I finally sat down and edited this one, well overdue 🧡\n\nThis jump was all about good energy, adventure, and sharing something genuinely special 🧡\n\nThe type of jump you’re seeing here is known as a rollover  (or a McConkey), if you’ve been around the sport long enough.\n\nFor this kind of BASE jump, absolutely zero wind is essential. The parachute isn’t packed, it’s hanging fully deployed in front of you. Any breeze at all can introduce movement in the canopy or lines, which is the last thing you want.\n\nThe exit involves diving out and over the lines to keep constant tension. If you don’t, slack develops, and the more slack there is, the harder the hit when your body weight suddenly loads the system.\n\nIn simple terms, a strong forward dive into a full somersault, clearing the lines cleanly, rotating all the way through, and then flying away looking cool.\n\nStepping off without committing properly would be a serious mistake. Failing to clear the lines could result in getting wrapped up, and that’s not something you walk away from. This is why dead calm conditions and a powerful push off the object are non negotiable.\n\nTo be absolutely clear, I’m not a BASE instructor and this is not a 'how to'. There’s a lot more involved in setting up and executing this kind of jump. Please don’t attempt a rollover just because you’ve seen it here.\n\nThis was a two way jump. I took a side float exit from the bridge so I could film my mate Gary performing the rollover. Watching him fly away from that angle while I dropped into freefall was unreal, yew! 🧡",

The nights were brutally cold, every time our gloves touched the steel it felt like it burned straight through them. In the still air, even the faintest clink or bump echoed down the street, enough to catch the attention of late night dog walkers or nearby residents. We moved slowly and deliberately, never using lights 😈\n\nDepending on wind direction and how the boom was positioned, we sometimes had to land on the green instead of the beach, which was a more awkward approach, but we never had any issues. We jumped this crane again and again over months, and somehow managed to keep it completely drama free 🤘🏼\n\nCranes are hands down one of my favourite BASE objects. They’re temporary, often placed in unusual locations, and always come with their own challenges. BASE jumping means different things to different people...some prefer cliffs and mountains for long delays, but I’m drawn to urban jumps. Figuring out access, moving quietly, and avoiding security is all part of the experience for me. It adds another layer that makes the jump feel earned.\n\nGaining access to sites like this falls under civil trespass, which in the UK carries very little consequence.\n\nWe never cause damage when accessing a site. Without getting into specifics, a telescopic ladder and good gloves usually do the job. And if any site managers happen to read this, anti-climb fencing isn’t as effective as you might think 😉\n\nThis particular crane did have a security guard, but he stayed in his cabin. With the lights on inside and the window open, his visibility was pretty limited. The site was close to a hospital, so constant sirens gave us plenty of cover, allowing us to move up the crane quickly with all that background noise.\n\nI couldn’t tell you exactly how many times we jumped this crane, only that it was a lot. Access was dialled, we had two solid landing options, and all we needed was the right conditions.\n\nOne thing that still surprises me is how many people walk their dogs at 2am. It happens constantly. Just as we’re ready to go, there’s almost always someone wandering past with a dog, forcing us to wait it out.\n\nBecause of the crane’s height and layout, static line jumps were the sensible option. Quick dispatch, straight on ice, snow white flesh, and filleted the next morning. Dusted in flour, salt and pepper, hot pan with butter and a squeeze of lemon. A few half hearted takes came and went… then something serious arrived.\n\nThe Pike followed the lure not once, not twice, but three times before finally committing. When it hit, it was violent and completely unexpected. The strike was so aggressive it genuinely made me jump...one of the most adrenaline fuelled moments I’ve had while fishing.\n\nI hold access to several stretches of this river, but this particular section doesn’t get much attention from me. It’s prone to flooding, so opportunities to fish it are limited. With more rain on the way, I decided to take the gamble and give it another go while conditions allowed.\n\nAlthough I’ve been targeting Pike for many years, it’s been a while since I landed a proper specimen. Most of my recent time has been spent chasing Sea Bass and Carp, so I felt slightly rusty going into it.\n\nMany anglers wait until after the first frost before switching to dead baits, but I’ve never fully bought into that idea. I usually begin dead baiting from the 1st of October and have consistently had success well before the frost arrives. Lures are always my preference, but as winter approaches, Pike become less willing to expend energy chasing them. You can still catch on lures, but placement becomes critical...often the fish will only commit if the effort required is minimal.\n\nWhat made this capture so interesting was the behaviour. This Pike actively hunted the lure, making repeated passes before striking. Was it tracking it for hours before finally deciding to attack? Or did it only notice it moments before? Hardly any wind, and I was very current at the time, especially with turbine jumps.\n\nI’d been toying with the idea of doing a blade walk for a while, and something about that evening just felt right. The blade was coated in dew, so it was slick, but the top surface has a faint sandpaper like texture. If you look closely at the photo you can see a slightly darker strip on the upper side, that was the only part I trusted. The glossy edges were basically “instant slip” territory, so I had to avoid pushing off them.\n\nMy plan was simple, walk out until it felt too sketchy, then jump. But the further I went, the more I felt like I could actually reach the tip. That changed the moment my mate called out that the blade was beginning to move. I instantly bailed, turned around, and exited.\n\nCould I reach the end if I tried again? Probably. The motor is 22 years old! But that’s the beauty of 2-stroke engines, they just keep on going and going as you can easily rebuild them.\n\nWhen I bought this motor second hand a few years ago it ceased on me within a matter of weeks, as the previous owner did not take care of it. In fact we found barnacles inside of it. Thankfully my co-driver is handy and was able to un cease it shortly after it happened.\n\n\n![IMG_2114.JPG](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmTzdoQTg4i4oJCoj7P9p2EhnT2kYuxYZ7pZ6Q1eF4Pb1a/IMG_2114.JPG)\n\n![IMG_0308.JPG](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmWbM1CEScWYmQgWthQK8z5a8HB51UEXNgJZt5gweTRdRP/IMG_0308.JPG)\n\nOnce we cleaned it up and replaced some gaskets, we got it working again, but it was then sent to Jeff Purves at Ocean Racing to get a full rebuild and mods for racing.\n\nSome of the work that was done:\n\n.\tExhaust porting\n.\tBigger exhaust\n.\tHead skimmed\n.\tWelded crank\n.\tRev limited disconnected\n.\tCarbon reeds\n.       128 Jets\n.\tRacing engine mounts\n\nThe motor actually came with a lightened fly wheel without ring gear, but as that’s illegal in the race, I had to have a stock fly wheel fitted.\n\nIt was around £2000 worth of work and parts that needed replacing, and at the time it the Coronavirus was in full swing, so getting parts was an absolute nightmare. A lot of the parts we had to source second hand, just so that we could get it rebuilt in time for racing.\n\n![IMG_0144.JPG](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmQP7kY1deQvt3dSeMSzBfqNHcejqCsZ7iWx7CpxE234UJ/IMG_0144.JPG)\n\nGenerally in Thundercat racing, you will need a few props. We have a 13 pitch semi cleaver, which we rarely use, but is great for Surf events. We currently borrow a 14 pitch prop, which is a great all-rounder but can handle rough conditions but still has low end bite. The main prop we use is a 15 pitch, as this gets us a decent top speed, but also grips in hard turns, it doesn’t let go like the others. The sacrifice is losing the hole shot though. \n\n*You can see the prop on the left has been worked as oppose to the same prop on the right. Prop on the left is a 14p and prop on right is 15p but you get the idea. This can be down to set up, motor height off the transom, size and type of prop as well as other things such as oil ratio, type of oil, any fuel additives and engine mods.\n\n![IMG_0677.JPG](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmbLWHpiBBFm8VHxKV4m2FTcKtQy7PPpk7qNRcq4NLgbdN/IMG_0677.JPG)\n\nLeMans style beach start, where the co drivers line up and run toward the boat once the green flagged has been dropped. The driver is not allowed to put the kill cord in until the flag is dropped, and is not allowed to jump into the boat until the co driver has both hands on the boat. The driver is not allowed to start the boat until both co-drivers feet are in the boat. \n\nNow, I'm going to say it and I will sound like a bad sport, but 1 team (I won't name them) were getting away with jumping in the boat before the co driver was there and then starting the motor before the co driver was fully in the boat, and thus getting an insane head start on the rest of the pack. It didn't go unnoticed by the crowd, but sadly the race officials were looking elsewhere every single time.\n\nI did see complaints being made by other teams and I believe some action may have been taken, but what I am taking away from this, is next year we will do as they do.\n\n![vlcsnap-2022-08-17-09h29m25s644.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmdTrrQUgxhTMGa8DavTmRFbWkyP3bBgnvuYuPkByz8aJy/vlcsnap-2022-08-17-09h29m25s644.jpg)\n\nWe know that the two winning boats were running Nitro and also 100:1 oil mix, which we didn’t know before the event. We now know so next time we can do the same.
