      "body": "I've decided that I'm going to start posting about some projects that I've undertaken in the past and as I go, especially those that I feel would be most helpful to folks.\n\nThe first focuses on a problem many of us have to deal with as homeowners - water.  A lot of people have trouble with water in their basements or crawl spaces and there are some relatively simple steps you can take to relieve some common issues.  It's amazing to me the number of homes that have gutters but the water coming from the downspouts is deposited right next to the house - basically guaranteeing that it will enter into your house!  \n\nAs a general guideline, you should try to extend gutters around 10 feet or 3 meters away from your house.  Depending on the grade of your property, this should allow the water to migrate away.  While this is quick, cheap and effective it can also be unsightly and take up space.\n\nMy personal preference is to take this a step further.  In my previous and current homes, I have worked to put the downspout extensions underground and farther away from the house, eventually coming to the surface via pop-up drain cover.  This is costs $100 - $200 and can be done in a weekend (if you’re a motivated digger)!\n\n### Supplies:\n- Triple Wall Drain Pipe (4” x 10’) \n     - These are great because they’re not as tough and expensive as regular PVC drains.  They are easy to cut and are resistant to frost.\n     - I used solid pipe for the majority of my drain but in areas where the ground is very flat, I installed perforated pipe with a porous sleeve to allow groundwater to enter.\n- Selection of 4” PVC connectors and couplings (you will likely need 45-degree and 90-degree).\n- 4” pop-up (picture credit: Bobvila.com)\n![popup.png](https://steemitimages.com/DQme7zteyAhGmMFFEu8mQBA3bwZv72LYpeFrqRjy7hzwHtd/popup.png)\n- PVC glue (optional)\n- 4” downspout connector (matched with the size of your downspout)\n- Hacksaw to cut the pipes\n- Spade to dig the trench!\n\n### Procedure:\n- Plan your trench to connect as many downspouts as possible - consider the the size of your roof as you don't want to overwhelm a 4\" pipe. This isn’t really necessary as you can access them from downspout connectors.\n- Dig a trench roughly 12\"- 18\" deep and 4\" = 6\" wide. \n- Ensure that there is a downhill grade from the downspout to the popup.  It doesn’t need to be steep - I would estimate that a 10’ pipe would drop 1” - 2”.  \n- Where the popup will be placed, dig down an additional 12” and put a bag of sand in there.  If the popup doesn’t already have a drain hole in the bottom, drill one out.  The reason for this is that any water that collects in the popup will drain in the sand below.  This is essential in the winter to avoid freezing water blocking the popup.\n- Once the trench is dug, rough fit everything in place and double check the downhill grade.  You can even run some water with a hose to double check - don’t worry about leaking around the joints as they will effectively be sealed once covered in dirt.       "body": "Growing up in the 80's in the UK, there were no shortages of great movies and cartoons to watch (at least looking back)!  With that in mind, I've been cherry picking various movies and shows for my own kids to watch and they absolutely love them!  It's fun pairing a little nostalgia with seeing my kids react to 30-year-old styles and technology.  What's amazing is how they don't really think it's a big deal because they just accept everything as-is with no preconceived ideas. This turned out to be super easy and very rewarding, with us in absolute stitches most of the time!\n\nAnyway, we're going to make efforts to do some future episodes to 'Cops and Robbers' but in the meantime, here's the basic steps to building your first stop motion video:\n\n## Basic Steps\n- We used lego but of course you could use any props/dolls/toys etc\n- Pick some characters and build some props for the set\n- Decide on a simple storyline and do some practice runs\n- Download a free stop motion app.  I use Android and after messing with a few, really liked [Stop Motion Studio](https://www.cateater.com/stopmotionstudio/)  \n- Practice briefly with the app to get used to it but to get there quickly, select 'New Project' and then select the camera icon at the top right. This will allow you to take pictures of each frame and once done, the video will be automatically created.\n- You can add a a soundtrack or effects within the app but we found it easier to move to a computer for this. This turned out to be super easy and very rewarding, with us in absolute stitches most of the time!\n\nAnyway, we're going to make efforts to do some future episodes to 'Cops and Robbers' but in the meantime, here's the basic steps to building your first stop motion video:\n\n## Basic Steps\n- We used lego but of course you could use any props/dolls/toys etc\n- Pick some characters and build some props for the set\n- Decide on a simple storyline and do some practice runs\n- Download a free stop motion app.  I use Android and after messing with a few, really liked [Stop Motion Studio](https://www.cateater.com/stopmotionstudio/)  \n- Practice briefly with the app to get used to it but to get there quickly, select 'New Project' and then select the camera icon at the top right. This will allow you to take pictures of each frame and once done, the video will be automatically created.\n- You can add a a soundtrack or effects within the app but we found it easier to move to a computer for this.  I saved the file and then use Microsoft Movie Maker (you may need to download a free copy of Microsoft Essentials to do this).\n\n## Microsoft Movie Maker\n- Load the video and then select 'Add Narration'\n- We found it easier to create this in sections so that we were only doing small bits at a time.  One thing we discovered was that you cannot overlay multiple tracks within the same session/project.  \n- To add additional tracks i.e. the car sounds along with speech, you need to save the video and then close the current project.  Load the video with the audio track that you just created and then you can add another.  We ended up having to build 3 tracks.\n\nHave a crack at it and just enjoy the time with your kids :)",

      "body": "It's amazing how I've only been involved in the crypto space for about 18 months now - knowing what I know and how much I 'could' have had is obviously something we can all relate to.  At the same time, without looking at charts it's pretty mind boggling how early this is in relative terms.  I work within technology and while you can't avoid Bitcoin in headlines now, I know of only one other person who is investing in the space (and I convinced him to).  \n\nThree months ago, I was the butt of many jokes at the lunch table when I would argue the case for crypto and how the blockchain is going to revolutionize the world.  Some of my harshest critics have now confided that they have converted their first USD and are excited to learn more about how it works.\n\nNow...this also confirms my suspicions that there are many people who are throwing everything they've got into this market and are scared of missing out (FOMO).  This is what makes things a little more volatile right now but this doesn't phase me.  My new favorite acronym is BTFD...Buy The F&#$ing Dip!\n\nSo - why am I so confident in this whole thing?  The circles I keep are much more libertarian in their views and so the idea of governments and controlling organizations aren't a positive thing.  With that said, the fact that the vast majority of people I speak with, from all backgrounds are also talking with that tone in mind speaks to a shift.  It's faint right now but it's there.  Crypto is one way that people are going to feel like they are taking some control back - that a free market might actually exist.\n\nI fully expect many of these ventures to crash and burn - just think about search engines in the 90's.  How many survived?  That doesn't mean that none did - there are so many irons in this particular fire that it's impossible this doesn't succeed!\n\nI'm just excited to have something new and vast to learn about.  \n\nAnyway, that's my 2 cents!",

I'm going to write up more about my observations in 2017 but in short, last year was one of the most tumultuous ones in my recent memory!  Not always in a bad way - just consider what a year has done for the crypto and blockchain space.  Politically and socially speaking, there seems to be a real 'identify crisis' going on and the old statist way of doing things is being challenged more so than ever before.
