| title | Elmina Castle - Ghana - Africa |
| body | Constructed in 1482 by the Portuguese, who called it São Jorge da Mina, Elmina Castle is the oldest existent colonial structure in Sub\-Saharan Africa. It’s held up beautifully throughout the centuries, but as a center for the transatlantic slave trade, much of its history is dark. We took a tour, during which we were confronted with the unthinkable conditions suffered by the prisoners, before they were shipped off to the New World. The Elmina Castle which exists today has very little to do with the structure originally erected by the Portuguese. It’s been expanded multiple times throughout its history, after changing hands to the Dutch and then to the English. Today, it’s grown into a massive complex, which reaches up to four stories and boasts a view that encompasses all of Elmina. | title | The E-Waste Mega Dump of Agbogbloshie |
| body | You are such a conscientious citizen of the world! You wouldn’t dump that old computer in the bin. Heaven forbid! There’s the ecological future of our glorious planet to think of, let alone your privacy! You’re happy to drive ten miles to the nearest “e-waste” point! You’ll go home, confident that you’ve done the right thing. It’s nice to stop thinking about things once they’re out of your hands… but although we hate to bust your bubble, we think you should know. Right now, your computer is in Agbogbloshie, Ghana. It’s definitely not being deconstructed in an ecologically-sound manner. And it’s probably being hacked into. We learned a lot about the Western scam of “recycling” while we were in Ghana. All those old shirts you’ve so thoughtfully given to a charity? They’re in a dump in Ghana. All the plastic waste you so carefully separate from the paper waste? It’s in a dump in Ghana. And your computers, tablets, phones, and other assorted electronics? They’re in Ghana. In the best case, they’re being burned by children, the thick black clouds poisoning surrounding communities and melted metals running into the ground water. Worst case, they’re being hacked into, and mined for data. And then being burned. Continue reading here: [Mega Dump of Agbogbloshie](https://ghana.for91days.com/agbogbloshie/) |

These enigmatic patterns are a cultural trademark of the Ashanti people, and can be found worked into textiles, furniture, walls, or anything else that might be improved with symbolic embellishment. We visited the capital of Adinkra production, in Ntonso, near Kumasi.

Nobody’s quite sure how long Adinkra symbols have been around, though it stands to reason that they’re as old as (or older than) the Ashanti kingdom. These were royal symbols, stamped into cloth that was only worn by very important Ashanits, on very important occasions. But they’ve since been adopted by Ghanaian society at large, and are now reproduced with pride in a wide variety of places. We even noticed that the lounge in the Accra airport is called the Adinkra Lounge.

There are dozens of symbols, and each means something special. Perhaps the most frequently seen is the “Gye Nyame”, which means “Only God”, and resembles something like a spinal column with pointed horns on either side. There’s also “Dame Dame” which is the name of a board game, and signifies cunning. Adinkra can also have really specific meanings. The “Papani Amma yenhu Kramo”, for example, looks like a looped Gaelic pattern, and means something like “So many people do good things, it’s impossible to distinguish the Muslims”. But this wouldn't be our last visit. Before we left the city, the security guards were able to spot us from afar, shouting "Kwaku! It’s unbelievably beautiful there and a great travel destination throughout the year. There’s just one thing holding us back: Switzerland is so extremely expensive, and honestly, we just can’t afford it. If you’re a resident, you’re eligible for the half tax, which gives you 50% off tickets on trains, gondolas, funiculars, cogwheel trains and many other things as well. As a tourist you have to pay full price or you can buy the Half Tax, which is 120 Franken per person. Either way, doing anything in Switzerland ain’t cheap and we won’t even discuss the cost of eating out or having a glass of wine.

The Swiss can handle the prices, since they have a Swiss income, but for tourists accustomed to prices in Spain or even South East Asia, it's a shock and will make you second-guess doing anything. On our first visit to Lucerne, we paid 148 CHF to go on the Stanserhorn Cabrio Gondola which was awesome, but spending that much money almost ruined the experience. | body | Sex shops have come a long way since their early days of being dark and seedy establishments. Today, they offer a range of products that cater to a variety of tastes and preferences. Whether you're looking for something spicy to heat up your sex life or a unique gift for a friend, a sex shop is a great place to start. One product that I recommend from sex shops is the [best vibrating panties](https://maywoodchamber.com/best-vibrating-panties-with-remote-control/) with remote control. These panties are discreet and comfortable, yet offer an exciting and thrilling experience. You can find a variety of vibrating panties at maywoodchamber However, it's important to note that not all sex shops are created equal. Some may have a limited selection or poor quality products, while others may be downright sketchy. It's important to do your research and choose a reputable sex shop that prioritizes customer satisfaction and safety. |

We politely declined the overtures of a hundred merchants and, squeezing past people balancing food on their head, turned left at the next corner. Then a right and another right? Or wast it straight and then left... anyway, soon we had arrived at the toiletries section.
Continue reading on our Ghana Travel Blog: https://montreal.for91days.com/the-chalet-du-mont-royal-and-kondiaronk-belvedere/ |

| body |

We had heard about a village near Tamale, by the name of Kukuo, known for its pottery-making. It sounded like the perfect opportunity for an excursion, so we went to the bus station, and asked for "Kukuo". Before long we were rumbling along dirt roads, toward the northwest, until our taxi dropped us off at a smattering of adobe huts. It took us about twenty seconds to realize that no pottery-making was taking place here. But there was a group of villagers, absolutely baffled by the sudden appearance of these two white guys.

We'd learn later that there are two Kukuo's in the immediate vicinity of Tamale. We had been taken to Kukuo-Kumbungu. But the pottery village is actually Kukuo-Jekariyili, which happens to be within walking distance of our hotel. Anyway, we were here now in Kukuo-Kumbungu, and decided to make the best of it. There might not have been any pottery, but we'd never been in a random Northern Ghanaian adobe village... so we asked the ensemble of silently-staring rubberneckers whether we could hang out for awhile.

I can't lie -- this was initially an encounter of wicked awkwardness. But it didn't take long for Kukuo to warm up to us. By which I mean: it didn't take long until the village's children to learn about the strange new visitors. Their exuberance was more than a match for their elders' reticence, and we soon felt reasonably comfortable.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ano2ZbwVCc

In America and Germany, the natural reaction of a child when presented with a strange adult is to cocoon into an impenetrable ball of shyness. If you manage to peel them off, you'll find a little hand now holding yours. If you try and shake the hand off, you'll find another child using the distraction to climb up your back. The kids here love strangers... which is exactly how it should be! Spying a new adult should be reason for excitement. The children in our countries have been taught to react with fear.
