It is a very special scene, which I identify with this short paragraph from the book:\n\n“One has known about Bolívar in history, but prefers what the people say and do; is more than one. You see it very official in the square, in the portraits, in the monuments, but you need to know it humane and proper. Su figura es un símbolo identitario inequívoco y se ve reflejado de muchas formas en el complejo imaginario social de los venezolanos, y hoy, 237 años después, lo conmemoramos. \n\nHice esta selección de obras de un libro del año 1993. Se llama 65 hombres para Bolívar, el Libertador de las mujeres, y en él se pueden apreciar las preciosísimas obras de artistas populares de varios rincones de Venezuela, en una compilación hecha por Mariano Díaz. \n\nEl “arte popular” se refiere generalmente a aquellas expresiones artísticas propias de las clases populares, de personas que no han tenido acceso al campo académico del arte, pero que de manera tradicional han realizado creaciones que por su belleza y destreza en la ejecución no podrían ser consideradas artesanales. \n\nCreo que Venezuela es un país muy rico en la diversidad cultural de su expresión plástica, y esta es una corriente del arte venezolano que disfruto apreciar, como muchas otras más. \n\nDe todas las fotografías que comparto de este libro, que contiene más de 100 obras, diría que mis preferidas son “Bolívar en Coro” (1982), por la técnica que utilizó la artista Oliva Rodríguez para recrear en un hermoso tapiz las calles coloniales de Coro, con sus clásicos ventanales y sus caminitos empedrados, y lo que más me gusta: los colores ondulantes que irradia ese fascinante sol.  \n\nY también “Bolívar en la fiesta patronal” (1992), el clima de la fiesta es sencillamente adorable, vemos a un Simón que alza sus brazos entre coloridas serpentinas, y quizá sea el aguerrido Palomo, uno de sus más queridos caballos, es ese encantador animal adornado de flores. Yo no soy católica, pero mi educación básica transcurrió en un colegio de monjas, fui bautizada siendo una bebé y hasta hice mi primera comunión en la misma iglesia donde acudí a la ceremonia de mis primos. \n\nPor ahí dicen que para que tus hijos sean ateos, la mejor forma que puedes encontrar es hacerlos estudiar en un colegio católico. Esto me hace gracia, y creo que hay algo de razón. Yo no me considero atea, principalmente por mi fascinación por las manifestaciones populares de mi país, híbrida con las creencias ancestrales de culturas indígenas y africanas, y la religión católica, a las que les hace resistencia en sus propias e ingeniosas maneras.  \n\nMuchas veces la religión acompaña una tradición familiar como un decálogo de pequeños rituales y extensas oraciones que no tienen un asidero real en nuestro ser más profundo (o engagement, para utilizar términos de estos tiempos), y termina siendo desplazada mientras crecemos y nos vinculamos un poco más con la crueldad de su historia. \n\nEl cura de esa iglesia, de la manera más grosera que pudo encontrar, prohibió que los familiares tomaran fotografías en la ceremonia. Para que la cámara no se quedara fría, decidimos ir al Museo de Arte Contemporáneo que está a pocos metros, mientras otros miembros de la familia acompañaban a nuestros primos.  \n\nEn el museo llamó mucho nuestra atención la serie de bustos del escultor venezolano Javier Level, quien describió su propia obra como seres fantásticos que presentan marcas innegables de un sincretismo total: lo ancestral latinoamericano, lo indígena, lo europeo y lo africano. \n\nY sí, como el autor lo planteaba, parecían hallazgos arqueológicos de una civilización desconocida, pero también representaciones de seres manipulados por la ciencia moderna.
