It cost us over $800 to move up our return trip by 6 months. We broke off our contract with the people in Dahab, Egypt and I quit my newly minted job that was going to sustain us for the year.\n\n*So...just what the hell happened?*\n\n---\n\nExcellent question. In truth (which is a mixture of hindsight and dishonesty latter revealed), we were never comfortable to begin with. The hindsight was my fiance and I were too trusting of the people. Don't get me wrong, the people in Dahab are amazingly kind and are always willing to help. But our housing was an absolute shithole. I get we're in a third world country, and essentially the Middle East, but when the contract calls for \"adequate living,\" we expect a shower where it has enough pressure to not sit on the floor and use the faucet...and even that was bad.\n\nI understand that's an easy fix for a plumber, but that wasn't all. The place screamed \"insecure!\" It was in a bad part of town, and they were going to relocate the business to a place \"even worse than this area.\" Sign my name under the \"nope\" section.\n\nWe felt absolutely cheated, especially since we were contracted to work for them for only room and food. When the room is unbearable and not adequate to anyone's standards, and then you have to pay for an AirBnB for two weeks before your employer even comes back to the area, we were gonna pay to work. Add on top of that the fact that the food budget they would give us didn't seem very trustworthy, and I knew we were in deep.\n\nNot only these, but the entire time we were there, something felt *off.* As if the place itself wasn't welcoming us. My fiance, Jess, is a place person in that she can read the situation of a place incredibly well. This was the reason why Cape Town, South Africa was such a success. But in Dahab, she wouldn't stop shaking. **I mean physically shaking.**\n\nI'm the people person, so everybody I talked to helped me ease a little bit into our scenario, but Jess was having none of it. And I could detect, through the \"this is paradise, you'll never want to leave\" spiel, that everyone here had become desensitized of the poverty of it all. To Jess and I, Dahab was not normal the way Cape Town and Durban were.\n\n*So, with that, we decided the cheapest and safest option was to bail. Abandon ship, bro.*\n\n---\n\nOh yeah, and I had to quit my new job due to the stress of it all. F*cks come in clusters, right?\n\nIt was a double whammy: 1. We need to get out of here ASAP; and 2. There's no way I can produce 24 quality articles per day for some company who cares more about their clients than their writers. Plus they were gonna pay me 1.38 cents per word, which is absurdly insulting.\n\nGetting knocked down a full two pegs sucks. There's no other way to explain it. Sitting in this Cairo airport, with my tail tucked firmly up against my belly, I can almost breathe knowing I'm going back to Oregon, somewhere I know. And somewhere that has all the amenities that I may want, but don't necessarily need right now. Like I said in the last post, America is better equipped to handle my lifestyle than what turned out to be west Asia. (Apparently, if you go past the Suez Canal in Egypt, you leave Africa and enter Asia. Fun stuff, yeah?)\n\nIn the end, homeward bound we go.\n\n---\n\nAs the famous philosopher Big Sean once said, \"Last night took a L, but tonight I bounce back.\"\n\nOnce decisions were made, things became simpler. It wasn't cheap - a $3500 whoopsie-daisy is quite costly - and it wasn't ideal, but saying this option out loud made us feel a whole heck of a lot better.\n\nIn Maslow's hierarchy of needs, we were missing the top 4 in Dahab, with a serious threat towards the fifth and most important need - the physiological. I'd rather cut my losses now and have my needs met than waste a month of my life seeing if things will get better. Starting a 6-month adventure with the first 24 hours being nothing but crap is not something I want to stick out.\n\nSo we go home, we be with loved ones, we adjust. Life throws you curveballs from time to time. It can't always be Cape Town. \n\nEvery trip, every country is a lesson: \n\n* In Switzerland and France, I learned I could travel internationally and be okay (of course, lesson #1). \n* The second lesson, in the Dominican Republic, was, \"We can't take *vacations*, we need to go on *trips*.\"\n* Los Angeles gave us an idea of where we want to set up our \"home base.\"\n* New York was flat out fun, but too much to ever live in.\n* Cape Town was heaven on Earth, while Durban was not good at all. Sometimes a place changes, and you change too.\n\nDahab, Egypt was pretty straightforward: Stay the hell away from third world countries. We overstepped with our momentum, making us fall through the cracks. We were caught way off guard, expectations were slashed drastically, and it was clear we had to make a choice that wasn't the original plan.\n\n*But don't worry! Basically, we feel lied to because the people we went there to work for claimed how amazing it was, and by our standards it was garbage. Our favorite part of the trip over was not getting to Dahab, but actually an 11 hour layover in Manhattan. I will be here for six months. **This is day one.**\n\nThis all feels incredibly crazy. I just started a full-time writing position with a client in Canada, which requires a lot of my time. Here, I cannot access Medium (\"took too long to respond,\" whatever the hell that means). And as of this moment, our living situation could very well be described as \"poverty.\"\n\n*And this is exactly why my fiance and I are digital nomads.*\n\n---\n\nJess and I have been together for three years now. We've known each other since we were five years old, but it wasn't until college that we got together as a couple. Our first year and a half was essentially virtual, as Jess was going to school in Lugano, Switzerland. Me - the American doofus - went to college a whole 2 hours away from my hometown. So for a while, it was one person living in a foreign country, where you don't have amenities like a dryer or English or supermarkets, and one person living in what I now know to be absolute splendor.\n\nFor the latter half of our relationship, we have been together for the most part. Working in the same office, getting a nice 1-bedroom apartment in the Oregon suburbs, and saving for trips was our life for a while. And it was good.\n\nBut it wasn't great. It wasn't until February 2017, when I told Jess I would go to South Africa with her, that our nomadic lives truly began.\n\n---\n\nYou see, Jess loved Durban, South Africa. A little ways out there (halfway across the world), everybody thought she was crazy. I didn't, though; I saw how important that place was for her, and so I agreed to travel with her and live for three months in both Cape Town and Durban.\n\nWe saved like demons, Jess started her own company, and we touched down in Cape Town on September 16th. For the next three months, we found ourselves and learned a lot. I started my own freelance writing, Jess grew her business, and we created a lifestyle centered around our priorities:\n\n* Fitness: Walking everywhere, access to workout equipment, being outside a lot, and exercising as often as possible.\n* Nutrition: Eating fruits, vegetables, nuts, grains, water and coffee makes us feel tremendous, healthy, and *alive*.\n* Vibes: We have to be near a body of water, surrounded by great people - *not great \"things\"* - and in an area that makes us feel happy.\n* Simplicity: A few quality items - solid laptop, books, a handful of clothes - is all we need to have a great time. **Memories > Materials**\n\nThis is where we get to Dahab, Egypt.\n\n\n![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmUKzq6pHW7mqkes1MboNX76cZUvW5GRkSJdLU1HaqpNxR/image.png)\n\n---\n\nBefore we left for what is going to be our longest adventure yet, I wasn't nervous. In hindsight, that should've worried me. Instead, after three flights, two days, and a long layover in New York, we're here.\n\nNow I'm nervous.\n\nOur place is, for lack of a better word, shit. It certainly doesn't scream SAFE. A dog barked all night long and other people in the apartment watched TV - **_on loud_** - until 2 AM. And the entire place, including the street, the shower, the lack of good water, and the doors, looks like sets from *Zero Dark Thirty*. You know, the bad parts.\n\nOn top of that, we don't have WiFi at the apartment, which is a big problem with our careers' dependence on it. Thankfully, the inn we're working for here has adequate internet connection (at least for my purposes). But man, talk about a 180. Jess cried last night, and if I wasn't super tired, I would've cried too. And I don't cry often.\n\nAs far as our lifestyle is concerned, it will be tough, but I believe it can still be salvaged. The fitness and nutrition is always on us. We decide how much movement our days consist of. And food is a matter of ordering right when eating out and making a lot of stir fries and Buddha bowls. \n\nThe vibes, on the other hand, will take some time. The vibes are a cross between *Slumdog Millionaire* and a doped-out hippy joint - which is to say very foreign to how we feel normally. The advice given has been \"patience,\" but that is a finite resource. \n\nFor simplicity, Dahab hits that right on the fucking head. All we have access to is food. Our suitcases are our lives. Like I said, it's enough for us, but it's always nice to have things on standby. Such as air conditioning. Or hospitals.\n\nI might be overreacting to this whole thing. Our first impressions were not good - crying within the first three hours of being in a place you're supposed to live in for half a year is never a good sign. But maybe it needs time. So we'll give it that. \n\nIt's new, and most times new is scary. Whether it's starting your side hustle, opening a new business, or traveling to a new country, you won't always be in your comfort zone.
