However, in China, “Warcraft” was a huge success. So, why did this film succeed in China but not in America? The movie was a “bomb” at the American box office but a huge success in China.</p>\n<p>1. Chinese people are watching films increasingly- at a rate of 50% more per year.</p>\n<p>2. It’s becoming cheaper for Chinese filmgoers if they buy their tickets online and go to the theater.</p>\n<p>So, how are Chinese filmgoers buying their tickets online?</p>\n<p>The process of “ 电影票团购 (diànyǐngpiào tuángòu)”, or the group-purchasing of movie tickets + the city’s name that you are in (北京 Beijing 、上海 Shanghai, etc.)” through Google or Baidu has become popular. It may save you a lot of money if you’re going to the movies in China.</p>\n<p>However, you don’t have to “search” for these discounts!</p>\n<p>As with everything in China today, there are apps to help you. These are:</p>\n<ul>\n  <li>美团 (Měituán )\t</li>\n  <li>百度糯米 (Bǎidù nuòmǐ)</li>\n  <li>大众点评 (Dàzhòng diǎnpíng )</li>\n</ul>\n<p>No one likes to go to the movies alone and group purchasing makes it cheap and easy for everyone. In addition to the tickets, you can also buy food and drinks through these apps. One other aspect of life that is unique in China is the things you can find when you’re out shopping. China is today the manufacturing capital of the world and home to countless products to buy and use. Each year, some new products are sold right next to traditional products. As an American student in China, I enjoy shopping for things both old and new.</p>\n<p>As winter is now here, I’ve noticed a few things that buyers flock here in China. One is old and one is new. They both help keep us warm and content in the cold winter.</p>\n<p><strong>1. I will first introduce the “new” product to you:</strong></p>\n<p>暖手袋 (nuǎn shǒudài) = warm handbags</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSxGgbCu9xPct2Rc2jzcP4jLYGy5RyQrJBSrukQERKPM3SMs8O0\" width=\"225\" height=\"225\"/></p>\n<p>Gaining in popularity this year are “暖手袋 (nuǎn shǒudài)”, or warm handbags, also called electric warm bags. The handbags get their warmth with electricity that heats the water inside the bag. These convenient devices are perfect for people to use in the house, office or outside. When I get cold or stomachache, I use my “暖手袋 (nuǎn shǒudài)” to warm my hands and stomach to feel better. They’re cheap and can come in handy when you’re in a place without heaters. Since you’re using water and electricity, but sure to read over the safety precautions before use. You can buy your own “暖手袋 (nuǎn shǒudài)” on Chinese e-commerce sites such as Alibaba or Tencent. I am sending a few home to my family in the USA for Christmas!</p>\n<p><strong>Where did you buy this warm handbag?</strong></p>\n<p><strong>2. Many might answer: with a birthday cake. In China, there is an ancient tradition that is still in practice today. Instead of having a cake, many might be enjoying birthday noodles. Birthday noodles or 寿面 (shòumiàn) are not just ordinary noodles. They literally mean “long-life noodles” and it is believed that the longer the noodles, the bigger the wish for long life. These noodles also have to be eaten in a special way. It is said the whole noodle should be eaten—bit by bit—without breaking it into pieces. You wouldn’t want to cut your life short!</p>\n<p>寿面 (shòumiàn) – noodles eaten on one’s birthday; birthday noodles</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://gss3.bdstatic.com/7Po3dSag_xI4khGkpoWK1HF6hhy/baike/s%3D220/sign=e6a2ee73b80e7bec27da04e31f2fb9fa/810a19d8bc3eb135ec594dc7a61ea8d3fd1f4434.jpg\" width=\"220\" height=\"165\"/></p>\n<p>Often on someone’s birthday, their family will make them some homemade noodles or they can go to a restaurant, which will make the noodles specially for their birthday. These noodles have a unique story as to why they are eaten on a birthday, aside from wishing a person long life.</p>\n<p>This tradition dates all the way back to the Martial Emperor from the Han Dynasty. One day he was discussing lifespan with his ministers. They discussed that if the grove between a person’s nose and upper lip is 1 cm long, then that person can live to 100 years old. Minister Dong Fangshuo sitting next to the emperor heard this and started to laugh. All the other ministers were baffled, and blamed him for having no courtesy for the emperor.</p>\n<p>The Martial Emperor asked him what he was laughing about. Dong Fangshuo explained, “I am not laughing at your Majesty, but at the state of Peng Zu. If a 100 year old person’s grove above the lip is 1 cm, then Peng Zu’s lip is 8 cm since he is 800 years old. So, his face is really long.” When everyone heard this, they started to laugh as well. When speaking of longevity, it seemed silly to wish for a long face to have a long life. But, they could use a more flexible way to express one’s wish for long life.</p>\n<p>Therefore, the saying “脸长就是面长 (liǎn chǎng jiù shì miàn chǎng)” came out. This is a play on words as both “脸 (liǎn)” and “面 (miàn)” mean “face,” and “面 (miàn)” also means noodles. This phrase can be read as “a long face is long noodles.” This way people can use long noodles to bless a long life.</p>\n<p>Afterwards, the tradition to eat Longevity Noodles on one’s birthday came about. If you study a few hours every day you’re going to learn a lot faster than someone who only spends one day a week.</p>\n<p>For speaking, the key is to LISTEN and REPEAT. Over and over and over. Every time you learn something new, repeat it to yourself over and over. Work it into a sentence you think would be useful to you in the future. Say that over and over. To learn how to speak there’s no other way than to just do it.</p>\n<p>Now, as far as time, if you study on your own it may take upwards of 5 years to reach a certain level of fluency, while the entire language-school system in China can be completed in 2 years (full-immersion).</p>\n<p>One big problem with self-study is you’re more prone to miss things. Whether it’s never really knowing if you’re pronouncing the tones correctly (VERY important that you learn these right the first time or else you’ll spend the rest of your life making up for it), or spending more time actually gathering information to study then studying it. It’s a tricky and long process compared to <a href=\"https://www.echineselearning.com/free-trial/?ecl=refEEEEE&amp;aff=stm17\">taking a class</a> or getting a tutor.</p>\n<p>There are a few things you can do to help yourself and speed up your learning process.</p>\n<p><strong>1. </strong>Watch a lot of dramas and listen to a lot of music. The best way to learn to speak is to listen to other people speaking. That’s how kids learn. It’s how you learned your native language. Dramas are more natural than sample-sentence-audio-recordings, which means if you copy how drama characters speak your Chinese will be more natural sounding as well. Plus you’ll learn a lot of slang that way too.</p>\n<p><strong>2.</strong> Check out online private tutor programs. Most of them offer one-to-one tutoring with native Chinese teachers and you just can’t beat that kind of personalized learning experience.</p>\n<p><strong>3.</strong> Practice using the four Mandarin tones. Mandarin Chinese is a tonal language, It is absolutely essential to master the four tones if you want to pronounce Mandarin Chinese correctly.</p>\n<p><strong>4. </strong>Memorize simple vocabulary. No matter what language you are learning, the more words you have at your disposal, the sooner you will become fluent.</p>\n<p><strong>5.</strong> Learn some basic conversational phrases. Once you have a basic grasp of vocabulary and pronunciation, you can learn basic conversational phrases which are used in everyday Chinese speech.</p>\n<p><strong>6. </strong>Advance your language skills. Learn basic Chinese grammar and practice your Chinese listening, reading and speaking skills. One of the best ways to improve your new language skills is to practice speaking with a native speaker. They will easily be able to correct any grammar or pronunciation mistakes you make and can introduce you to more informal or colloquial forms of speech that you won’t find in a textbook.</p>\n<p>With the right attitude and right plan, you can learn Chinese efficiently and effectively. Learning alone is a challenge, so having a teacher as well is highly recommended. You can do this though! Many have done it before, so rest assured.</p>\n</html>",
