| body | One huge mistake in prepping, no matter what side of the fence you're on, is tunnel vision. Many who get into prepping will concentrate so much on the aspect of survival AFTER an emergency that many forget that there are emergencies which we can avoid by being active socially and politically. Preppers can get active many ways: calling senators when Moveon.org texts you a reminder, Abby the Address bot does something similar but with postcards, Resist Bot will send faxes to your senators, The Watchmen of the Streets is a homeless outreach, Redneck Revolt is a group of people looking to take back the term Redneck and at the same time take down fascist and white supremacists. No matter what people prep for we have to remember that unless we are proactive in our communities and our governments, local and federal, we are basically begging for not only emergencies that can be avoided but at the same time we are helping to cause those emergencies to big bigger and more disastrous. That paragraph probably screams hyperbole but think about the horrible flooding and that hit Houston and Puerto Rico. Much of the areas devastated were the poorer areas often overlooked and ignored by local and federal entities when things like flood plain planing would take place. The poorer areas are often also the businesses and homes which don't have insurance that can cover the losses that happen. These poorer areas correspond to a high rate of minorities, poor whites and the homeless keeping all three groups in a situation that keeps them on the low end of the totem pole. Helping to focus on these groups can not only help raise them out of inhumane circumstances but also raise the country as whole and keep certain emergencies from happening. If we forced our representatives to use taxes to better not only infrastructure but also public transportation and city natural disaster planning and building we could help avoid or lessen the impact of the next large hurricane, tornado, wildfire, etc. If we only prep for tomorrow we beg to be left in yesterday. -Bones https://www.minds.com/LeftOfCenterPrepping |

| body | "Prepping" and "holidays" are two terms most people wouldn't put together in one sentence but if the holidays can teach us anything it's that with enough glittery wrapping and Bing Crosby bashing your eardrums into peppermint bark singing White Christmas ANYTHING can be made into a new, fun holiday tradition! Now, some may say that you should leave whatever holiday you celebrate alone and not let your prepping cast a creepy shadow over the celebrations BUT prepping isn't something that you drop for a month or two. Plenty of emergencies come up during the holiday season and the last thing you want is to have the insult of having nothing to fall back on after the injury. Do you do advent? Small items that can be added to a bug-in or bug-out bag are perfect. Can opener, sturdy flashlight, hand crank small electronics charger or solar phone charger, etc. Make it fun and mix it up if you have kids. Let them build their bags as you count down. All that candy can be helpful to your prepping as well. When you are using canned and dry goods to stay alive a Snickers or candy cane as a sweet morale booster can go a long way in keeping spirits up. You want a cheap way to gather kindling? Go to the local tree lots. Grab those cut branches and tree stump ends. A small box or two of those will help with all that amazingly flammable sap, and I don't mean your cheesy uncle this time! Want to make the gathering of those branches and stumps fun? Homemade wreaths and ornaments! Sand down those stump pieces and either paint or burn cute images into them. This is great if you need something for your kids to keep busy with and you don't want to look weird taking branches and stumps home. I'm the first to say that you don't need to spend lots or anything at all on preps but that route takes some major time and skills. The holidays are great for major sales on things that can make your prepping easier to include canned and dry foods. The holidays aren't only great for buying and storing preps but remembering WHY you prep. Getting pictures and making precious memories are going to help if you have to break open that ten pound can of potatoes later on. The people who say that you can't enjoy the holidays AND prep are people that aren't allowing themselves to be more open minded to possibilities. From Left of Center Prepping we hope whatever you celebrate you have happy and memorable times! Share how you prep during the holidays in the comments below! https://www.minds.com/LeftOfCenterPrepping |

You should have some kind of plan and preps." *"Oh. I hadn't thought of that..." This was a conversation I had with my California cousin just last week. Many in California are now in the horrible situation of having to leave everything behind to burn just to stay alive. Many people had to grab what they could and go, others didn't even get the chance to do that because they were out running errands when they were told they couldn't go home. These people haven't just lost a physical home and memories but very important documents. Identification, diplomas, birth certificates, social security cards, copies of various insurances, any paperwork related to the payment or paying off of bills. Now, it is absolutely imperative that people put their lives above possessions but in the coming months to years ahead those that left that paperwork behind are going to have one hell of a time getting their lives back on track. Even if your family members aren't interested in prepping for a large emergency following the basics that the Red Cross suggests can save them a real headache on top of heartache. If you're in California please don't wait until it is too late, gather your things and have them ready to go. http://www.redcross.org/get-help/how-to-prepare-for-emergencies#About -Bones https://www.minds.com/LeftOfCenterPrepping |

| body | Beginning any new adventure such as prepping takes a lot of research. Research and advice. When my wife and I moved to a more rural area from California we had absolutely no experience with caring for not only a house but a good amount land. We have plans and hopes but like a lot of people we have a lot of obstacles in the way. I'm a disabled Veteran and she works over 40 hours to help support us and our many rescues. We have to maximize time, physical exertion and space to accomplish our mutual goal of complete self-sufficiency. When we first started down this path we decided we would start with gardening. Specifically growing as much of our own food, herbs and spices as possible. Seemed easy at the time.......until we realized that when you leave California for the East Coast you'll get a harsh lesson in the reality of.......SEASONS!!!!! That's right. We had to learn about Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter weather. When we finally had that under our belts we decided it was time to start a little experimental garden in the front yard. We had a professional landscaper for a few months whom I asked about how to get the grass out of the area I wanted to plant in without tearing it out and fighting it every week when it would grow back. I was told to saturate the area with Round-Up weed killer. I pointed out that the area was for edibles but he insisted the area should be saturated and then only shrubs planted because it is easier to buy anything I would plant. By now I'm sure you can tell I didn't follow his advice. Years later, forums later, books later, advice later and experience later we are starting our front garden with a mixture of it all. We found that flattened cardboard boxes laid over the area will kill the grass and weeds and instead of digging we are growing upwards with the help of straw bales. The straw will nurture, insulate and support anything from seedlings to fist sized root balls. The cardboard keeps us from having to fight the grass. By the time the cardboard biodegrades the plants on top will be able to dig deep with roots and help keep the grass at bay. Did we get to start our garden when we wanted? No. Did we finally do it the way we wanted without compromising with things like dangerous chemicals? Yes. For us, self sufficiency is the ultimate prep and being able to grow what we eat and use takes us that much closer to that goal. If we had gone with the first advice we were given we would have had to give up a piece of our dream. For some it might not be a big deal but for us it is. When seeking advice don't think not taking the first, second, third suggestion is rude or ungrateful. The more advice the merrier for most topics. Shopping around works great for prices and advice!!! -Bones https://www.minds.com/LeftOfCenterPrepping |

| body | So, who exactly are these folks we call "preppers"? I used to envision them as fearful, socially abrasive gun-huggers who struggled with pasty complexions, or "bunker skin", if you will. They were all named Billy Bob. Even the women. And they just needed more love in their lives. And more Vitamin D (because the bunker life is harsh!). And someone to pat their knees and assure them that the bright light breaking over the horizon was just the sun rising with a new day, not the A-Bomb they've expected since they helped grandpa build the Cold War bunker. And then proceeded to live in it ever since. So it's safe to say, preppers be crazy. Or, at least, such has been my enduring impression of them. Oh, come on, I'm not alone! Some of you have thought likewise. Who could blame us? The media does nothing to present a balanced portrayal of, well, anything, much less the prepper sub-culture. And besides, I'm a proud liberal, so why would I entertain a high regard for a lifestyle bound up in ultra conservative stereotypes? I'm a proud...open-minded...liberal. Anyway, my eyes were recently opened. And I realized that preppers aren't all named Billy Bob. And they're not all politically conservative. In fact, they don't fit into just one of any particular groups or ideologies. They're actually just, well, people. And a great many of them actually care about other people, which is why they prep in the first place. I blame this recent revelation on my wife, who dragged me to a prepping expo several Saturdays back. Can't work the italics enough when I say, I did not wanna go. I was afraid the prepper wackos would sniff out my politics and my general revulsion of everything they loved. I was afraid they would try to dress me in their little tin hats (I was sure they wore them!) and force me to make drinking water from my own urine. Worse than that, I was terrified they would try to convert me! But they didn't do any of that. They actually shared some of their knowledge. And some of their skills. And some of their personal journeys. And they were pretty normal...pretty sane. In fact, many wanted to learn new skills and have an abundance of useful items on hand so that they could help others during critical or emergency times. And that's not just sane, it's noble and loving and beautiful. It's kind of...liberal. And so, I came to realize the goodness and intelligence of this practice called prepping. And I'm not ashamed to admit that I'd check out another prepping expo on any given Saturday, with a totally open mind to the attending preppers' methods. And their madness. -Stella https://www.minds.com/LeftOfCenterPrepping |

| body | Many in the prepping world will tell you to be ready for your friends and family to think you have gone nutters when you start prepping but what about your significant other? Not every couple see eye to eye on prepping and with many couples only one person will be a prepper. Does this mean you can't share your prepping world with your better half? Not at all. I'm a former military member previously deployed to combat areas and have traveled more of the world than a lot of my peers to include my wife but that doesn't mean people who haven't seen how bad situations can get when you haven't prepped can't get into prepping. For years my wife and family thought I was nuts. They all thought that PTSD and all that just made me flip my proverbial lid. Until I took my wife to a preppers show. I specifically took her to a preppers show that didn't include a gun/knife show because I didn't want her overwhelmed. We sat in on lectures by nice, polite people that may not share our political and social views but didn't let that stop them from trying to get us as informed as humanly possible. She got to speak to people that have various levels of experience in the prepping world. She got to see that as many tables out in the expo area were looking to sell things many sellers were just as equally open to discussing and answering questions, leading her to less expensive products or even suggesting that before anything is bought she use certain sites with free information about things like practicing stitches for clothes and wounds. She went in with hesitation and preconceived notions of the preppers and some did fit what she thought would be the "typical" prepper but more than not she found the community not crazy about the end times but passionate about being able to not just give their families a fighting chance after an emergency but their neighbors and local communities the possibility of thriving together during and after one. This is what hit home for my wife. The idea of prepping to be nuclear apocalypse survivors in a Mad Max world blew like dust into the wind and the idea of having food, water and community after a natural disaster like a hurricane or earthquake took roots instead. This also worked for taking my wife to a training course on how to handle an active shooter. The week leading up to the training she lamented and worried and stressed about being placed in a stressful though fake situation, until she was there. She was taught to think and stay calm, to consider alternative to a flight response. When we left she felt less scared about IF she was ever in that situation because she was given the opportunity in a safe environment to practice physically and mentally her responses. This approach works for prepping as well. When we take someone who believes something about a particular event, people, situation, and introduce them to it they often times will be more open to seeing that they may have judged too quickly. Someone who thinks rifles are scary and too dangerous for use can be taken to a range and shown the proper use, dismantling and reassembly of the gun, the safety precautions involved and trouble shooting of many common issues. Giving someone knowledge and a little experience can build bridges and tear down walls. Some people will NEVER say yes to certain things like prepping but even if only one person in the relationship works on it then that is more than no one in the relationship working on it. With time your better half may even grow an interest in it. Prepping as a couple or while in a relationship is an important but often over looked aspect that we will be covering. | body | You'll often hear that saving a little can help a lot when it come to finances, but the same is true for food preparation. During holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas, many Americans have a tradition of over- indulging and preparing too much food which often goes to waste. So the question becomes, which is better: Deluding yourself into believing you can finish all of the leftovers or canning some of that food now, so if you can't eat it all you haven't lost anything? Leftovers of big holiday meals present an excellent opportunity to practice canning, dehydration and/or vacuum sealing, depending on what you have available to you. If you don't currently have the items that can help you can your own food, don't be afraid to look at second hand stores or ask family or friends, and don't forget the huge sales for "Black Friday" and "Cyber Monday" happening this weekend. These options will help you to stock up a lot of preparations for surprisingly little money. Even if you only can two or three items, that will mean you've gained two or three more cans worth of canning experience, plus added two or three cans to your pantry. After all, wouldn't it be great to be able to have your famous turkey and gravy in the middle of March without having to make it all from scratch? Plenty of information is available online and the United States Department of Agriculture has a nifty P.D.F for those interested which we will link at the end of this. If you have questions, you can find helpful and friendly forums dedicated to the home preservation of food. Remember: Doing a little now can save you a lot later! -Bones https://www.minds.com/LeftOfCenterPrepping http://homesteadbasics.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/8078550-complete-guide-to-home-canning.pdf |

| body | Many experts will tell you that any goal you have should be worked on everyday. Preparing for an emergency is no different. The more you work on it the better you will get at it and the more comfortable you will be when the time comes to break out those skills. You don't have to reserve hours a day to work on it. Just taking a walk around your neighborhood for 5-15 minutes or using commercial breaks between your favorite t.v. show can help immensely with your mental and physical preparations. Can you identify the "weeds" growing in your yard? Many so called weeds commonly found in yards can be used as food or medicine. Do you have at least one potted herb, fruit or veggie? Do any fruit or nut trees grow in your area that you can gather from? Are you lucky enough to live near a lake, creek or river? If so take time to learn how long it would take you to get to those water sources, gather water and take it back to your home. Gather materials and learn how to build a small "salad bar" in your home. Lettuces, chards, kales, radishes, small tomatoes, sprouts, carrots, green onions, etc, can all be grown in small spaces, harvested as needed and during an emergency will be like gold when it can be used to break up canned and pre-packaged foods. Hobbies you can work on during an emergency can help keep you in a better state of mind. Would you like to learn wood carving, knitting, crocheting, simple sewing, HAM radio, herbal identification, etc? All these and more can be done with a little time a day and the internet is a great place for any information you need to help you. Have you ever thought of dehydrating your own supplies? Or how about learning dehydrating just to help with quicker food prep on a regular basis? During the winter and spring depending on where you live you can use the extra little warmth from the dehydrating process to keep your house warm and thermostat down a few degrees. You can dehydrate herbs to cook with, cooked beans and rice for a quick dinner next week, eggs and sausage for that upcoming camping trip, fruits and veggies for meals or quick snacks. Canning something that has your interest? Many things can be canned safely now that was once taboo. Meats, butters, prepared foods like chilies or vegetarian options like tofu can all be canned and saved for future use. If you have a special dish your friends and family know you for you can now make it, can it and give it as a gift to your loved ones. Research into the things you would like to learn can be done in any chosen amount of time. Keep a notebook with you so you know where you left off and can keep track of questions, answers and locations of information. If you have access to a printer you can print out the information you need and look over it during commercial breaks, bathroom breaks, lunch breaks, etc. You don't have to buy any books on the subjects but if you do don't be afraid to underline, highlight, dog ear and become thoroughly familiar with it. Look at second hand stores for the books you are interested in. You can sometimes find a 30$ book on a subject for as little as 50 cents. Don't let a lack of free time hold you back from making a future emergency go as easily as humanly possible. Finding that time during your carpool time to work, bath time, cleaning the yard, etc will pay for itself in no time at all. Remember an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure! -Bones https://www.minds.com/LeftOfCenterPrepping |

| body | Many people don't look further than their own home and "bug-out" location when it comes to prepping and in doing so get a severe case of tunnel vision. When prepping becomes your goal you need to recognize that compared to others you are a "newbie". Surviving an emergency in California is going to be a lot different than in New Jersey. The best place to start is by looking up your local prepping groups for your state and region. You'll find people that can guide you to the best sources of information such as best preps to gather water, what local plants can be gathered and stored for future use, regulations to make your home go "off-grid", etc. All prepping groups are guarded and won't be thrilled with anyone excitedly asking to meet up or wanting preppers to give them anything besides guidance and help. Show respect to the people that you are getting this information from. They may have different views or they may go on angry rants but it costs you nothing to ignore and move on. After all you are looking to learn and in doing so survive an emergency and thrive after not win an argument. Now you might find some people locally that you can really develop a friendship with and in doing so can build an in person community to rely on with each other which is great. Don't be so eager however that you jump into a group with people that end up not fitting in with your style. That may sound harsh but consider this: -Three months have gone by since a generic emergency has taken out the power gird, city water and gas, the situation has been determined by local emergency workers to not be fixable within six more months. You and your group decide it is better at this point if you all pool supplies and stay in one central location for safety because social order has broken down and desperate people are doing desperate things. -You arrive at the location and after everyone settles into the roles you all decided on before hand a month goes by comfortably. One afternoon a group of 4 adults and 8 children show up to the gates and asks for help. Food, water, shelter, anything at all they'll take it. You can tell that the adults are starving and the children are very malnourished. -What will your group do? -You knew the people of your group for only 3 or 4 months before the Shit Hit the Fan and you could have sworn you all would have chosen the same way to act in this situation but that isn't the case. -One third of the group thinks the strangers at the gate need to move on with absolutely nothing but a possible gun shot wound or two to get them moving faster. -Another third think the strangers should be shot and buried with the logic that if they are allowed to leave they may bring in a bigger group of "scavengers" to come and take everything your group put together. -You are part of the last third that think if you bring in the 4 adults and 8 children you can ration food differently but while doing so teach them how to help with the crops and upkeep to "pay" their way. Not to mention two of the adults have skills such as dentistry and electrician. -In such groups a vote would be taken and you are in the group that won't win that vote. The vote is to not only say no to the group but it's decided the adults should be shot and the kids left to survive on their own because they aren't seen as much as a threat even though the likelihood of surviving by themselves is nil. -You fight and argue and eventually you and the rest that don't agree with the decision are informed that you are now also a threat. You all either do as your told while being supervised constantly or you can have a bullet each just like the 4 adults at the gate. -What now? This situation may sound far fetched but between war, civil unrest, economic downfalls and natural disasters these types of scenarios have happened and people have found out just what kind of person they and their neighbors are. Now this isn't to discourage you from finding prepper groups and people. This is to just make sure you know the importance of not jumping into the first group you think you like. Play the field as they say and find a match that fits. Finding these people are also another important step in using your local group forums, websites, etc. You can use the internet to connect to people but a group you like eight states over won't be able to help you once the grid goes down. Remember that the last thing you want to lose during an emergency is yourself. -Bones https://www.minds.com/LeftOfCenterPrepping |

| body | New to prepping or an old pro at it the first rule of any prep is to prep your mind. You can have enough supplies stored to last you ten years but if you aren't mentally prepared you won't last to year one. Most people have a preconceived idea of what a prepper is because of movies or t.v. shows. You have the prepper as a comedic tool or as the insane killer hell bent on taking out everyone and anyone that found them and their bunker. The truth of prepping is that it is as diverse a group as any other. You'll find the gun nut, the ultra-conservative Christian, short term emergency prepper, the Anti-Fa prepper, the off-grid survivalist and of course the liberal prepper. No matter what kind you are you always want to start small and with preparing yourself to handle the fact that when you break out those supplies you are not breaking them out for a party or to show them off. You take the supplies out because something has happened and you must now be self sufficient. Ask yourself the following questions: 1. Can I ration servings of food and water in a comfortable enough way that I won't send my body and mind into shock? 2. Am I and my family able to go 72 hours without electronic devices? 3. When times get tough do I have a spiritual or faith based belief that I can lean on? 4. Do I (or my family) have any vices that will make the situation harder once those items are cut off, e.g. tobacco products, alcohol, drugs, sugars or junk foods, etc ? 5. Surviving after an emergency often takes more physical exertion than many people are prepared for, would you be able to hack it? 6. How do I and my family deal with stress? How do we treat each other when we are all stressed? These are just a few questions that can help you get started on mentally preparing yourself for an emergency. In places like Puerto Rico, Texas and California the situation of surviving was made even more difficult because whatever supplies people may have had stored were wiped out and the ability to not just survive with family members but neighbors and strangers in large gyms, stadiums, churches, etc. became the norm. If you can't handle being stuck in your home with your family for 72 hours with rationed food and no electricity how do you think you would do if everything you had was swept away by water or fire AND you now had to wake up on a cot next to a stranger in a school gym and had no control of your situation outside of how you handle it? This isn't a scenario a lot of people ever thought they would find themselves in but in just a few months thousands of people in several different locations woke up to exactly that. They may be out of the news now but that doesn't mean the situation has changed for many of these folks. Could you make it in there shoes? Since the natural disasters mentioned people have not only faced crushing hunger, dehydration, loss of family and friends by the disaster but also people have taken their own lives. You may think they have over reacted but with the crushing weight of not getting cell reception or the driver in front going a little slow people have lost their heads and over reacted over a lot less. If you aren't the type to have done such before then congratulations, you are in the minority but don't think that would count you out from those that would react with anger or hate if after two weeks in a mass living situation you thought someone was getting bigger rations than you or was allowed an extra blanket. A situation like that can take the calmest and most rational person and turn them into the raging Hulk. Before storing cans of food or surplus water take a few hours or maybe a few days to really sit down and think about this. Get a pen and paper and write down various scenarios that you have either seen others have to go through or that you think you may encounter in an emergency situation. Include injuries most likely you or someone in your group can easily receive, type of location, are you able to get to your supplies in this scenario or were you caught off guard at work or on the highway? You don't need a novel for each scenario, just bullet points. Save space in between each bullet for any thoughts you have or questions and make sure to write it down. It's better to answer questions now rather than later. Part of being able to mentally handle a situation is having the confidence that you have thought of the scenario and have worked out a rough plan of action. If you are caught off guard you'll be shaken and it will be harder for you to deal with the situation swiftly and efficiently. You are getting ready for a marathon, not a sprint. No one goes into a marathon with only physical preparation so you shouldn't either. -Bones! https://www.minds.com/LeftOfCenterPrepping |

They may be out of the news now but that doesn't mean the situation has changed for many of these folks. Could you make it in there shoes?\n\nSince the natural disasters mentioned people have not only faced crushing hunger, dehydration, loss of family and friends by the disaster but also people have taken their own lives. You may think they have over reacted but with the crushing weight of not getting cell reception or the driver in front going a little slow people have lost their heads and over reacted over a lot less. \n\nIf you aren't the type to have done such before then congratulations, you are in the minority but don't think that would count you out from those that would react with anger or hate if after two weeks in a mass living situation you thought someone was getting bigger rations than you or was allowed an extra blanket. A situation like that can take the calmest and most rational person and turn them into the raging Hulk. \n\nBefore storing cans of food or surplus water take a few hours or maybe a few days to really sit down and think about this. \n\nYou don't need a novel for each scenario, just bullet points. Save space in between each bullet for any thoughts you have or questions and make sure to write it down. It's better to answer questions now rather than later. Part of being able to mentally handle a situation is having the confidence that you have thought of the scenario and have worked out a rough plan of action. If you are caught off guard you'll be shaken and it will be harder for you to deal with the situation swiftly and efficiently.\n\nYou are getting ready for a marathon, not a sprint. No one goes into a marathon with only physical preparation so you shouldn't either.\n\n-Bones!\nhttps://www.minds.com/LeftOfCenterPrepping\n\n",

| body | Having already posted on Minds.com we will be republishing our blog posts here in hopes that a wider audience will help us get information to the people and help build a community of like minded individuals that believe emergency prepping fits perfectly in line with more liberal belief systems despite the attempt to corner it by the "alt-right" and staunch conservatives out there. We will begin with our Introduction post and work chronologically from there. Liberally Prepping while Liberal -Bones For many Liberals in America our society today feels as if we have taken a collective trip through time to an earlier, uglier, more dangerous America. We are citizens that while we are doing our best to resist know that you must also prepare. We are those that in prepping forums or FB pages feel on the fringe and cringe when other members start ranting about "snowflakes", "libtards" and those trying to steal "God given rights" to own weapons of mass destruction. We feel women should have a choice, BLM and Antifa aren't terrorist and common sense gun legislation is imperative. If any of this applies to you then please join us as we prep together! New to prepping or just looking to supplement the information you already have we would love to have you. You've seen the conservative leaning groups, now it's time for you to check out us! https://www.minds.com/LeftOfCenterPrepping |
