globally oriented, globally dependent, globally active, then an important shift has taken place in the world’s balance of power – away from national governments and away from national interests narrowly defined… Globalization is not just some kind of fad or geopolitical flavor of the month. In every one of the clusters we have examined, it becomes clear that the most powerful are the most global.”<a href=\"http://www.theanalystreport.net/2018/04/04/superclass-author-and-kissinger-protege-rothkopf-predicted-the-rise-of-trump-a-decade-ago/#_edn1\">[1]</a></p>\n<p>Rothkopf continues, predicting that as this transitional process continues, there is a high probability of a return to “protectionism” and “reactionary nationalism,” but ultimately, these moves should be interpreted as “transitional spasms” or “growing pains” as the new global order emerges:</p>\n<p>“National elites remain. But for the most part, on most issues, they are trumped by the scale, resources, networks, and power of their more globally oriented rivals. Tensions remain between the two, and the national elites have traditional and cultural ballast to help them hold their ground. But the handwriting is on the wall. Protectionism or reactionary nationalism may reassert itself, perhaps with devastating consequences, perhaps for decades to come. But it is likely that these reactions will be seen as transitional spasms, growing pains, as people struggle to come to grips with the redefinition of core ideas like sovereignty, community, identity, local, and foreign. To a large extent it is up to the global power elites themselves to determine how long and how destructive those spasms will be.”<a href=\"http://www.theanalystreport.net/2018/04/04/superclass-author-and-kissinger-protege-rothkopf-predicted-the-rise-of-trump-a-decade-ago/#_edn2\">[2]</a></p>\n<p><strong>Trump: A Faux Champion of the People?</strong></p>\n<p>Considering Rothkopf’s remarks, it is imperative that we ask the following question: who does Trump actually serve? Months before Trump was elected President, I documented the <a href=\"https://www.counterpunch.org/2016/08/19/trumps-connections-to-wall-street-soros-blackwater-and-the-cfr/\">establishment links</a> Trump clearly had, despite his anti-establishment rhetoric. Is it at least plausible that Trump’s presidency is designed to serve as somewhat of a relief valve for those ‘old’ ideas of sovereignty and nationalism, with the elite providing the people with a faux champion in order to release pressure and ease the impact of the great transition from a national to a global system?</p>\n<p>Let’s not forget, Trump has stated himself that he is “<a href=\"http://www.ronpaullibertyreport.com/archives/president-trump-now-declares-im-a-nationalist-and-a-globalist\">a nationalist and a globalist</a>.” Trump has also frequently <a href=\"https://www.washingtonpost.com/video/politics/trump-meets-with-kissinger/2017/10/10/5ecc6bfa-add7-11e7-9b93-b97043e57a22_video.html?utm_term=.ce94fe221ea4\">meet with Kissinger</a> during his campaign and presidency, an individual who can be considered a key member of the global superclass. Trump’s time in office may in fact serve as a form of a bridge, designed to ease the tectonic transition by appealing to those who have been left behind by the process of globalization, with this spurt of nationalism also helpful in mobilising the US population for yet more wars in the Middle East and other theatres of war, especially considering that the hawkish neoconservative, John Bolton, is set to become Trump’s new National Security Advisor.</p>\n<p>Many of Trump’s nationalist policies that have been implemented during his short time in office can be seen as moves designed to appease some of his supporters who believed in his rhetoric and felt ignored by the political system, as opposed to being a reflection of the ideological purity of Trump himself. It should be remembered that Trump has hinted that some of his major nationalist moves may only be temporary. Speaking from the World Economic Forum in Davos at the end of January for instance, Trump said he would be willing to consider <a href=\"https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2018/01/26/business/trump-says-consider-rejoining-tpp-terms-improved/#.WsN0JUmWzIU\">rejoining the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP)</a> free trade deal if the terms improved. Additionally, in the same month, Trump signalled that he would be <a href=\"https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2018/jan/28/donald-trump-says-he-might-sign-back-up-to-a-revamped-paris-accord\">willing to sign</a> the US back up to the Paris climate agreement if the treaty is modified.&nbsp;</p>\n<p>A year or so from now, Trump may in fact sign the US back into these internationalist treaties, being the first to claim that his expertise in dealmaking meant that he turned bad deals into good deals for the American people.We may never know the gospel truth about Trump, yet the explanation above should at least be considered.&nbsp;</p>\n<p>What is not debatable however, is the fact that the world is, and has been for decades, hurling through a major transition, towards a more globally integrated system.In closing, I will leave you with a quote from a report published by the <a href=\"https://www.clubofrome.org/about-us/\">Club of Rome</a> in 1991, which was titled The First Global Revolution:</p>\n<p>“The topic of research from recent Club of Rome meetings has been ‘The Great Transition.’ We are convinced that we are in the early stages of the formation of a new type of world society, which will be as different from today’s as was that of the world ushered in by the Industrial Revolution from the society of the long agrarian period that preceded it. The initial, but by no means only motor force of this change has been the emergence of a cluster of advanced technologies, especially those made possible by microelectronics and the new discoveries of molecular biology. It is no coincidence that the US has increased its military footprint on the continent in line with Africa becoming increasingly important for China, both strategically and economically. &nbsp;</p>\n<p>Despite the US being active in Africa for years now, US military presence is only going to increase in the months and years to come. The 2011 <a href=\"http://www.africom.mil/media-room/article/8089/coalition-launches-odyssey-dawn-to-implement-libya\">war</a> in Libya was only the tip of the iceberg as far as military engagement is concerned. &nbsp;</p>\n<p>In fact, the hawkish US Senator, Lindsay Graham, said last October that Africa was going to increasingly become a <a href=\"https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-10-20/senator-graham-says-terrorism-war-expanding-citing-africa-clash\">theatre</a> in the war on terrorism, with the Senator warning the American public that the US military will conduct “more actions in Africa.”&nbsp;</p>\n<p>Although the Middle East will continue to be a region plagued by warfare (especially if the US is reckless enough to launch a full-scale attack on Iran), there will be somewhat of a shift in focus from the Middle East to Africa.&nbsp;</p>\n<p><strong>A Decade of AFRICOM</strong>&nbsp;</p>\n<p>Since 9/11, Africa has gone from being regarded by the US as a region that is of relatively little strategic value to Washington, to being of such importance that in 2007, President George W. As </em>Hanson wrote in <a href=\"https://www.cfr.org/backgrounder/us-africa-command-africom\">her 2007 article</a>:&nbsp;</p>\n<p><em>“Many of the experts who heralded the command’s creation seem to validate African concerns. Writing in World Defense Review, J. Peter Pham, director of the Nelson Institute for International and Public Affairs, calls AFRICOM’s creation ‘long overdue’ in light of U.S. dependence on Africa’s oil, its concern over radical Islamist groups targeting the region, and the continent’s identity as ‘an arena for intense diplomatic competition with other states with global ambitions, like China.’ Others note that AFRICOM will help the United States secure vital sea lanes.” </em>&nbsp;</p>\n<p><strong>“Terrorist Image-Making” to Justify AFRICOM</strong>&nbsp;</p>\n<p>The threat of terrorism is once again being used by the US and wider Western war machine to justify a major military footprint in Africa. This issue was addressed by Horace G. Campbell, a Professor of African American Studies and Political Science at Syracuse University, in a 2008 article, titled: ‘<a href=\"https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/18186870802321293\">Remilitarisation of African societies: Analysis of the planning behind proposed US Africa Command</a>.’&nbsp;</p>\n<p>In the article, Campbell (2008: 13 &amp; 30) further details the fact that many leading neoconservatives were instrumental in creating AFRICOM, before moving on to argue that the threat of terrorism has often been exaggerated, and even fabricated, in order to justify a US military presence on the continent. Africa became the target of what Campbell (2008: 7) calls “terrorist image-making,” designed to create the perception that Africa was a major source of global instability and terrorism. This perception management campaign included subcontracting scholars within African studies departments to write books and editorials which placed significant emphasis on the threat of terrorism from Africa.&nbsp;</p>\n<p><strong>The Current State of Affairs </strong>&nbsp;</p>\n<p>Just this year so far, US forces have <a href=\"http://www.africom.mil/media-room/press-releases\">conducted numerous airstrikes in Somalia</a> under the pretext of targeting al-Shabaab militants, with the number of covert, classified missions on the continent no doubt much higher. For example, there was indications that AFRICOM was involved in engineering a <a href=\"https://www.strategic-culture.org/news/2015/09/21/did-africom-engineer-military-coup-in-burkina-faso.html\">military coup</a> attempt in Burkina Faso back in 2015, designed to protect US military bases in the country. &nbsp;</p>\n<p>The situation in Africa is another demonstration of how the nonsensical ‘War of Terror’ is a perfect justification for perpetual warfare. The US can essentially conduct military operations in any region of the world, and as long as they issue a press release stating that it is in the name of countering terrorism or fighting extremism, there is virtually no outrage or legal ramifications for their actions.
