These individuals possess exceptional intellect and introspection, all while nurturing a profound desire to instigate substantial social and personal transformation. However, for many of us, the struggle to lead authentically persists as we combat psychological patterns that incessantly undermine our self-worth.\n\nIn this mindset, it frequently appears as though our achievements are merely a product of chance or our ability to deceive others into perceiving us as more capable than we genuinely believe ourselves to be.\n\nAs an impostor, will we ever attain a state where we genuinely feel competent?\n\nIt is highly probable that we will, but only if we actively engage in introspection and strive to alter these detrimental thought patterns — it would appear. I often pondered why this was the case, but I persevered through the fear and pursued my passion regardless, even though I felt like an absolute failure. This week, the term ‘Impostor Syndrome’ has resurfaced on multiple occasions, prompting me to reflect on this peculiar phenomenon that erodes our self-assurance and how we can potentially conquer it.\n\nI have devised a simple analogy involving a Greek deity named Flaunta, which serves as a metaphorical tool to emphasize my point. Despite lacking the apparent confidence needed to attract admirers, she observed from afar what beautiful women did to gain confidence, even though she was a beautiful woman herself. Despite facing backlash from jealous women, over time, Flaunta persisted in her quest. Her confident and beautiful cousin, Aphrodite, eventually passed down the baton of confidence to Flaunta who in turn, became the Goddess of confidence, even though she wasn’t confident in the true meaning of the word. Why? Because she consistently studied and admired her goal, even if she did this from an internal standpoint. She also got it handed to her …\n\nA combination of factors to consider\n\nThis story is relatable to many people who struggle with Impostor Syndrome and fail to recognize their unique skills and abilities. In Flaunta’s case, this delayed her goal, however, her persistence granted her something much bigger but it was ultimately her connection with her cousin that sealed the deal.\n\nObviously, we mere mortals do not have divine power, so I have pulled together some general tips from my own experience, but also from some basic research into the topic. Unlike Flaunta, no one has the power to crown your confidence in yourself, but you.\n\nConfidence and self-assurance are not achieved overnight, but rather through a combination of factors. If you have exhausted all ways to improve in your field of expertise and still feel inadequate, you may be experiencing Impostor syndrome.\n\nI have looked (briefly) into what the causes are of Impostor Syndrome.       "body": "For all the movers and shakers, leaders, philanthropists and storytellers dedicated to making a social impact (And those hovering somewhere in between) — This one is for you.\n\nPhilanthropy — It’s easy for you to say!\n\nLiterally and figuratively speaking, I feel confident enough to convey that the above statement is based on a false premise. The word itself is cumbersome and in the last few weeks of using this word repeatedly, I thank my lucky stars for good secure teeth.\n\nIt’s not an easy task to critically analyse its meaning either. For decades I have been thinking of how philanthropic philosophies (another mouthful of cumbersomeness) have been shaped in our societies, what this means, how it is delivered and by whom.\n\nDoes it really matter?\n\nThat may appear to offer a very obvious answer, but that really does depend on what your perception of philanthropy is.\n\nI remember a few years back when I wrote a slapstick murder mystery, themed around Greek Mythology. (This is relevant to the discussion, so do not give up on me just yet) One of the characters was Prometheus — a champion for the mortals. He stole fire from his fellow Gods and presented it to the mortals to aid the development of mankind and humanity.\n\n\n![Prometheus, Creator of Mankind - Vector Image (1).png](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmdmZ5BH72otDs3jwLEjFSVwcQi119zTLpAiGdgUSArjzD/Prometheus,%20Creator%20of%20Mankind%20-%20Vector%20Image%20(1).png)\n\n\nImage Credit —By Wannapik\n\nZeus was furious with Prometheus and his betrayal and had him bound to a rock, where an eagle would be sent every day to eat his liver. And because that wasn’t enough for Zeus, he would make Prometheus live the same event over and over again.\n\nA bit harsh in my humble opinion.\n\nAnyway, the point I am making here is that this is a simple metaphor in relation to the timeline of philanthropy.\n\nOver the centuries we have seen philanthropy develop from a more reactive action to a more combined reactive/proactive action. Not only do we not need to rely on the wealth of individuals and church-funded hospitals, but we now have such resources as an NHS, technology, Gift Aid infrastructure of grant-making and community organisations (Examples)\n\nIn campaigns such as women’s rights movements, we have been more able to create more leadership over the centuries, in more diverse grassroots activities. We have learned that strong leadership with a strong moral philosophy is key to change in policy making.\n\nSo, let’s put this into some kind of context with the what, where, who and how of philanthropy by using Prometheus and his ‘giving’ as a metaphor.\n\nIndividual Goal: Prometheus wanted to help others less privileged than himself.\n\nSocial Capital: His network had a common purpose of creating luxury for Olympus ONLY.\n\nInherent Value: Is inherent values were to help those less fortunate\n\nResources: These were stripped away from him until he could do no more\n\nOutcome — Prometheus can not make any progress in his quest\n\nNow, let’s relate this to an activist seeking philanthropic support. I will call this person Fred.\n\nIndividual Goal: Fred wants to create an enterprise that keeps people warm\n\nSocial Capital: Part of his Social Capital has a strong common person of the above — They have a team of peer support but no infrastructure support\n\nInherent Value: Is inherent values are to help those less fortunate\n\nResources: Their resources are limited\n\nOutcome: Fred cannot make any progress in their quest\n\nThis is just a generic example, but you can see that if you break down each area, these four areas need to be met to reach a breakthrough in reaching a higher sustainable philanthropic goal.\n\nIt may seem a little odd to use a myth to describe what is happening here, but this is storytelling which is a useful tool to add to our inherent morals and values, especially in younger generations. I’m not suggesting you use this as a robust example, but you can apply this kind of fable to any cultural diversities.\n\nThis is where I can conclude in my thoughts that we have come a long way in philanthropy but we still need to support strong leaders on a grass roots level, and increase their social capital because this is where the emotive side of philanthropy develops. Inherent values need to be recognised so we understand why wealthy people and organisations may not get the right funding to the right people at the right time. Finally, we need to be more clever about how we deliver services and funding to be more collaborative.\n\nThe process of grant giving is still too rigid and time-consuming, and we need to act more quickly when the need is there. If you are a donor, grant-making organisation, governmental body or community development organisation, PLEASE continue to link up and work out how this can be done more effectively together, working as a collaboration with the leaders who are changing the world. I would love to hear any tips or feedback on what is currently popular on Steemit!\n\nI used to be a regular blogger on Steemit, but it has been a while since I last visited the platform. Steemit was where I rediscovered my passion for writing and it led me on a path of creative storytelling and publishing.\n\nI took a break to explore different paths in life, but now I thought I would pop back in and see how things are in the Steemit world. - I miss the community, if I'm honest.
