      "body": "In another interesting development, Russia has convinced the IMF and the World Bank to allow the ruble to be the world reserve currency. Okay, I know the collusion story really got you, but on a serious note, Putin made a move against the U.S. dollar. Theories have been floating around for years about trade settlements and whether they’d be in gold trade notes, SDRs, or continuing in dollars. Well, in a move that has taken some time, Russian President Vladimir Putin instructed the government to approve legislation that makes the ruble the main currency at all Russian seaports. The information was posted on the Kremlin website and reported by RT. Many Russian seaports are still priced in U.S dollars, even though they are state-owned. For this switch, there will be a transition phase for companies to meet their foreign currency obligations. According to this report, Putin had proposed this a year and a half ago, but it didn’t gain any momentum because the large transport companies preferred to keep their currencies in dollars. The Russian government made it a mission to make these companies understand the implications of holding dollars, even though these companies hated holding the volatile ruble. If the Russians no longer hold dollars and do settlements in rubles, it will force foreigners to hold rubles. This will create demand for rubles and stabilize it. The timing of this move makes one ponder as the relationship between Russia and the U.S. deteriorates. Does Putin want to create his own petroruble? Does Putin see the slide in the dollar as an opportunity to make the switch while other countries are divesting their dollar holdings?\n\n\n\nPutin has warned for some time that the global financial system is unfairly leveraged and that leveling the playing field is necessary. At the recent BRICS conference, Putin stated, “Russia shares the BRICS countries’ concerns over the unfairness of the global financial and economic architecture, which does not give due regard to the growing weight of the emerging economies. We are ready to work together with our partners to promote international financial regulation reforms to overcome the excessive domination of the limited number of reserve currencies.”\n\nAlthough 60% of global reserves, 80% of global payments, and virtually 100% of oil sales are in dollars, this trend has steadily moved downward. Russia will happily move away from dollars, and Venezuela announced they won’t accept them either.   President Maduro stated in an address, “Venezuela is going to implement a new system of international payments and will create a basket of currencies to free us from the dollar… If they pursue us with the dollar, we’ll use the Russian ruble, the yuan, yen, the Indian rupee, the euro.” Additionally, the WSJ reports that oil traders have been changing their invoices to euros.       "body": "In a story that broke in January, a Federal Reserve Board of Directors employee was fined for mining Bitcoin on a server owned by the central bank. Nicholas Berthaume, was a communications analyst for the board. He pled guilty to one count of unlawful conversion of government property, a misdemeanor.  Berthaume, according to court documents, was mining Bitcoin on the Fed server for 2 years between 2012 and 2014.  Fed board Inspector General Mark Bialek stated, “Berthaume modified certain security safeguards so that he could remotely access the server from home. When confronted about these actions, Berthaume initially denied any knowledge of the wrongdoing. Later, however, Berthaume remotely deleted the software that he had installed in an effort to conceal his actions.” The amount of Bitcoin mined was not known, but I would imagine that the $5,000 fine was nothing compared to it.  I guess the Bitcoin craze caught on so much that the private central bank’s own employee couldn’t resist it.  \n\nRecently, another government employee was caught mining Bitcoin in New York. The New York City Conflicts of Interest Board has drafted disciplinary action against Vladimir Ilyayev, an employee of the city’s Department of Education. Public records show that Vladimir installed mining software that ran at night on his work computer and monitored its progress from his home.  He stated, “I ran Bitcoin mining software on my work computer from 6 p.m. until 6 a.m. every night from March 19th, 2014 until April 17th, 2014 when my Bitcoin mining software was shut down by the Department of Education’s Division of Instructional and Information Technology.” Ilyayev was fired for violating the city’s statutes and was forced to pay $611 in fines. I’d say $611 was well worth the return of mining Bitcoin.  \n\nAll of this comes as the credibility of central banks across the world continues to be questioned. There are constant inflation target misses, as indicated by the Personal Consumption Expenditure Price Index.  This measures the price of goods and services, excluding the price of food and energy. Fed officials use this indicator to monitor their 2% inflation target. In this graph below, you can see that June hit 1.5% and the core rate is stagnating.  They utilize this metric in order to raise rates. The problem with this gigantic Keynesian experiment is that the inflationists do not realize the extent in which they affect prices.  Rising prices from expanding the fiat quantity of money move the increased amount of liquidity into monetary preferences at one point or another.  Central banks do not have an accurate gauge of the liquidity in the market, as evidenced by their lack of knowledge of money vs. goods.  If they understood the value of money in terms of goods, the money stock would not change in the manner in which it has.  Central banks have manipulated people’s preferences by unsound monetary policies.  \n\nDeflationists look at falling prices as evidence of deteriorating economic conditions and falling prices.  Interestingly enough, falling prices are an attribute of sound money.  Governments fear deflation because as the debt burden becomes greater due to it, you need more of that currency to pay back the debt.  They fear that falling prices will lead to destruction of an already fragile banking system.  Absorbing the losses from an economic downturn will not be possible, as citizens will scramble for cash to meet debt obligations.  In recent meetings, the Fed has made it clear that it wants to normalize its balance sheet.  This can mean only one thing: the mortgage-backed securities are now worth something or they are preparing for the next financial crisis.  The Bank of International Settlements has warned us that we could be on the precipice of a new crisis, even as the Bank of England determines who to lend to.  While directing other banks to boost capital reserves, the Fed and the Bank of England still miss the point.  Inflation is driven by high levels of money in the system that is being unwound. It is almost certain that the last mess has not been unwound as the banks attempt to prepare for the next crisis.  \n\nInevitably, the Fed will inject the system with more money to keep the banks afloat and zombie businesses alive.  Prices will rise and interest rates will rise with them, leaving central banks with no other choice but to inflate once more.  Bankers may be able to hold off a crisis for a short period of time, but goods and services will eventually rise substantially because businesses have no more room for debt. It is no coincidence that a 1988 edition of the Economist magazine had fiat burning and a new currency coming in 2018. Central banks have manipulated people’s preferences by unsound monetary policies.  \n\n    Deflationists look at falling prices as evidence of deteriorating economic conditions and falling prices.  Interestingly enough, falling prices are an attribute of sound money.  Governments fear deflation because as the debt burden becomes greater due to it, you need more of that currency to pay back the debt.  They fear that falling prices will lead to destruction of an already fragile banking system.  Absorbing the losses from an economic downturn will not be possible, as citizens will scramble for cash to meet debt obligations.  In recent meetings, the Fed has made it clear that it wants to normalize its balance sheet.  This can mean only one thing: the mortgage-backed securities are now worth something or they are preparing for the next financial crisis.  The Bank of International Settlements has warned us that we could be on the precipice of a new crisis, even as the Bank of England determines who to lend to.  While directing other banks to boost capital reserves, the Fed and the Bank of England still miss the point.  Inflation is driven by high levels of money in the system that is being unwound. It is almost certain that the last mess has not been unwound as the banks attempt to prepare for the next crisis.  \n\n    Inevitably, the Fed will inject the system with more money to keep the banks afloat and zombie businesses alive.  Prices will rise and interest rates will rise with them, leaving central banks with no other choice but to inflate once more.  Bankers may be able to hold off a crisis for a short period of time, but goods and services will eventually rise substantially because businesses have no more room for debt. It is no coincidence that a 1988 edition of the Economist magazine had fiat burning and a new currency coming in 2018.
