| title | Hellboy In Hell: Review and Interview with Mike Mignola by Eblison Grun |
| body | ====================================== Five years ago, Mike Mignola's Hellboy In Hell came out and wowed Mike Mignola fans. With the recent release of the Library Edition of Hellboy In Hell, I dug up a little something I wrote and an interview I did with Mignola. Over the years, his work has remained timeless and his style consistent. Check out what he had to say. ======================================= January 11th, 2013 It's nice when a comic creator finds himself loving the character or the book he's working on so much that he just doesn't want to quit. Mike Mignola is that guy. I had the pleasure of speaking with Mr. Mignola recently, and he had much to say about Hellboy In Hell, his current series, and how he likes being able to do what he's always wanted to do... draw monsters. I got the feeling from our conversation, that after telling stories about the same character for 20 years, Mignola is rewarding himself by opening up his own playground of unlimited surrealism wherein he can create and destroy, twist and evolve, and draw all the monsters he wants. Trust me, he's off to a good start with this new title, and the playing has only just begun. Hellboy in Hell visits old friends and enemies, a puppet show version of A Christmas Carol, and takes a look at the circumstances behind Hellboy's birth. It explores the details of the character that make him human while he wanders around a strange and fascinating place surrounded by demons. Mike Mignola and I also spoke about the covers for the classic Batman story arc, "Dark Knight, Dark City" and the 3 issue Batman Elseworlds series, The Doom That Came To Gotham. His writing on the Elseworlds series and art on the covers for both stories, reflected a dark Lovecraftian flare in his style that made Mignola a fitting choice for his work on Batman. Years later, fans still ask when he's going to return to working with the "Dark Knight Detective." Here's the interview: https://soundcloud.com/crotcube/hellboy-creator-mike-mignola?in=crotcube/sets/interviews-outside-the-cube ====================================== |

| title | 30 Second Book Reviews That Are Outside the Cube |
| body | Recently, I was asked to come up with six book reviews that I could give verbally in 30 seconds or less. It's all part of a holiday bookstore event, wherein the reviewers have half a minute to give their review or get yanked off the stage like a failed contestant on the Gong Show. Here are my 30 second reviews. One of the books I came up with was a little hard cover edition of Agatha Christie's Murder on the Orient Express. The book was good; the review, short and sweet, but it came out to longer than 30 seconds. Timing myself, I ended with 37 seconds and some change. I'm still tempted to use it. Agatha Christie's Murder on the Orient Express for Parents & Grandparents This book was written in 1934, but it remains timeless. It's main character is a private investigator who has two things going for him: One- he's brilliant at solving mysteries, two- his mustache. When there's a murder on this train crossing Europe, Hercule Poirot is the guy on the case. The reason this is the perfect book for your parents or grandparents, is that Christie is great with character development and because of it, this book feels timeless. Also, this edition is pocket sized, low priced, and has a classic hard cover design that goes great on any shelf. The next book on my list was Cinemaps. It's a book of maps of all your favorite movies. It's not easy giving a review of this book without taking the time to show someone the pages, but I don't tend to do things the easy way. Cinemaps by Andrew DeGraff for In-Laws & Co-Workers This is the book lovers book for people who love movies. Cinemaps has maps of over 30 films that you love, including Star Wars, Wizard of Oz, Princess Bride, Jaws and Breakfast Club. With each map, the book's creator includes paths that the major characters actually take. Want to see how the great-white shark chased that little boat, before getting blown to bits? How much territory did Billy cover on his big wheel in the Shining's Overlook Hotel? It's all in this book and it beautifully illustrated. This is the coffee table book that people will look through, talk about, and use as a movie guide the next time they turn on their favorite flick. Because it's not just maps. It also includes wonderful little secrets about the movies and expands upon what we already know from watching the movie previously. This is a great book for In-Laws and Co-Workers, because it's a magical conversation piece. Meddling Kids was also a great book. I loved it so much, that I naturally go into a detailed description and a list of all the things that make it great. This 30 second thing is murder and I decided that I'll give the review if they have to drag me off kicking and screaming. Meddling Kids by Edgar Cantero for Sibblings, Besties, & Buddies Meddling Kids is a fantastic Horror/Comedy. It's essentially what would happen if the Scooby Gang grew up and moved on, leading dysfunctional lives after years of busting criminals posing as monsters. The author has fun with all the Saturday Morning Cartoon cliches and shows us that as we've grown out of cartoons, so have those characters. You're going to laugh with recognition of the tropes and the characters. You're going to be drawn into the incitement as these old friends get pulled into another mystery, one with real, and you're going to love these people you feel you've known for decades. This book includes but isn't about they mystery and monsters. It's about taking that group from the old cartoons and giving them some closure with their final case. It's about finally finding the thing you've been after all your life. Trust me, you're laugh, you'll shiver, you'll pass this book on to your best friend. Meant more of a joke than anything, I decided to throw some fun into the mix by offering up the Kama Sutra Colouring Book as a suggestion for sweethearts. As this blog is being written before the actual event, I'm still not sure how well it will go over, but I'm hoping for a laugh and hoping that it sells. The Kama Sutra Colouring Book for Sweeties There's nothing like staying in with your sweetie. Put a log on the fire, pour a glass of wine, put on that Barry White, and bust out the colored pencils. Couples are best together when they can laugh and love and pass knowing little glances. That kind of thing is part of why they're together in the first place. So curl up with your sweetie this holiday and together, discover something fun, funny, and colorful. This book is full of amazing erotic scenarios, that you and your partner can laugh over while coloring. After all, real love is exciting and sweet and funny. So this is the perfect stocking stuffer for your loved one. No shame, no judgment, just this book and a box of crayons. For the teens, I decided to dip into a pool that's new to me. I've never read Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy, but I thought I'd start by reading the prequel, The Book of Dust. This timed in at under 30 seconds but, honestly, I felt like I was floundering. Did I give enough information to make it sound good? We'll see. The Book of Dust- La Belle Sauvage by Phillip Pullman for Teens Book one of a new trilogy by Phillip Pullman. It takes place 10 years before The Golden Compass, and centers around a group of young people protecting an infant named Lyra, while in a canoe called La Belle Sauvage. Perfect for teens who are into fantasy and who read Pullman's books when they were younger. Also, this book deals with the freedom of speech. In it, the Magesterium or the Church, actively and violently suppresses heresy. Teens will love it and relate. Pullman is telling them that their voices matter, that what they say is important. Last but certainly not least is a book for the little ones. The original book I chose was wonderfully illustrated, it was educational, and it made me laugh. However, that book isn't easy to get ahold of. My runner up was actually just as funny, and might be just as good for an expecting dad as it is for the tots themselves. Mustache Baby for the Little Ones Mustache Baby is a cool little board book about a baby born with a mustache. The doctor gives his parents the warning to look out for how the mustache grows. If it curls on the ends, he'll be headed for a life of crime, but if it stays full and respectable, the baby will grow to be a law abiding citizen. Of course, the baby adopts both styles. He catches kids with their hands in the cookie jar and becomes a cereal criminal. Little kids will love that this baby has a mustache. It'll get giggles right away. And dad's with mustaches will love reading this book to their kids. I know I'm tempted to, and my daughter is in high school. ------------------------- Update*** ------------------------- Come back here December 10th, for an update on how the 30 Second Book Reviews went down. Until next time, catch you outside the cube! |

"title": "30 Second Book Reviews That Are Outside the Cube",
"body": "\n\nRecently, I was asked to come up with six book reviews that I could give verbally in 30 seconds or less. It's all part of a holiday bookstore event, wherein the reviewers have half a minute to give their review or get yanked off the stage like a failed contestant on the Gong Show. Here are my 30 second reviews.\n\nOne of the books I came up with was a little hard cover edition of Agatha Christie's Murder on the Orient Express. The book was good; the review, short and sweet, but it came out to longer than 30 seconds. Timing myself, I ended with 37 seconds and some change. I'm still tempted to use it.\n\n\n\n\nAgatha Christie's Murder on the Orient Express for Parents & Grandparents\n\nThis book was written in 1934, but it remains timeless. It's main character is a private investigator who has two things going for him: One- he's brilliant at solving mysteries, two- his mustache. When there's a murder on this train crossing Europe, Hercule Poirot is the guy on the case.\n\nThe reason this is the perfect book for your parents or grandparents, is that Christie is great with character development and because of it, this book feels timeless. Also, this edition is pocket sized, low priced, and has a classic hard cover design that goes great on any shelf.\n\nThe next book on my list was Cinemaps. It's a book of maps of all your favorite movies. It's not easy giving a review of this book without taking the time to show someone the pages, but I don't tend to do things the easy way.\n\n\n\nCinemaps by Andrew DeGraff for In-Laws & Co-Workers\n\nThis is the book lovers book for people who love movies. How much territory did Billy cover on his big wheel in the Shining's Overlook Hotel?\n\nIt's all in this book and it beautifully illustrated. This is the coffee table book that people will look through, talk about, and use as a movie guide the next time they turn on their favorite flick. Because it's not just maps. It also includes wonderful little secrets about the movies and expands upon what we already know from watching the movie previously. This is a great book for In-Laws and Co-Workers, because it's a magical conversation piece.\n\nMeddling Kids was also a great book. I loved it so much, that I naturally go into a detailed description and a list of all the things that make it great. This 30 second thing is murder and I decided that I'll give the review if they have to drag me off kicking and screaming.\n\n\n\nMeddling Kids by Edgar Cantero for Sibblings, Besties, & Buddies\n\nMeddling Kids is a fantastic Horror/Comedy. It's essentially what would happen if the Scooby Gang grew up and moved on, leading dysfunctional lives after years of busting criminals posing as monsters. The author has fun with all the Saturday Morning Cartoon cliches and shows us that as we've grown out of cartoons, so have those characters.\n\nYou're going to laugh with recognition of the tropes and the characters. You're going to be drawn into the incitement as these old friends get pulled into another mystery, one with real, and you're going to love these people you feel you've known for decades.\n\nThis book includes but isn't about they mystery and monsters. It's about taking that group from the old cartoons and giving them some closure with their final case. It's about finally finding the thing you've been after all your life. Trust me, you're laugh, you'll shiver, you'll pass this book on to your best friend.\n\nMeant more of a joke than anything, I decided to throw some fun into the mix by offering up the Kama Sutra Colouring Book as a suggestion for sweethearts. As this blog is being written before the actual event, I'm still not sure how well it will go over, but I'm hoping for a laugh and hoping that it sells.\n\n\n\nThe Kama Sutra Colouring Book for Sweeties\n\nThere's nothing like staying in with your sweetie. No shame, no judgment, just this book and a box of crayons.\n\nFor the teens, I decided to dip into a pool that's new to me. I've never read Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy, but I thought I'd start by reading the prequel, The Book of Dust. This timed in at under 30 seconds but, honestly, I felt like I was floundering. Did I give enough information to make it sound good? We'll see.\n\n\n\nThe Book of Dust- La Belle Sauvage by Phillip Pullman for Teens\n\nBook one of a new trilogy by Phillip Pullman. Pullman is telling them that their voices matter, that what they say is important.\n\nLast but certainly not least is a book for the little ones. The original book I chose was wonderfully illustrated, it was educational, and it made me laugh. However, that book isn't easy to get ahold of. My runner up was actually just as funny, and might be just as good for an expecting dad as it is for the tots themselves.\n\n\n\nMustache Baby for the Little Ones\n\nMustache Baby is a cool little board book about a baby born with a mustache. The doctor gives his parents the warning to look out for how the mustache grows. If it curls on the ends, he'll be headed for a life of crime, but if it stays full and respectable, the baby will grow to be a law abiding citizen. Of course, the baby adopts both styles. | title | Psychosis: A New Brand of Hero (review) |
| body | Psychosis writer- Adam Atkinson artist- David Coates Psychosis is about a new brand of hero. You take a man who puts the weight of the world on his shoulders and you train him how to use that weight to his advantage. Now, split that man into two separate psyches. One knows how to kill and has the confidence to do it, and the other is less confident and doesn't have the taste for hurting others. This is Psychosis. Written and drawn by a couple of guys from Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada- Psychosis is a bloody thrill ride with action, excitement, lots of heart and a touch of mental illness. And surprisingly, the mental illness is a conscious part of the story. Throughout the comics of DC, Marvel, Image, and Darkhorse there are good and bad guys who aren't quite right. One of my favorites is the Badger: a psycho hero with multiple personalities and the supposed ability to talk to animals. Then there's Deadpool who is nothing more than a lunatic with an extraordinary healing factor and a knack for killing But Psychosis is different. In each case of those characters, their mental illness is part of a schtick. It's a gimmick or a prop. Most characters have them. Batman has the Batmobile, Superman has the “S” on his chest and the heat vision, and Deadpool is screaming crazy. Psychosis however, his illness can be seen as part of the problem or part of the solution, depending how you look at it. For those other characters, their psychosis is what drives the comedy of their books. This is not a comedy. Psychosis takes the killing and the mentally ill very serious. The book comes to us via Outpouring Comics, an independent company out of New Jersey. Atkinson and Coates, Psychosis' creators, have put much of their blood sweat and tears into this project and feel that even though it's kind of a super hero comic, it contains interesting material that's relevant to many Canadians these days. I can top that one: I've read Psychosis and feel like it's relevant to much of the world these days. The Story: Psychosis is written by Adam Atkinson. The book takes place in the nearish future and is about a guy named Victor. Abandoned by his parents as a baby, Victor was raised in a harsh world where most people took care of themselves and ignored the needs of others. But Victor wasn't like that. Throughout the book, we get flashbacks of his life. We see the hardships and the trauma that ultimately make him a victim and partner to the character Psychosis. Psychosis is Vic's other personality. The very skilled, very strong killer who does what he has to in order to protect those who can't help themselves. Psychosis likes what he does. He thrives on it and Victor doesn't approve. What we get within all of this, is a combination of action and adventure with a smattering of psychological drama. Besides the timely eviscerations, we get the practical therapy sessions and concern for Victor's mental well-being. It's both exhilarating and touching. The Art: It's easy to see that David Coates is an equal partner in this venture. The detail in each panel and the dedication to creating this intensely dynamic motion on every page, shows all the hard work he's putting into Psychosis. Coates has an eye for perspective and keeps his style and the detail very consistent through out. Within the four issues I've read, Coates not only shows his true talent from issue one, he shows that he loves doing what he's doing. I find it impressive and refreshing and am giving Psychosis all my thumbs up. So do yourself a favor and check out Psychosis on Facebook. Tell them Eblison sent you. It's a cool little indie book. Graphic and violent, but well put together and well worth the read. |

| title | Untold (review) |
| body | Untold #1 writer- Daniel Ferrand artist- Johannes Vick ---------------------------- There are things our parents told us that aren't exactly true. White lies; sometimes to spare our feelings. Sometimes they're told to keep us safe. But sometimes those little white lies are told because the truths are so horrible, so terrifying, that we would be driven mad upon hearing them. And sometimes they're even worse than that. The Story: -------------- Untold is one of those stories. Creators Daniel Ferrand and Johannes Vick have woven a tale of terror that feels like it could have been handed down through the ages. A young woman, who has missed her beloved grandfather for a decade, finally gets the strength to dig up the truth of his whereabouts. For years she's asked, “Where is grandpa? Why did he have to go away?” And the only answer she would get was, “Your grandfather is a poorly man, but he loves you very much.” If that answer sounds like a veiling of the truth, you're thinking the same thing Alice did. Which is why she went in search of her grandfather. What she found was a loving old man in a creepy old hospital, with a dark secret all of his own; a secret that might drive young Alice insane if it doesn't kill her first. The Project: ---------------- Writer, Daniel Ferrand and artist, Johannes Vick began this Untold journey campaigning online through Kickstarter. Untold is proof that hard work and the right amount of charisma and public support, can really bring life to ideas. Of course, these two gentlemen, who hail from the UK, give much thanks to friends and family as well as their local comic shops for giving them the right motivation to complete this project. Where that sort of help is crucial when creating, these guys are way too modest. Untold is a product of their hard work and their unique vision, and it's success will come from them seeing that vision through. The Art: ----------- The art in Untold #1 is mostly black & white. Whether the guys ever intended to colorize the story fully or not, Johannes Vick's art in stark b&w with shocks of bright blood red from time to time, would bring goosebumps to the back of any reader's neck. Each page causes uneasy tension and often a certain gulping with nervousness with, at least, every other panel. In fact, Vick frames each panel with the eye and the style of an edgy independent horror film director. Some images appear larger than life, in order to make the reader feel smaller and more vulnerable to the terror they're reading, where other scenes have an almost “fish-eyed lens” appearance, giving a surreal feel to the action. So, without a doubt, Johannes Vick's sense of perspective is incredible and obviously intentional. A refreshing change to many of the mainstream comics on the market today. The Writing: ---------------- In the opening notes of Untold #1, Ferrand thanks (amongst others) the people who picked up the book without him having to repeatedly nag them. As he put it, “please read my book, it's good... I promise.” If you like horror comics, you already have a good reason to pick it up. And if you like anything exhilarating and different from the scads of titles already out there, read his book, it's good... I promise. As Vick's art style feels like a nightmarishly surreal horror fest, Ferrand's writing serves as the creeping bones for the monstrous Untold skeleton, giving that art style a figure to dress. With much luck and more hard work, Untold will keep creeping around the dark corners of our minds and into our comic libraries, with issue after issue after issue. Want Your Own? You can always get ahold of the Untold crew on their The Untold Comic Facebook page. Right now, the book is in a smattering of comic shops in the UK, but I'm sure they'd love to hear how you want it in your comic shop as well. So check out Untold #1. It's cool, it's creepy, it's disturbing, and it'll make you lose sleep even if you're into horror. Oh, and while you're poking around their neck of the woods, tell they guys Eblison sent you. We'll be seeing y'all. |

| title | Alfie (comic review) |
| body | Alfie: An Amazing Comic From A Dirty Mind Recently, I bumped into an online comic called Alfie. It's all part of a Patreon campaign by someone called InCase, and it's pretty close to being perfect. Alfie is a fantastic blend of incredibly detailed art and amazingly raunchy pornography. And with the two, we get a classy clever new look at kink culture and fetishes amidst the magical setting of elves, ogres, and halflings. Start by going to the InCase Patreon page. You can't miss it. You'll know you're there when you see the title, “INCASE IS CREATING LEWD”. Usually, this sort of greeting would make me roll my eyes. It's pretty typical for the sort of porn comics found all over the internet. However, this isn't that sort of comic. Scrolling down, you'll find that InCase has a few interesting creations currently in the works. Alfie is the main comic on the site. Monday through Thursday, pages of Alfie are released one at a time. Readers cling to the edge of their seats each day, wondering what fantastic sexual exploits the main characters will be up to next. Emotional connections are forged between readers and the characters due to the long term investment the readership puts into this story. And what a story it is. "Alfie" is a comic that attempts mixing plot and porn. It's a story about a remote halfling village coming in contact with humans for the first time. Plot jumps between Alfie and Vera, halfling mother and daughter, as they get to know a couple of humans and elves who help them... expand their horizons." - from the Alfie Patreon campaign. Alfie is a halfling. In case you didn't know (no pun intended), a halfling is a mythical creature sometimes known as a hobbit. This particular halfling is in her early twenties and wants to live a more independent lifestyle. She doesn't want to settle down and get married. She desires to be adventurous and free, and really wants to find herself. The normal life of a halfling would certainly keep her from those things. An interesting aspect of Alfie, is that the story switches perspective between chapters. We first get to know Alfie herself and learn about her interests in the humans that are visiting the halfling village. In another chapter, we get to know Vera. Vera is Alfie's mom. Being the breadwinner of the house, Vera works hard in the family business and is sadly under appreciated by her possibly unfaithful husband. Then one day, an elf comes to Vera with a very interesting request. He wants her to make him some leather BDSM gear. Of course, this opens up a whole new world to Vera, and a whole new chapter in the ongoing saga of Alfie. Alfie's art is definitely top notch. InCase uses thick clean lines but keeps an unfinished (almost raw) look to his art, something that makes readers appreciate the black and white pieces just as much as the colored work. All of the characters have their own distinct appearances and their own set of distinct facial expressions. But of course it's also important that he's good at drawing the human body. And he is. InCase's women look natural with curvy plush bodies and realistic shapes. Oh, and the sex is hot. The key to that is that the characters look like someone you might know or could have seen in everyday life. Great art and a clever well written script make Alfie one of the best porn comics ever. One reader described it this way: “It's not a porn comic with a story, it's a great comic with sex.” That says it all, and I think it says a lot about the talent of InCase. When you're on InCase's Patreon page, seriously consider contributing to the cause. It's what keeps the magic alive and keeps this amazing creator in business. And when you do, tell InCase Eblison sent you. |

Of course, this opens up a whole new world to Vera, and a whole new chapter in the ongoing saga of Alfie.\n\n\n\nAlfie's art is definitely top notch. The key to that is that the characters look like someone you might know or could have seen in everyday life.\n\n\n\nGreat art and a clever well written script make Alfie one of the best porn comics ever. One reader described it this way: “It's not a porn comic with a story, it's a great comic with sex.” That says it all, and I think it says a lot about the talent of InCase.\n\nWhen you're on InCase's Patreon page, seriously consider contributing to the cause. It's what keeps the magic alive and keeps this amazing creator in business. And when you do, tell InCase Eblison sent you.",
