| body | I came across Senvix Reviews https://senvixai.org/ while comparing different platforms that support users in Australia. The comments seemed genuine, so I decided to explore it myself. I liked how it presented market updates clearly without unnecessary distractions. It feels reliable and well-structured. I’ve been using it for short trades during the day, and everything has been consistent so far. It’s always good to see a platform that doesn’t overcomplicate things, especially when you’re just trying to stay on top of your assets. |

| body | <div class="pull-left"> https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmVL4mmgwrkDF7BytR8SxYXMzNpS5evKAYaNA1AJCVUAPh/Book.png </div> A writer was telling me of some copyright issues they have had with some of their work, which led me to wonder what assistance my be offered by the relatively new **blockchain** and other **distributed ledger technology**, DLT, projects to proving copyright and author ownership. Below are some of my findings along with some traditional and conventional solutions for comparison. #### *A short disclaimer* - These solutions are only an investigation in the hope that they may be useful to the reader, I have not tried them, so ***do your own research*** and use what best suits your needs and circumstances. It is not a comprehensive list and you may discover more options or other ways of doing things. I suggest to keep things appropriately simple, for some that may be a one off use of a low tech solution, for others it my be a combination of solutions and regular use of a blockchain service. Below I use the word **material** to refer to the creative work on which you claim copyright, that may be a written document, artwork, photographs, images, etc. ## Traditional Low Tech Solutions <div class="pull-right"> https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmba1u3zm2y6AUUtAcukm3bFWq9NJjnAToQ71FJV71jhv6/xed_accessories-text-editor.png </div> Established tried and tested methods that effectively require only pen and paper, no electricity or high technology required. #### Send to yourself by *registered* post a copy of the copyright material - And do not open the envelope or package on receipt, this will provide proof of posting and a date stamp. The UK [Royal Mail Signed For](https://www.royalmail.com/personal/uk-delivery/signed-for-1st-class) is one service that could be used for this. - The problem with this is that the package may be opened only once, in the presence of a legal representative and other relevant parties, to provide evidence, thus subsequent copyright infringements may be harder to prove. #### Lodge a copy of the copyright material with a solicitor - A tried and tested solution that could be used on multiple copyright infringements if the need arises. - However there is likely to be a regular maintenance fee from the solicitor and this may become expensive for multiple items. ## Conventional Computer Based Solutions <div class="pull-right"> https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmeQb7TgHyn6Qg93sRTfLLdpEGAo89kmzPzfPaPAQedt1s/terminology_terminology.png </div> These solutions here onward require electricity, computers, an internet connection and due diligence in storing your usernames and passwords. #### Send yourself an email containing the material on which you claim copyright. - This will date stamp the material and the email metadata will contain other identifying information. #### Upload the copyright material to [Archive.org](https://archive.org/). - Thus creating a record of the material with an associated date. Archive.org describes itself as: > The Internet Archive, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, is building a digital library of Internet sites and other cultural artefacts in digital form. - There is a *decentralised web* version of the Internet Archive here [dweb.me](https://dweb.me/arc/archive.org/details/home). For both of the above it would be wise to provide additional evidence of copyright by **digitally signing** the material using [GPG](https://gnupg.org/), the GNU Privacy Guard. That may seem a little scary for most users hence the blockchain solutions in the next section may seem easier, however read on for now. Instructions on how to use GPG via the command line are given here [https://www.gnupg.org/gph/en/manual/x135.html](https://www.gnupg.org/gph/en/manual/x135.html), but there are some graphical interfaces available to make life easier: - [GPG Suite](https://gpgtools.org/) for Apple systems. - [Gpg4win](https://www.gpg4win.de/index.html) for Microsoft Windows systems. - [Kleopatra](https://kde.org/applications/utilities/org.kde.kleopatra) is one option for Linux systems. Kleopatra is also used in Gpg4win. ## Blockchain or other DLT Solutions <div class="pull-right"> https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmdneZUynCkny7h1v9JSupApDmnYTaEPJy6X8qEG3Kx3zV/Computer-Cloud.png </div> These are likely to be even easier options for you than the *Conventional Computer Based* options given above, but require an extra step or two in the otherwise simple account set up - this should make your account and data more secure. #### [Po.et](https://www.po.et/) - Which you can sign up for via the [Explorer link](https://explorer.poetnetwork.net/signup), is a > shared, open, universal ledger designed to record immutable and timestamped metadata and ownership information for digital creative assets. The [Blockstack](https://blockstack.org/) platform is a decentralised computing network and app ecosystem, it has a number of **dApps** (decentralised Apps) that you may like to consider for proof of copyright, including : #### [Blockusign](https://blockusign.co/) > Encrypted Document Signing and Digital Notary - enables you to : > - Sign documents and maintain ownership of data like it's on your own encrypted laptop. > - Prove a document was signed with NO need for a Notary service or Lawyer. #### [Blockright](https://blockright.moochain.com/) - A decentralised copyright registration platform. > The author may register their creative work on the Blockchain, using the timestamp on the Blockchain to claim the copyright of the work, no need to use a third-party organisation. ## Blochain Solutions for Images|Photographs <div class="pull-right"> https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmaCQyVYgBd6hySsBta7zhCxmLDDr5fQKJciYyEYDoHpHM/gthumb_gthumb.png </div> #### [Binded](https://binded.com/) - Provides a private copyright vault with a unique fingerprint for each image saved permanently to the blockchain and gives a copyright certificate as proof which can help protect you against copyright infringement. ## People and Identity <div class="pull-right"> https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmUSVFYiupgLsVxQwsJUieHBusjVAwsetnCxhDQ4tYXJUk/1f427.png </div> An author of some creative work may need to prove their identity in order to protect their copyrighted material, here is one option that may help: #### [Civic](https://www.civic.com) - A secure identity ecosystem. Civic provides the tools that enable people to take control and protect their identity. @heiditravels (known as [Cryto Tips](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCavTvSwEoRABvnPtLg0e6LQ) on YouTube) has written about it here: [https://steemit.com/cryptocurrency/@heiditravels/encrypt-your-identity-with-civic](https://steemit.com/cryptocurrency/@heiditravels/encrypt-your-identity-with-civic) ## Backups ! #### *Usernames, Passwords, Passphrases, Key Pairs, Brain Keys, etc.* For the computer, blockchain or other distributed ledger technology solutions it will be necessary to securely store passwords, passphrases, keys, ID's, usernames or other information required to access accounts and files. Furthermore you may need to keep these details **forever** and pass them on to the next generation! Print out duplicate copies of these details and store them safely and securely in separate places. <div class="pull-right"> https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmPrGZ3jquvrJdyXDqr1cP7pKrtUVWAHKrsYLGfGRKva4u/image.png </div> For storing the details on a file on a computer I use [KeePassXC](https://keepassxc.org/) which produces an encrypted file (database) accessed with a password or key file. Make backups this file and store on a separate device to your computer. Should disaster strike your printed details and backup files give you a better chance of recovery and maintaining access to your data. ## Thanks for reading I hope the above will be of interest or of use to you. ### Related Resources [Earth ID](https://www.myearth.id/) "provide a Safe and Secure Identity to all Human Beings, through the power of Blockchain and Cryptography". | title | OpenStreetMap for Sarawak and Beyond |
| body | *The following is an article I wrote originally for [The Borneo Post](https://www.theborneopost.com) newspaper, hence my focus on Sarawak, but I have adapted it for you to read here as it is applicable wherever you are on our planet:* # [OpenStreetMap](https://openstreetmap.org) for Sarawak and Beyond Get out and about and have some fun and leisurely time mapping your locality, or mapping anywhere else on the planet that takes your fancy, it’s gratifying, easy to do and benefits everyone. [](http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Logo) ## What it is There is a global geographic information and mapping project called **OpenStreetMap**, OSM for short. It relies on individuals like you to edit the map with additions, updates and corrections and to collect ground truth data and supply local knowledge to create a map that has a greater level of detail than Google, Bing or Yahoo maps and is often as good or better than official or commercially produced maps. Furthermore OSM is usually more up to date as changes can be implemented quickly by people like yourself. You can find the project at [http://www.openstreetmap.org/](http://www.openstreetmap.org) (there is a similar project at [http://www.fosm.org/](http://www.fosm.org) ). I first heard about the OSM project via the open source community and [Linux user group meetings](https://lug.org.uk/) whilst in the UK, from whom I discovered there are numerous keen mappers around the globe who have contributed a significant amount of detail that you see on the maps. ## Importance OpenStreetMap is important for a number of reasons; it is used in [SatNav](https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/satnav) satellite navigation systems, so by keeping the map up to date these navigation systems can keep you and others on the correct route. For example, if a road nearby is temporarily closed for a few weeks, for major repairs, you can edit the map to mark the road as closed for the duration of the work. [](http://www.osmand.net/) A navigation app that can benefit from your mapping efforts is the excellent [OsmAnd](http://www.osmand.net/) map and navigation system for Android and Apple devices, it is available via the usual app stores and from [F-Droid](https://f-droid.org/en/packages/net.osmand.plus/) (F-Droid provides vetted Free and Open Source Software applications for the Android platform). [](https://hotosm.org/) Another important use is in humanitarian operations; you may have heard of the [Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team](https://hotosm.org/), HOT. When a disaster strikes a global network of thousands of HOT volunteers mobilise to map the areas impacted and update OpenStreetMap. They make use of donated aerial and satellite imagery of before and after a disaster and input from relief workers on the ground, thus making OSM a great aid to the humanitarian relief. Their efforts were especially valuable to the rescue and relief teams after the Haiti, Nepal and Mexico earthquakes and in other crises, such as the ebola outbreak in West Africa, mapping refugee camps, volcanic eruption, hurricane or flood devastated areas. For other important reports and uses of OSM search, for example, the [BBC website](https://www.bbc.co.uk/search?q=openstreetmap), for news items about *openstreetmap*. ## Getting started Creating an OSM [account](https://www.openstreetmap.org/user/new) simply needs you to specify an email address and password, so that you can login to edit the map. Editing the map is really easy to do as the website has in-browser editors, called iD and Potlatch, which are reasonably intuitive to use. However it is worth familiarising yourself first and to help you learn OSM mapping you may like to view the [learnOSM](http://learnosm.org/) website. [](http://vespucci.io) If you are working from an Android tablet computer then [Vespucci](http://vespucci.io), is an excellent OSM editor that is easy to use, providing you read the instructions. ## What to add There is a huge amount of detail that you can add, depending on your time and enthusiasm. For example tree species, size and other details may be added, overhead wires, walls, fences, gates, bridges, grassed areas, banks, your favourite coffee shop, manhole cover locations, fire hydrants and much more, not forgetting the open drains. > For some reason Malaysia is obsessed with open drains, but using an underground pipe would be more effective, efficient, safer, cleaner, more hygienic and less costly. For navigation purposes it’s important to ensure roads, tracks, footpaths, cycleways etc. all link up correctly and details of name, width, direction and surface material may also help, especially for cyclists or wheelchair users. There have been many changes to Sarawak in recent years, sadly with much destruction of the flora and fauna thus creating a sterile and lifeless areas, consequently there are many updates and additions required on OSM. > As a related aside, I don't know why so called *development* cannot integrate with the natural environment rather than destroying it, it would result in a better quality of life and environment for us all to live in. It would be good to leave some avenues of trees and small pockets of forest, the canopy of trees can keep car parks, vehicles and streets cooler, thus reducing fuel costs and energy required for air conditioning. To aid your mapping you can use the [GPS](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_Positioning_System) (Global Positioning System) location receiver built in to your mobile phone or tablet computer to find the location coordinates of trees and objects. The OsmAnd app has an option to allow you to capture GPS tracks. These can later be uploaded to the OSM website and overlaid on the map editor to assist you with edits. Under some objects, such as trees, GPS may not work well so can walk around the perimeter of an object to form a GPS track loop to estimate its location. However when using the editors, satellite or aerial imagery may be displayed as a background image as a guide for you to add your mapping detail, so GPS location data is less critical than it used to be. ## From where to do your mapping You do not have to physically be in the same place that you are mapping, although it helps; My first foray into OSM mapping was of [Kuching](https://www.openstreetmap.org/search?query=kuching#map=13/1.5574/110.3440) in Sarawak, an area I knew well having spent much time there. There was nothing on OpenStreetMap of this area a few years ago, until I made the first edits from the comfort of my accommodation in the UK, since then others have contributed a tremendous amount of detail and it is now possible to use a SatNav satellite navigation system with OSM based applications, such as OsmAnd, to find your way around, but there is still much detail to add. At this time of writing Google Maps still have more detail of the Kuching area and Sarawak than OSM, but with your help OSM can overtake, as it has done in other areas of the world. You may even receive some [cryptocurrency](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cryptocurrency) for your efforts, in the form of [Bitcoin](https://bitcoin.org/), if you register on the [OsmAnd Live](https://www.osmand.net/osm_live) website. So if there is place you know well get out and about, explore your environment and indulge in some mapping of your planet. ____ [*As a footnote I would like to pay tribute to the late Roland Duncan Klabu, amongst his many achievements he was a journalist and former head of the newsroom and newsreader at [Cats Radio](https://catsfm.my), despite serious illness that lead to his demise he proofread this article for me suggesting amendments and improvements.
