| title | Project Zomboid: The Dawn of the Dead (1978) of Video Games |
| body | For a while there, [Project Zomboid](https://www.projectzomboid.com/) was my favorite steam game. I played it obsessively with repeated plays spanning several years. I eventually learned to survive in post-apocalyptic Muldraugh, Kentucky sometime in the 1990's. I barricaded empty houses and warehouses. I learned to loot and scavenged for food, weapons, and supplies. I learned how to avoid the hordes I barricaded warehouses and grew vegetables on the roofs, drinking rainwater to survive. I built catwalks across zombie infested streets for safe passage on scavenger runs. I learn first hand that shooting a gun in the zombie apocalypse is just ringing the dinner bell. When night falls, get somewhere safe and don't make a sound. Cover the windows, lock the doors, and hope the zombies don't sense you. Eat your beans, read your Beginner's Guide to Fishing, and hope this won't be your last night alive. Despite Project Zomboid's simplistic graphics, the game is amazingly immersive. The world feels lived in and the evidence of the apocalypse is everywhere. Houses often tell the stories of their dead. I can't count the number of times' I've jumped and hollered out after being startled by a zombie in a quite house. Few games have managed to scare me so, and it's all the more impressive considering Project Zomboid is an isometric game with intentionally dated graphics. In the early days of the apocalypse, when the electricity is still on, the televisions and radio are still working. From the broadcasts, the back-story is told in a completely natural, unobtrusive way. In general, it's typical zombie apocalypse fare but the way it's presented brings to mind the news segments in Romero's Night of the Living Dead and the opening of Dawn of the Dead (1978). That's the thing about this game, it really feels like a video game version of Dawn of the Dead. It even has *the* mall! The zombies are pure Romero as well (though this can be changed in the settings). You can deal with one zombie, no problem; two or three, and so long as you're careful you can take them out. But as you get better and better at killing them, you'll eventually become over-confident and this will get you killed. One bite is all it takes. But in Project Zomboid, like in Romero's world, there are millions of the damn things. They travel in herds, attracted to each other by sound. In Project Zomboid, you may go to sleep in your safe house, confident there are no zombies any where near your peripheries; only to wake up to find a herd of hundreds has moved in and they're banging on your doors and boarded windows and moaning. Always the moaning. In such a situation, you have two choices: abandon your safe-house, and fall back, or try to herd the zombies away by making a lot of noise in the opposite direction, perhaps with that shotgun you found. Learning to herd zombies is a necessary survival skill in Project Zomboid. But make no mistake, being zombie bait is a dangerous proposition. Things can and do go badly quickly. As the game time progresses, herding zombies becomes more and more central to gameplay, as the zombie population keeps increasing. Story-wise, this is done to simulate hordes of zombies leaving the citiesAltogetherher, it makes for a very convincing Zombie Apocalypse simulator. Project Zomboid is *hard as hell*. It's a Rogue-like, and not only do you only have a single life, there is a significant chance that a single bite from a zombie turns you. And of course, being true to the Romero canon, there is no cure. To add to the tension this creates is the fact that this game has extensive RPG elements. You can really build up a character and customize them. But it takes a lot of time to level, which makes the pain of dying all the more heartbreaking. Moreover, Project Zomboid is a crafting game, so death can mean losing all the safe-houses and survival gear you've built. Fortunately, there are now options to turn off most of these rogue-like features; but they are still the default settings. #### The Bad Project Zomboid is often held up as an example of a game stuck in development limbo on Steam's Early Access. It has been in early access since 2013, and in development since 2011, and there is still no end in sight. Development is frustratingly slow; which is something Indie Stone have become known for. And I can attest to this, as it feels like they've been working on implementing vehicles for well over a year. NPC's, one of the main promised features before launch won't likely be finished for years at this rate. This slow development has seriously damaged this game's reputation and the reputation of Indie Stone. Steam reviews like the following are common: > I bought this a week before I married my wife. Now I have two kids and I celebrated my five-year anniversary three months ago. Still no NPCs. - [source](https://steamcommunity.com/id/the_council/recommended/108600/) Or > I bought this game when I was 16 years old. I'm now 23 and there are still no ♥♥♥♥ing NPCs. - [Source](https://steamcommunity.com/id/Akatsuki_Dawn/recommended/108600/) In Indie Stone's defense, they are a small team and this is their first game. They are learning to be game developers as they go. They publish [weekly updates](http://projectzomboid.com/blog/), explaining exactly what their doing and why things have taken so long. It's all above board. Furthermore, Project Zomboid integrates mods via the Steam Workshop; so there are plenty of additional features available via the modding community. What impresses me is that the Indie Stone founders, as gamers, wanted a Romero-style zombie survival game which didn't exist so they decided to create one. And to their credit, they've already succeeded. Project Zomboid, as is - is already a good game that one can sink hundreds of hours into. I've played well over 200 hours, and some of the Steam reviewers have hundreds more than me. Promised features like vehicles and NPCs will flesh out the game more, but the heart of the game is already solid and imminently playable in it's current state - and honestly, it has been for years. As far as other negatives go, there are the occasional bugs. Though, not game breaking. For example, some of the sound effects can be obnoxiously loud. Also, while serviceable, the UI for the game is ugly and clunky and really needs a major overhaul. Finally, a late-game problem is that once you figure out how to survive and build up a stronghold full of supplies, there isn't much left to do. The rational thing for your character to do at that point is to hole up in the safety of your base, but that about as fun as watching paint dry. So as a player, you will take stupid, unnecessary risks just to stave off your own boredom. Spoiler Alert: This is how your best character dies. Anyway, Project Zomboid is one of my favorite games of all time. It is a zombie apocalypse simulator that simulates the same part of my brain Dawn of the Dead (1978) does. > When there's no more room in hell, the dead will walk the Earth. There are a million zombie survival crafting horror games, and most of them have better graphics and larger development teams than Project Zomboid, but somehow Project Zomboid nails the formula better than any I've played. Project Zomboid, is really a surprisingly immersive and intense game, despite first appearances. It's can be a difficult game that demands your full attention, but it can also be relaxing as you build up your base and level up your character. **Excellent Game**. *Highly Recommended*. --- ### Sources 1) [Project Zomboid Homepage](https://www.projectzomboid.com/) 2) [Project Zomboid SubReddit](https://www.reddit.com/r/projectzomboid/) 3) [Indie Stone Forums](https://theindiestone.com/forums/) 4) [Project Zomboid Map Project](https://map.projectzomboid.com/) 5) [Project Zomboid Steam Store Page](http://store.steampowered.com/app/108600/Project_Zomboid/) 6) [Project Zomboid Update Blog](http://projectzomboid.com/blog/) 7) [Project Zomboid Wiki](http://pzwiki.net/wiki/Main_Page) |

This slow development has seriously damaged this game's reputation and the reputation of Indie Stone. Steam reviews like the following are common:\n\n\n> I bought this a week before I married my wife. Now I have two kids and I celebrated my five-year anniversary three months ago. Still no NPCs. - [source](https://steamcommunity.com/id/the_council/recommended/108600/)\n\n\nOr\n \n> I bought this game when I was 16 years old. I'm now 23 and there are still no ♥♥♥♥ing NPCs. - [Source](https://steamcommunity.com/id/Akatsuki_Dawn/recommended/108600/)\n\n\nIn Indie Stone's defense, they are a small team and this is their first game. They are learning to be game developers as they go. They publish [weekly updates](http://projectzomboid.com/blog/), explaining exactly what their doing and why things have taken so long. It's all above board. Furthermore, Project Zomboid integrates mods via the Steam Workshop; so there are plenty of additional features available via the modding community.\n\n\nWhat impresses me is that the Indie Stone founders, as gamers, wanted a Romero-style zombie survival game which didn't exist so they decided to create one. \n\n\nAs far as other negatives go, there are the occasional bugs. Though, not game breaking. For example, some of the sound effects can be obnoxiously loud. Also, while serviceable, the UI for the game is ugly and clunky and really needs a major overhaul. \n\n\nFinally, a late-game problem is that once you figure out how to survive and build up a stronghold full of supplies, there isn't much left to do. The rational thing for your character to do at that point is to hole up in the safety of your base, but that about as fun as watching paint dry. So as a player, you will take stupid, unnecessary risks just to stave off your own boredom. Spoiler Alert: This is how your best character dies. \n\n\n\n\n\nAnyway, Project Zomboid is one of my favorite games of all time. It is a zombie apocalypse simulator that simulates the same part of my brain Dawn of the Dead (1978) does. \n\n\n> When there's no more room in hell, the dead will walk the Earth.\n\n\nThere are a million zombie survival crafting horror games, and most of them have better graphics and larger development teams than Project Zomboid, but somehow Project Zomboid nails the formula better than any I've played. Project Zomboid, is really a surprisingly immersive and intense game, despite first appearances. It's can be a difficult game that demands your full attention, but it can also be relaxing as you build up your base and level up your character. \n\n\n**Excellent Game**. *Highly Recommended*. \n\n\n---\n### Sources\n\n\n1) [Project Zomboid Homepage](https://www.projectzomboid.com/)\n2) [Project Zomboid SubReddit](https://www.reddit.com/r/projectzomboid/)\n3) [Indie Stone Forums](https://theindiestone.com/forums/)\n4) [Project Zomboid Map Project](https://map.projectzomboid.com/)\n5) [Project Zomboid Steam Store Page](http://store.steampowered.com/app/108600/Project_Zomboid/)\n6) [Project Zomboid Update Blog](http://projectzomboid.com/blog/)\n7) [Project Zomboid Wiki](http://pzwiki.net/wiki/Main_Page)",

| title | Hollywood Misanthropes: Why the Post-Apocalyptic Genre Sucks |
| body | I just watched Netflix’s Post-Apocalyptic movie *How it Ends* (2018) and it was terrible. I love the post-apocalyptic genre in theory, but in practice, I’m usually left extremely disappointed with the story and the unrealistic world-building. To me, there is an unquestioned premise that runs through the genre that just breaks its credulity. Namely, that humanity is evil to its core and will tear itself apart the second the shit hits the fan. Why is it almost every film or series in the post-apocalyptic genre thinks mankind will devolve overnight into murderous psychopaths the second calamity strikes, the lights go out, or the government shuts down? The evidence to the contrary is quite clear. Whenever there is a disaster, the vast majority of people help one another in extraordinary ways. When Hurricane Katrina hit, people drove thousands of miles with boats to rescue people. They brought in food and supplies and donated millions of dollars. When government negligence destroyed Flint’s water supply, people sent in fresh water by the truckload. When the 2008 Tsunami hit and all of society temporary collapsed; people didn’t form gangs and start robbing and murdering each other in the streets for loot. Plus, there are hundreds of real stories of human survival and deprivation; where groups of people facing starvation and death didn’t devolve into murderous psychopaths but, rather, banded together to survive. The truth is, most people would rather die than betray their values in a survival situation. Yet, in the post-apocalyptic genre, only the story’s protagonists have these human traits. It’s all those *other people* that turned into psychotic desperados. For example, in *How It Ends* (2018), within three days of the power going down, regular people are having Mad Max style car battles on the highway and trying to murder each other for no particularly good reason. On a cross-country road trip, in a nation of 350 million Americans, the protagonists pretty much only encounter murderous psychopaths - all of whom just happen to be white men. Listen Hollywood, with the exception of actual murderous psychopaths, people have a strong aversion to killing others. I know it’s confusing when so many news stories are about murderers and when there are whole channels devoted to psychopaths. But *the map is not the territory*. A person’s fundamental values don’t change when the lights go out or the shit hits the fan. Sure, it can happen to some people - over time. But certainly not most people - all at once. In disaster-prepper lingo, this murderous mob is called the “golden horde.” The idea is, as the cities empty of food and resources, millions of people will move across the countryside, looting, pillaging and murdering to feed their families. Some preppers prepare for this day with stores of guns, ammunition, bobby traps, etc… It’s an unquestioned truth to them. But I question it. While some people (e.g. criminals, sociopaths, and psychopaths) would attempt this; they are far from a majority. Even with the collapse of law and order, the most sure-fire way to get yourself killed in the apocalypse is to try to steal and harm others. As every story in the genre depicts, people can and will defend themselves. And like a cornered animal, they will be ferocious. Good people will band together for protection - as they always have throughout history. Ironically, even all these misanthropic Hollywood films show the reality of this, as being a villain in the apocalypse means almost certain death at the hands of the good guys. Evil has to hide to survive, even in the apocalypse, as it is always outnumbered by decent people. Look, I do understand where this fear comes from. It is easy to come to some grim conclusions about mankind with even a cursory look at the Holocaust and other genocides. However, such events in history are almost always a product of authoritarian control. Historically, good people commit evil acts when they are ordered to by a legitimate authority. If disobedience will result in punishment, death, or social ostracism; people tend to obey. And when good people are commanded to act against their values, they will deflect that responsibility or sin to the authority in order to live with themselves. As the Nazi’s at Nuremberg did. The problem is, government rarely survives long in post-apocalyptic fiction. And without this factor, the idea that a majority of people would suddenly become roving psychopaths - all on their own - is just not credible. People want to survive above all and attacking strangers (likely armed) isn't conducive to that goal. Humans evolved to survive and thrive in groups. So, in survival situations, people band together. They don’t tear themselves apart as we see so often in this genre. There is just no reason to think that in a post-apocalyptic scenario this would not hold true. This is why most of the post-apocalyptic genre sucks. It’s doesn’t ring true because it fundamentally misunderstands human nature in survival situations. Instead of being about survival, it's just the same old generic good guys vs. bad guys story we find in most genres. Yet, in this genre above all others, mankind is consistently depicted as murderous lunatics that are not only evil - but suicidally so. If realism is the goal, post-apocalyptic fiction should be far less *Mad Max* (1979) and *The Walking Dead* (2010) and much more *Alive* (1993) or *Survivorman* (2004). At its heart, the genre should have far more in common with the [survival genre](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Survival_film) than with the horror and action genres. People shouldn’t be the greatest threat in every damn post-apocalyptic story. It’s immediately less interesting, as we've seen in *The Walking Dead* series as the show's focus went from zombies to Negan and his henchmen. The actual cause of the apocalypse and its direct repercussions should be the focus - not evil rednecks. I guess Hollywood fears working-class white men with guns more than Nuclear fallout, zombies, etc... as they are nearly always the primary villains in this genre. At least the horror genre has some variation in its killers. I mean the apocalypse was so bad, it ended the world. Can we focus on that for five minutes at least? This is by far the most interesting thing about the genre, and it is often completely ignored. For example, *How It Ends* never even reveals *how it ends*. There is a reason the [first ten minutes](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dTYNwwPQH4k) of the *Dawn of the Dead* (2004) remake is so amazing. It focuses solely on the actual apocalypse unfolding instead of petty human scabbles and hamfisted pontifications about the evil nature of man. This is what the genre needs a lot more of. I’m not saying you can’t have evil characters or murderous thugs to spice up the action, but when that’s all there is, and when mankind as a whole is depicted this way - it spreads misanthropy, fear, and paranoia into the minds of millions of viewers. Most people just unquestioningly accept this depiction of human behavior in survival situations and it’s wrong. Call me crazy, but I could see how this is potentially dangerous misinformation. |

| title | Hollywood Misanthrope: Why the Post-Apocalyptic Genre Sucks |
| body | I just watched Netflix’s Post-Apocalyptic movie *How it Ends* (2018) and it was terrible. |

There is a whole other level apparently where Alex Jones is COINTELPRO and in cahoots with the Illuminati and their plan for world domination. He has employees on his staff including Mallory Maroney who worked for STRATFOR. Furthermore his talking points mirror what the Stratfor website puts out. Infowars site's terms and conditions policies clearly state they are collecting your private data and can pass it to third parties. Alex Jones in my opinion has been set up to ensure anyone who comes across this conspiracy stuff has a controlled narrative clown to follow, and their data then gets collected by "Infowars" which is basically a record keeper for the CIA's private version STRATFOR to gather intelligence on the growing disillusioned masses. Whilst also ensuring the narrative for the mainstream "alternate media" is based on partial truths and lies. It also makes it easy to write off the entire conspiracy crowd when the "leader" of it Alex Jones is a nutcase who can't keep his cool in an argument, and comes off sounding like a crazy lunatic just as they want the narrative to go. 3) I never mentioned racism anywhere in my article. So why are you bringing that into the discussion? I think you have been watching a little too much "Infowhores" and Paul Joseph race baiting Watson. 4) You can't just "go around" the federal reserve notes issue. The entire economy including bitcoins and steem are connected to it, it needs to be replaced entirely. They also have a tendency when pressured with it going out of business to start world wars to keep their scheme going: http://i.imgsafe.org/ddf1f1fb9f.jpg 5) As I covered in my Brexit video, and is posted on this blog. Brexit was planned for, and the Bilderberg Group wanted it to happen so they can start to finalize their plans for an EU Army and Intelligence Headquarters. So the only person underestimating anyone is you; you are underestimating the elite and their reach on many levels. |

It also makes it easy to write off the entire conspiracy crowd when the \"leader\" of it Alex Jones is a nutcase who can't keep his cool in an argument, and comes off sounding like a crazy lunatic just as they want the narrative to go. \n\n3) I never mentioned racism anywhere in my article. So why are you bringing that into the discussion? I think you have been watching a little too much \"Infowhores\" and Paul Joseph race baiting Watson. \n\n4) You can't just \"go around\" the federal reserve notes issue. The entire economy including bitcoins and steem are connected to it, it needs to be replaced entirely. They also have a tendency when pressured with it going out of business to start world wars to keep their scheme going: \nhttp://i.imgsafe.org/ddf1f1fb9f.jpg\n\n5) As I covered in my Brexit video, and is posted on this blog. Brexit was planned for, and the Bilderberg Group wanted it to happen so they can start to finalize their plans for an EU Army and Intelligence Headquarters. So the only person underestimating anyone is you; you are underestimating the elite and their reach on many levels.",

| body | This is how I became a libertarian (aka anarcho-capitalist) basically. Long nights not being able to sleep because my head is running thru "How to run all of society" instead of resting for work the next morning. I realize now the vanity of even trying to sort out *how* society should be governed, but I was a Chavez loving leftist at the time. Anyway, from a former leftist perspective, these questions aren't really that effective. Why? Because the left believes in self-sacrifice for the benefit of the collective. So in every example where you ask if you want such and such at a cost to your own liberty, the answer would *yes*. They don't have this double standard and are willing to risk a self-imposed tyranny if it serves the greater good. So, for me, breaking through the notion of a *greater good* was what brought me around to anarchy (capitalism goes without saying in a free society). Anyway, here are some self-debating questions from a leftist angle: 1. Do the means justify the end? Does the end justify the means? This is really the heart of the matter. If the *end* is the pentacle of human flourishing (as every ideology maintains), than the *means* are our only path to such a society. Brick by brick we have to work towards a better world. 2. If the *means* are immoral how can the *ends* ever become moral? If our goal is a better world, how can immorality and injustice be the path forward? This is where the idea of taxation starts breaking down as a tool for good. If we build our society on a rotten foundation, no amount of redecorating is going help much. 3. Read up on the history of socialism. It you want the lesson of "the road to hell is paved with good intentions" hammered into your skull with resounding monotony , this is the way to do it. I got into socialist history as a fan of socialism but I came away completely disgusted. As I said, I was a Hugo Chavez supporting socialist at one point. If I had live in Venezuela at the time, I'd have been 100% in support of the socialist revolution there. Fast forward a decade plus and people there are eating there family pets and zoo animals because they can't keep groceries on the shelves. It pains to me to know I supported these policies all because I wanted less people to suffer. But all the good intentions in the world are worthless when implemented via a system of coercion. They get corrupted from the outset. |

| body | I can't argue with your conclusions as I fully agree with them. The idea that elections are bullshit and we must try non-political alternatives is the path forward. Trying to vote away government is a self-defeating proposition. How do we get rid of the Federal Reserve? We go around it via Bitcoin and other Currencies. It'll take some time, but the seeds are planted. Having said that, I don't think there is a conspiracy of fake candidates all secretly working for the Federal Reserve. I have to say its bad form to attribute malice to someone's ignorance. The Fed keeps its dastardly dealings far from public consciousness and it simply isn't on 99.9% of peoples radar. The unwarranted ego of presidential candidates almost assures they are especially ignorant. Few people know or understand the problem. I don't buy the Trump for Hillary conspiracy either. They ran in the same social circles and have had business dealings, but that doesn't indicate they are in collusion together. As much as I think nationalism and a wall are bad ideas, I can understand why half the country disagrees with me. Admittedly, it took some effort on my part. Surprisingly, these people are not political cartoon caricatures who just hate brown people. Anyone who writes them off as ignorant racists in a cult of personality is going to be in for a surprise in November when Trump wins in a landslide. Alex Jones may be paranoid and a fear monger, but he isn't fake and he has his thumb on the pulse of American culture. Trump is part of the same populace uprising in the West that resulted in Brexit. Don't underestimate them. |

| body | I think the idea of voluntary states/taxation will be necessary to bridge the gap between a world of nation states and free anarchy. From the early days of rape and pillage to the charming dispositions of swindlers, taxation has evolved to the point most people doubt it is compulsory. Now, I don't particularly like the idea of a tax on all land being called voluntary. Unless you're a fish or a seasteading billionaire, it'd be identical to the present day minus all the other compulsory taxes. Besides, The underlying premise, that the state rightfully owns the earth, would just be a reset button on state power. This belief in states is entirely cultural. It is William Blake's "mind-forged manacles" and if people don't stop believing this bullshit no amount of political reform is going to be enough. The problem with a free market society coexisting with a government is the government will grow incredibly powerful by feeding off its productive people. The U.S. is perhaps the most historically relevant example of this. Additionally, land and future taxation can be used as collateral for credit. It's a recipe for unconstrained growth. I think another means of facilitating this transition is too simply relax government control and allow businesses to step into traditional government roles. E.g FedEx or UPS. If the service is necessary and needed, people will pay for it willingly. As I see it, nothing major needs to be undone or tore down. Time and consumer choice would make the government service obsolete. Let them fade away. Another factor we mustn't overlook when we ponder a free society is the very interface we are conversing through. The internet completely changes what future self-government will look like. We can see glimmers of it nowadays, but who knows what a couple of centuries of this will do to our political systems. |

| body | I think we are using different definitions of "government." We mean very specifically a *monopoly on force* that sustains itself via *involuntary taxation*. Legitimized initiatory violence and taxation are what we are purposing be eliminated, not people working together collectively in society. This is the the wool over your eyes. >If we abolished the 'government' we could never have a single society the size of the United States You go on making huge assumptions that completely miss the moral argument we actually give a damn about. Who cares about the *size* of society? And why would freedom result in a smaller society anyway? In fact the opposite is clearly the case as the internet and trade are making us global denizens as we speak. >The difference is that a government can be held accountable by engaged and informed citizens. [How engaged and informed does the average Chinese citizen have to be to stop government abuses of power?](http://media.npr.org/assets/img/2012/11/09/01_posters_slide-f0f2ec5dd1b8ebd6728c4b47bce3054b673211b0-s900-c85.jpg) How informed and engaged did the people of Flint need to be to not be poisoned? Who will be held accountable for 18+ Trillion in U.S. debt and counting? Or all the blundering wars? No one. Ever. Contrariwise, how many businesses or citizens get away with such blatant abuses of power outside of government? Nevermind that an informed and engaged citizenry is a pipe dream that imposes on everyone. I don't know about you but I've got enough on my plate as it is. I shouldn't be forced to waste my time and mental energies trying to influence rulers I never asked for. And I'm about 99% more engaged than anyone I know. Political apathy is completely logical from a results/time perspective as an individual. Ignoring this reality doesn't help or make the problem go away. >And from my perspective a lack of perfection isn't a reason to scrap an entire system. For me to believe that getting rid of a government is a good idea, you would need to convince me that the replacement system would provide better versions of all the things the state already provides. Ha. See, you are totally on board. Its just a matter of pragmatics. And I think this is most everyone honestly. Look, I'm not *selling* you anything. [I'm *telling* you that if you want to impose on me with your idea of "society" you better be able to justify it](http://www.libertarianprepper.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/STATISM-Ideas-so-good.jpg). Just because I'm an anarchist (capitalism is a given in a free society) doesn't mean I want to flip a switch and pull the rug out from under society. I simply see these ideas as part of a long tradition of political philosophy that has been ongoing since at least the Greeks. There is no switch to flip. If we want less violent and corrupt systems governing society we have a long, hard slog to get there. Step number one for humanity is acknowledging there even is a problem with the idea of violently imposed states. |

"body": "I think we are using different definitions of \"government.\" We mean very specifically a *monopoly on force* that sustains itself via *involuntary taxation*. Legitimized initiatory violence and taxation are what we are purposing be eliminated, not people working together collectively in society. This is the the wool over your eyes. \n\n>If we abolished the 'government' we could never have a single society the size of the United States\n\nYou go on making huge assumptions that completely miss the moral argument we actually give a damn about. Who cares about the *size* of society? And why would freedom result in a smaller society anyway? In fact the opposite is clearly the case as the internet and trade are making us global denizens as we speak.\n\n>The difference is that a government can be held accountable by engaged and informed citizens. \n\n[How engaged and informed does the average Chinese citizen have to be to stop government abuses of power?](http://media.npr.org/assets/img/2012/11/09/01_posters_slide-f0f2ec5dd1b8ebd6728c4b47bce3054b673211b0-s900-c85.jpg) How informed and engaged did the people of Flint need to be to not be poisoned? Who will be held accountable for 18+ Trillion in U.S. debt and counting? Or all the blundering wars? No one. Ever. Contrariwise, how many businesses or citizens get away with such blatant abuses of power outside of government? \n\nNevermind that an informed and engaged citizenry is a pipe dream that imposes on everyone. \n\n>And from my perspective a lack of perfection isn't a reason to scrap an entire system.\nFor me to believe that getting rid of a government is a good idea, you would need to convince me that the replacement system would provide better versions of all the things the state already provides.\n\nHa. See, you are totally on board. Its just a matter of pragmatics. And I think this is most everyone honestly. Look, I'm not *selling* you anything. [I'm *telling* you that if you want to impose on me with your idea of \"society\" you better be able to justify it](http://www.libertarianprepper.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/STATISM-Ideas-so-good.jpg). Just because I'm an anarchist (capitalism is a given in a free society) doesn't mean I want to flip a switch and pull the rug out from under society. | body | And my rejoinder is that we did figure it out, our solution, broadly speaking is government. You anarchists can't except this because you don't like the solution and the solution having the broad backing of society undermines your volunterism. But among people who have thought about the issue government is still an attractive option to many. If we abolished the 'government' we could never have a single society the size of the United States. We'd revert to village sized societies or city states. Eventually governments would be formed in those smaller teritories, and at that point we would be faced with the problem of keeping the peace between all those little states. Government has arisen in every single society I've ever read about, back to ancient Egypt and the fertile cressant. As you have already admitted, governments have the popular support of the governed. Anarchists say, ok, tomorrow, we'll get rid of the entire government and at that point we'll just come up with a better system! We'll invent a better way of policing, a better way of maintaining clean water, a better way of keeping the poor fed, a better way of providing healthcare, a better way of building highways, a better way of protecting the environment. Yes, government makes mistakes. The led in the water of Flint is just one of them. The difference is that a government can be held accountable by engaged and informed citizens. If citizens choose to be unengaged and ill informed, this is there fault. Your decentralized anarchist collectives couldn't be held responsible for anything that went wrong. Who would fight those massive Californian fires? Who would come up with the money to pay those people? Saying the answers to those questions aren't important enough to speculate on before you throw out our current system is the weakest part of your argument. Right now we have a system that works imperfectly, but I've never seen a perfect system in my entire life. And from my perspective a lack of perfection isn't a reason to scrap an entire system. For me to believe that getting rid of a government is a good idea, you would need to convince me that the replacement system would provide better versions of all the things the state already provides. In a previous post I asked about policing, and someone said "Oh, well, we could just have private detectives, couldn't we?" And its like, sure we could but who woud solve murders of the poor? Who would pay those private detectives to solve the cases no rich people cared about? P.S. Remember to upvote high quality replies. I don't necisarily mean mine, but upvoting replies encourages discussion. |

As a libertarian in America, I am cursed to listen to both sides of the “debate” in this country. From the CIA News Network to Faux News; from Alex Jones to the Young Turds. One thing has become clear: fear of the OTHER CANDIDATE is the only thing anyone cares about anymore. It’s a fucking feeding frenzy where everyone is getting off on each other’s fear. If the building was on fire you’d all be trampled. <img class="wp-image-71 alignleft" src="https://johnsondefender.files.wordpress.com/2016/08/08ba6003bb1ada3e7c0b3d0973f574b0.jpg" alt="08ba6003bb1ada3e7c0b3d0973f574b0" width="338" height="348" align="left"/> Regardless of how much you fear Hillary or Trump, you have to understand the other side feels exactly the same way about your candidate. This would all be comical if you people weren’t dead fucking serious. And it would be understandable if it wasn’t every single election, ever. Having said this, this fevered pitch of political angst that comes every four years is the price of transferring power. One of the brilliant things about the American system and democracy, in general, is that these elections serve as a steam valve for political upheaval, uprisings, and revolutions. Ideally, people would come together and work towards the common interest rather than a balls-to-the-wall reality TV megafight every 4 years, but we can all agree it’s a damn sight better than actual revolutions. <img class=" size-full wp-image-33 alignleft" src="https://johnsondefender.files.wordpress.com/2016/08/demvrep.jpg" alt="demvrep" width="500" height="353" align="center" /> <caption align="center"> Which team will win the sceptre of power? Tune in November 6th to find out!</caption> At worse, we’ll have four years of a candidate you don’t like. Welcome to my world. As a libertarian, I’m getting flak from both sides now telling me that I’m really just voting for the ENEMY by supporting the Libertarian candidate. Maybe if you guys didn’t say this every-single-election it wouldn’t seem so retarded to me. I would just echo Penn Jillette’s sentiment and say “<a href="https://ileadliberty.wordpress.com/2016/07/05/penn-jillette-fuck-you-in-the-neckif-you-say-my-third-party-vote-is-wasted/">Fuck You In The Neck</a>,” but I understand you are afraid of Trump/Hillary and think the fate of the Country and maybe even humanity is on the line. The only way I know for you to rid yourself of this fear is to listen to your political opponents shitting themselves about your side. Fear spreads like wildfire through herd animals and we are all extremely susceptible to this. Look, we have checks and balances and another election in four years. It’s not that big of a deal whoever wins. So chill out and let me vote my conscience.
