      "body": "<div></div>\n<p>It’s impossible to spend any time in Ghana without encountering an Adinkra symbol at least once. These enigmatic patterns are a cultural trademark of the Ashanti people, and can be found worked into textiles, furniture, walls, or anything else that might be improved with symbolic embellishment. We visited the capital of Adinkra production, in Ntonso, near Kumasi.</p>\n\n<center><img src=\"https://ghana.for91days.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/01-Ghana-Adinkra-DSC03163.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5474\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\"/>\n</center><br>\n<p>Nobody’s quite sure how long Adinkra symbols have been around, though it stands to reason that they’re as old as (or older than) the Ashanti kingdom. These were royal symbols, stamped into cloth that was only worn by very important Ashanits, on very important occasions. But they’ve since been adopted by Ghanaian society at large, and are now reproduced with pride in a wide variety of places. We even noticed that the lounge in the Accra airport is called the Adinkra Lounge.</p>\n<p>There are dozens of symbols, and each means something special. Perhaps the most frequently seen is the “Gye Nyame”, which means “Only God”, and resembles something like a spinal column with pointed horns on either side. There’s also “Dame Dame” which is the name of a board game, and signifies cunning. Adinkra can also have really specific meanings. The “Papani Amma yenhu Kramo”, for example,  looks like a looped Gaelic pattern, and means something like “So many people do good things, it’s impossible to distinguish the Muslims”.       "body": "</div></div>\n<p>When we initially visited Ike's Bar and Grill, on our first day in Kumasi, we weren't expecting to immediately discover our favorite hangout spot in down. And we definitely weren't expecting the performance in the sky: every night, thousands upon thousands of bats launch from trees in the nearby zoo, and take to the air. </p>\n\n<center><img src=\"https://ghana.for91days.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/02-Kumasi-Jubilee-Museum-DSC02807.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5540\"/>\n</center><br>\n<p>We went to Ike's on our first evening in Kumasi, simply because it was the closest bar to the <a href=\"https://ghana.for91days.com/okomfo-anokye-sword/\">Okomfo Anokye Sword Site</a>, and we were thirsty. But this wouldn't be our last visit. Before we left the city, the security guards were able to spot us from afar, shouting \"Kwaku! Kwabena!\" as we approached (our Asante names were easier for them to remember). And all the waiters came to know us, learning what we wanted to drink, and what table we wanted to sit at. Well, irritated but also relieved that it was so close. We began in the quiet, largely residential areas found the east of Oxford Street. There weren't a lot of memorable sights in this area, but we enjoyed the peacefulness. One of them can be found in the small town of Gomoa Fetteh, about an hour west of the city. Here, we discovered a paradise of soft sand, towering palm trees, and a total lack of other people. It’s unbelievably beautiful there and a great travel destination throughout the year. There’s just one thing holding us back: Switzerland is so extremely expensive, and honestly, we just can’t afford it. If you’re a resident, you’re eligible for the half tax, which gives you 50% off tickets on trains, gondolas, funiculars, cogwheel trains and many other things as well. As a tourist you have to pay full price or you can buy the Half Tax, which is 120 Franken per person. Either way, doing anything in Switzerland ain’t cheap and we won’t even discuss the cost of eating out or having a glass of wine.\n\n<center><img src=\"https://media.giphy.com/media/1MXM2phI6nqrQ9vyqQ/giphy.gif\" alt=\"Lucerne Gif\" /><br/></center>\n\nThe Swiss can handle the prices, since they have a Swiss income, but for tourists accustomed to prices in Spain or even South East Asia, it's a shock and will make you second-guess doing anything. For example, if you claim that <a href=\"https://iceland.for91days.com/inside-the-volcano/\">traveling to the bottom of an Icelandic volcano</a> wasn’t very special, you're wrong. It was an amazing opportunity, and you definitely loved it. You don’t get an “opinion”. Other experiences, though, are more subjective. And the Bodwease Shrine, outside Kumasi, fits squarely into this category.       "body": "<div></div>\n<p>Kumasi is home to the largest traditional market in West Africa, Kejetia: an unbelievable sprawl of tin-roofed stands that basically comprises its own city-within-a-city. Over a million people visit Kejetia daily, whether to shop, sell or just mingle. We spent a delirious afternoon getting lost within its highly-organized but baffling maze of alleyways.</p>\n\n\n<center><center><img src=\"https://ghana.for91days.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/01-Kumasi-Old-Kejetia-Market-DSC02850.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5210\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\"/>\n</center><br>\n</center><br>\n<p>Diving headfirst into the westernmost alleys of Kejetia, we found ourselves in the section where Kente cloth is sewn and sold. We politely declined the overtures of a hundred merchants and, squeezing past people balancing food on their head, turned left at the next corner. Then a right and another right?       "body": "</div></div>\n<p>We had heard about a village near Tamale, by the name of Kukuo, known for its pottery-making. It sounded like the perfect opportunity for an excursion, so we went to the bus station, and asked for \"Kukuo\". Before long we were rumbling along dirt roads, toward the northwest, until our taxi dropped us off at a smattering of adobe huts. It took us about twenty seconds to realize that no pottery-making was taking place here. But there <em>was</em> a group of villagers, absolutely baffled by the sudden appearance of these two white guys.</p>\n\n<center><img src=\"https://ghana.for91days.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/01-Kukuo-Tamale-DSC03363.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5620\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\"/>\n</center><br>\n<p>We'd learn later that there are <em>two</em> Kukuo's in the immediate vicinity of Tamale. We had been taken to Kukuo-Kumbungu. But the pottery village is actually Kukuo-Jekariyili, which happens to be within walking distance of our hotel. Anyway, we were here now in Kukuo-Kumbungu, and decided to make the best of it. There might not have been any pottery, but we'd never been in a random Northern Ghanaian adobe village... so we asked the ensemble of silently-staring rubberneckers whether we could hang out for awhile.</p>\n<p>I can't lie -- this was initially an encounter of wicked awkwardness. But it didn't take long for Kukuo to warm up to us. By which I mean: it didn't take long until the village's children to learn about the strange new visitors. Their exuberance was more than a match for their elders' reticence, and we soon felt reasonably comfortable.</p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ano2ZbwVCc\n</div>\n<p>In America and Germany, the natural reaction of a child when presented with a strange adult is to cocoon into an impenetrable ball of shyness. But Ghanaian children have no such hesitance. The instant they spy you, they will sprint forward, on a reckless mission to hug your legs. If you manage to peel them off, you'll find a little hand now holding yours. If you try and shake the hand off, you'll find another child using the distraction to climb up your back. The kids here love strangers... which is exactly how it should be! Spying a new adult <em>should</em> be reason for excitement. The children in our countries have been taught to react with fear. Then tell me what you want. Please repeat, I didn't understand. Ahhh... you're looking for \"Chaos\". Well then, you've come to the right place! Welcome to the markets of Accra!</p>\n<h4>Makola Market</h4>\n\n<center><img src=\"https://ghana.for91days.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/01-Accra-Markets-DSC02569.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5076\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\"/>\n</center><br>\n<p>Spilling out onto endless blocks of downtown Accra, Makola is less a \"marketplace\", than a general way of life. You don't really \"go to Makoka Market\" ... you just walk down a street and it slowly starts happening around you, until reaching such a pitch that you can't even take a step without knocking over a plate of snails, or stepping into some poor woman's fufu bowl. </p>\n<p>Makola is overwhelming. We never really dedicated a day to it, but our path between <a href=\"https://ghana.for91days.com/jamestown-accra/\">Jamestown</a> and <a href=\"https://ghana.for91days.com/dabraka/\">Adabraka</a> often brought us into its orbit. And it's nearly impossible to pass through without buying <em>something</em>, even if it's just a coconut or Ghanaian blackberries.       "body": "<div></div>\n<p>Mountains are frequently adorned with intimidating adjectives, meant to warn off anyone foolhardy enough to consider traversing them. Those hills are... ominous! Unforgiving! Treacherous! Cruel! But in the middle of Ghana, you'll find a much more friendly mountain: The Abusa Prayer Mountain or \"Mountain of Mercy\".</p>\n\n<center><img src=\"https://ghana.for91days.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/08-Holy-Mountain-Banko-DSC03037.jpg\" alt=\"Holy Mountain Banko Ghana\" class=\"wp-image-5363\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\"/>\n</center><br>\n<p>After having visited the <a href=\"https://ghana.for91days.com/kente-weaving-bonwire/\">Kente weaving village of Bonwire</a>, we proceeded to Effiduase, which is the regional transport hub of Sekyere East -- the handicraft-heavy region just east of Kumasi. We stayed long enough to munch down some kenkey, before hopping a shared taxi to the smattering of houses known as Banko, where we'd be staying the night at the Moon and Sun Guesthouse.
