We’ve realized these are often overlooked aspects of the crypto world by those who are fairly new and should be included in a well rounded education of all things decentralized.\n\n  Security is one of the reasons more people don’t get into crypto.       "body": "By Alejandro Jimenez \n\n\nPlattsburgh bans mining operations\n\nPlattsburgh, NY, has one of the lowest electricity rates in the United States. While the US average is 10.27 cents/kWh and the New York state average is 14.47 cents/kWh, Plattsburgh residents enjoy a rate of 4.36 cents/kWh due to the city’s proximity to a hydroelectric dam on the St. Lawrence River. The rate is even more attractive for industrial operations- 2.61 cents/kWh.\n\nWhile this rate was meant to bring industries and factories to the city, according to Mayor Colin Read, it has also inadvertently attracted cryptocurrency miners to the area. The spike in energy usage by these miners has caused electricity bills around the city to rise.\n\n“In our case, Plattsburgh has a set amount of cheap electricity and if it goes above that, everyone in the city has to pay more,” David Bowman, Founder and CEO of Plattsburgh BTC, a mining company based in Plattsburgh, wrote to Motherboard. As a city, Plattsburgh has an allotment of 104 megawatts of electricity at the cheaper rates. If the city goes over this limit, it needs to buy more electricity on the open market. This additional cost is spread among the residents, leading to higher electricity bills. The fact that mining operations use so much electricity has made them an easy target for lawmakers to pass restrictions. The largest bitcoin mining operation in Plattsburgh, run by Coinmint from Puerto Rico, used about 10% of Plattsburgh’s allotment in January and February.\n\nMayor Read proposed a moratorium on new bitcoin and crytptocurrency mining operations on March 1. The city council unanimously voted to impose the 18-month moratorium on the evening of March 15. The moratorium is meant to give the city council time to develop a solution for the energy problem exacerbated by mining operations. Council members are optimistic that the ban won’t last the full 18 months, however. Councilor Patrick McFarlin, on the length of time for the ban, says, \"Our public doesn't deserve 18 months, our public doesn't deserve waiting even six months for us to get our act together and manage this, but something needs to be done right now and right now 18 months is what we've got. But clearly the law says we as a council can act, and if we do act, the moratorium won't last anywhere near 18 months.\"\n\nOver the coming months, city officials will be working alongside residents and the mining operations to develop an equitable solution. Mayor Read has suggested possibly having the miners pay for overages of the power allotment or charging miners a higher kWh rate.\n“It would never cost the Plattsburgh citizens any more money to let more miners come in here because the miners are willing to pay for those overages when it's super cold,” Tom Pillsworth, a Plattsburgh local and partner at Plattsburgh BTC, told Motherboard. “The miners are more than willing to pay.”",

The world of cryptocurrency is so vast that it’s really hard to know where to start. That’s why the team put together de/Central.  Our motto is “your roadmap for a decentralized world” and that’s exactly what we strive to provide.   We unequivocally feel that decentralization and cryptocurrency are the wave of the future.  With the number of coins and the vast applications possible through blockchain technology, it’s hard to argue with that sentiment.  It’s a worldwide movement and paradigm shift.  Paradigm shifts are often hard to accept and even harder to navigate. If nothing else we want to give a starting point.  We’re on the precipice of something that can revolutionize finance and even the playing field for “regular” people.  The shift is already in full swing.  We want our readers to be able to maximize their benefit from it.\n\nThink about the internet in its infancy(mid-late 90s).  Blockchain tech and the attached cryptocurrencies are in a similar phase currently.  I had a conversation with a few team members and initially I wanted to help drive adoption of the crypto ecosystem.  That goal morphed a bit as the first issue came together.  We realized it’s not about making crypto mainstream. As the technology evolves that will happen anyway.  It’s social evolution and social evolution can’t be stopped(maybe moderately slowed).  What we’re here to do is help people understand the changes and how it affects them as it becomes mainstream.  With this goal in mind we can help crypto become the mutually beneficial system that it was originally intended to be by the cyberpunks who pioneered it.  People can’t effectively benefit off of something they don’t understand.  I’m not saying you have to know exactly how a node works or know offhand how many MB are in each block of every token.  How many of us know exactly how the internet works on more than just a surface level?  Most everyone knows how to use it though.  The more you know about it the more effective you are at using it however.  de/Central is here to facilitate that knowledge.   \n\nWe’ve broken de/Central into 5 sections to help our readers navigate the cryptosphere.  News\" looks at the newest developments in blockchain technology as well as the acceptance of it. \"Financial\" examines the cryptocurrencies and market trends that allow us all to make educated decisions and profit from the exchanges. \"Legal\" focuses on the regulation of blockchain tech. \"Opportunities\" gives user-friendly and easy to understand breakdowns of how regular people can use cryptocurrency to their advantage. Finally, security focuses on how to stay safe while on your crypto journey.  This is a new industry to most and we won’t sugarcoat it; there’s still plenty of scams out there. I can't say I've read all of the books on the subject(only Nietzsche) and these guys always throw new philosophers at me. Notice I said abusers not addicts.  I suspect most of them know this that's why you always see them abusing substances but never addicted to them.  When you know the purpose you can't become psychologically addicted.  When you're in full control psychologically the physical addiction isn't allowed to manifest because on a subconscious level you're controlling the chemical process that would cause physical addiction.  \n\nThinking about this all I think I'm a different kind of nihilist.  A hybrid of the two if you will.  I don't have a name for it but I'm that type of person that almost nothing bothers me.  I call this \"nihilistic peace\".  I know nothing matters except for the meaning I assign it.  I know these meanings are chemical reactions in my brain but I can direct the neuropathways to  continue this meaning or discontinue it(habit built through repetition).  I guess you can think of it as self-programming.  The more you practice the easier it is to do. In a word: choice.  Life has meaning because of these choices.  Life in the general or overall sense  has meaning because everyone in the world makes these same type choices even if they aren't aware of it. So collectively these IS meaning but only that we've collectively assigned.  Most aren't aware so I never judge anyone too harshly. I find it fairly easy to see why they made the choices they did at the most basic level.  There's not much weight of responsibility on me to cause anxiety because I'm the one who determined the basis of the responsibility 1,5, or 1000 choices ago.  It's all on me.  And when you realise that your free to make the world as cool or as shitty as you want.",
