Eaper was not a particularly unfriendly fellow though his habit of dress might make him appear, at the very least, aptly solemn and unyielding. However, Dear Reader, I beg to differ with such a hasty appraisal based on the limitations of fashion alone, to which Mr Eaper is quite untrained, and offer my humblest opinion as to whether Gurrim’s boney jawline and piercing eyes, as black as liquid coal tar, do more to convince thee of the degree of cordiality one might expect upon unexpectedly meeting him one night cloaked in fog as thick as cat spit… but I digress.</p>\n<p>If it be true, ‘the clothes make the man,’ well then, Mr Eaper is indeed, in need of a total makeover which would, no doubt, ally the initial suspicions and apprehension of his soon to be lifeless charges!</p>\n<p>Eaper was, in fact, overdue some new threads befitting one entrusted with the duties and legendary status of Death’s number one errand boy. He was, in truth, growing long in the tooth and needed an update to his habardastardly wardrobe more befitting a character of his disquieting distinguishments.</p>\n<p>The first item of apparel to go must be, nay, would have to be those brown leather clodhoppers. Everyone, except Gurrim R. Eaper, knew that brown and black worn together was not a fashionably compatible color palette but, he was so particularly attached to this atrociously cloddish pair of boots which followed and emitted a foreboding refrain and rhythmically rapacious ‘gluck-da-dunk, gluck-da-dunk, gluck-da-dunk’ as he sauntered his way down a deserted street in the deadliest hour of night that appearances meant nothing to him.</p>\n<p>Above all else, he quite adored the aural ambience the ghastly boots lent to the scene of soul-napping and was loath to give them up.</p>\n<p>My Dear Reader, as your entrusted narrator I feel it my literary duty to disclose to you the thinly disguised ‘Mr Eaper’ a bit foolish in his attachment to less pertinent, even cliched details regarding the collection of souls, of which he’s been doing for a millennia without complaint I might add. However, it seems he’s become bored of late with the humdrummity of it all and somewhat contrary whilst performing the duty of his primary errand; thus, he’s devised a few minor concessions with which to entertain and console himself through the tedium of his long held position. One such eccentricity being those ‘gawd-awful’ pair of brown boots he wears, a new appearance in this century; one such frivolous and undignified concession which must be dealt with post haste.</p>\n<p>Indeed, to be stalked by Death’s wing man wearing a pair of worn out, square-toed, clippity-cloppety cowboy boots, brown, no less, would be more than a commoner might be asked to bear at the end of an already long and lackluster existence. But then, Death is not above imparting one final insult over the bow of a sinking ship before sending its poor fools deep into the slumber of the longest night, especially should it befit them and their deeds.</p>\n<p>Do accept my humble apologies once again Dear Reader for I have digressed for a second time and fear I may be abusing your generous attentions. I shall get to the point of our business here today.</p>\n<p>I have been sent forward with the honorable and necessary task of posting a bounty on a particular item of clothing owned and worn incessantly and to Death’s disgrace by one Mr Gurrim R. Eaper.</p>\n<p>Here ye all!</p>\n<p>Whosoever shall bring me the boots of Gurrim R. Eaper shall be granted immediate absolution without further examination or deliberation of all sins committed by him while occupying his corporeal form, further, the brave soul, if ye survive Mr Eaper’s wrath, shall be rewarded with one Cheat Pass* to be played on Death in this lifetime or held for the next.</p>\n<p>*All rules and restrictions apply.       "body": "<html>\n<p><img src=\"https://foodonfifth.files.wordpress.com/2011/08/img_0134.jpg\" width=\"2192\" height=\"2736\"/></p>\n<h3>Looks aren’t everything</h3>\n<p>My mom and dad’s neighbors, Gracie and Paul, have lived next door for as long as I can remember. Literally, I don’t ever remember a time when they were not there. They were already here when we moved in to the house where my parents still live when I was three years old.</p>\n<p>They are stalwart, modest, kind and generous people and they have been truly good neighbors to my folks. Recently, my mama, who is 81, has taken to referring to them as ‘angels’.</p>\n<p>Paul, 91, a survivor of several strokes and now in the terminal stages of liver cancer, has a green thumb. That is to say, he is a bona fide backyard gardener with the crops to prove it. I’m careful to put this in present context even though none of what he typically nurtured and grew from his backyard over the years, which included everything from onions to apples, and of course, his ‘other-worldly’ peaches harvested from a single, well nurtured tree, are coming on this year. None were planted and the peach tree has been gone a year, at least.</p>\n<p>In my eyes, he is still a gardener all the same, despite his weakened physical state. This year, he stubbornly insisted on planting what will likely be his last harvest: tomatoes. His wife and sons helped him to plant eight tomato plants in total of various varieties in the historically bountiful garden spot. I’ve watched them ripen with great anticipation as weeks ago he told me during a brief over-the-fence chat he hoped to have enough to “share around”.</p>\n<p>The other night Gracie knocked on the back door. When I opened it she held up a plastic shopping bag of tomatoes from Paul’s garden saying, “I brought some tomatoes.” As I propped the door open and invited her inside the deliciously familiar scent of fresh tomatoes wafted up my nose.</p>\n<p>Have you ever had real homegrown tomatoes from Ohio? They are much like taking a bite out of the sun, exploding with juicy, sweet-tart tanginess and melting in your mouth like a midwestern summer sunset as it glides below the horizon leaving the sky the color of ripened tomatoes of red, yellow and orange.</p>\n<p>I’m pretty sure Eve could’ve just as easily been a ‘tomato temptress’ with one of these homegrown babies in her hands while in the Garden of Eden if it weren’t for the apple tree in the story! Furthermore, including ‘vine-ripened’ when you’re describing the kind of tomato that comes out of your neighbor’s or your own backyard is redundant, which is why I’m always distrustful of the packaged tomatoes in the supermarket that include the phrase, ‘vine-ripened’ which is pretty much a shriveled, green wirey twig stringing all the fruit together like Christmas lights. It’s an over-sell that’s pretty obvious when you’ve grown up eating the real thing.</p>\n<p>This leads me to appearances</p>\n<p>Food and people come in all sorts of various packages, we all recognize this, however, sometimes, both can be tricky when ferreting out their true natures if you only rely on appearances. For example, many processed foods harbor a questionable intention towards our overall health, much like a trojan horse, by including ingredients which have been genetically modified and recklessly unleashed into the food chain.</p>\n<p>Did you know you should be able to smell most fruits and vegetables when they’re ready to eat?</p>\n<p>Well, you can if they are fresh and have been grown in a healthy, natural environment, not in a lab or hothouse. Unlike people, we prefer not to smell one another but, what if we could actually smell another’s intention toward us or toward the collective community as a whole? Dogs smell one another and it seems they derive a lot of information from a few sniffs which may even include the other dog’s intentions, what they had to eat last and if they might be up for a little romp and tussle.</p>\n<p>What if we could smell another human being in this way?</p>\n<p>I wonder what Donald Trump would smell like to my dog? Does myopic selfishness have a scent? Something like rotten tomatoes, perhaps? On the other hand, I’m curious too, what generosity and kindness might smell like? A Bounce ™ dryer sheet, frankincense and myrrh, sun ripened tomatoes?</p>\n<p>Don’t be fooled by appearances</p>\n<p>My mom and dad’s neighbors are simple people who I’m certain have not been without their challenges and heartaches in life but they’ve mostly kept those to themselves. They’re not flashy or flamboyant, they’ve lived in the same modest house on the same street for nearly seventy years. By all appearances one might pass them by on the street with nary a second glance, even dismiss them as no longer being relevant to the world at large if they ever were at all but, I say such an assessment by appearances alone would be a mistake. Their lives made a difference and continue to do so right here on the street where they live and this is the lesson I take with me regarding tomatoes and appearances, don’t be fooled. Sunlight tightens her pupils and she squints hard enough to hasten the crows return. They plant their feet firmly above her cheek bones while she looks on.</p>\n<p>Her unguarded stare turns to a glare when it comes to rest on the jostling knot of school children moving along the sidewalk. She watches as they shuffle gregariously off the bus a few doors from her front stoop; poking and prodding each other towards their own houses until the little mob is gone.</p>\n<p>Mildred hated kids. Recalling her own childhood, she knew all too well what vicious, name-calling little vipers they could be.</p>\n<p>“Mou-sie Mil-lie, Mou-sie Mil-lie,” they’d taunted and teased, “the fat little mouse who gobbled all the cheese.”</p>\n<p>Every weekday the bus’ air breaks hiss then squeal to a stop at precisely 3:10 pm. Her rhythm temporarily broken, she relaxes her body’s automated ritual of stuffing envelopes with whatever pulpy propaganda her employer was mailing this week. It’s break time, the second of two built into her daily routine.</p>\n<p>Mildred never pays attention to the garbage she folds and stuffs, she couldn’t care less what goes into the crisp white business envelopes before she slides them into the cardboard box resting on the table next to her.</p>\n<p>Pluck. Fold. Stuff. Seal. Stack. Repeat.</p>\n<p>It was sheer economy of movement, efficiency not unlike poetry in motion, if she did say so herself. Oh, and she would say so if anyone was ever there to witness her in action. Mildred has been efficiently, if not obsessively stuffing envelopes in her front room by the large frame picture window for twenty years. Same chair. Same table. Same lamp arranged in the same exacting configuration so that her movements had become as effortless as an automated assembly line.</p>\n<p>Over the years she’d been forced to make some adjustments to accommodate progress, especially with the advent of self-sealing envelopes, which she gratefully accepted and thought of as the only true improvement in the whole operation but nobody asked her.</p>\n<p>The afternoon mail comes through the metal slot with a clatter and falls to the floor. Mildred thumbs through it on her break. One colorful envelope stood out and beckons her to open it.</p>\n<p>Congratulations! You’ve won a free fall cleaning giveaway from the new housecleaning service, The Mary Maid! No purchase necessary. Call today to schedule your first cleaning.</p>\n<p>Mildred considers the offer then picks up the phone before she could change her mind.The team came as appointed, a whirling dervish of maids clad in yellow and blue polo shirts, none with the name of ‘Mary’.</p>\n<p>The troupe carefully cleaned and dusted, moving things about and back under Mildred’s watchful eye. Unknown to anyone present, including Mildred, when they’d finished and closed the front door of her home her working table and chair by the large picture window were slightly off the mark from their usual positions.</p>\n<p>The following morning Mildred prepares herself to begin work. The seemingly insignificant discrepancy in the position of the table, the lamp and the chair in relationship to one another escapes Mildred as she surveys her freshly cleaned ‘work station’; however, once she sits down and begins the rote process of plucking, folding, stuffing, sealing, and stacking — the repetitious movements multiplied by the slight error in her normal body and furniture positions increases her discomfort and the margin for error exponentially.</p>\n<p>Something’s definitely off — but Mildred, once launched into her slightly obsessive-compulsive collection of micro-movements, could not stop herself before tragedy strikes.</p>\n<p>“OUCH!”</p>\n<p>Sucking a thin breath in through pursed lips, Mildred looks at her left hand and the thin bloody line sketched across the second knuckle of her index finger. To her painful surprise she’d just sustained her first ever paper cut. She knew the risks of envelope stuffing but had become smug about them over the years since her disciplined fingers had always been able to avoid the careless parry with the sharp edge of the paper broadsword.</p>\n<p>Mildred scrutinizes her finger. She’ll need a bandaid, the thin line of blood was pooling at one end and looked like an exclamation mark felled in battle.</p>\n<p>Torn, she sits stationary while she considers what had just happened and what she should do next.</p>\n<p>Mildred was flummoxed. A record of zero mishaps now broken was no record at all. Something shifts inside her.</p>\n<p>The tiny cut persistently stings and pulls at her attention while she sits in her chair looking out of the large picture window. It was only 9:28 am.</p>\n<p>In a flash of inspiration Mildred flips over one of the flyers destined to be stuffed, takes a pen from the table and writes in big block letters: “I QUIT!”</p>\n<p>She carefully folds it in thirds, stuffs it in an envelope and addresses it to her employer.</p>\n<p>When she turns back to the envelope after scrounging around for a postage stamp she notices a smudge of blood in the blank space where her return address should be.
