      "body": "It is sad to see this type of incident happening, we do not know all of the causes. Possibly in the west, action would have been more intense and swift with pepper spray, negotiators or nets or even shooting to wound the suspect. But definitely this type of incident is not a great situation in any case or any country.",

He ran away, barricaded and shot himself to death. \n\nThis kind of incident is quite rare in Japan. There is hardly any gunfire (except for some yakuza business) or barricading. However, people question, did the police take the reasonable approach to this incident? What would happen if an incident of this nature occurred in your own country?\n\nHere is the timeline that was reported by multiple media sources:\n\n### August 29\n\n8:50: The suspect shot 4 employees at the meeting room of the construction company, Wadai Kogyo. This is his his family run company. This left 1 dead, 1 unconscious and 2 seriously wounded. \n\nThe suspect was supposed to be imprisoned on this day for violation of the Stimulant Drugs Control Act that was confirmed recently.\n\n### August 30\n\n21:10: An ex-employee of the same company saw the suspect riding the push bike. It was reported and the police found him on the road. He shot at the police cars 4 times and ran away. One hit and broke the window of the police car.\n\n### August 31\n\n1:00: The police found the suspect at an apartment near his company. He started barricading on the outdoor walkway of the second floor and on the stage of the construction site next to it. He had 2 guns. He sometimes pointed one at himself. The police started convincing him to surrender with their negotiators. \n\nHe was outside the building and exposed to the public. The police and the media could see him. This is the island full of cats. There are cats here and cats there, cats everywhere! Now are you curious?<br>\n</p>\n<h2>On the way</h2>\n<p>There are only a few ferries that go to Tashirojima from the closest town called Ishinomaki on the main island of Honshu. That means you need to stay the night before the trip somewhere in this area. I recommend to stay over in Sendai. This is the biggest city in the Tohoku region and you will find every kind of hotel here.&nbsp;</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://s21.postimg.org/tibbh150n/Tashirojima.png\" width=\"673\" height=\"607\"/></p>\n<p>Make sure to get up early in the morning to take the 1-1.5 hour local train up to Ishinomaki. You don’t want to miss the ferry over to the island. Although Tashirojima became quite famous when it was introduced as “The cat island” in the media and the tourist population has grown, there are only a few boats a day that travel to it from the main island. Only one in the morning.<br>\n<img src=\"https://s3.postimg.org/5xrcfpf8z/CIMG7344.jpg\" width=\"1066\" height=\"800\"/></p>\n<h2>About the village</h2>\n<p>When I got off the boat I noticed that this island is obviously a fishing village. I saw some rusty fishing boats at the small port but were these still working? The question came to mind when I read that the population was below 100 (82 in 2015) in Tashirojima. On this island the residents’ average age is in their 70s. But if any industry still exists in this place, fishing is definitely the main industry they have. Because all I could see was that port otherwise abandoned houses in the bushy hills.&nbsp;</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://s22.postimg.org/83sfuneep/CIMG7343.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\"/></p>\n<p>This area in Tohoku was heavily affected by the tsunami in the Tohoku earthquakes in 2011. In Tashirojima a few houses got destroyed, some of the port sank and the ferry didn’t function fully for a while. I went there before the earthquakes and felt sad when I heard about the news as I knew how peaceful this place was.<br>\n</p>\n<h2>The cats</h2>\n<p>When I walked into the hill town with a lot of empty houses, I met many cats instead of people. They were not scared or worried about humans, but relaxed and fulfilled. The interesting part about this is that nobody here tries to own the cats but treat them like they're part of one big family. Cats live outdoors but get fed by random people passing by. Basically they are half-free half-community-owned cats.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://s21.postimg.org/3u10n7qwn/CIMG7403.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\"/></p>\n<p>There is an old story. A fisherman accidentally killed a cat and felt very bad about this. So he buried it respectfully. After that people caught many fish without suffering from any marine accidents. They started worshipping cats and built many cat shrines.&nbsp;</p>\n<p>Now there are more cats than humans in Tashirojima. This is the island full of cats. There are cats here and cats there, cats everywhere! Now are you curious?<br>\n</p>\n<h2>On the way</h2>\n<p>There are only a few ferries that go to Tashirojima from the closest town called Ishinomaki on the main island of Honshu. That means you need to stay the night before the trip somewhere in this area. I recommend to stay over in Sendai. This is the biggest city in the Tohoku region and you will find every kind of hotel here.&nbsp;</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://s21.postimg.org/tibbh150n/Tashirojima.png\" width=\"673\" height=\"607\"/></p>\n<p>Make sure to get up early in the morning to take the 1-1.5 hour local train up to Ishinomaki. You don’t want to miss the ferry over to the island. Although Tashirojima became quite famous when it was introduced as “The cat island” in the media and the tourist population has grown, there are only a few boats a day that travel to it from the main island. Only one in the morning.<br>\n<img src=\"https://s3.postimg.org/5xrcfpf8z/CIMG7344.jpg\" width=\"1066\" height=\"800\"/></p>\n<h2>About the village</h2>\n<p>When I got off the boat I noticed that this island is obviously a fishing village. I saw some rusty fishing boats at the small port but were these still working? The question came to mind when I read that the population was below 100 (82 in 2015) in Tashirojima. On this island the residents’ average age is in their 70s. But if any industry still exists in this place, fishing is definitely the main industry they have. Because all I could see was that port otherwise abandoned houses in the bushy hills.&nbsp;</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://s22.postimg.org/83sfuneep/CIMG7343.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\"/></p>\n<p>This area in Tohoku was heavily affected by the tsunami in the Tohoku earthquakes in 2011. In Tashirojima a few houses got destroyed, some of the port sank and the ferry didn’t function fully for a while. I went there before the earthquakes and felt sad when I heard about the news as I knew how peaceful this place was.<br>\n</p>\n<h2>The cats</h2>\n<p>When I walked into the hill town with a lot of empty houses, I met many cats instead of people. They were not scared or worried about humans, but relaxed and fulfilled. The interesting part about this is that nobody here tries to own the cats but treat them like they're part of one big family. Cats live outdoors but get fed by random people passing by. Basically they are half-free half-community-owned cats.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://s21.postimg.org/3u10n7qwn/CIMG7403.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\"/></p>\n<p>There is an old story. A fisherman accidentally killed a cat and felt very bad about this. So he buried it respectfully. After that people caught many fish without suffering from any marine accidents. They started worshipping cats and built many cat shrines.&nbsp;</p>\n<p>Now there are more cats than humans in Tashirojima. Fuji and maybe some other popular tourist spots in Japan. Then you may want to see somewhere different. You could try this hidden, rural but very “Japanese” town in northern Japan. You might discover a different type of enjoyment. The place is called Hiraizumi. Here you will find temples, shrines, Japanese gardens, old stories and the great feeling of being a part of nature.&nbsp; All this to discover in just one place!</p>\n<h2>On the way</h2>\n<p>Hiraizumi is located in Iwate prefecture, the northern part of the Japanese main island Honshu. It is about 3 hours by Shinkansen and a local train from Tokyo. Yes, it is not very difficult to go to this country town. You don’t need to drive a hire car and struggle with all the Japanese road signs or find parking. You don't even need to walk hundreds of kilometers through the mountains fighting with bears or wild boar. You can sit down on a nice comfortable Shinkansen seat while glancing at passing landscapes in the seasonal color out of the window. You have a cup of coffee and a pack of snacks that you buy from Shinkansen attendants that constantly wander up and down the train. Everything is smooth, everything is efficient. After a few hours of this quality entertainment, suddenly you are there. You arrive in the little magical town surrounded by mountains and rivers.&nbsp;</p>\n<h2>The World Heritage site</h2>\n<p>Hopefully you put on some hiking shoes or sneakers at least. Because you wouldn’t see the true beauty of this area without walking through the forested hills. The relatively new townscape that you see when you get off at the Hiraizumi station is not the main spectacle. Get the tourist map at the station and it’s time to start walking! Firstly you have a short walk down to the <a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historic_Monuments_and_Sites_of_Hiraizumi\">Moutsuu-ji Temple</a> that was built in 850 AC. (It was burnt down a few times.) Moutsuu-ji has a great garden and is registered as a World Heritage site.&nbsp;<br>\n</p>\n<h2>Walk and feel</h2>\n<p>After the Moutsuu-ji Temple, I recommend to take a side trip on the way to other tourist spots like temples, shrines and museums. E.g. walk up on the hiking course in the mountain that leads you to Chuson-ji temple and you will see the quiet yet magnificent scene of tidy traditional houses surrounded by seasonal flowers that are not often seen by tourists. You hear the birds, a creek and trees in the gentle breeze. It is much better than walking on the narrow roads hearing car noises. I went there in late spring (May). I think it was one of the best seasons to travel there. It was a hot day (nearly 30 degrees C) but not steamy. When you feel tired, sit down under the trees, drink a bottle of water and look down at Kiatakami river that flows across the town.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://s13.postimg.org/9jkr85obr/CIMG7488.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\"/></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://s9.postimg.org/vwlyv1avj/CIMG7494.jpg\" width=\"1066\" height=\"800\"/></p>\n<h2><img src=\"https://s16.postimg.org/3sdhgn8c5/CIMG7492.jpg\" width=\"1066\" height=\"800\"/></h2>\n<h2>Old story</h2>\n<p>When you see the river, please take a read of a famous haiku (Japanese poem) written by one of the greatest haiku masters, Matsuo Basho:Japanese: 夏草や 兵どもが 夢の跡Direct words: Summer grass — all that remains of warrior dreamsMeaning:&nbsp;In this place where soldiers fought for glory once upon a time is now only leafy grass left.
