In the fight against high inflation, the base interest rate has been raised from zero to 0.25 to 0.5 percent. The Fed is expected to raise interest rates further in small steps in the coming months. The last time the Fed raised interest rates was in 2018.\n\nWith the outbreak of the corona pandemic in March 2020, the Fed cut interest rates in two steps to zero percent and started a large-scale bailout program to protect the economy from a collapse. The US economy is now showing a strong recovery from the crisis and is struggling with sharply rising inflation. That's the highest inflation in more than 40 years, partly due to rising energy prices.\n\n\"Inflation remains well above our long-term target of 2 percent,\" Fed Chairman Powell said. “The rise in crude oil and other commodity prices as a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine will put additional short-term upward pressure on inflation here with us.”\n\nPowell expects interest rates to average 1.9 percent at the end of this year and to 2.8 percent in 2023. A modest amount, but the sanctions make it difficult for Russia to meet its financial obligations. Therefore, it could lead to the bankruptcy of Russia.\n\nIt concerns two government bonds in dollars that Russia issued in 2013. The interest on this must therefore also be paid in dollars, but that is virtually impossible due to international sanctions. Supermarkets are already limiting the number of bottles of sunflower oil that can be purchased per customer; customers at Plus and Jumbo can take a maximum of one bottle with them.\n\nThe director of the trade association of professional fryers, ProFri, calls it almost inevitable that prices in snack bars and cafeterias will rise due to the shortage of sunflower oil and the demand for other oils. But consumers and large users - from snack bars and restaurants to (pastry) bakers - are also wary of other products.\n\nHalf-filled shelves\nUkraine and Russia are major exporters of sunflower oil. For example, two thirds of all sunflower oil that the Netherlands imports comes from Ukraine. Trading in Russian government bonds will resume from tomorrow, but the stock market will remain closed for the time being.\n\nThat costs a lot of money. The price falls are huge and a recovery of the prices is unlikely: the invested capital has largely evaporated.\n\n“\nThe Russian economy is taking a huge hit.\n\nRalph Wessels, ABN Amro\n\"The stock exchange is an important capital market for companies and a well-functioning stock exchange is good for the business climate. That is in the interest of investors and investors,\" says Ralph Wessels, head of investment strategy at ABN Amro. \"The Russian economy is going to take a huge hit, with all these sanctions and companies leaving. ABP has announced that it now wants to get rid of everything, but realizes that selling is currently complicated and actually impossible, because Russia prohibits the sale of Russian interests by foreign investors.\n\nOil giants Shell and BP are hitting the same wall. They want to withdraw from Russia by selling the activities, but the Russians do not want to take it over and so Shell and BP leave empty-handed. BP says it expects a $22 billion write-off, while Shell expects a $3 billion loss.\n\nRussia at war costs investors, investors and companies a lot of money left or right, so the financial pain is not only on the Russian side.",

This also includes Dutch subsidiaries of foreign concerns.\n\nIn export, for example, medicines and flowers are important products. What is taken from Russia are mainly raw materials: oil, coal, iron and steel.",

That says CEO Peter Wennink in conversation with the Financial Times .\n\nThe machines are desperately needed to be able to meet the demand, which continues to grow in the coming years. The sector has been struggling with a major chip shortage for over a year ; there is no short-term solution. In the longer term, additional production capacity should therefore relieve the pressure.\n\nEssential link\nThe Dutch ASML, based in Veldhoven, is an essential link in the global chip sector. The company makes machines that parties such as Intel, Samsung and TSMC need to be able to produce chips.\n\nASML even has a monopoly position in the field of the most advanced chips, which are made with EUV (extreme ultraviolet) machines . The companies can therefore not ignore ASML. And if that group cannot deliver enough, those companies cannot grow fast enough.\n\n\"There will be shortages in the coming year and the year after,\" Wennink told the Financial Times. The company expects to ship more machines, but it will not be enough to meet the demand, the CEO thinks. \"We need to increase our capacity by more than 50 percent. That takes time.\"\n\nWhen asked, a spokesperson tells NOS that this example indicates \"the complexity of the entire supply chain\". When asked whether the situation has worsened, the answer is no. The company is currently expanding capacity and recruiting and onboarding new people.\n\nincrease European production\nJust last week, Intel announced a major investment of tens of billions of euros in the European chip sector. As part of that, it also plans to build a large production campus in Magdeburg, Germany.\n\nFor the time being, it does not appear that this location will also suffer from this; the expectation is that the two factories that will be built there will not start producing chips until 2027. If the prices for gas and electricity differ significantly from the previous month, the monthly amount will also be adjusted, CEO As Tempelman said during a press meeting in response to the annual figures.\n\nThis concerns customers who receive a new variable contract on or after 1 April, for example because their annual contract is expiring.\n\nLast week, Vattenfall already announced that it would adjust the prices in the meantime as of 1 April. Normally, most suppliers adjust prices twice a year, on January 1 and July 1. \"We will move more with the market and thus reduce the risk for ourselves and our customers,\" says Tempelman.\n\nEneco also reported that it would no longer conclude new contracts for the supply of Russian gas. A number of contracts that run until this month or next month will not be extended. About 15 percent of the gas that Eneco supplies to its customers comes from Russia.\n\nenergy poverty\nA long-term contract from 2010 will not be terminated. According to Tempelman, the natural gas that would be released as a result would then be sold for a higher price, so that Russia would earn more money. In addition, the \"affordable security of supply\" of Eneco's customers would be endangered.
