      "body": "A few weeks ago I wrote about my life changing choices by leaving my job as a nutritionist and beginning an apprenticeship program on an organic vegetable farm for the growing season of 2018! You can read about here https://steemit.com/adventure/@pollypocket/life-changes\nToday I wanted to write about a few of the lessons I learned very quickly about working outside on a farm. First, I just wanted to mention I didn't quite plan my career changes out strategically, it all happened fairly quickly. I had about two weeks to find an apartment to move and give my current employer my notice. Then I made a list of what all I would need because my business casual attire wouldn't suit for out in the fields. \nSo my basic list included:\n\n-comfortable jeans I didn't care to get ruined\n-a large hat to protect my face, ears and neck from the sun\n-reliable waterproof boots\n-gloves\n-raincoat\n-sunscreen\n-thick socks for new boots\n-a pocketknife\n-a tote to keep in the trunk of my car\n\nI already had worn-out sneakers and waterproof ankle boots I bought from an estate sale for $4, but they were a knock off brand that wasn't so waterproof after all so as a gift, my boyfriend got me a pair of mucks, which I absolutely love and wear almost daily at work, yes, even the hot and muggy days. In the morning there's still dew which would get my socks and sneakers soaked, so I always wear my mucks and then I keep sneakers in the car for later if needed. I also had a stockpile of junky tshirts from highschool or shirts I saved for workouts so I was good on that!\n\nMy first day working on the farm, I learned how to seed flats in the greenhouse. There's a large desk with a large sink next to it. We fill with the soil that includes compost, potting mix, peat, etc., water it some, mix, and shovel large piles onto the 3-5 flats laid out on the desk, spread the soil to cover all the flats, but not pat it down. There's about 1-3inches of mix on top. Then we take one flat at a time, lift it a few inches up off the desk then drop it. This helps compact the soil slightly in the cells, then we brush away the remaining soil on top back into the sink for later. This quickly turns your hands black. So..\n\nLesson #1: **Cut your nails!**\n![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmbPP7joQiFSevYS8psGkSqybgrhkE8MTXEqRgPz6TcayN/image.png)\nEven though I'm cutting my nails, I still get dirt stuck under them but they are easier to clean, and I'm less likely to scratch zucchini when picking them up, stabbing and getting rocks and potatoes stuck under them, etc. *Ouch!*\n\nLesson # 2: **Wear sunscreen daily!** Even if it's cloudy!\n![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQme3gFn3UBHr99MRTJomcoT3msNet7vSU1XRoqSem7gAF1/image.png)\nIt may be hard to tell from the picture but I was beet red from my first day and thought I was too cool for sunscreen!\n\nLesson #3: **Wear sunscreen daily!** Literally! Everywhere! \n(https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmcS7jZtbSVC7fNMiGKPRoDPbs5F5WDhfHQ7CiQqKsxKNk/image.png)\nI thought I fixed the problem on my second day when I wore a long sleeve shirt, but I still didn't use sunscreen on my hands. *Ouch!* Like I said, lesson learned! Now I apply it daily, even on cloudy days, in the morning before I get in my car so it has time to soak in while I drive to the farm, and I'll reapply it again after lunch, sometimes more throughout the day if I'm out weeding, harvesting, washing my hands and arms a lot, etc. \n\nLesson #4: **You're out in nature, learn to coexist!**\n![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmSde597p3wFGGaMLWFzLzWqKt9DSgug9U1Fr8dPpfhtmL/image.png)\nMy first harvest day for the CSA I was asked to do the green onions in the hoophouse. When my boss came to check how I was doing, he pointed out a garter snake about 10 feet from me! So this is what was staring at me the whole time I was working! While it's harmless, I'm not a fan of snakes, but I especially hate spiders. As I'm working with my hands constantly in the ground and moving dirt, transplanting by hand, weeding, etc., spiders are always crawling out and running away!! *Gross!* But at least they're more afraid of me and are going the opposite direction, and I know they're good for the plants because they're helping to eat other bugs so I really try to not freak out in front of anyone and I try to continue working without flinching. \n![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmeUNfzkMfr7hXVR54dVW9pMafWxanLLTziFRtxwu2cVK7/image.png)\nSeriously though, how creepy? \n\nLast but not least, Lesson #5: **Stay hydrated, always bring your water**\n\nThis should be a no brainer but you might not think it's so hot or humid out, that you'll be back soon, or you can always take a break and go get it. I know myself, and I would keep pushing myself to keep working and not waste time walking all the way back to the car/shed/house to grab a drink. We had a couple of really bad hot and humid days in the high 90s and one worker, on my day off, got heat exhaustion. Even if you think it's annoying to carry around a bottle or whatever you're using, just do it. The farm I work on is about 4 acres. If I bring my bottle to the field and keep moving around, at least it's there, I can carry it and set it down somewhere rather than spend 10 minutes walking back and forth to grab it later.\n\n\nWell thanks for reading some of my very first lessons learned about working on a farm! I feel the work environment wasn't as great as it should've been and that's probably why it was less good days. But I still love nutrition and I find it fascinating as well! I love about working for an organic vegetable farm and learning how to grow these healthy, wonderful sources for great nutrition!",

      "body": "Hey Steemers! It has been a few months since I've posted anything on here, it has been a busy time with a huge life change so I thought I would blog about it. I took a step back from my previous job and took a leap into another direction! \n![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmXorTJpmsijrEEaacSCPXbAXQd6g1DMEeRRnpoUnyhbmS/image.png)\n\nFor the last 3.5 years I was working for as a nutritionist for lower income women and children, but moved and transferred to another company for the last 2yrs. It was *a lot* different than what I was used to, different community and workplace vibes. Working with the public can be a difficult job, very demanding. Sometimes bigger isn't always better and of course most businesses run based off the participants/clients/customers. So of course, the number of participants was never good enough. It didn't matter how much time or effort I put into the appointments, how much I tried to help, listen, encourage, provide, nothing felt good enough.  Of course many participants just wanted their stuff and to leave, but then there are those that made every hard day, hour, minute worth it and it would be enough to lift your spirits back up again, for a while. **Bottom line:** I was getting run down mentally which made me feel physically exhausted. I could've used a drink after almost every day (*but didn't usually act on it*). It just came to the point where I wasn't in love with the job anymore and needed to do something else. It was a comfortable position, cushy benefits and pay of course, *but is it worth it?*\n\nMaybe, if that's **all** that matters...\n\n![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmdD8WY17ksHu5KEFw5HmHjVCXvUZpEsXJcq4k5uZCKhjn/image.png)\n\nI've been working PT to get my Masters. During my last trimester, I had a class in Sustainability which I was in love with. My boyfriend and I have a dream to start a market garden. We have our own little garden, just extended to 25'x18' and are practicing growing methods, composting, harvesting, etc. That class pushed me further into wanting to be part of the change, make a change faster, to grow real food, the right way, and to help people, animals, and the environment benefit from it.  While researching information for homework I came across a website for my state and looked at the forum boards. It listed, \"Jobs/Internships\", \"Free\", \"For Sale\", etc. I thought it would be interesting to see what type of jobs they had. Many were for farm managers, but a handful were for full time work and apprenticeships to learn how to farm. Reading the descriptions to these apprenticeships was like  a lightbulb turning on in my head, I think I actually teared up with joy! How cool would it be to just go and not only work on a farm, but actually learn everything the farmer already knows, make mistakes now before you get your own land, learn how to plant, produce, harvest, and make money off of it, all while getting paid, spending all day outside, etc.?!\n\nIt might not sound interesting so most of you, but haven't you ever just wanted to take a chance at something else, even though it sounded a *little* crazy? What was holding you back? Did you take that leap? If not, have you regretted it?  I figured it couldn't hurt checking into it and getting more information. So I updated my resume, sent an e-mail to the apprenticeships that were paid and FT, **and I went for it!** I don't have any kids or huge responsibilities, besides Izzy and Calli, so why not? As long as I'm getting paid, keeping A's in my classes, and doing something I enjoy, what can be so wrong??\n\n**NOTHING!** It has been a little over 1 month since I started working FT as an apprentice for an organic vegetable farm and I just **LOVE it**! I feel like a weight has been lifted off of my shoulders and I can breathe again! \n\n![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmVMmPC6rMzDXxpVX8pLQ1QkW9yLjTr4bsr8E2mQU2poDU/image.png)\nThere was some hard work getting here, having to go through the awkward two week notice for my current job thing and tell people I'd rather work on a farm than do this, kind of move out of the home my boyfriend and I share and PT move into an apartment 2.5hrs away, within a 3 week notice, find a place, move furniture and decide what I should take, what can I leave while I'll be at work, move the cat and dog, and oh yeah! Tell my parents I'm leaving a secured job for something that's....not always? =|  It's hard living or giving up something for someone else, and this is just something I had to do for myself, no regrets! Many people don't realize they can change very tiny things in their lives to shift towards a more sustainable way of life whether it's saving leftovers and eating them over the next few days, composting, learning about \"Best By, Sell By\" dates, turning off water when brushing teeth, \"meatless Mondays\", etc. If everyone made small changes, it'd make a huge difference. A bigger issue I would love to see change is in the Farm Bill towards better Ag practices and conservation efforts.
