NEM’in açılımı New Economy Movement  yani Türkçesi ile ifade edecek olursak Yeni Ekonomi Hareketi’dir. Başlangıçta NXT  coin’in bir forku olarak düşünülen NEM,  Bitcoin Talk forumu kullanıcılarından UtopianFuture adlı kullanıcı tarafından başlatılmıştır. Ancak daha sonra kodu sıfırdan geliştirmek için fork fikrinden vazgeçilmiştir ve tüm ağ için sıfırdan kod yazılarak NEM blockchain yaratılmıştır. NEM geliştiricileri Bitcoini’in yaratıcısı Nakamoto Satoshi gibi gerçek adları ile ortaya çıkmamışlardır. Kendi isimlerini kullanmak yerine takma isimler kullanmayı tercih etmişlerdir.\nNEM ilk olarak Java üzerinde yazılmıştır. Şu anda da C++ versiyonu çalışma aşamasındadır. NEM, blockchain teknolojisine geniş dağıtım modeli hedefini belirleyerek birçok yeni özellik sunmuştur. Devrim niteliğinde bir dijital platform olarak gösterilen NEM kendine özgü yenilikçi bir algoritma geliştirmiştir. Piyasadaki mevcut kripto paralarından çok daha iyi bir sistem sunan Nem Coini farklı kılan en önemli şey yenilikçi algoritmasıdır. Gerçekten de oldukça önemli sorunların başında işlemlerin hızı gelmektedir. Buradaki can alıcı nokta sistemin, ağın veya sürecin iş yükünün karşılanması için kaynakların esnetilerek kullanılmasıdır. Çok kısa bir süre içinde sistemin binler, hatta milyarlarca isteğe karşı kalması durumunda bu istekleri karşılayabilmesi durumu yüksek ölçeklenebilirliktir.\nÇatallanma (Fork):  Bir blok zincirinin iki adet potansiyel zincir oluşturacak şekilde bölünmesidir. Zincirler o ana kadar olan geçmişi birlikte paylaşırlar ancak sonradan yollarına bağımsız olarak devam ederler. Bazı çatallanmalar sert çatallanma olarak adlandırılır. Bunlar düğümler tarafından uygulanan blok zincirin kurallarını sınırlayan protokol güncellemeleridir. Bir blok boyutunun 1MB’den 8 MB’ye çıkarılmasının tartışıldığı toplantıda karar alınamayışı yüzünden Bitcoin Cash adlı kripto paranın ortaya çıkması buna örnektir. Herhangi bir merkezi otorite olmaksızın, işlemler zaman damgasıyla bloklar halinde listelenir. Doğrulanan veri bloku adeta bir zincir gibi birbirine eklenir. Her blok şifreli olarak bir önceki ve bir sonraki bloka bağlı olduğundan geriye dönük değiştirilemez. Merkezi olmayan ve herhangi bir otoriteye bağlı olmayan açık blockchain ağlarında madencilik havuzunun %51’ini ele geçiren kişi ya da kurum teorik olarak onay mekanizmasını ele geçirmiş olur. Geçmiş işlemleri değiştiremez ancak gelecekteki işlemleri onaylama ya da reddetme gücüne erişir. Daha hacimsiz işlemlerle bu tip saldırılar mümkündür.\nAğ güvenliği (Network Security): Blockchain ağlarına saldırı olması mümkündür. Bu nedenle ağın saldırılara dayanıklı inşa edilmesi önem kazanmaktadır. Saldırı yöntemlerinden biri mining yaptırmak olarak bilinen zararsız gibi görünen reklamlar aracılığı ile yapılan zararlı yazılım saldırılarıdır. Saldırgan ağ üzerinde karar mekanizmasını ele geçirecek miktarda coini başka bilgisayarları kullanarak ürettirebilir ve kendine yollanmasını sağlayabilir. Hatta kullanıcılar tarayıcılarını kapatsalar bile arka planda işlemleri devam ettirebilirler. Diğer bir yöntem saldırganların kendi aralarında iletişim kurduğuna inanılan taraflar arasına sızması, paylaşılan bilgileri kullanmasıdır.
