bodyHello @happyfitmum, I do agree that abs are made in the kitchen. Being a fitness fanatic myself, I know how important are oats for your fitness goals. Since they have a lot of fiber they keep you full for a longer period of time thus avoiding your cravings. Loved your recipe. :) check out my blog @rahul516. I also post fitness articles. titleWhy I Love Bikram Yoga
bodyThis end July marks my 4th year anniversary in practicing Bikram yoga. I have completed 400 classes!! I've never imagined I would practise yoga, let alone hot yoga in a 40 degrees room.  The journey started one day when I researched on the studio and found that it was the only one that offered classes in the afternoons at 3pm. Most gyms and Pilate studios only had classes in the mornings and evenings. The only free time I had was after school and before picking up the girls. So this was naturally an option for me.  So, what kept me going? I won't say that bikram yoga is easy and relaxing as many would think. In fact, even after 1 year of practising, I still found it tough. There were some sessions where I was breathless, had to sit through 2-3 postures, felt like I was going to puke or faint, felt like bursting into tears out of despair or even felt like shouting at the teacher to just keep quiet! (In bikram yoga, the teacher only gives the instructions.. she/he does not demonstrate the poses at all). Though challenging, the challenge was probably what also kept me going. I challenged myself constantly to perfect my poses, observing the more experienced fellow yogis or teachers who practise alongside with me. I'm also very thankful to teachers like Adam, Pat, Marcus, Jill, David and Martine who bother to correct me to improve in my poses. Practising bikram yoga allowed me to build self-discipline, resilience and the bull-dog determination as always quoted by teacher Pat, my first ever bikram teacher. The mindset and focus you need while practising will take you to places, or in this case, poses, you will never imagine you could do. The final savasana pose, which is also called dead body pose is always my favorite. Well, not just because it is the easiest, but also it is always a time for me to lay still and reflect... On my day, my life... To talk to God. It gave me ME- space and ME time where I could slow down from the stress from work or being a mummy. Spiritual yeah? :)  As I embark on my next year of practice, I hope to improve on my poses further, build more inner and outer strength and continue to use yoga as an avenue to build self-determination and discipline.  Oh, did I also mention that I am now 3kg below my pre-pregnancy weight? bodyHi all, I'm a 1 day old new blood to Steemit! Wrote my introduction post just yesterday and super thrilled to receive 44 votes till date. As my account name suggest, I am a HAPPY FIT MUM, or rather I am working towards being one. Mother of 2 beautiful girls and married to an awesome support husband. I'm passionate about all things fitness and health related. I'm linking my special post titled "6 Ways to Stay Sane as a Parent" https://steemit.com/parenting/@happyfitmum/6-ways-to-stay-sane-as-a-parent. Reason: Parenthood starts abruptly. title6 Ways to Stay Sane As A Parent
bodyParenthood starts abruptly. No matter how many pre-natal classes you have gone for, you can never prepare enough to take responsibility for the tiny, super-dependent little being placed in your arms for the first time, all fragile. From that moment, you know that someone depends on you, someone actually needs you. The surge of emotions that floods you in the first few hours as new parents, is something probably only parents themselves would understand.  Parenting is an ongoing process, an OTJ (on the job training). And guess what, there is no one-size-fits all way of doing this thing called parenting, simply because, every child is different.  So what can we do to make this process a less daunting one? The following pointers are tips I often give to friends who are soon-to-be mummies, new mummies or even fellow mummies.   1) Follow an online parenting forum There are quite a few online parenting forum groups out there which are easily accessible. (I have added a list below.) When I was pregnant with my first child, I became an active reader of the forum page at singaporemotherhood.com. It was a complete lifesaver for me. There are many interesting things to read in the forum pertaining to children and parenting. What benefitted me the most was to regularly follow the thread where mothers with the exact same EDD month as me would post messages. It is like having a group of khakis in the exact same situation as you, just virtually. Having like-minded online friends provided me with the emotional and mental support I so badly needed. It is from here that I got tips-offs on warehouse sales, baby expos, discounts, events and basically every baby-related lobang. It is definitely heartwarming to have a group of fellow to-be mummies walking through the pregnancy journey with you, all the way to the final delivery month where we then take turns to announce our delivery and post oh-so- cute baby pictures!  These like-minded friends could even end up being your good friends. I will talk more about this in the next point. So do make some time to check out some parenting forum if you haven't!  See below for some: www.asianparents.com www.babycenter.com.sg 2) Turn up for mummy meet-up sessions or play dates For both my pregnancies, I was an active reader in the forum page belonging to my girls' respective EDDs. The only different thing I did during my second pregnancy was to decide to turn up for 2 of the many meet ups that were organized. One was a play date session at a fellow mummy's place and the other: the most significant one, was a fun photoshoot. But little did I know that by turning up for that photoshoot that day, I have gotten myself a closely knitted group of friends. We may have come from different backgrounds and have different occupations. But the common factor, our kids who are all born in the same month, has brought us together. We became good friends and even fondly address each other as sisters. Since that photoshoot, we have been meeting up regularly for outings and playdates, parties, overseas trips, dinner dates, couple dates and even for one of the couple's wedding anniversary celebration!  So, don't underestimate the days of small beginnings.  3) Use whatever babysitting help that is available  Yes, I know this can be a tough decision for some parents (especially mothers). We can get so attached to our kids that we are unwilling to leave them for a minute, even if it's in the care of trusted ones like our parents. Trust me, I was once like this when I was a new parent. I would want to handle everything about the child myself, from bathing, feeding, sleeping, playing etc. And I will get really defensive when my parents or in-laws offer some help to babysit or give advice. After a while, I realize that I was draining myself out and turning into an irritable haggard. I figured that enough was enough and eventually allowed my in-laws to take over some aspects of caring for my child.  It was until I learnt to let go that I discovered that I could actually feel happy and good about myself again. So, if your parents or in-laws are willing to lend a helping hand, (count yourself lucky first!) why not let them take care of your child for one evening? You will feel the liberation as you take time out to pamper yourself or spend some quality time with your spouse.  4) Schedule a date night with your spouse every week  Many married couples, including myself, often fall into this trap of neglecting our spouse after the kids come along. Whether you admit it or not, when you experience fatigue from the constant waking at night or exhaustion from dealing with a cranky kid, the last thing you want to do is to talk or even get close with your spouse.  From "baby I love you", "how's your day?" to "get me the diapers" or "can you just come and help me with the baby?" ... That's how our conversations may change to be. And if we are not careful, this kind of communicaton sets into permanent place and may slowly take the place of the romance and intimacy of our marriage.  This was the situation for me then, until one fine day, we decided that we had to change something - have a time-out from the children for a while every week. And so we decided to make Sunday evenings our date night. An evening with just us, no kids. (Again, I want to say I'm blessed to have my in-laws to help). In the precious 3 hours or so, we would have a nice dinner, catch up on each other's life, share our thoughts and also catch a movie. We have not looked back since.  My hubby would tell you how happy he is to have his wife exclusively for that 3 hours. 5) Plan at least 1 couple-only holiday once a year.  With the same reasons as above, I also feel it is important to get away from the kids and chill somewhere away from home. Really, the destination and duration do not matter as much as who you are with. Going for getaways  overseas (Batam also counted) have allowed my hubby and myself to re-connected with each other and at the same time, rejuvenate ourselves from the hustle and bustle of work and kids. Of course, as the wife of a property agent, being overseas also means his handphone will stop ringing for a while and he talks only to me, instead of his clients or working partners.  Well, if you feel guilty about leaving your children back at home while you enjoy yourself, you can always plan a second holiday with the family. So, this has been our SOP for the last 2 years: 2 overseas holiday trips a year: one with kids and one without kids. This has worked really well for us and we even managed to influence some of our friends to do likewise.  6) Stay connected with your loved ones and friends (and God as well) The final point is, in my opinion, the most important. Many married couples tend to drift away from their family or friends when kids come along. Yes, the reasons are valid: "Kids are sick." "We can't stay late coz it's the kids' bedtime". "It's too far. My kids will get cranky on the long journey". "My kids need to sleep on their own bed" etc etc and the list goes on. Because of these reasons, we miss out on family dinners/ gatherings, stop visiting our elderly grandparents, stop meeting up with old friends, or stop attending church. I found that when we revolve our lives only around our kids, we miss out on other important roles we play, like being a daughter, a friend or even a minister at church. Our lives lose some balance and we feel a void somewhere.   The good thing for me is that my bunch of good friends are also parents with small children. So when we meet up, while the kids keep themselves entertained with one another, the adults also get to chat and catch up. I don't know about you, but good catching up (in church term, fellowship) makes my soul happy. Good friends are rare and friendship needs maintenance. And so, do make an effort to maintain that connection with family and friends. You will too, experience that difference.

bodyThere is a saying that abs are made in the kitchen. I can’t agree more. When we were in our teenage and young adults years, we couldn’t care less about what we ate. My brother and I – we were the infamous instant noodles duo. We even often boasted that we had perfected the skill of cooking a “world-grade”, “Michelin Star” bowl of instant noodles. We lived to eat (instant noodles). Fast forward to present. It was a healthy mummy program that opened up to a world of clean eating for me. Don’t get me wrong, I’m no strict vegan or calorie-counting fanatic. But I do take note of what I give my body and try not to test its limits. And so, all that reading up on clean eating introduced me to OATS. I used to feel squeamish whenever I saw my father in-law make his daily bowl of breakfast oats, and now I’m pretty high on these oats myself, overnight oats to be exact. WHAT ARE OATS? Oats is a type of hardy grain able to withstand poor soil conditions. They contain a fiber (beta-glucan) which is known for its cholesterol reducing capabilities. In fact, I read that for individuals with high cholesterol, consuming just 3g (or one bowl) of oats lowers the total cholesterol by 8-23%, thus reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke. Well, oats actually come in many forms – I won’t bore you with the details but you can read here for more. Presently, we use organic rolled oats in our overnight oats breakfast. Rolled oats as the name suggests, is where the kernel of the oat (oat grout) are extracted, steamed and ROLLED. (Not really important info here but it makes you sound smart). What got me full steam on oats was an overnight oats workshop Well, let’s just say I left the workshop with a renewed mindset that oats (when mixed with the right ingredients) could actually taste decent.Hubby and I decided that it wasn’t a bad idea to replace our “char bee hoon” breakfast with oats on alternate mornings. (Alternate coz we still have a life. haha!) Best part is, most of the ingredients are already in your kitchen/fridge. All you to do is mix some oats, milk, sunflower seeds, chopped almond and chia seeds in a jar, put the concoction in the fridge while you get your beauty sleep. Then ta-da! you get your healthy hearty breakfast. Top it up with some sliced bananas, blueberries, strawberries and you are ready to start your day! In fact, the combinations possibilities of ingredients are infinite. In other words, you can make your own unique overnight oats and name it after you. Cool or what??? Honestly, I never anticipate liking them that much, but they took me by surprise. It could be the comforting flavor of milk and honey or the creaminess of the oats, but this overnight oats actually taste pretty good. ![3353f5_e1bb3bbf8b1747138f54bf3e91ab66d8.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmTKRmKNLg8kyvrqxVNteUVnUVVxHnwnUJ7wo3ar1Sg7CU/3353f5_e1bb3bbf8b1747138f54bf3e91ab66d8.jpg) Recipe: 2 tablespoons rolled oats (not instant) 1 tablespoons chia seeds 1 tablespoon sunflower seeds 1 cup of soy milk/ almond milk or any other low fat milk 1 teaspoon honey 1 tablespoon cranberries Soak everything for at least 3 hours or overnight in the fridge. Toppings: 1 banana (sliced) Blueberries Strawberries or any other fruits you fancy. (No toppings in my picture as I ran out of fruits!) So be adventurous. Make one today and perhaps, you’ll be singing.. Oats, I did it again.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m no strict vegan or calorie-counting fanatic. But I do take note of what I give my body and try not to test its limits.\nAnd so, all that reading up on clean eating introduced me to OATS. I used to feel squeamish whenever I saw my father in-law make his daily bowl of breakfast oats, and now I’m pretty high on these oats myself, overnight oats to be exact.\n\nWHAT ARE OATS?\nOats is a type of hardy grain able to withstand poor soil conditions. They contain a fiber (beta-glucan) which is known for its cholesterol reducing capabilities. In fact, I read that for individuals with high cholesterol, consuming just 3g (or one bowl) of oats lowers the total cholesterol by 8-23%, thus reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke.\nWell, oats actually come in many forms – I won’t bore you with the details but you can read here for more. Presently, we use organic rolled oats in our overnight oats breakfast. Rolled oats as the name suggests, is where the kernel of the oat (oat grout) are extracted, steamed and ROLLED. (Not really important info here but it makes you sound smart).\n\nWhat got me full steam on oats was an overnight oats workshop Well, let’s just say I left the workshop with a renewed mindset that oats (when mixed with the right ingredients) could actually taste decent.Hubby and I decided that it wasn’t a bad idea to replace our “char bee hoon” breakfast with oats on alternate mornings. (Alternate coz we still have a life. haha!)\nBest part is, most of the ingredients are already in your kitchen/fridge. All you to do is mix some oats, milk, sunflower seeds, chopped almond and chia seeds in a jar, put the concoction in the fridge while you get your beauty sleep. Then ta-da! you get your healthy hearty breakfast. Top it up with some sliced bananas, blueberries, strawberries and you are ready to start your day! In fact, the combinations possibilities of ingredients are infinite. In other words, you can make your own unique overnight oats and name it after you. Cool or what???\n\nHonestly, I never anticipate liking them that much, but they took me by surprise. bodyI have a problem right now. Breakfast. They are always a headache when it comes to preparing healthy breakfast for myself and my family. So I have decided to compile a list of make ahead breakfasts that I am planning to try. Hope you will try them too! Breakfast #1: Egg Muffins RECIPE FOR EGG MUFFINS (serves 6) Ingredients: 6 whole eggs Chicken breast, thinly shredded Green leafy vegetables of your choice Grated cheese Carrots or tomatoes, cubed Olive oil - 1 teaspoon Steps: 1. Sauteed all vegetables in olive oil until slightly tender for about 5 minutes 2. Add shredded chicken breast into pan, mix with the vegetables 3. Pre heat oven to 180 Celsius or 350 Fahrenheit 4. Whisk eggs 5. Transfer mixed vegetables into muffin tray, followed by whisked egg 6. Sprinkle with grated cheese 7. Bake in oven for 10 minutes DONE! How to store: Pack individually in kitchen wrap and store in freezer. Every morning just warm them up and they are ready to eat! Breakfast #2: Banana Muffins RECIPE FOR BANANA MUFFINS (makes 12 muffins) 2/3 cups rolled oats 2 medium very riped bananas, mashed 1/2 cup unsweetned applesauce 2 large egggs 1/2 cup of greek yoghurt 1 tsp vanilla extract 1 tbsp of baking powder 1/4 tsp of baking soda 45g of chopped almond nuts or seeds or dried fruit of your choice Steps: 1. Mix dry ingredients - oats, baking powder, baking soda in a bowl. 2. Add wet ingredients - mashed bananas, greek yoghurt and applesauce and vanilla extract 3. Mix dry and wet ingredients together 4. Spray muffin cups with a little cooking spray 5. Transfer mixture into 12 muffin cups 5. Bake in oven for 15 minutes 6. When done, set aside to cool for 10 minutes How to store: Banana muffins can be stored in a container in the fridge or in freezer.       "body": "I have a problem right now. \n\nBreakfast. \n\nThey are always a headache when it comes to preparing healthy breakfast for myself and my family. \n\nSo I have decided to compile a list of make ahead breakfasts that I am planning to try. Hope you will try them too! \n\n\nBreakfast #1: Egg Muffins\n\nRECIPE FOR EGG MUFFINS (serves 6) \nIngredients: \n6 whole eggs \nChicken breast, thinly shredded \nGreen leafy vegetables of your choice\nGrated cheese\nCarrots or tomatoes, cubed \nOlive oil - 1 teaspoon\n\nSteps: \n1. Sauteed all vegetables in olive oil until slightly tender for about 5 minutes\n2. Add shredded chicken breast into pan, mix with the vegetables \n3. Pre heat oven to 180 Celsius or 350 Fahrenheit \n4. Whisk eggs \n5. Transfer mixed vegetables into muffin tray, followed by whisked egg \n6. Sprinkle with grated cheese\n7. Bake in oven for 10 minutes\n\nDONE! \n\nHow to store: \nPack individually in kitchen wrap and store in freezer. \nEvery morning just warm them up and they are ready to eat! \n\nBreakfast #2: Banana Muffins\n\nRECIPE FOR BANANA MUFFINS  (makes 12 muffins)\n2/3 cups rolled oats\n2 medium very riped bananas, mashed\n1/2 cup unsweetned applesauce\n2 large egggs\n1/2 cup of greek yoghurt\n1 tsp vanilla extract\n1 tbsp of baking powder\n1/4 tsp of baking soda \n45g of chopped almond nuts or seeds or dried fruit of your choice \n\nSteps: \n1. Mix dry ingredients - oats, baking powder, baking soda in a bowl.\n2. Add wet ingredients - mashed bananas, greek yoghurt  and applesauce and vanilla extract \n3. Mix dry and wet ingredients together \n4. Spray muffin cups with a little cooking spray \n5. Transfer mixture into 12 muffin cups\n5. Bake in oven for 15 minutes \n6. When done, set aside to cool for 10 minutes \n\nHow to store: \nBanana muffins can be stored in a container in the fridge or in freezer. \n\nBreakfast #3: Overnight Fruity Oats \n\nRECIPE FOR OVERNIGHT FRUITY OATS (makes 1 serving) \nIngredients: \n1/2 cup of Greek Yoghurt\n1/3 cup of uncooked rolled oats\n2 tbsp of soy or low fat milk\n1 cup of frozen berries or any other fruits of your choice\n1/2 tbsp of mixed seeds or nuts \n\nSteps: \n1. Mix oats, yogurt, milk and seeds/nuts in a bowl \n2. Fill 1/3 of jar with yogurt mixture.\n3. Top up with frozen berries or fruits. \n4. Add another layer of yogurt mixture\n5.
