titleLiving in a post-truth world
bodyPeople were already writing articles about post-truth back in 2017, a year after Trump came into power in the United States. Now in 2021, the fact that so many around the world (but mostly North America) have decided it is OK to believe in nonsense and live in their own version of reality is really astonishing. The following cartoon is taken from the linked article. There has always been the fringe element of society that believes in crazy things, but since Trump, the populist who normalized blatant and outrageous lying, it has become acceptable and even popular to do so. If you have ever spent any time perusing radical right-wing message boards like 4chan.org/pol/, then you will know how much nuttiness is circulating and how occasionally it makes it to the mainstream media. I remember watching as the finer points of the whole Pizzagate conspiracy were worked out over many threads on 4chan, eventually leading to become widely known and causing one man to enter the pizza joint with a gun demanding answers. If you do not know about the conspiracy, it basically stated that a child prostitution ring was being run out of the basement of Comet Ping Pong Pizza in Washington, DC by those evil liberals. This was all based on theories made up from the leaked email between John Podesta and Hillary Clinton. Vague references to types of pizza were made in one email, which lead to conspirators saying that it was coded language for child sex crimes. Over time, more and more silly and far-fetched "evidence" was found until it became "truth" for certain gullible groups. A lot of the various crazy conspiracies in the last few years are based on posts from an anonymous forum poster named Qanon. Many of these ideas have made it out to the right-wing mainstream media and picked up by Trump supporters, conspiracy lovers, and fundamentalist religious folk. It was particularly amusing to see a lot of these people claim that they never even heard of Qanon and it was made up by the liberal media. Ignorance of the sources of the conspiracies you believe in does not make the source fictitious. In fact, the liberal media were quite late to the game in reporting about Qanon. Not suprisingly, Qanon seems to have gone completely silent after Trump lost the 2020 election. This has not deterred the nutty masses from continuing on with the post-truth movement. Everything is becoming politicized. Here is a short list of nonsense that conspiracy minded people currently like to believe: * Trump won the 2020 election, but it was stolen from him * Trump will be re-inaugurated any day now (just 2 more weeks, lol) * Trump is secretly still the shadow president * Covid is just the flu * The covid vaccine has nanotech/5G, is magnetic, will change your DNA, will affect your fertility, or will kill you * The earth is actually flat (seriously, this movement is growing) Signs that someone is heading for conspiracy land and ignorant political thought if they are not there yet: * Being suspicious of institutes of higher learning * Being suspicious of scientists and statistics * Using the word "liberal" as a slur * Calling people who are human rights advocates "social justice warriors" * Claiming there is no such thing as systemic racism * Claiming that Jews secretly run everything (but yet are somehow inferior humans) * Believing in the "deep state" (surprise, it really just means Jews) * Masks do nothing to prevent Covid spread and are an assault on freedom * Vaccination does nothing to prevent Covid spread is an assault on freedom * Forced vaccination is like Nazi experimentation on Jews (equating these is extremely ignorant) Many wonder how things have gotten to this point. I have my own theory on that. I think with the advent of easy and global access to information via the Internet over the last two decades, society is being exposed to other cultures and forms of thought. It is no longer that easy to cling to old religious beliefs and simple worldviews. Somehow, a significant portion of society is unable to handle this and is rebelling by being part of the current anti-science, post-truth movement. It lets them retain some sense of power and camaraderie in a world they secretly know is much more complicated than their worldview previously allowed. Religions teach individuals to "just have faith,” something that I personally previously thought was fairly harmless, but it could end up being our undoing. Change and progress are extremely difficult for some people, so they label it "evil" and act accordingly, no matter the reality. I do not think this is the only reason for our current situation, but certainly a significant one. Now, the extreme societal divide is slowly leading us towards something... perhaps revolution, perhaps war? As Isaac Asimov famously said, "Violence is the last refuge of the incompetent." This is why I am a huge advocate of free public education as well as the teaching of critical thinking skills and human empathy, which are sorely lacking in today's world. I can only hope our children can cast off this silly nonsense and steer humanity back to a stable course.

titleMadbyte News - August 1, 2020
bodyOne Bitcoin, as of the writing of this newsletter, is worth over $11,000 USD. It is only the second time in history that it has closed the month over that. This past month also saw a surge in the value of several altcoins. The news of Cardano (ADA) releasing a hard fork has caused it to push to new YTD highs. The large amounts of money going into DeFi (decentralized finance), mainly being built on the Ethereum blockchain, are in turn giving high returns to related tokens. ETH (Ethereum's gas) itself has gone up in value by about 25-30% in July. Since this bullish upward swing has started, many in the crypto community have turned bullish. How will August fare? Madbyte token, MADX, is now available on the Saturn Exchange. It is a DEX (decentralized exchange). Visit https://www.saturn.network/exchange/ETH/order-book/madx or you can access the same DEX with MADX/ETH pairing via our own domain: https://madcap.exchange/. Our trading area called MadTrade, in the MadcapX.com members platform, will now be open to all tiers to use. The buy and sell order expiry times have been extended for all tiers. If you are looking for a more traditional exchange than a DEX or what our platform offers, try https://tradecoinx.com. All MadcapX members are now able to buy BTC and other cryptos directly using fiat money such as USD, EURO, or CAD. The BTC purchase defaults directly to your MadVault wallet though you can change the address and have the Bitcoin sent to any BTC wallet address. The transactions are secure and are handled by Transak. New to Madbyte? Signup on MadcapX.com, login and go to your profile to add some more info to your profile. When you save, you will get 1 MADX token as a new user, which automatically makes you a tier-one level member. You are now able to use our trading platform to buy more MADX and move to a higher tier level. All the best, Madbyte Team Madbyte.com

titleMadbyte News - July 1, 2020
bodyToday we are enabling a new feature that allows members to buy and sell Madbyte tokens within the MadCapX.com platform. It is being released in beta for members that are tier 8 or higher. This allows us to beta test it with a wider group before releasing it to all tier levels. Initially, there will only be a MADX.1K/BTC pairing with possibly a few more added in the future. Since we do not want people trading MADX in too small of quantities, we have decided to create minimums of 1000 MADX trades (and only in chunks of 1000 MADX). So, 1000 MADX equals 1 MADX.1K. We have implemented order expiry times to keep the trading page as clean as possible. The higher tier level you are, the longer your orders will remain listed. There are no trading fees. Fees only come into play on our system when you withdraw to an external wallet. Once the trading system is all done and out of beta, you will start seeing more information related to a new website we are working on, [Madxgames.com](https://madxgames.com).

titleMadbyte News - June 1, 2020
bodyThis past month the MadCapX membership website had a successful change related to it's tier levels. Gone are the 7 levels starting at a required 8000 to 2.5 million MADX holdings. Membership now starts from 1 MADX token and continues way past the previous 2.5 million. Your Madcap level will automatically change as you add more internal holdings or specify more external holdings. Higher levels will occasionally have more options. For instance, in the coming month, higher levels will get the new feature we've been working on first. So those of you who are in the higher levels should look out for that upcoming new addition. ![nextlevel.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmU75QgexWFgfMshuEoXZj9LyckUS2yD4XLkwpgm4wQoZD/nextlevel.jpg) MadCapX has been the membership platform that Madbyte considers our base for the crypto investor that we will continue to build onto. In 2020, a new platform will be built that relates to a whole different industry but will still use our Madbyte token, MADX. We will share more about this in a later newsletter. Bitcoin value has continued to hover in the $9000 USD range over the last few weeks. If you are interested in trading cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, there are many large exchanges such as Coinbase, Binance, Kraken, and many others you should look into. If you are interested in trading Bitcoin through your broker or within your retirement account, check out symbols GBTC or QBTC. Until next time, buy some dips and sell those humps, Madbyte Team

titleMadbyte News - May 1, 2020
bodyI am the main developer for Madbyte.com / Madcapx.com and will start posting our monthly news here on Steemit. I write a portion of these news updates. --- Madbyte News - May 1, 2020 The mining reward for the leading cryptocurrency, Bitcoin, will be halving around May 12th. This is the third time this will have happened. The reward started at 50 Bitcoin and dropped to 25 in 2012, 12.5 in 2016, and now to 6.25 BTC. These halving events, in turn, has caused Bitcoin value to increase historically. Price during the first halving was $12 per BTC and 150 days later it had gone up to $127. In 2016 the halving price was at $650 and now in 2020. ![goldenbull.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmYrtwz75H5ixknQj4Yv2GWTVB5J6r8WsrYsww5o1ddV3W/goldenbull.jpg) Bitcoin will continue to be extremely volatile and even more so as we have this perfect storm of events from money printing, halving, and the worldwide lockdown. A few weeks ago we were at lows of $3800 or so and now highs of $9000. The speculation in the stock-to-flow model has BTC heading into the $100,000 area in this next 4-year cycle. It seems unreal but so did today's current value in 2012 and 2016, yet here we are. So if you want to speculate, there is always time to see if 10x returns are available. Though when you speculate you can also lose substantial amounts. We will be expanding the MadCapX tier levels sometime this month. Tier levels will be number-based and no longer have names. For existing members, you will be transferred to the matching new tier at the corresponding reward level. You may ask how many tier levels there will be... but that is a secret that can only be found out by leveling up. We are also changing it so that you will no longer hold multiple tier levels, but instead have just one which is automatically calculated and checked every day from the total in your vault and listed holdings. You will be able to list external holding wallet addresses with at least 1000 MADX or higher. Rewards will continue to be given out on the first of every month. During the month, do not worry if the panel stops working and you see the message "MadcapX is currently down for maintenance." as that just means we have temporarily turned off functionality for members while system changes are being performed. We will probably be taking the system down multiple times for varying time spans. If you come across any issues, please inform us via our contact form or in Discord. Happy investing, Madbyte team

titleShould you drive for UberEats?
bodyAre you thinking about driving for UberEats to make some quick extra cash? I've done a tiny bit of regular Uber driving and a bit more of UberEats driving. Regular Uber driving is not for everyone. Apart from the usual, requiring a clean driving record, a newer car, and living in a city that offers Uber services, you'll need to enjoy continually meeting new people and engaging in chit-chat while being keenly aware of your driving. Regular Uber driving is not for me. UberEats driving, on the other hand, requires only picking up food from a restaurant and dropping it off to a customer (usually at their front door). Just delivering food from point A to B before it gets cold and a few cheerful greetings. Income equates to a bit above minimum wage (or maybe more if you can optimize your routine) once all your expense factors are considered. ![Uber Eats Driver](https://vidberg.com/pics/blog/uber-eats-delivery-1024.jpg) The Pros Work any day you like at any time you like. Of course, lunch and dinner times are ideal for maximizing your income. Do just one delivery a day or do thirty, it's completely up to you. Weekly payouts happen every Monday directly to your bank account (and the cash is usually accessible to you by Wednesday). It is also possible to get paid right away if you sign up for their [Flex Pay](https://www.uber.com/en-CA/drive/resources/flexpay/) option. No dealing with money exchange as all payments and tips are handled within the UberEats app. You do not need to spend time/money to keep your car as clean since customers won't be looking inside and will rarely care about the outside. No stress from making navigation mistakes as nobody is watching you. Many times, I have missed a turn or have a bit of difficulty finding the customer, but it doesn't really matter as long as the food gets delivered in the end. No chit-chatting with customers if that's not your thing. Although, I would advise providing a friendly greeting as you hand over the food. You get to learn about new places to dine at. I know I've personally been introduced to a few local places I didn't even know existed that had items I want to try out. The Cons You are doing more work for usually less cash (than doing regular Uber driving). Each trip requires you to get out of your vehicle, stand in line to wait for food to be prepared and/or packaged (more often than not, it will NOT be ready when you arrive). Get out of the car again to hand the food to the customer. When you are first starting out, you will have some difficulty finding parking for the occasional restaurant (especially downtown locations). With time and experience, you will get to know all the popular UberEats restaurants in your service area and this will no longer be an issue. Most trips are short, as this is food delivery and the product needs to reach the customer without getting cold. Short trips equate to less money per trip. Although, this may be a positive for you if you don't want to make longer trips. Wear and tear on your car is to be expected, but this is the case with any type of delivery job. You will also be paying for your gas, so keep track of it. If you are up for it, you can opt to do bicycle deliveries if supported in your service area. In essence, getting paid to exercise. When doing bike deliveries, the system will prioritize assigning the shortest deliveries with smaller orders to you. Some people don't like their car smelling of food, but I personally don't mind this. Hints You should get an insulated delivery bag or two. I have one cube-shaped bag for most deliveries and a larger pizza bag for pizza. I also carry a printed out sign in the car which says "[UberEats - Driver on delivery - Please allow 10 minutes](https://vidberg.com/pics/blog/ondelivery.jpg)" just in case I need to do some questionable parking (which I really try to avoid). Some drivers will put in the extra effort to send a "Got your food, heading you way now" message to the customer once they are leaving the restaurant as well as a thank-you message after successful delivery. I put [vidberg.com/delivery](https://vidberg.com/delivery) in my profile blurb just in case customers check me out it gives them a bit of extra information. All this is done to try and increase the chance of getting a tip from a satisfied customer. Verdict If you really need to make some money quickly, have a car, and don't want to provide Uber taxi service, UberEats is the way to go. There are other food delivery gig economy companies out there as well like Skip The Dishes, DoorDash, GrubHub, Postmates and possibly others. I can't compare these as I only have experience with Uber. If you decide to sign up, please use my referral code [dsac6ue](http://uberdriver.isfoundhere.com) which gets me and you extra bonuses. Safe driving!

titleOver one year of cannabis
bodyI have never smoked tobacco and I do not drink alcohol (at least not more than maybe a couple of times a year and even then I never get drunk). I have never done illegal drugs in my life and probably never will, but once cannabis was legalized here in Canada I wanted to try it. I had researched a bunch before taking the plunge and I figured if it wasn't physically addictive and many people have anecdotal stories of how great it is, what will it hurt to try? So here I am, a little over a year later since my first experimentation and I must say I don't really understand why it was ever illegal in the first place. I have been regularly vaping dried flower cannabis in the evenings every weekend since November of 2018. Here is a picture of my collection of empty cannabis containers. ![Cannabis containers](https://vidberg.com/pics/blog/cannabis-20191026-1024.jpg) The Cons For some people, smoking/vaping/ingesting cannabis can be a terrible experience. There is no way to know how you will react to it until you try it, which is why I think a lot of doctors are not keen to promote it. Medical drugs normally have very expected and consistent effects, whereas cannabis can be hit or miss. You might experience an increased heart rate and extreme anxiety or a panic attack. You might develop cyclic vomiting syndrome. If you are already prone to mental disorders, it may trigger schizophrenia. Getting 'very high' can also result in strong feelings of dissociation. Out of all these negative symptoms, I've only experienced elevated heart rate and dissociation (and for me, these only have come about from vaping strong 27% THC flower and taking edibles at the same time). Smoking anything is still very bad for your lungs. Vaping much less so, which is why I vape. I keep my vape temperature around the 190-degree Celcius mark which is deemed the safest to still get the THC/CBD while avoiding the possible carcinogenic chemicals that come from going over 200 degrees. Combustion happens around 230 degrees. Edibles don't have this issue but it can affect the liver in the long run. Over time, cannabis will have a detrimental effect on your brain. It advances aging and can hinder development in youth. It can cause memory issues, but usually only while it's still in your system. For me, starting in my late 40's, I feel it's not a concern at all. Although cannabis isn't physically addictive, I can understand how it can be mentally addictive. I find that I do look forward to vaping on the weekends but I also don't feel an uncontrollable urge to do so. Perhaps if I were a daily user it would be more difficult to abstain. Even though I don't spend too much on this habit as 3.5 grams of flower can last me months, I will probably be taking a longer break soon as it's just not in our budget right now to keep at it. The Pros The stress relief and feeling of happiness and/or euphoria are tremendous. This effect on its own can be the only reason you need for enjoying weed. I remember the first time I got high and what an eye-opening experience it was in terms of being able to get these almost inexplicable feelings. It can be equivalent to having a religious experience. Time seems to move at a different speed. I would equate it to being in a waking dream state. You tend to get grand ideas or thoughts. You sometimes think you've figured out some great mystery or gained valuable insight into something. The problem is that you usually forget these things unless you make notes right at the time. If you do make notes, looking at them when sober, you might realize, yeah, that doesn't make sense. So while it can boost creativity and allow you to explore grand ideas, don't expect it to always be coherent in this reality. Stoned 'reality' is a different place and time. Many people claim that THC and/or CBD really helps alleviate bodily pains. Personally, I have used it to relieve lower back pain and very nasty knee pain. I find that while it does indeed melt away pain, you also need to use a lot of it. It also doesn't actually fix anything, just masks it and makes you forget about it for a while. If you have trouble sleeping, some strains can be great for making you sleepy. You'll sleep so deeply and feel refreshed upon waking. Although, I find it does also give vivid dreams. Depending on whether you like that or not, it can be considered a positive or a negative. Cannabis has been scientifically proven to help with symptoms associated with multiple sclerosis, paralysis and cancer treatment. It can help treat appetite loss. Listening to music becomes wondrous. Watching movies becomes more enjoyable. Funny things are even funnier. Food tastes better. All the stereotypical things you hear are absolutely true. I also never forget what temperature to set my oven to when I make pizza (420, my dudes). Obtaining Cannabis Legally If you are in Ontario, you can visit a local cannabis store if you have one in your area or order online at [https://ocs.ca](https://ocs.ca). To start, a single gram of flower (for around $10) between the 10% to 15% THC range and some rolling papers is all you need. That will let you roll a few joints and find out soon enough if it's something you want to pursue. Try getting between 20% to 25% THC flower the next time. The next step after that, in my opinion, would be to buy a dry herb vaporizer. Your flower will last a lot longer and instead of discarding the used bud (called ABV), you can accumulate it and use it in baking or stuff it in empty gel capsules (use these as edibles). Be careful, edibles come on slowly and hit hard for hours afterward. If you want to get even more hardcore, start looking at cannabis oil vape pens and cartridges. So Many Choices You will come across a lot of marketing around Indica vs. Sativa and all the various terpene profiles. I find that certain strains do not always produce the effects that the marketing claims and instead you need to sample many strains to find what works most consistently for the type of effect you are after. My favorite strains so far have been [Pink Kush](https://www.leafly.ca/strains/pink-kush) and [Sensi Star](https://www.leafly.ca/strains/sensi-star). If you don't like the skunky smell that most weed has, look for terpene profiles that are lowest in myrcene. Verdict I'm glad I gave it a chance. If you are at all curious, I would recommend giving it a try. Just remember to start slow and know that if you do happen to be one of those people that has a bad experience, it will pass and you won't die. If you like it, congratulations, you just found something magical.

titleTry out Openbazaar
bodyYou may have heard of the decentralized open source market place called Openbazaar, but probably have not tried it out. I only say this from my own experience after having a number of items listed for sale on the platform since the beginning of the year. I Have not had a single nibble of interest from any buyers. This leads me to believe that there just are not enough people in the cryptocurrency sphere to enable a healthy marketplace to exist at this time. You are still much better off going to Amazon, eBay, Craigslist or Kijiji. I will continue to keep some items listed just to try and support the platform, but I do not expect that I will ever get a sale. Check out [my store](https://openbazaar.com/store/QmV1uq2d72rGCbTTsnzjggJYkPRRcoRFtSynF77H4cBAUs). ![MarketPlace](https://vidberg.com/pics/steemit/dmarketplace-1024.jpg) The concept of Openbazaar is great! Grab the software (see link at bottom of this post), start up an account and explore other peoples items for sale or put up some of your own. If you create a store with items, you will stay online as long as you keep the software running. If you stop running the software, your store will eventually disappear from the platform cache, so it is important to keep your software running if you want people to find your store. Nobody can shut down your account, store or ability to buy/sell. You may be unlisted from the official Openbazaar search (called OB1) if you or your items get flagged, but that only removes you from that search platform. You will still be visible on anybody else's search platform and anybody with the know-how can run one. In fact, there was a more popular search platform at one time but it appears to have disappeared and the community is waiting for someone to set up another uncensored one. At the moment it is a bit difficult to search for those questionable or blatantly illegal items, but they are there if you know where to look. You can choose from Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Litecoin or Zcash as a method of payment. There are no fees and you choose to use a moderator when buying/selling to avoid being scammed. A moderator basically holds payments in escrow until a purchased product has been received, at which point they will release the payment to finalize the transaction. Anybody can apply to be a moderator (and can choose if their service is free or has a fee). Moderators have to maintain a reputation score as well in hopes of weeding out the bad ones. While Openbazaar already started in 2016 and are on a stable version 2 of their software, it is still far from being a good and complete experience. For example, useful tools for store owners are missing. There are no stats of any kind. You have no idea if anybody is even looking at your items or can find your store. Also, as mentioned before, there is a huge lack of third-party search engines. Try it out yourself. Download the software, it is [available for Windows, Mac and Linux](https://openbazaar.org/download/), and see what you think.

I'm writting to you simply because I'm trying to help @machnbirdsparo to promote his latest post (he is a good friend of mine and very supportive Steemit user). titleLeaving my career
bodyI officially spent my last day sitting in a full-time office job back in July of 2014, after which I tried for several years to get a small business (with a partner) to become profitable. This ultimately failed and I am now just doing occasional freelance jobs or projects I really want to do. I have not even attempted to get back into the regular workplace anymore as I was already feeling past my prime as a developer back in 2014. Now in my late 40's, I really do not wish to even try to compete against the younger programmers. I just don't have it in me. Also, I've never really enjoyed the work environments that tech startups provide (I have only ever worked for startups). I did apply to a number of larger corporations early on and even got interviews at a few but was never chosen. As such, working for over 7 startups in my 25+ years as a coder / system admin / web application developer, the highest I ever saw my yearly salary go to was around CAD $55k. You have to understand that I have always had a problem with self-confidence and although every boss I've ever had has liked me fine (some really liked me), I've never been able to push to get those higher salaries that I've heard others in my area getting (CAD $80k plus). I let myself get taken advantage of way too much. I tend to have a workplace tolerance level (or burn-out level) of only about 3 years. ![Work Sucks](http://vidberg.com/pics/steemit/worksucks.jpg) When I was still back at my office job, I decided to go talk to a psychologist about my issues with work burn-out and they had me fill out a career assessment survey. The results came back as I expected, saying I should be a computer programmer (or something in the computer field). What I was hoping for was some insight into what else I could do. Apparently, not much. After years of sitting at a computer, I have also gained a lot of weight so most kinds of labour jobs are out. I am not a social person, which is why I got into IT in the first place, so sales or retail jobs are out. I'm not interested (and don't have the money) to retrain in some other professional field. > Relevant song by one of my favourite metal bands, Woods Of Ypres, from my hometown of Sault Ste. Marie: [Career Suicide](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W1ut1XIOIgg) Alas, this is all OK. I love my life right now. I work on little projects - only things I actually like working on. The only stress is not having that extra steady income stream and having to rely solely on the spouse in that department. I have taken on more of a househusband role with associated duties, which is fine by me. Going from 2 full-time salaries to only 1 is a difficult lifestyle adjustment, but do-able. You learn to cut expenses in everything. > Links to some relevant Reddit subs I enjoy: > [r/antiwork](https://www.reddit.com/r/antiwork/) > [r/LateStageCapitalism](https://www.reddit.com/r/LateStageCapitalism/) I often wonder how many others out there are like me that are over 40 and feel like you are in forced retirement? Have you given up on your career or finding full-time work? How do you get by without the steady income stream? What do you see yourself doing in the future?

Have you given up on your career or finding full-time work? How do you get by without the steady income stream? What do you see yourself doing in the future?",
