titleWhy it took me two years to finish Fallout 4
bodySpoilers lie ahead for Fallout 3, 4 and New Vegas so reader beware. ![fallout-4-large-1021x580.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmVuaY5dMdHKD7rJYQTm4VEtijWEHTBxDQHk4fo6kyZxw3/fallout-4-large-1021x580.jpg) Let’s start with the all important caveats before criticise something people love. I enjoy the Fallout series, I’ve played through all three 3d games and put way more of my life into Fallout Shelter than I care to admit. I’m a little too young to have played the old geometric games but if I ever find the time I’m not opposed to going back to them. I actually really enjoyed Fallout 4, which is part of the issue. I also don't really enjoy playing role playing games outside of my own character, so certain options in game seem unconscionable to me. Lastly I do have commitment issues so tend to be uncomfortable doing stuff in games with permanent decisions until i know for sure what outcome I want, as a small child I wouldn't pick a fossil on mt moon in Pokémon until I had spoken with friends to make sure we didn't get the same one, and that habit dies hard. # The world is too interesting, seriously With Fallout 4, I wanted to do anything but the main quest. The Commonwealth is fascinating, with some great characters within it. I could spend all day reading terminal entries (modern action RPGs have taught me other people's emails are fascinating). There are some truly endearing sidequests, becoming the silver shroud, giving Travis some confidence and rescuing a silly posh man who tried to teach Shakespeare to supermutants to name a few. While this is a commendable achievement in game design, a huge chunk of the writing and set design went into the main quest, and to get a player to go through with it the game needs to encourage the player to pursue it. There’s a number of ways games tend to go about this. # Three ways to encourage players to follow the story The first, and most straightforward way to funnel a player towards the main quest is to require it. A strong example of this is the Mass Effect series. In Mass Effect you get some autonomy, the player often gets a couple of main quests to do at once and a variety of side quests to go with it. How Mass Effect restricts the player though is by only giving planets on your map when it is time to go there. Once the player gets the Normandy, they can't go to Virmire until they’ve been and completed the quests on Feros and Noveria. While this can make the game linear, it keeps the focus coming back to the main quest as it becomes the only thing left to do relatively quickly. The second way to push the player towards the main quest is the hide content behind it. A classic example of this is how in Guild Wars Prophecies, for a player to change their second profession they need to complete Augury Rock, the 18th of 25 main missions, and to get the maximum armour the player must complete the next quest (The Dragon’s Lair) so they can buy them in Droknar’s Forge. To some extent Fallout 4 uses this technique, some items only become available (either in shops or as loot) after certain quests are completed, but it's not clear in game, and the value of the unlocked items is questionable. The third, and most satisfying, way to push a player into the main quest is to create a sense of urgency. This can be done two ways, either mechanically or through writing. In Fallout: New Vegas, the player’s actions change how different factions respond to the player. If a player has a bad reputation with a faction they encounter, they will be attacked. This encourages the player to resolve the conflicts between factions, which form the main quests. Fallout 4 actually does this through writing for the first half of the game. When the player first goes looking for their son, they believe he is still a child, vulnerable to whoever has taken him. Even if it doesn't make a difference in the game, it feels important to find him fast, that if the player waits too long it might be too late. This gives the game a tempo, the bits and pieces of information discovered on the way keep the player interested and on the verge of a breakthrough. # Does the Commonwealth really need saving? Where Fallout 4 starts to lose its urgency is once the player finds their son. At that point the decisions the player makes are no longer strictly personal and serve only to advance one of the four factions interests. At this point, the player picks a faction to back and does their bidding from there to the end of the game. And none of the factions interests really seem to matter, which makes it hard to find motivation. Once the player enters the institute and finds Shaun, the next question is what is actually wrong with the Commonwealth, as fixing that should be the main thrust of the rest of the game. In Fallout 3 the player finds their dad, then they fix the water purifier. Given the player has probably given themselves radiation poisoning at least fourteen times drinking dirty toilet water, that is an obvious in universe issue to be solved. In Fallout 4, the answer isn’t that simple. There’s the obvious living in a post apocalyptic wasteland thing which is a problem. I personally don’t think I’d sleep that well knowing feral ghouls and deathclaws were peeking through the window. Also I drink so much tap water I’d probably die instantly. The Institute profess to solve this problem, but their plan seems to be to live like mole people, do some good sciencing and let everyone above ground suffer because why not? There’s a big running theme throughout the game of people snatching. Shaun gets nicked, Piper dedicates a whole newspaper to people getting nicked, there’s a science man in a house that the institute really want to nick but he locked himself in a cupboard. Problem is the only two the player witnesses in the game are the two I just mentioned, and it doesn’t feel like a consistent issue. Are the Institute still nicking people? Do I need to care about them? The Minutemen just want to mind their own business free from raider and synth raids, which is nice, but defending a lot of small towns isn’t really some grand ending to a game (that’s not the Minutemen ending but it should be because really the Minutemen destroying the Institute when their general is also the director of the Institute seems like something that doesn’t need to happen). The final issue gets a bit/a lot racist, which is the Brotherhood of Steel (who seem much nastier than the nice group of lads I met in Fallout 3) who think that all synths, ghouls and super mutants need to be destroyed, no ifs no buts. It’s just not that much of a problem to me, yeah some super mutants are a bit nasty, and I don’t really like to decorate with so much human flesh, but genocide seems like a bad solution. So there’s no obviously important thing the player has to do next. There’s one last thing too. The more of the main quest you do, the less of the game the player has access to. There’s a point where the player loses access to other factions. By the end, two of three factions are totally destroyed, and for what? The final act of the game feel very much like a box ticking exercise, with a couple of dialogue payoffs, but nothing that meaningful is achieved because nothing that important is there to be done. Destroying the Institute should be a huge moment, but feels far less important than destroying Megaton in Fallout 3, because there’s basically nothing to go back for anyway. To finish, I think this uncovers an important point. Stories in games need to fit the medium. The conflict between the three big factions has some interesting plot points, and if they were to be viewed from the outside would be great, but a first person roleplaying game needs to be more personal. The actions of the player character have to feel somewhat organic. The most natural response in Fallout 4 after finding your son is to spend the next couple of days in the Dugout Inn and then wondering why your headache is so bad.

Lastly I do have commitment issues so tend to be uncomfortable doing stuff in games with permanent decisions until i know for sure what outcome I want, as a small child I wouldn't pick a fossil on mt moon in Pokémon until I had spoken with friends to make sure we didn't get the same one, and that habit dies hard.\n\n# The world is too interesting, seriously\n\nWith Fallout 4, I wanted to do anything but the main quest. There’s a number of ways games tend to go about this.\n\n# Three ways to encourage players to follow the story\n\nThe first, and most straightforward way to funnel a player towards the main quest is to require it. \n\nThe second way to push the player towards the main quest is the hide content behind it. To some extent Fallout 4 uses this technique, some items only become available (either in shops or as loot) after certain quests are completed, but it's not clear in game, and the value of the unlocked items is questionable.\n\nThe third, and most satisfying, way to push a player into the main quest is to create a sense of urgency. This gives the game a tempo, the bits and pieces of information discovered on the way keep the player interested and on the verge of a breakthrough.\n\n# Does the Commonwealth really need saving?\n\nWhere Fallout 4 starts to lose its urgency is once the player finds their son. At that point the decisions the player makes are no longer strictly personal and serve only to advance one of the four factions interests. At this point, the player picks a faction to back and does their bidding from there to the end of the game.\n\nAnd none of the factions interests really seem to matter, which makes it hard to find motivation. \n\nThere’s the obvious living in a post apocalyptic wasteland thing which is a problem. \n\nThere’s a big running theme throughout the game of people snatching. Do I need to care about them?\n\nThe Minutemen just want to mind their own business free from raider and synth raids, which is nice, but defending a lot of small towns isn’t really some grand ending to a game (that’s not the Minutemen ending but it should be because really the Minutemen destroying the Institute when their general is also the director of the Institute seems like something that doesn’t need to happen).\n\nThe final issue gets a bit/a lot racist, which is the Brotherhood of Steel (who seem much nastier than the nice group of lads I met in Fallout 3) who think that all synths, ghouls and super mutants need to be destroyed, no ifs no buts. bodySpoilers lie ahead for Fallout 3, 4 and New Vegas so reader beware. ![fallout-4-large-1021x580.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmVuaY5dMdHKD7rJYQTm4VEtijWEHTBxDQHk4fo6kyZxw3/fallout-4-large-1021x580.jpg) Let’s start with the all important caveats before criticise something people love. It’s just not that much of a problem to me, yeah some super mutants are a bit nasty, and I don’t really like to decorate with so much human flesh, but genocide seems like a bad solution. \n\nSo there’s no obviously important thing the player has to do next. There’s one last thing too. The more of the main quest you do, the less of the game the player has access to. There’s a point where the player loses access to other \nfactions. \n\nTo finish, I think this uncovers an important point. Stories in games need to fit the medium. The conflict between the three big factions has some interesting plot points, and if they were to be viewed from the outside would be great, but a first person roleplaying game needs to be more personal. The actions of the player character have to feel somewhat organic. The most natural response in Fallout 4 after finding your son is to spend the next couple of days in the Dugout Inn and then wondering why your headache is so bad.",

titleWhy Fortnite is so successful
body![fortnite.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmTFgF29LSERE94tFPxtQC8tha1icw32Na5sBD6SWAGVQ3/fortnite.jpg) Fortnite: Battle Royale has taken the world by an increasingly intense storm. It's already the [most viewed game in Youtube history ](http://www.nme.com/news/fortnite-most-watched-game-youtube-history-2280172), the [most viewed game on twitch](https://www.twitchmetrics.net/games/viewership) , its become incredibly mainstream, and it's making [a lot of money](https://www.superdataresearch.com/fortnite-is-eating-pubgs-lunch/). Why, like Hansel in Zoolander, is it so hot right now? # It's Free One way to get something into homes easily is to give it away. It's the same with sports rights on tv, with newspapers, with vaccines as it is with games. If you want a lot of people to have something, take away the barrier to entry. Sure you have to free up some space on your hard drive, you have to wait while you download the file, but trying Fortnite comes with very little risk. This, combined with a huge marketing push, and the virality of clips, streams and videos, means it's no surprise that it has surpassed [45 million downloads](https://www.pcgamesn.com/fortnite/fortnite-battle-royale-player-numbers). # It's fair As with any free-to-pay game, there has to be some revenue stream, and Fortnite: Battle Royale gets it very right. Nothing you can buy will make winning games easier on the face of it. There is an argument that the colour of your avatar may have some psychological effects, but I'm unconvinced by the arguments in the case of Fortnite (supposedly red makes you more aggressive, blue makes you calmer, which is ideal in Fortnite really depends on the scenario and who you are, I can't decide). If anything, the default skins are the hardest to see, as most of the map is green fields and wooden structures, so green and brown clothes are ideal. While the skins you can buy don't make you better, they are appealing, they have their own character and they add something to the game world. The most equitable thing about the in game purchases though, is how you know what you are getting and how much it costs you. There's no gambling, quasi-gambling, buying things you don't want in order to get the thing you do want etc. You either purchase the skin you want for the price listed, or you purchase the battle pass where the rewards are made clear from the start. Or if you don't want to spend money, you get a mechanically identical game. # It's fun Ultimately none of the previous paragraphs would be relevant at all if the game was rubbish. Nobody wants to buy skins in a game they don't want to play. A game won't become popular if people don't tell their mates how much they like it. Games have to be good games before any form of business model will help them. The first thing is the format is compelling. Like horde modes and base building in the past, battle royale is the must have game mode to add to your game. It's a great genre, putting 100 players on an island together, having to scrap for every weapon they can get their hands on, before the other players shoot them with it. It starts intense, with that scrap on the ground. Then there's a build up, where players build up their inventory, having to make hard choices, including how much time they spend finding loot and how early they need to move into the zone. Get all the loot but fail to set up camp, you're a sitting duck, set up camp without the necessary firepower, you've got your hands full, that balance is the game in the middle. Then you get the finale, when the last 10 players are squeezed closer and closer together, with bigger and better guns, until just one remains, the victor. Fortnite gets this right, with a map just big enough while you can get across the whole thing on foot before the storm hits you (if you run at the right moment), and supply drops, so the longer you wait the more, and better gear will enter the island. Add to this, the minecraft-ish building, which not only opens the map up vertically, but gives you the chance to defend yourself regardless of where the circle ends up. Building makes the fights varied, as you sacrifice shooting for getting the high ground, block rockets with wooden stairs and box enemies in to lay a trap for them. Fortnite also gets multiplayer right. Not just that the servers usually cope pretty well with 100 players at the same time, but that your team mates in squads and duos are important. In some, especially older, shooters, team mates basically constitute cannon fodder and distractions. I remember playing Halo 3 and finding I won almost every Team Slayer game if people on my team quit or got disconnected, because numbers didn't really help that much. In Fortnite, having a team mate lets you shoot and build at the same time, it lets you cover multiple directions so you don't get shot in the back, it extends your lifespan if you get knocked down. Good teamwork trumps good shooting most of the time, and good Fortnite players know the value of keeping their team mates stocked with weapons and resources. The other thing Fortnite gets really well is progression. Once you get the hang of the basics of Fortnite, you'll rarely lose a game and think "there was nothing I could do to change that". Winning is hard, only one in 25, 50 or 100 gets that victory royale at the end, that's what makes it so sweet, but it always feels achievable. The killcam helps, so you know where the person that killed you was, as do the clip archives if you really want to examine your mistakes and their successes. What gives you the real sense you can still win though, is the random nature of loot. It can be annoying, when you run into the first house you land next to and there's not a single gun, and the fella in the roof breaks down and kills you, but you'll be back in a game three minutes later and it probably won't happen again. Where the random nature helps, is you can always believe you'll have slightly better weapons. "If only I had a rocket launcher I would have won" is something I've said several times when I came second in solos. It's probably not true but it would have given me an chance against the guy at the top of his giant base. The truth is with almost any gun in the game there's a way of getting the kill with it if you build properly and shoot straight. That combination of always having a chance, but always having the chance to have a better chance, means the skill ceiling seems penetrable however good you actually are. Lastly, it's worth noting how Epic Games are supporting the game well. New equipment, balancing the weapons, limited time modes all keep the game fresh and functional. The game gets fairer (as in more functional strategies, rather than just the old double pump dominating) every week, and with its continued success there's no sign of that stopping soon.

titleAn Ode to Pro Cycling Manager
body![pcming.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmcgAfPowokDRgdaw3UGhPGgkiJHHDfhBQqbZ8j3M2DFXa/pcming.jpg) In 2016, during a steam sale, I made a slightly strange purchase. For what could not have been more than £3 I bought Pro Cycling Manager 2015. I've always been a fan of sports management sims, and I had a decent interest in cycling, and for £3 it's not the end of the world if I don't enjoy it, so I pulled the trigger on a year old game from a franchise I'd never heard of. ## As of 18/04/2018, I have 493 hours logged on steam. While on the face of it sports management simulators can seem boring, with a narrow appeal, they act like any other computer game. Games rely on two things to engage the player, atmosphere and feedback. Atmosphere can be built in a number of ways. All gamers have had that moment in a game where they walk into the final corridor before a boss, and the combination of audio and visual cues raises your heart rate and gives you that feeling of "right now it's about to go down and I'm nervous". A good sports management sim can do that too. I genuinely had to quit the game before a big stage of the Giro D'Italia because I didn't feel ready to take it on and wanted to come back fresher the next day. The big races feel important, they are decided on small things that you can do right but you can miss or get wrong and that pressure is important in a game which isn't going to have visually spectacular set pieces of fun little gameplay loops. Feedback is the other really important feature in a game. Any game you play where you fail at your task, and you don't come away thinking "oh I shouldn't have done that" has failed at its job. To keep logging back on you want to feel like you can get better, like you have things to try that will lead to rewards. Pro Cycling Manager does that well, as you get to see the whole race and all the riders in it just at a much faster speed than a real bike race. You see when the attacks go, you see when your rider was dropped, you can see what kinds of riders succeed when the ones you selected failed. There's a couple of things you can't help, if you get a puncture or crash, there's very little you can do to stop that (though a few things to mitigate the effects). There's also obviously stronger riders and weaker riders, and a climber with an average of 65 isn't going to beat a climber with an average of 80 on a mountain stage 99% of the time, but you can bridge smaller stat gaps through strategy often. ## Pro Cycling Manager changed my relationship with cycling When I got the game I was someone who would watch the grand tours, the world championships and the olympics, and the occasional major classic if I had the correct tv service at the time. I appreciated the sport enjoyed riding my bike but I didn't engage with it obsessively like I do now. Playing this game gave me an appreciation for the structure of the season, how the races lead into one another. It gave me an appreciation for small races with interesting routes and histories in their own right. It gave me an appreciation for less heralded riders, the guys on the team who's job was never to win, and how they actually influenced races. I'm far more interested in cycling now than I was 493 hours of playing the game ago. ## A game that rewards the player I mentioned how the game gives useful feedback earlier, but what makes this a great example of the genre is how powerful you feel as a manager. As with many games of this type, building a roster of athletes that can cover all eventualities to an elite level is hard, but if you focus on specific areas you can punch above your budget in certain races. By winning more, and winning things your sponsors ask for, you get more budget to challenge for bigger and harder races. It also rewards knowledge of the sport, as conventional strategies from real life still work to a large extent, and the AI can be pushed around by aggressive strategies. There's also a sense you get back what you put in in the game, the more hands on you get with the training programmes and fitness objectives the more specific your riders performances will get. It's not necessary to enjoy the game but it's nice when games give you that option. ## small issues It's not perfect. Because the game has to speed up the races, sprints and sprint trains cover larger distances. While on flat stages this isn't a huge problem it does mean certain courses vary in character from real life. The game uses a bit more computing power than ideal. There's probably good technical reasons for this (animating 198 independent characters can't be easy) but compared to something like International Cricket Captain or Football Manager it will run worse. There's also a bug I have which breaks the bring to front feature on windows until I restart, but it's manageable.

\n\n## As of 18/04/2018, I have 493 hours logged on steam.\n\nWhile on the face of it sports management simulators can seem boring, with a narrow appeal, they act like any other computer game. Games rely on two things to engage the player, atmosphere and feedback. Atmosphere can be built in a number of ways. All gamers have had that moment in a game where they walk into the final corridor before a boss, and the combination of audio and visual cues raises your heart rate and gives you that feeling of \"right now it's about to go down and I'm nervous\". A good sports management sim can do that too. I genuinely had to quit the game before a big stage of the Giro D'Italia because I didn't feel ready to take it on and wanted to come back fresher the next day. The big races feel important, they are decided on small things that you can do right but you can miss or get wrong and that pressure is important in a game which isn't going to have visually spectacular set pieces of fun little gameplay loops.\n\nFeedback is the other really important feature in a game. Any game you play where you fail at your task, and you don't come away thinking \"oh I shouldn't have done that\" has failed at its job. There's a couple of things you can't help, if you get a puncture or crash, there's very little you can do to stop that (though a few things to mitigate the effects). titleSome thoughts about Sport's TV rights
body![skysports-pro14-muntser-glasgow-ospreys_4081465.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmcZK8S7EhZBACRgXWu8Lw9dF54UBeVxSyQUdaBP1UMdEc/skysports-pro14-muntser-glasgow-ospreys_4081465.jpg) ### So yesterday it was announced that the BBC had failed to secure the rights to live Pro14 rugby next season (originally reported by BBC Wales, BBC Alba have also said it, seems inferred that BBC NI won't have it either though I've not heard from the horses mouth as of Wednesday afternoon). The rumour is that subscription channel Premier Sports have made a substantially larger offer. The reaction has been lively to say the least. # Who are Premier Sports? I'd describe them as a very niche TV channel. I originally encountered them trying to watch State of Origin rugby league games. They used to be the place to watch NRL in the UK but that doesn't seem to be the case anymore. Their current lineup includes NHL hockey, NASCAR, GAA, Motocross, English Championship Rugby League and some osbcure soccer leagues. They also pick up the odd bit of sport that nobody else has, such as France's November rugby tests and this year's Tour Down Under. As far as pricing goes, it costs £9.99 a month on SKY or Virgin Media, though with SKY I believe there is a £10 connection fee. It also has online access, including the last week of broadcasts on demand, for the same price. What seems to be getting very little attention is they also operate a freeview channel called Freesports. Until the full deal is public we won't know how much if all of the rugby will be behind a paywall. # So what's the problem? Always, when you take something that was free to a paid model, people won't like it. It's very hard to convince someone that they should pay for something they had for free last week. Also, it being a new channel most people won't have already, it's even worse. As things stand, to see every game Ulster and Ireland play, I already need to spend £26 a month on BT Sport, a minimum of £18 for Sky Sports Action and now another £10 on top for the Pro14 games. £54 a month before you even take into account the cost of the basic Sky bundle is a lot of money. There's numerous ways to get the channels depending on your broadband provider but I don't think my route will be uncommon. This will undoubtedly lead to a fraction of the current viewership, but that might not be very important. # Sport's relationship with Television First and foremost, professional sport is a business operation. The rights owners have to make money, or at least cover their costs. There's broadly speaking three things to take into account when selling tv rights: Fanbase - in order to create demand for a product, there has to be a way to learn about it's existence. In rugby's case, keeping the Six Nations and the World Cup on free to air television is important for most of the unions, as it provides an entry point for people to become fans and even players of the sport. Cricket has suffered since 2005 in England, where all live coverage has moved to pay tv. Exposure - A similar, but distinct concept. Any sport that benefits from major sponsorship deals to fund it's competitors (cycling, motorsport) rely on mass viewership to make the sponsorship viable in many cases. In most markets the Tour de France is live and free to air, which provides a huge platform for team sponsors to be seen by a global audience. Money - Basically if the money offered by a broadcaster exceeds the value of the other two factors, it makes sense for the rights holders to sell to said broadcaster. # The case for the Pro14 To put it simply, the Pro14 is desperate for money. This was the driving force behind bringing in the South African teams. If Premier Sport are offering any significant raise it is in their interest to take the money. From a business perspective I struggle to see the downside, even though it's unpopular. It might lead to increased gate receipts as people will be less able to see it on tv. As harsh as it sounds, if you're neither going to go to games or pay to watch them on TV, you present very little value to the team you're a fan of. If the Pro14 thought this deal would significantly hamper their title sponsor Guinness, or the indiviual shirt sponsors of the teams, they wouldn't take it. They aren't trying to hurt their fans, they are trying to survive.

titleTalking points from the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race 2018
body![mccartyh_1500_getty.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmWP59G6jtsf6XLDPtz4KtivBiw4W4Scx6kX4TGzKYuvtt/mccartyh_1500_getty.jpg) The second World Tour event of the year took place in the early hours of Sunday morning, and it produced the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race with it's first ever home winner. Jay McCarthy secured his first win in over two years from a reduced bunch sprint ahead of Elia Viviani and Daryl Impey. The race in general was pretty interesting with the last lap featuring a lot of attacking riding. # Impey's form After winning the Tour Down Under last week Daryl Impey carried his form from South Australia to Victoria. Helped by a convincing attack by team mate Esteban Chaves over the final climb of the day, Impey was always where he needed to be. Possibly caught out by McCarthy sprinting from so far out but there's not much you can do when someone is able to hold that top speed for so long. # Viviani a serious threat for San Remo Elia Viviani is a fast bike rider of that there is no doubt, but last season he finished with some tremendously strong rides at one day races. His second half of last season included wins at the Hamburg Cyclaclassic and the Bretagne Classic, the latter of which is a tough race (previous winners include Nibali, Gerrans, Kristoff, Pozzato), as well as stages of the Tour of Britain, Tour of Austria, Tour du Poitou-Charentes and a silver medal at the European Championships. He's on great form to start the year, having already won a stage of the Tour Down Under, and this leaves Quick-Step Floors with a big decision to make. After the Poggio, if there's to be a sprint finish, who leads out and who rides for the win between Gaviria and Viviani. It's a nice decision to make but both men are strong contenders. # Aqua Blue Sport's new bikes This was the first time this year I've had a good look at Aqua Blue Sport in a race, and I was fascinated to see how their new 3T Strada rode. For those unaware, Aqua Blue are exlusively riding the 3T Strada this year, which is an aero bike, designed for wide 28mm tyres, built only for disc brakes and with nowhere to hang a front derailleur. Wide tyres, disc brakes and aero frames will be pretty common on the World Tour this year, but all those bikes with have a front mech. Second division team Aqua Blue will be running just one one front chainring all year, with a wide range cassette on the back. Most of the time, getting a wide enough range of gears shouldn't be a problem, they can pretty much replicate the ratio of a 34-30 (front-rear) for the steepest climbs, and still have something close to a 53-11 by running a 44 tooth front ring and a 10-34 cassette. The Issue will be that they will be slightly further apart, a typical 22 speed bike (2 chainrings, 11 speed cassette) has about 14 different gear ratios with some overlap, which means running just one chainring loses you three gear choices. Why I bring this up, is that Lasse Norman Hansen had a strong race in the breakaway aboard his 3T, winning the king of the mountains classification. Hansen is no stranger to having to ride various cadences, being a former Olympic gold medallist on the track for the omnium, so he's got an advantage there that others wont. What did seem clear to me was he always looked slightly wrong on the bike, certainly spinning a different gear to his breakaway companions most of the time. He made it work though, so it might not be that big an issue racing.

titleBelated Tour Down Under write up
bodyBit late to writing this, sometimes life gets in the way, but the Tour Down Under was surprisingly not awful and worth writing about. Usually the Tour Down Under is tedious, and somewhat confusingly thats for reasons that still featured prominently this year. Typically there's four flattish stages, including a criterium in Adelaide, a hard rolling stage, and the finish up Willunga Hill. There's no time trial, and Willunga Hill is not a mountain (topographically it sort of is, but nobody would look at it and go "see that mountain over there", you get my point), so it doesn't suit tradition general classification contenders, and doesn't offer a racey enough course like you might get at the BinckBank Tour or the Tour of the Basque Country to have a great battle for the race win. It's sort of like a pre-season friendly, except it carries a huge number of World Tour points, more than moth of the previously mentioned races, as many as Paris-Nice, Tour de Suisse or winning a monument like Liege-Bastogne-Liege. So it's a race that doesn't really suit anyone in particular, at a stupidly hot time of year, as far from home for most of the teams as the World Tour goes, months before most riders intend to peak for the year, which carries a big reward. # This years winner... Daryl Impey! ![6307d.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmcguC5KDGzkyfqm1Cky6HxGfhQ3opRyXbmCxaBGQcHGdT/6307d.jpg) Impey almost put together the classic Tour Down Under win, except he kept being second. In Stirling, he was second behind his teammate Caleb Ewan on the tough finishing circuit. On the downhill finish into Uraidla, he was second behind World Champion Peter Sagan. Finally up Willunga Hill, he was second behind Richie Porte with a furiously fast finish to put him level on time with last year's winner when all the bonus seconds were added up. Impey won the overall based on his lower total stage finishing position, which is about as tight as it can get. Of all the stage races on the World Tour, this would be the only one realistically you'd point to and say "Impey could win that", so it will satisfy his team Mitchelton-Scott (who are Australian themselves) that they were rewarded for giving him the chance. Impey one of those riders who get's up climbs pretty well, and can win sprints on occasions where traditional leadouts don't work (either a hard stage, or a steep finish), it will be interesting to see what he does with the rest of his season, could easily be one of the contenders in the Amstel Gold Race, Strade Bianche maybe, Clasica San Sebastian too, those really racey hilly races rather than the huge hill at the end to decide them classics (Fleche Wallone, Liege-B-L). I think what made this year's Tour Down Under so satisfying to watch was the variety of winners. Any race Peter Sagan shows up to with the intention of doing something rather than paying back others is naturally more exciting, and his win into Uraidla was very impressive. He hung on through some quite hard climbing before going on the attack, was then reeled in before narrowly pulling off the downhill sprint finish. The flat stages themselves were exciting for the variety that could win. While last year Caleb Ewan won everything even remotely flat, his only victory came somewhat unexpectedly high above sea level, perhaps a sign of his training to survive the Tour de France this year. Andre Greipel won both the first and last stages, and Elia Viviani who opened his account with Quick-Step Floors. The other stories of the race were Tom-Jelte Slagter, who's won this race before but his podium place will have been a huge result for new team Dimension Data, and shows a return to form for the Dutchman, and Egan Bernal. Bernal's first race for Sky (I think he rode Tirreno-Adriatico last year so won't say first World Tour race), and he finished sixth, level on time with Ulissi in fourth. He lost just two seconds on the road to Daryl Impey, and just the 10 to Porte, which on a very hot and hard week of racing is good going. He's much better suited to proper mountains so this won't be the last we hear of Bernal this year, big big big talent.
