title9 Month DeepOnion: My Review and Ellaboration of the Community Evolution
body## Introduction I am following this Project for almost 9 months now. And with following I mean tracking every step of this community in the forum and every tiny development step on GitHub. I do this to get the vibe of a project which gives me a feeling if it has the potential for a long-term progress. In this review I want to talk about my experiences especially regarding the community evolvement. It’s easy to look up the technical development of the wallet, but some new users may be interested in the soft factors which are hard to gasp if you research for good projects to invest. ## My first days I joined the DeepOnion Airdrop one day before the third airdrop. It was too late to receive the airdrop already next day, but I was assured to get in the participants list for the 4th one. I hadn’t research much about DeepOnion at that time, because it was free anyway. But I was surprised by the fact that they planned to last the airdrop for 40 weeks. “40 weeks? That’s a hell of a lot time in crypto. Some roadmaps don’t even plan that far in the future.” It impressed me, because it meant that the team behind this project had a plan. A plan that must be consistent in a way, that it would be worth to invest time and patience for a very long period. Starting from this point I started to observe the development daily: Days later the first hype starts and the DeepOnion community grows very fast. The first all-time high price attracts many new people. It is a typical pump and dumb scene, so it doesn’t last long and many people leave after the price settles down again. The community forum opens its doors and a big part from the discussion about DeepOnion moves from the Bitcointalk ANN thread to the community forum. Most topics are either tutorials or low-level shilling thread. Yet, every day new members join the board bringing more life to the community. Meanwhile the price settles down below 1 Dollar. In the light of the all-time high weeks before, many people are uncertain about DeepOnions future. I am also not sure where this project is leading to. Github was almost dead, the community board contains mostly low-level content, almost no technical discussion at all – So it’s obviously that most people are rather interested in fast money than in the project itself and even less in the technical part of the project. But every single week, the airdrops were executed successfully according to the schedule. So, I stick to it and hope for the best. It wasn’t an easy decision, because highly invested people decide to leave, who gave other members confidence in the project before. ## DeepPoints DeepPoints get introduced, that gives the start for a very aggressive marketing campaign. The whole crypto space gets flooded with marketing spam about DeepOnion. The community grows in huge dimensions, mostly by people that just use DeepPoints as an income source. I personally torn about the marketing methods. On the one hand I don’t like this aggressive marketing technic, on the other hand I know that it’s working. There is a lot of truth in the saying “There isn’t such thing as bad publicity”. But I am truly concerned about the community. The forum is completely spammed with low quality post with even lower quality English. I don’t like to visit the forum anymore, because there wasn’t anything interesting to read anymore. And I was sure that other people think the same, which leaving would be a huge loss. Finally, the rewarding DeepPoints stops and most of the low-quality newcomers leave again, which I am glad about. But I have the feeling that also some of the (for me) important minds also left, that gave the project value. ## Side note *For me a good community tech project must a have balanced community. It should contain a mix of different kind of people with different professionality and skills and is structured like an onion in different layers. The heart is of course the core team, which is the steady working organ that drives the main technical development and indicates the future roadmap.* *The core team is supported by technical professionals from the community, who are aware about the technical development. They can give feedback regarding the next development steps, making little commits on github, testing new features and finding as well as fixing bugs. The technical professionals can be also the communication connection between the dev team and those, who are just interested in the technical development, but are not really educated in the specific field. They are settled in the third layer.* *This third layer also includes people with other professionals, that can give important feedback and contribution to the project in different areas (like marketing, product design etc.). Since the core team does not cover all important professionals, the community members from the third layer can influence the project significantly. On the other hand, they can offer first level support for the forth layer, saving the dev team a lot of time that is better invested in the development. Furthermore, some members are developing side-projects, which supports the adaption of the main product, helps to gain more attraction and even increases the main product features and usages. Of course, these side-projects can also come from members from the second layer.* *The forth layer contains people, that are not necessarily interested in the specific technology. But they like the movement or/and the features, that the product offers. This layer includes the most amount of people. Even though they don’t contribute to the development in a direct way, these members are crucial for receiving mass adaption. They offer very important feedback about the handling of the product and play a main part in marketing efforts. In my opinion, this structure of community projects is very important for its success. Every layer should contain a decent amount of people with a steady communication between the layers.*
https://i.imgur.com/3TGSOof.png
*Having this in mind lets go back to my story:* ## Community Progress It is clear, that the concept I explained above is not matching the current DeepOnion community. The structure is mainly represented by the core team and people from the 4th layer. That’s why I am concerned about how the current community can become the driving factor for the project. Anyway, many spamers leave the board, which I think is a good thing. At the same time the new year begins and the overall market starts to shrink. And with the shrinking market, the onion price starts falling and falling. And yet again, I was concerned about the success of the project. How will the members react to the decreasing price? Will they lose faith? But I look back and remember that we are already come this far. My ideal community vision is not reached, but I analyze its potential again: There are already fantastic side-projects like DeepDice, community Mining-pools and websites with airdrop statistics. I conclude that I will stick to my plan, and therefor stick to the project. The next weeks confirm that I made the right decision. The development speed increases. Every announcement follows another announcement. But I make also other little discoveries. People start to raise more detailed questions regarding technical issues. Other ones give specific feedback and tell about their own experience in their specific area. I start to recognize an evolving of the community structure. Threads with error reports that would have been abandoned in the last months, are now filled with specific solutions approaches from community members. The second and third layer gain new members day by day, which makes this community in return even more attractive for this specific kind of people. ## Conclusion We reach today in the timeline my little story. And despite all the concerns I had since joining this project I have never been more convinced of this project. We are currently in a successful transition phase from a low level so called “shit-coin” community to a very serious blockchain project. I have seen many people coming and leaving this project, yet it never touched the project overall. And with every additional day this community is becoming more and more stable and is getting nearer and nearer to my ideal structure for communities for community projects. For those who are also here for a longer time: Compare todays threads and discussion with those from months ago. There is a 180° turn. I am glad that I never made my decision by emotions. Instead I tried to keep the most possible objective position with led me stay here for almost 9 months now. I am looking forward to the next months. I hope I could give a little impression about DeepOnion and especially about the soft factors and the social development of the community. We are on a good way, but there is still a lot to do. We have still to work on making this project and community more developer friendly. Developers like to be challenged and fascinated. Thus, we should create a good environment for them with exciting tasks and thrilling visions.

titleDeepOnion: What Is A Zero-Knowlegde Protocol? (Rework)
bodyAfter receiving feedback regarding my last article about the Zero-Knowledge Proof I recognized it didn’t get to the heart of the matter. Thus, I decided to make a rework of the article to clear things up and make the zk-proof easier to understand. The zero-knowledge protocol is a cryptographical protocol which is mainly used for verification, for example the verification of transactions on the blockchain. The zero-knowledge protocol must satisfy three conditions: Completeness: if a statement is true, it must be verified. In terms of blockchain: A real transaction should never get rejected by the verifying service. Soundness: if a statement is false, no cheating prover can convince the honest verifier that it is true: No fake transactions should get verified. Zero-knowledge: if the statement is true, no verifier learns anything other than the fact that the statement is true. In other words, just knowing the statement (not the secret) is sufficient to imagine a scenario showing that the prover knows the secret. In terms of blockchain: The verifier doesn’t receive any information about the transaction itself, such as the moving amount, sending address and receiving address. Yet he should be able to confirm the transaction valid. How is that possible? ### Example for zero-knowledge proof To make the zero-knowledge proof clear I will explain it with an example: Peter wants to proof Vivien, that he has access to a magic door. But he doesn’t want to open the magic door in front of her, because another person might see them and come to know to the secret which opens the magic door. The door is in a cave. In the cave there are two ways. Both ways end in the magic door which connects both ways. Since both ways are curved, you can’t see the magic door from the entrance. Peter enters the cave, chooses one way and follows it to the magic door, while Vivien waits outside.
https://deeponion.org/community/attachments/upload_2018-1-10_20-10-57-png.96568.png
Vivien enters now the cave. She doesn’t know which way Peter chose and also doesn’t see him from the entrance. But she decides now what way Peter shall come back. She takes B and calls Peter to come back way B. When Peter entered the cave he decided to go the way A. The only option to go back over way B is to go through the magic door.
https://deeponion.org/community/attachments/upload_2018-1-10_20-11-48-png.96569.png
Since he is telling the truth, that he does has access to the magic door, he uses it and goes back way B. Vivien sees him coming back way B and can confirm now, that Peter has access to the magic door even though she never saw him entering it. She also does not know the secret for entering the door.
https://deeponion.org/community/attachments/upload_2018-1-10_20-12-9-png.96570.png
But what would happen if Vivien had chosen to call for way A and Peter had not access to the magic door? In this case Peter would have taken the right way even though he lied. The chances of this happening are 50%, since Vivien chooses between two ways. So statistically every second time Vivien would confirm a false statement. Regardless of this, the chances that Peter comes back the right way when he does have access to the magic door is 100%. So, if this experiment gets repeated several times two patterns appear. If Peter speaks the truth and can enter the magic door, the success rate will be 100%. After several iterations Vivien can now be sure that Peter’s statement is true. In the case that Peter lies the success rate will be about 50% in average. Vivien can now confirm that Peter does not have access to the magic door. This protocol provides a security of 99,99%. The 0,01% are the case, that Peter has luck and chose every time same way Vivien calls him to come back. ### Usage in blockchain-technology The zero-knowledge proof can also used in the verification of transactions on the blockchain. It provides advanced anonymity since the transaction can be claimed valid without exposing any information from the transaction itself. However the example above shows, that this zero-knowledge verification needs intense communication which costs data and time. Developing a fast and cheap zero-technology layer will make DeepOnion unrivaled as fast, low-fee and anonymous crypto-currency. Haven't joined [DeepOnion](https://deeponion.org/?ref=1042860) yet? titleUnanomynized Networks Are Easy Targets For Criminals
body### What's the current state? Financial transactions of cypto-currencies are fully accessible on the public blockchain. But these transactions itself are only related to sending and receiving addresses that doesn't contain any personal information about the owner of the addresses. Referring to the closed blockchain system crypto-currencies are often claimed to be anonymous. However this is not necessary true, since the nodes of each blockchain are also public. Nodes, in general, are the connection points in the network that validate and archive the transactions on the blockchain. These nodes can be examined by everyone and can be tracked down to its location. In the case of bitcoin the full nodes are mostly big mining rigs from companies that have a proper security. The map above shows the node locations of the bitcoin nodes than can be crawled from the source code easily. These contain all types of nodes: from the private wallet user to the big miners. ### The problem More advanced blockchains use other algorithms than bitcoin or mix algorithms for validating transactions. An example for that is the Proof-of-Stake-algorithm that chooses the creator of the next block by wealth or age instead of cryptographic puzzles used in Bitcoins Proof-of-Work-algorithm. This way also privat users act as important nodes for the network. Furthermore the holding of big amounts of coins benefits the staking of new coins while doing the job as full node. This leads to a big security risk, where big holders locations can be tracked down easily while working as node. In times where crypto-currencies gained a lot of attraction also criminals search for new ways of taking advantage in this new business. Thus the nodes of blockchain networks could be an easy target for hacking attacks or even physical burglaries to get access to the crypto-currencies holdings of the victim. ### The solution The best solution to prevent this is to anonymize the own ip address, when attending the networks as node. A popular and secure why is using the TOR network, that leads you through different layers of the tor-network before accessing the target website. The ip address changes within each layer and makes it impossible to trace back the actual ip address of the sending computer. Often used by Bitcoin users, it is still not standard feature of the software itself which leads to a high risk for unaware users. In the future the security and in particular the privacy of the crypto-currencies will become a important discussion point, when not only exchanges will be a target of criminals but also privat users itself are not longer privatized behind the blockchain network. Some projects are already working on this problem searching for the best solutions in anonymization the blockchain and its users for a greater security. DeepOnion implemented the tor-network as a standard feature which makes it possible to access the network without having the risk of getting tracked down by anybody. With the upcoming DeepSend also the transactions itself will become untraceable that will give the privacy back to the user. Haven't joined [DeepOnion](https://deeponion.org/?ref=1042860) yet? titleDeepOnion Technology: What is a Zero-Knowlegde protocol 1/2
bodyIf you read the DeepOnion whitepaper, you saw that its multi-layered security model also includes a Zero-Knowledge protocol layer. I want to give a an explanation what this exactly means and what advantages it brings to the DeepOnion blockchain. In the first part I will give you an overview which concept is behind the Zero-Knowledge protocol. The Zero-Knowledge protocol or proof is a method where person A convinces person B, that a specific statement is true without giving a "real" proof nor revealing any information regarding the statement. E.g. person A says he has access to a magic door and he wants person B to believe and verifies it. The simplest way to make person B believe him would be that person A enters the magic door while person B is watching him. In this case person B has the proof that person A speaks the truth, that he has access to the magic door. But this proof brings also the risk along, that somebody else could watch them and get access to the magic door. To prevent this and protect the secret of entering the magic door the Zero-Knowledge proof is needed.
![144px-Zero_knowledge_cave_1.svg.png](https://steemitimages.com/DQmdMX5muzSHovcQkZTrG5zj17HHdKMfkoACNoyQgzU33FX/144px-Zero_knowledge_cave_1.svg.png)
The image above shows the a cave, where the magic door is shown as a purple line. When entering the cave there a two ways to get to the magic door. Person B, the verifier of person A's statements, waits at the point 4 while person A enters the cave and decides to go either way 1 or way 2 to get to the magic door. When he reaches the door person A enters the caves and goes to point 3. He doesn't know which way person B chose. Now he wants person A to come back to point 3 using a specific way. If person A has lying and can't enter the magic door he has 50% chance that he chose the same way person B now wants him to come back. If he can enter the magic door he can for sure take the way person B wants him to take. If this experiment gets repeated a several times and person A's statement is true, person A will always come back the way person B wants him to come. In the other case the chance will be only about 50%. Using this method person A can believe and verify person B's statement without having a real proof and without any information gets exposed. This protocol can also used in blockchain technology making transactions more private and secure. In the next part I will show you what advantages the Zero-Knowledge protocol will bring to the DeepOnion blockchain. Haven't joined [DeepOnion](https://deeponion.org/?ref=1042860) yet? Do it now! titleBlockchain-Project of 2018: DeepOnion
body### People say 2018 is the year of altcoins. I say it's the year of DeepOnion. # 2018 is only a few days old, but you can already tell what project is going to dominate this year in the cryptocurrency area. Today DeepOnion published its whitepaper, which introduces a new era of community driven blockchain projects. Started only a few months ago DeepOnions community already became one of the largest communities on Bitcointalk. It's own forum counts already almost 10,000 supporters with more than 300,000 posts discussing the future of the anonymous asset Onion. The targets of 2018 are now set and promise to make DeepOnion one of the biggest gainer in this year. This includes the development of * Mobile Wallet for Android * Mobile Wallet for iOS * VoteCentral * DeepSend * Implementation of Zero Knowledge Protocol * Support of Smart Contracts You want to know more? Read the [whitepaper](https://deeponion.org/White-Paper.pdf) and [join us](https://deeponion.org/?ref=1042860). ![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmeHYTCx9xC3suD3RQL9tMuUp4LKrCWzFYaG5oVE3cXET9/grafik.png) If you haven't joined the project yet, feel free to visit [DeepOnion](https://deeponion.org/?ref=1042860). The airdrops will continue until end of April 2018. Yes, airdrop. No ICO, just a free distribution via airdrop. ### [Airdrop application](https://deeponion.org/community/apply.php?ref=1042860)

titleWhy a single coin is not touched by the bitcoin correction
bodySince yesterday a little bitcoin correction has been introduced. After a peak of over 11000 USD the first major sells were triggered and dragged down the price to 9000 USD. It's in the altcoins nature, that fast bitcoin dips also bring down the prices of altcoins. The result is a massive price decline in the whole crypto currency world. It's surprising that one coin seems to be spared from this. It's name is DeepOnion. In the following I want to elaborate the reasons why Onion maintains to stabilize the current price. The recent weeks show a specific pattern of the Onion buy and sell behavior on Cryptopia. The growing attraction towards DeepOnion led in an increasing demand of Onions while the sell depth wasn't touched. The competition for the rare Onions in sell orders continued in an increasing Onion price. In this stadium the price reached 1 Dollar triggered the sell border for some people. The sell depth accumulated even though it still didn't balanced with the buy orders. Since the break of the dollar border happened one day before the airdrop, it seems natural that many people still waited for selling to prevent breaking the "No Move"-period. https://deeponion.org/community/attachments/upload_2017-11-30_15-29-56-png.31029.png According to this assumption the demand in selling should have increased on the following days. The volume graph can confirm. In this stadium the price touched even the 1,5 Dollars and result in a stronger flood of sell orders that compensated the buy depth. The volume peak in this cycle was reached and the price stabilized. To summarize this we can see a natural cycle of market behavior: 1. Increasing buy orders 2. Competing of buy orders leds to higher buy orders; the price raises. 3. The higher price triggers more sell orders. 4. The buy depth gets compensated; price stabilizes. What is this telling us for the future? In the altcoin market the altcoin price should decline facing a bitcoin dip like the one we are experiencing now. Nevertheless the Onion price is overall untouched by the rest of the market. The reason is the introduction of a new cycle: The sellers of the current price are satisfied. Fulfilled sell orders don't result in new sell orders. This leads currently in a shrinking sell depth while it seems that buy orders are still not satisfied buy the recent sell period. The market starts to unbalance again, the competition in buying onions is getting stronger. https://deeponion.org/community/attachments/upload_2017-11-30_15-29-26-png.31027.png As Onion holders this is good news, because bitcoin dip is compensated by the high Onion demand. It also holds out an another price raise in the future. If Bitcoin recovers an increased Onion price of 2 Dollars is definitively conceivable. At this price sell orders will probably start to compensate the demand again and cycle can start again.
