| body | # A fools promise
**“An ounce of performance is worth a pound of promises” - Mae West** It is not uncommon to hear utterings in the form of promises from kin, friends or partners. They are not usually loud or bold statements, rather they are subtle, as if they do not want to be held accountable to more than one person; and for good reason. Often there are more complex issues in the background: relationship problems, fear or wanting to protect someone from sufferance. There is no issue with issuing promises based on these grounds. The issue arises only when we fall subject to our own fallacy – believing, as the promiser and ‘promisee’, that all these promises will be met with physical action. ‘I promise I will be fine’ was one of the first assurances I can recall. It was also the first time in living memory that I had been truly let down; as I watched my Grandma convulse from a stroke following a routine CAT-scan. Many emotions swirled around my body following her death, yet resentment was the one that surprised me. In my ten year-old mind I had been lied to in the most-cruel of ways – after all she had promised to remain healthy yet she never made any attempt to do so. She had refused to take her medication or adhere to medical advice. Nonetheless, the crucial element I missed in all the chaos of emotions is why she felt she needed to promise such an unachievable reality; my only guess is that it came with the realisation that she would not survive. Perpetuating our hope was her way of easing her own fear, as without hope there is little to enjoy in the world. So, from a superficial outlook at least she had proclaimed an empty-promise, yet it is not always so black and white. Her action was in protecting the innocence and beliefs of those people depending on her, as such performance is a merely a matter of perspective. Unfortunately, in the world we live in this grey-area of perspective is easily lost. We forget our partners fears in the midst conflict or our colleagues when make a mistake at work. Emotion is a powerful catalyst when making assurances and when we forget that it can manifest as distrust in each other, in institutions or authorities. A performance entails countless mechanisms working in the background to ensure its success, yet we judge it only on the final product: a tangible response. As a result, we cannot see minute progress, or understand the flawed premise of emotion-driven promises. Despite the best efforts of firearm referendum’s and promised gun-control measures through the Obama administration, there was no effective control measures introduced in the United States. Looking at this it could easily be deemed a failure or ‘broken-promise’ as there was no physical outcome in the magnitude of the hopes of his supporters. Yet in doing so, we fall subject to our own fallacy once again, as we measure fulfilment through whole numbers, rather than fractions. Promises in our contemporary world are made to be broken. Not because of the way we undertake satisfying them, yet because of the way we view when they are successful or not. If we as a society are going to continue to see performance as fully complete and physical, then we will continue to have more assurances than action. Conversely, if we suppress our expectation behind things we are promised, we will see more action as the veil on perspective will be lifted. Only then performance may have a chance at balancing the scales more equally. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ Please **upvote** and **resteem** if you found this piece insightful 😊 → Follow @cryptocj |

| body | # Writing for The Point of Writing
Hey Steemians :) I am back from an extended hiatus due to an increasingly difficult study work-load which inhibited my ability to post regularly. That being said, i am back now. Something i enjoy almost as much as writing on topical medical issues is the art of writing itself. It is peaceful, comforting and relaxing to express a voice on different themes - often personal in nature. For this reason (and more), i have decided to begin a new segment appropriately titled 'writing for the point of writing'. Here i will share with you some discursive styled-essays on various themes; some will be very generalised and others will tackle socio-cultural issues. I hope to hear some feedback from you all! | body | Being a closet weeb I'd say Japan. I have one friend who loved it there and another who was off-put by the cultural differences though. But on the other hand Croatia is just so damn beautiful from the photos I've seen. It's definitely near the top of places I want to visit some day. Sorry I don't have any personal experiences to offer. |

| body | I have been to #1 Panama, #2 Peru, #3 Nicaragua, #4 Spain and #7 Ecuador. I would highly recommend Peru and Spain. Peru: I spent about 3 weeks there in total and been to a few places like Mancora beach, Lima and Cuzco. The food there is amazing(you gotta try ceviche) and the culture there is very different to any other parts of the world. The most exciting part is Machu Picchu, one of the seven wonders! Spain: Spain is a very big country and every different region has its own specialty. Madrid and Barcelona would be the must visit! If you have a longer time, check out Segovia, Toledo, Valencia, and Sevilla. All cities have a historical town where by there's so many impressive medieval architectures. The food in Spain has more variety like from paella to all kinds of tapas. Comparing Peru and Spain, Peru would be the cheaper to travel around but safety would be a concern. Nevertheless, it would be a very adventurous journey. Spain is a modern first world country, it's considered one of the cheapest destination in Europe but the cost would be higher than Peru. I hope you find your destination soon! Update us about your decision and trip! Thank you. |

| body | Hey Steemians :) I know the last few posts have involved different subjects to my usual science and medical based posts, except I am thinking of starting a new anatomy series soon where I would explore different organs and parts of the body - please let me know what you think of this idea below. Nevertheless, today’s post will be about travel; more specifically a trip I am planning that I need **YOUR HELP** when deciding on a specific destination. So without further delay, I will outline a couple of the countries I have in mind. Please comment the location you most highly recommend and possibly provide some insight as to why. 😊 # #1: Panama
 # #2: Peru
http://peru-explorer.com/wp-content/uploads/machu-picchu-5.jpg # #3: Nicaragua
 # #4: Spain
 # #5: Croatia
 # #6: Morocco
 # #7: Ecuador # #8: Galapagos # #9: Japan https://steemitimages.com/DQmcGTNg7vmKQWNMR1idU9wdF4vTbiRtLsyiBs1GdDXADTs/image.png # #10: Philippines # #11: Utah # #12: Tanzania # #13: Madagascar |

| body | Australian sport is largely driven by the spirit of the ‘underdog’; where the general sports fan would rather the see the team OR individual who is expected to lose, win, rather than the converse. Jeff Horn’s victory over Manny Pacquiao is no exception to this rule and as an Australian, I was enthralled to see a humble school teacher step up and leave their heart in the ring against the worlds best. Nonetheless, since the announcement of the unanimous decision at the Battle in Brisbane, scrutiny from high-profile athletes and commentators around the world have smothered the Rocky Bellbowa like story, leaving a cloud of uncertainty surrounding how the fight reached the result that it did. Before I delve into some analysis and subjective opinion, I thought it would be best to openly admit that I personally am not a boxing expert. Despite that obvious fact, as a viewer of the spectacle and someone with some knowledge of fighting, I wanted to offer a well-rounded perspective for those who believe that Jeff Horn should not have won. # How did the judges score the fight the way they did?
Simply, that is an unknown. Even renowned boxer Danny Green struggles to explain and understand the scoring system, merely emphasising it's complexity. In essence, it is a system which is deeply subjective, as the way one person views a fight can be completely contradictory to the way another individual views a fight. Nevertheless, there are a number of practical rules which are involved in determining a victor, of which I have selected three main criteria to explore to hopefully provide insight into how the decision eventuated. 1. **_Ring Generalship_** 2. **_Effective Aggression_** 3. **_Defence_** # RING GENERALSHIP AND DEFENCE
Whether OR not you agree with the decision the judges made, it was obvious that Jeff Horn controlled movement inside the ring from the opening round. He continued to pressure Pacquiao with a relentless pace, forcing changes in positioning inside the ring. This was very apparent in the initial 4 rounds, as Pacquiao found himself positioned close to the sides of the ring due to the aggressive tactics of the younger Horn. Despite this, Manny masterfully avoided a large percentage of Horn’s offence as was to be expected, limiting the number of effective punches he incurred. Rounds 5 – 8 were a similar story, with most of the ring movement being directed by Horn, whilst Manny continued evading and countering when the opportunity presented itself. The main thing to take from the opening 8 rounds was that the pace was almost entirely one sided, and whilst Manny displayed elegant defence and effective countering, Horn also showed an impressive defensive repertoire – being far less one-sided than ring generalship. The same cannot be said so much for ninth and tenth rounds, where Manny clearly outboxed Horn in round 9 to the point where the Referee threatened to end the fight if Horn continued to passively box. Although dominant in its display, NO knockdowns OR knockouts were scored, and hence at best received 10-8 scores from the judges. In isolation, these rounds can be seen to show superior fighting from Pacquiao, yet the earlier rounds whereby Horn controlled the pace cannot be diminished. The final rounds could be viewed either way, as both fighters had moments as they both fought to assert dominance in order to give themselves the edge. This makes it difficult to definitively judge an outright winner, giving the earlier rounds much greater impact on the final result. # EFFECTIVE AGGRESSION
It was clear from the outset that Horn was driving a lot of the offense in the ring, which can be confirmed by the post-match statistics which highlight the vast number of punches that Horn threw comparatively to Pacquiao. At the same time, the statistics also show that the effectiveness of Pacquiao’s punches were much higher; throwing more accurate yet less punches than Horn. Despite the statistics, the exchanges during the fight did not represent the statistics and hence it is difficult for the judges to gauge the effectiveness of each punch. In particular, Horn is shown to possess significant power and hence it makes it more difficult to discern an accurate representation. Despite the blatant ease at which the statistics can be interpreted, this is NOT the scenario in the ring, with the combination of all the above factors making the fight appear much more convoluted rather than black and white. # Conclusion
Despite what others may say, from watching the fight I honestly believe Horn did enough did win; he never ceased to continually pressure Pacquiao and he managed to force a largely scrappy, yet determined fight. As for the scorecard of 117-111, 115-113 and 115-113, the unanimous decision may have been slightly farfetched, especially the judges score of 117-111. Nonetheless, these were three judges of diverse backgrounds (Argentinian and American, NO Australian judges) all considered to be experts, and all of which managed to provide almost identical scores for the fight. They are by definition unbiased compared to the remaining media and hence their opinion as boxing experts and professional’s must be respected – whether you agree with what they saw OR not. In the end, even if you don’t agree with my opinion, there is a clause in the Battle of Brisbane contract which stipulates that Pacquiao can request a rematch, a challenge which Jeff Horn has already agreed upon if the former champion sees fit. Such a rematch could provide an opportunity to settle the card once and for all; either rewriting wrongs of the previous fight OR affirming the outcome (Connor McGregor vs Nate Diaz esque anyone?). ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Please **upvote** and **resteem** if you found this piece insightful 😊 → Follow @cryptocj |

| body | (https://steemitimages.com/DQmUdj5eiKMVC5BdAtxaDo5vGU3DUvAt6MYxZZ2nrd79u1B/image.png) Hi Steemians :) I want to start off by apologising for my inconsistent posting over the last few days; I have been unwell and was in the middle of completing exams. Alas, they are all complete now, meaning I can get back to sharing my knowledge and ideas with all of you. One thing I’ve delayed for a while is giving you a proper insight into who I am, so I thought I’d kick things off again by doing just that. My name is James, and I’m studying Biomedicine in Melbourne, Australia. In all honesty, I have always had a love for science yet I don’t know what quite set me down the path of wanting to study medicine. I believe it is something to do with the fact that I spent a lot of time around hospitals as a child, which exposed me to the positive impact that medical professionals yielded over the lives of their patients. I’ve always wanted to help people, and spending time in that environment over a series of years made me realise that I could blend two of my passions, science and improving other peoples lives, together into a career. That goal has been a driving force behind who I am and where I am today, and strangely is also what brings me to this community. Where does blogging fit into all of this? It’s all about trying to inform and engage with people in their own lives. Simply, I want to be able to positively impact the as many people as I can reach. Steemit provides the perfect blueprint for me to do exactly that, through sharing knowledge I have gained through study OR a critical opinion I have on a particular issue. Due to the abundance of information available to everyone with quite literally the click of a button, you never quite know what to believe and what not to believe; hence, my aim is to hopefully breakdown this barrier a little bit – especially in relation to medical debates and issues. Nonetheless, there is more to me than just a single mission. I’ve always been an avid writer – someone who will actively sit down and just write on whatever is on my mind. As such, occasionally I will produce other pieces such as fiction and a variety of other pieces. I have had such an interesting and engaging experience so far on this amazing platform and have enjoyed the interaction with everyone on Steemit, especially my followers. I hope I can continue to actively contribute and create useful content for this space. I look forward to what’s to come. Till later, adios. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Please **upvote** and **resteem** if you found this piece insightful 😊 • Follow @cryptocj |
