| body | Bitcoin is strongly bid today amid reports of institutional buying. Prices across global exchanges, as per CoinDesk's Bitcoin Price Index, were last seen trading at $14,951 levels. The cryptocurrency caught a bid wave at $13,687.54 (price at 17:00 UTC yesterday) and jumped to a six-day high of $15,393.97 earlier today. Notably, the news that Founders Fund (co-founded by high-profile investor Peter Thiel) has poured $15 million–$20 million into bitcoin (BTC) looks to have given a lift to prices of the number one cryptocurrency by market capitalization. As reported by CoinDesk, Founder Fund's entry into the bitcoin space is not surprising. Nevertheless, the news does underscore the rising level of interest among institutional investors and thus could have pushed up bitcoin prices. As per data source CoinMarketCap, the world's largest cryptocurrency has appreciated by 10 percent in the last 24 hours. Despite the retreat from the intraday high, the technical charts look constructive. Bitcoin chart The above chart (prices as per Coinbase) shows: Bitcoin followed the historical pattern: a sell-off from the record high of $19,891 (Dec. 17) ended around the 61.8 percent Fibonacci retracement level on Dec. 22 (marked by a circle). Bulls successfully defended the confluence of the upward sloping 50-day moving average and 50 percent Fibonacci retracement level ($12,701.55) over the weekend. A high-volume "falling wedge" reversal (bullish breakout). The relative strength index (RSI) has breached the descending trendline, favoring a further rise in BTC prices. A falling wedge is characterized by lower lows and lower highs with a contracting range. An upside break (as witnessed yesterday) indicates a bullish trend reversal – i.e. the sell-off from $19,891.99 (Dec. 17 high) has ended and the bulls have regained control. The pick up in volume yesterday indicates strong hands are at play. View The chart indicates that prices could revisit $18,000 in the short-run. However, the decline of the intraday high of $15,400 to $14,650 neutralizes the immediate outlook. A move above $15,400 in the next few hours would add credence to the bullish technical factors listed above and could yield a rally to $16,490 (Dec. 27 high). A violation there would expose resistance at $18,149.99 (Dec. 12 high). On the downside, only a close (as per UTC) below $12,701.55 (50 percent Fibonacci retracement) would abort the bullish view. |

| body | Swedish academic and medical doctor Hans Rosling’s death earlier this year at the age of 68 was a tragic loss for the data community. He inspired many into careers within data visualization by seeking to dispel the myth that data and information are inherently boring, once saying that, ’Having the data is not enough, I have to show it in ways people both enjoy and understand.’ It is partly his contribution that has seen data visualization recognized as an important feature within business. A recent Business2community survey of data professionals found that the data science skill with the highest correlation to project success was data mining and visualization tools. The discovery of novelty is a wonderful thing, but is entirely pointless to a business if decision makers can’t be convinced of its existence and take appropriate action. Data visualization is the best way of doing this, engaging decision makers with a visual narrative that leads them to the insight. It also shows the quality of the data, revealing if your dataset is incomplete by easily displaying where data is missing on the report, and whether it’s valid - with a quick, preliminary visualization on collected data showing trends that indicate problems in the complete data. Data visualization is constantly evolving, with the technology improving dramatically over the last decade. This year, we are set to see further advancements, with an extremely range of exciting new directions. We asked a number of experts what they thought would be the most significant trends in the field. Virtual Reality According to research firm IDC, the market for augmented and virtual reality is expected to grow from $5.2 billion in 2016 to $162 billion in 2020. This is being driven by tech companies like Facebook-owned Oculus, who are making great leaps in the consumer market. Immersive data visualization offers easier pattern recognition in big data sets and more intuitive data understanding. Unlike conventional data visualization models that rely on two axes in a spreadsheet, VR allows users to walk around and look at the data from multiple angles, comparing any number of different factors at the same time. VR works because it focuses your entire field of vision, allowing you to concentrate exclusively on the objective. In early experiments, researchers found that users who interacted with the data through VR reported better retention of perceived relationships within the data than when viewing it through two dimensional data visualization tools. The possibilities offered by VR are huge, and nowhere is it more important to businesses than data visualization.1 The naturalistic way it allows people to interact with virtual objects, the ability it affords individuals to experience the data through all senses - touch, sound, and even smell - mean that there are many opportunities yet to be explored, and data visualization companies should start preparing. Abon Chaudhuri, Sr. Applied Researcher, at Walmart Labs: ‘Recent progress in human-computer interaction (HCI) (with the support of computer vision and virtual reality) indicates that it is time to transform the way a user experiences a visualization. Multi-touch gestures, touchless interactions etc. are almost commonplace now. We are probably not far from a time when a person can actually walk into the projection of a 3D visualization (a holograph) and modify it.’ Doug Ireland, VP of Finance at Prezi: ‘In the longer term, immersive experiences like AR and VR. Data visualization is extremely relevant to immersive visual experiences. It makes no sense to communicate anything but the simplest data points in text or verbally in a virtual, richly visual environment.’ Mobile-first Visualisations The recent Intel’s IT Manager Survey found that IT managers expect 63% of all analytics to be done in real time, and those who fail to understand and act on data immediately risk losing their competitive advantage to someone who will. Data visualization for mobile is subsequently becoming increasingly important, with many data visualization vendors now either adapting desktop experiences to mobile formats, or taking a mobile-first approach to developing their technology. There have been a number of challenges in the past, with smartphone display space limited. Information needs to be presented more simply than on a desktop, so, rather than just translating a complex desktop view into a simpler mobile one, it is important to consider context. People also have big fingers that can’t necessarily navigate to every facet of a touchscreen, there are also many distractions. Designers are having to exploit gesture-based input as a result in order to help users easily navigate different views and interact with the data. Tableau, for one, has now launched support for device layouts with Tableau 10, and it is a field that is slowly being perfected as designers establish the difference from building visuals for desktop. Ken Cherven, Data Visualizations Specialist at GM: I believe the continued ability to capture information at close to real-time speed from a variety of sources will play a major role. In my experience, most of data visualization today is not functioning this way but is used more in the realm of taking traditional business metrics and making them more visually appealing. I think the future holds real opportunities for data visualization to capture many of the flows that occur within the daily life of a business, regardless of whether they take place on the web, via a call center, or through mobile devices, or even in the way a business processes transacts beyond the customer purview. Artificial Intelligence There are very few areas that AI is not going to impact, and data visualization is certainly going to be among the most important. The problem is that Big data is outgrowing the basic dashboards and human data scientists that did data visualization in the past. There is simply too much data and too many insights held within it waiting to be revealed. Machine learning and advanced statistical algorithms are now necessary to keep churning them out them, and automated data visualizations to represent the findings. Natural Language Generation (NLG) is essentially just a variation on data visualization, which can either work alongside or independently of visuals to make it easier to interpret the information. For example, in data intensive industries like finance, workers may have forty different graphs spread across a number of monitors. While these will likely have all the information necessary, it takes considerable human effort and time to unlock the insights they hold. NLG will compare the graphs and provide the worker with advice, explaining the analysis without the need of a highly skilled and expensive data expert. Michael White, an associate professor at Ohio State University, believes that this means NLG is finally on the precipice of entering the mainstream, arguing that, ‘There’s growing awareness that masses of data and visualizations are not really helpful if they can’t be explained and made relevant. I’d say the time has finally become ripe for natural language generation to have commercial success.’ Gabi Steele, Data Visualization Specialist at the Washington Post: I think AI (artificial intelligence) systems, machine learning, and emerging technology of this nature are likely to be most impactful to the field of data visualization given the immense dependence and correlation to visually comprehending mass amounts of data that these technologies can quickly process and work with. Abon Chaudhuri, Sr. Applied Researcher, at Walmart Labs: We must not forget the role AI can play in transforming this field. Wouldn't it be awesome if I only had to give the data and my question(s) to a program and let it choose the most effective visualization for my goal? Early work along this line is being published already. |

| body | Samsung Note 8 Infinity Display Video Leak Are you ready for everything the Galaxy Note 8 is going to bring with it? You can get yourself in the mood for the flagship phablet's upcoming launch by casting your eyes over the latest unofficial video and picture leaks to hit the web, showing what's claimed to be the front panel of the device. Posted to Chinese social network Weibo and picked up by Phandroid, the images and clips show the now-familiar, bezel-crushing curves of the Infinity Display, though in this case the size goes beyond even what the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus can offer. The Note 8 is expected to show up with a 6.3-inch or 6.4-inch display, to beat the 6.2-inch one on the Plus. We don't know too much about the leaker in this case so adjust your expectations accordingly, but the front display panels seem authentic enough to be real. It's no surprise that the Note 8 would follow the path of the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus, and it hints that the fingerprint sensor will once again be around the back of the device. From the same source we have what purports to be an official press image showing a rendered Galaxy Note 8, though in this Photoshop-enlightened times it's even more difficult to be certain about this one than the front panel leak. By all means check it out, but don't be shocked if it doesn't turn out to be genuine. It's also worth bearing in mind that the front panels you see in the videos and images above may be of a prototype design that Samsung has since modified or discarded. The company usually tests multiple versions of its handsets before deciding on a final design to take to the manufacturing process. We're expecting the Galaxy Note 8 to arrive in August or September to try and steal some of the thunder of the iPhone 8. The 6.3-inch or 6.4-inch screen is rumored to be rocking a full 4K resolution, while previous leaks have pointed to the phablet having display corners that are slightly less rounded than this year's flagship Galaxy smartphones. |

| body | The iPhone 8 is likely to be announced in September 2017, marking 10 years since the firm launched its first smartphone. However, one report claims that it might not be available to buy until the fourth quarter, noting that the iPhone 8 may be available in limited quantity only. A note by analyst Timothy Arcuri from Cowen and Company has added weight to this and claims that production could be delayed due to issues with its Touch ID sensor. Another report suggests the iPhone 8 may not arrive until 2018. A research Deutsche Bank, picked up by Business Insider, claims the smartphone won't make it onto shelves this year due to supply chain issues and "technical challenges". As if just to confuse matters more, Digitimes is reporting that mass production of the iPhone 8 is on schedule and that the smartphone will see a release in October. Price If it's anything like Apple's new MacBooks, next year's iPhone will be more expensive than this year's release, and some are claiming that the highest-spec model will be the first iPhone to cost more than $1,000. Rumoured specs - 5.8in 2.5D OLED edge-to-edge display - New design with an 'all-glass' construction - Wireless charging support - Apple A11 chip - Rear-facing Touch ID sensor - iOS 11 with improved Siri, P2P payments - Face-scanning technology - Vertical dual cameras on rear - Support for LTE speeds up to 450Mbps |

| body | The iPhone 8 is likely to be announced in September 2017, marking 10 years since the firm launched its first smartphone. Rumoured specs - 5.8in 2.5D OLED edge-to-edge display - New design with an 'all-glass' construction - Wireless charging support - Apple A11 chip - Rear-facing Touch ID sensor - iOS 11 with improved Siri, P2P payments - Face-scanning technology - Vertical dual cameras on rear - Support for LTE speeds up to 450Mbps |

| body | If you pay attention to what movies and television tell us, being in your 20s is supposed to be the best time of your life. But for many young professionals, questions about money, relationships and work can make things feel pretty complicated — and overwhelming. According to research by psychologists of the University of Greenwich and University of London, nearly 90 percent of millennials say they experienced an intense period of confusion and depression during this life stage. It's helpful to remember that some of the world's richest, most successful people have gone their own quarter life crises. Here are five successful people who struggled in their 20s, and the key lessons they took from the experience: 1. Mark Cuban Before Cuban became a billionaire entrepreneur, investor on ABC's "Shark Tank" or owner of the Dallas Mavericks, he was just another young man struggling to make it in business. He was living with five other guys in a three-bedroom apartment, working at a company that sold PC software. Mark Cuban, billionaire owner of the National Basketball Association's (NBA) Dallas Mavericks basketball team, speaks at the 2017 South By Southwest (SXSW) Interactive Festival at the Austin Convention Center in Austin, Texas, U.S., on Sunday, March 12, 2017. In his book "How to Win at the Sport of Business," Cuban describes being fired for "not telling anyone [he] was going to lunch to try to close a deal." But he learned from that setback. Besides encouraging him to become an entrepreneur and his own boss, it shaped his leadership style. "[My former boss] was my mentor, but not in the way you'd expect," Cuban writes. "Even now I think back to things he did, and I do the opposite." His best advice to young professionals? "Never stop learning," he says. "Never stop grinding. Never stop loving every single minute of your life." 2. Elon Musk The Tesla and SpaceX CEO faced a challenging time when he dropped out of Stanford University, where he had planned to pursue a Ph.D. in applied physics and materials science, after just two days. "It got to the start of the quarter at Stanford, so I had to make a decision, and I decided to go on deferment," he tells entrepreneur interview series Foundation. "I said I'd probably be back in six months, and [the chairman of the department] said he was probably never going to hear from me again. And he was correct." Tesla Motors Inc. He slept on the floor of an office, showered at a nearby YMCA and struggled to make ends meet. Still, he didn't abandon his entrepreneurial goals. He built Zip2, an online software company that allowed newspapers to publish their content online, and the big career risk soon paid off. The company was a success and Compaq bought it a deal valued at about $300 million. The experience taught him to not fear risks and to work harder than anybody else out there. 3. J.K. Rowling In her 20s, following the death of her mother, Rowling moved to Portugal and became an English teacher. There she met and married her husband. She suffered a miscarriage and later gave birth to a daughter, Jessica. But Rowling's marriage soon fell apart. J.K. Rowling Getty Images J.K. Rowling She moved back to the U.K, poor and severely depressed. "We're talking suicidal thoughts here, we're not talking, 'I'm a little bit miserable,'" Rowling tells Britain's Sunday Times. "Mid-twenties life circumstances were poor, and I really plummeted." She took a job teaching in Edinburgh, Scotland, and came up with the idea of a school for wizards and a character named Harry Potter. She developed the idea further, writing in every spare moment she had. After receiving "loads" of rejections from book publishers, she finally landed a deal for "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone." 4. Oprah Winfrey When Winfrey was 23, she was demoted from her job at Baltimore's WJZ-TV nightly news to a less-coveted morning spot. Oprah Winfrey Photo by Jemal Countess Oprah Winfrey "I had no idea what I was in for or that this was going to be the greatest growing period of my adult life," Winfrey said. "It shook me to my very core, and I didn't even know at the time that I was being shaken." It was a key turning point that led Winfrey to becoming the TV host the world knows her as today. 5. Steve Jobs Before Jobs started building Apple in a garage, he was a young adult looking for meaning in life. After one semester at Reed College, Jobs dropped out. He traveled to India to find purpose in his life, and experimented with psychedelic drugs. How to overcome your own quarter-life crisis: 1. Look at what has inspired you in the past Putting pen to paper could help you build your network, according to a best-selling author and career expert. Kelvin Murray/Getty Images Putting pen to paper could help you build your network, according to a best-selling author and career expert. Adam Poswolsky , who was broke and unemployed at 27, offers a key lesson in his book "The Quarter-Life Breakthrough." Poswolsky turned his crisis into a valuable career as a writer, speaker and millennial career expert, and says that looking at what has made you happy in the past could point in the right direction for your next career move. Examine what moments in your past defined and inspired you, he suggests. "Being able to articulate the defining moments that have shaped your life will help you get closer to realizing who you are and what your breakthrough is all about," he says. 2. Start a project that inspires you Business man Hero Images | Getty Images If you're frustrated and not sure what you should be doing with your life, forget trying to find your "one passion," says Jenny Blake, the co-creator of Google's career development program and author of "PIVOT: The Only Move That Matters Is Your Next One." "For some, the pressure to define a purpose or mission statement is stifling and causes much unnecessary angst," she writes. "I recommend people follow a project-based purpose," Blake tells CNBC. Having a "project-based purpose" means finding initiatives at work that excite you and make you feel like you're having an impact, she says. Alternatively, you could start a side project that will teach you valuable skills and give you a way to explore your interests. 3. Focus more on building healthy relationships and cultivating hobbies drse03089 Sean Drakes/LatinContent/Getty Images What you do outside of work is incredibly important to your career, Blake says. That's why she recommends everyone write his or her own formula for happiness. The exercise helps people see their life and career more holistically, she says. "What are the activities," she asks, "where if you were to get these done in a given day or week, takes you 80 percent of the way toward feeling great?" Once you have that list, write your ideal formula for happiness. For example, it could look like this: Happiness = Seeing a friend once a week + working out two times a week + going to bed by 10 p.m. + devoting 10 minutes each day to my side project. |

He was living with five other guys in a three-bedroom apartment, working at a company that sold PC software.\n\n\nMark Cuban, billionaire owner of the National Basketball Association's (NBA) Dallas Mavericks basketball team, speaks at the 2017 South By Southwest (SXSW) Interactive Festival at the Austin Convention Center in Austin, Texas, U.S., on Sunday, March 12, 2017.\nDavid Paul Morris | Bloomberg | Getty Images\nMark Cuban, billionaire owner of the National Basketball Association's (NBA) Dallas Mavericks basketball team, speaks at the 2017 South By Southwest (SXSW) Interactive Festival at the Austin Convention Center in Austin, Texas, U.S., on Sunday, March 12, 2017.\nIn his book \"How to Win at the Sport of Business,\" Cuban describes being fired for \"not telling anyone [he] was going to lunch to try to close a deal.\"\n\nBut he learned from that setback. Besides encouraging him to become an entrepreneur and his own boss, it shaped his leadership style.\n\n\"[My former boss] was my mentor, but not in the way you'd expect,\" Cuban writes. \"Even now I think back to things he did, and I do the opposite.\"\n\nHis best advice to young professionals?\n\n\"Never stop learning,\" he says. \"Never stop grinding. Never stop loving every single minute of your life.\"\n\n2. Elon Musk\n\nThe Tesla and SpaceX CEO faced a challenging time when he dropped out of Stanford University, where he had planned to pursue a Ph.D. in applied physics and materials science, after just two days.\n\n\"It got to the start of the quarter at Stanford, so I had to make a decision, and I decided to go on deferment,\" he tells entrepreneur interview series Foundation. \"I said I'd probably be back in six months, and [the chairman of the department] said he was probably never going to hear from me again. And he was correct.\"\n Tesla Motors Inc.\nHe slept on the floor of an office, showered at a nearby YMCA and struggled to make ends meet. Still, he didn't abandon his entrepreneurial goals. He built Zip2, an online software company that allowed newspapers to publish their content online, and the big career risk soon paid off. The company was a success and Compaq bought it a deal valued at about $300 million.\n\nThe experience taught him to not fear risks and to work harder than anybody else out there.\n\n3. J.K. Rowling\n\nIn her 20s, following the death of her mother, Rowling moved to Portugal and became an English teacher. There she met and married her husband. She suffered a miscarriage and later gave birth to a daughter, Jessica. But Rowling's marriage soon fell apart.\n\nJ.K. Rowling\n\nGetty Images\nJ.K. Rowling\nShe moved back to the U.K, poor and severely depressed. \"We're talking suicidal thoughts here, we're not talking, 'I'm a little bit miserable,'\" Rowling tells Britain's Sunday Times. \"Mid-twenties life circumstances were poor, and I really plummeted.\"\n\nShe took a job teaching in Edinburgh, Scotland, and came up with the idea of a school for wizards and a character named Harry Potter. She developed the idea further, writing in every spare moment she had. After receiving \"loads\" of rejections from book publishers, she finally landed a deal for \"Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.\"\n\n4. Oprah Winfrey\n\nWhen Winfrey was 23, she was demoted from her job at Baltimore's WJZ-TV nightly news to a less-coveted morning spot.\n\nOprah Winfrey\nPhoto by Jemal Countess\nOprah Winfrey\n\"I had no idea what I was in for or that this was going to be the greatest growing period of my adult life,\" Winfrey said. \"It shook me to my very core, and I didn't even know at the time that I was being shaken.\"\n\nIt was a key turning point that led Winfrey to becoming the TV host the world knows her as today.\n\n5. Steve Jobs\n\nBefore Jobs started building Apple in a garage, he was a young adult looking for meaning in life. After one semester at Reed College, Jobs dropped out. He traveled to India to find purpose in his life, and experimented with psychedelic drugs.\n\nSteve Jobs\nJustin Sullivan | Getty Images\nSteve Jobs\nThe period of uncertainty helped guide Jobs to his \"aha\" moment, where, along with Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, he realized he could build a world-changing computer.\n\nHow to overcome your own quarter-life crisis:\n\n1. Look at what has inspired you in the past\n\nPutting pen to paper could help you build your network, according to a best-selling author and career expert.\nKelvin Murray/Getty Images\nPutting pen to paper could help you build your network, according to a best-selling author and career expert.\nAdam Poswolsky , who was broke and unemployed at 27, offers a key lesson in his book \"The Quarter-Life Breakthrough.\" Poswolsky turned his crisis into a valuable career as a writer, speaker and millennial career expert, and says that looking at what has made you happy in the past could point in the right direction for your next career move.\n\nExamine what moments in your past defined and inspired you, he suggests.\n\n\"Being able to articulate the defining moments that have shaped your life will help you get closer to realizing who you are and what your breakthrough is all about,\" he says.\n\n2. Start a project that inspires you\n\nBusiness man \nHero Images | Getty Images\nIf you're frustrated and not sure what you should be doing with your life, forget trying to find your \"one passion,\" says Jenny Blake, the co-creator of Google's career development program and author of \"PIVOT: The Only Move That Matters Is Your Next One.\"\n\n\"For some, the pressure to define a purpose or mission statement is stifling and causes much unnecessary angst,\" she writes.\n\n\"I recommend people follow a project-based purpose,\" Blake tells CNBC.\n\nHaving a \"project-based purpose\" means finding initiatives at work that excite you and make you feel like you're having an impact, she says. Alternatively, you could start a side project that will teach you valuable skills and give you a way to explore your interests.\n\n3. Focus more on building healthy relationships and cultivating hobbies\n\ndrse03089\nSean Drakes/LatinContent/Getty Images\nWhat you do outside of work is incredibly important to your career, Blake says. That's why she recommends everyone write his or her own formula for happiness. The exercise helps people see their life and career more holistically, she says.\n\n\"What are the activities,\" she asks, \"where if you were to get these done in a given day or week, takes you 80 percent of the way toward feeling great?\"\n\nOnce you have that list, write your ideal formula for happiness.\n\nFor example, it could look like this:\n\nHappiness = Seeing a friend once a week + working out two times a week + going to bed by 10 p.m. + devoting 10 minutes each day to my side project.",

| body | 1. Perspective: Have you ever heard the story about two brothers who were raised by an alcoholic father? One grew up to be an alcoholic and when asked what happened he replied, “I watched my father”. The other grew up and never drank in his life. When asked what happened he replied, “I watched my father”. Two boys, same situation, two different perspectives. It’s as the saying goes; “your perspective in life will determine your destination”. Always remember that you determine who you are. Not your past experiences and certainly not genetics. It’s completely normal to get frustrated when you hit an obstacle en route to your goal. All goals involve challenges and uphill battles. Things aren’t always going to go your way but when you find yourself feeling angry for an extended period of time or complaining incessantly, this is usually a good sign that you are focusing too much on the problem. You could be inadvertently creating a debilitating loop of negativity for yourself. It’s time to shift your perspective! Let go of your anger and focus on a solution, stay focused on your goal. 2. Positivity: Don’t beat yourself up! I should really add this to my phone as a daily memo. As a Virgo, I know all too well about wallowing in self-disappointment. Learn to recognize when you are doing this and talk yourself out of it. Plain and simple, depression can be lethargic. You’re not going to accomplish much if you are hanging out in that negative loop I mentioned earlier, feeling sorry for yourself. 3. Persistence: Keep it up! Don’t quit when you hit a bump in the road. If you aim for a target and remain persistent I can promise that you will hit it eventually. Better yet, if you remain positive and approach inevitable obstacles with the right perspective, you will hit your target sooner rather than later. While you are far from common, it’s common to veer off course from time to time. The journey is uncertain but your goal should always be clear. Envision that goal in vivid detail and recite the 3 P’s to get yourself back on track. |

| body | The lesson from United Airlines has brought one point home, that even the most respected corporations can get it wrong when crisis strikes . A crisis being any event that can bring harm to your organization. Following are some time-tested strategies that can help a corporation stop the bleeding and repair the damage. 1 . Pre-Crisis Brainstorming There is a saying in the military “ The more you sweat in peace, the less you bleed in war”, the same goes for a crisis situation. Waiting for a crisis to strike is organizational suicide. Do this exercise instead, brainstorm at least 10 ideas that can potentially harm your organization. Review the past crisis data history and study your competitors if you want to. These scenarios can help pre-prepare for a crisis situation, which can be related to Corporate reputation loss, financial viability or life damage within an organization. 2.Internal Audience List Who are the internal players in your organization that effects the communication strategy? Often times top companies will have a template list e.g Executive leadership will be the first to be notified when a crisis strikes. Other types of internal audiences include department head (operations), Communications Team(PR, Corporate), Legal staff (to deal with any external penetrations).Having a crisis audience list will increase the response time which can be a crucial make or break component. 3.Distributive Chain Of Command Even though United Airlines CEO Oscar Munoz had the communicator of the year award from PRWeek , his company missed the basics. The reason was hierarchy! Chief Communications Officer Tony Cervone was under the authority of the HR Department and couldn't act without prior consent. In a crisis situation, the first question to ask is “Who is the leader”. All communications must then go through this leader. This is known as Situational Chain of command. In a crisis situation bureaucracy is the death of communication, reshuffle before engaging! 4. Channel Inventory In Panic mode communicators often forget how to carry out a channel inventory audit. After the crisis has been identified and a leader has been nominated with a crisis command center, the next step is to find where is the information flowing from. The channels can range from social media, TV, radio, messaging to newspapers. Identify the most live channels of communication and develop a plan to access them. 5. Engagement Strategy Once you have your channel plan in place, it is time to follow the classic crisis management plan. a) Craft an Opening statement — It has to take responsibility(Apologize), be credible and not too overloaded with information b) Brainstorm worst case scenario — This will help you prepare for the onslaught by the press and help you avoid the worst. c) Craft Regular Answers — The Communication has to feed the audience in timely intervals with updates along the crisis control lines. You also need to log in your responses for post-crisis review. d) Rehearse- Often times companies will hold mock press conferences to get their best communicator in front of the frenzy. Rehearse, Rehearse, Rehearse! you can never be prepared enough. 6. Post Crisis Evaluation A post-crisis evaluation report is a vital document that helps to assess the impact of the crisis on the company. The following are some vital questions to be addressed in the report How has the crisis impacted any new reality in the organization? e.g are there blind spots in the company arsenal? How was the crisis identified? Could it have been more timely? Identify the heroes and top-tier performers who went out of their way to help during the crisis (bolsters company culture) Assess the damage done to company assets i.e stocks, corporate reputation, product credibility etc. Mistakes are made by stellar corporations and the most disciplined of executives. While a crisis might be unavoidable, but with intelligent strategy it can not only be controlled but also made to strengthen the core of a company. In a crisis situation, a company is the most vulnerable and honest with its values. |
