| title | KCP&L opens first solar farm |
| body | The sun could soon help power up your house. Kansas City Power & Lighting (KCP&L) recently opened up its first solar panel farm, and it could help you save money on your energy bill. KCP&L officials envision a future where many have solar panels on their roofs, and the sunshine powers up your home. But before that becomes a reality, they want to figure out how best to collect the sun’s rays and use it. Officials recently installed 11,500 solar panels on farmland right outside their Greenwood, MO power plant, and they currently power up more than 400 nearby homes. Initially, customers will pay more because of the cost of the equipment, the photo-voltaic panels are not cheap. But in the long-term, customers will see lower energy bills and save money since sunlight is a free natural resource. In recent years, KCP&L has tried to get away from depending solely on coal-fired power plants. 40-percent of its energy supply comes from wind farms, nuclear power and now, solar energy. KCP&L officials say Kansas City is one of the top ten sunniest areas in the U.S., making it ideal for solar power. They say the goal is to eventually build more solar panel farms at their other power plants before expanding the program to your rooftop. Do you think the Kansas City will be the new home for solar power? Let us know in the comments below. |

| title | The Future of Biofuel Isn't Corn - It's Algae |
| body | When you hear “biofuel,” people tend to assume you’re talking about corn. That makes sense, given that corn is anticipated to provide 80 percent of this year’s ethanol production — much more, say, than algae — until we consider a few numbers. By all accounts, microalgae is less land-intensive than corn production, and although it can pull double duty, providing high-quality feed for fish farms, it doesn’t compete with food crops. Furthermore, even by the largely pro-corn Renewable Fuel Association’s water-consumption standards, corn ethanol is a thirsty fuel: Drinking 2.8 gallons of water for every gallon of fuel refined, corn is often outclassed in efficiency by algae-based fuels. Algae biofuel frontrunner Algenol, for example, converts plentiful saltwater into biofuel with yields nearly 17 times higher than those of corn, while producing 1.4 gallons of fresh water per every gallon of fuel produced. But simple consumption comparisons between corn and aquatic fuels are often apples-to-oranges affairs at best. Much like the RFA’s figure, which ignores that growing an ethanol-gallon’s worth of corn costs 1,145 gallons of water, these facile metrics often miss something fundamental: Corn biofuel production consumes land, fertilizers, and water, whereas algae biofuel production can filter water, recycle runoff, and ameliorate emissions. But if aquatic fuels are really such a comparatively comprehensive solution, why are we still so obsessed with corn biofuels? The old argument would be that aquatic fuels aren’t yet commercially ready, that costs and yields simply aren’t there yet. But with the Deparment of Energy doubling down on grants for competition-ready aquatic fuels, that story no longer holds up. Simply put, when faced with a burgeoning rank of algae-based platforms boasting well-tested estimate yields up to 2.8 times that of corn, and 32 to 70 percent fewer emissions than gas, corn looks increasingly weak. Macroalgae, or kelp, is a marine biofuel source promising some benefits that outstrip even its single-celled cousin. Unlike terrestrial corn, kelp — cultivated or otherwise g rows into aquatic forests. In essence, the kelp farms that would fuel a marine biofuel industry, would also form the foundation of a functioning ecosystem — one that filters shoreline pollution and sequesters 6.7 tons of carbon per acre. As both kelp cultivation and the push for more sustainable seafood continue to grow, biofuel itself might soon become just another byproduct of an entire sustainable food production system. Aquatic farms and ecosystems are simply more productive than terrestrial monocultures. So once again, perhaps it’s worth asking why we’re still primed to associate biofuel with its most old-fashioned manifestation. Biofuel remains a stepping stool to better solutions — and aquatic biofuel remains more promising than corn. |

| body | Things are happening in energy investing, and solar power is poised to break from the pack, providing savvy investors with an opportunity to invest in the next economy, the future of the planet. Energy generation from solar power continues to gain market share and is highly cost-competitive. The city of Palo Alto, California, for example, recently signed a solar power purchase agreement for just 3.7 cents per kilowatt-hour. In Dubai, unsubsidized electricity from large-scale solar generation sells for $0.0299 per kWh. That’s competitive with any form of fossil-based electricity. Solar power usage is also growing rapidly. The U.S. solar industry installed a record 7.3 GW of solar photo-voltaic in 2015, and that volume is poised to grow 118% in 2016, with installations projected to reach 16 GW. China added 7.1 GW of new solar capacity in the first quarter of 2016 alone. What makes solar so compelling? First, solar and fossil fuels are fundamentally different as energy sources. Fossil resources are commodities. The more demand, the more expensive they become. Solar is a technology-based energy source. Anyone who purchased a mobile phone or a TV knows that technology becomes cheaper as demand for it grows. The same is true for solar. For investors looking to take advantage of sweeping changes to our energy infrastructure, we offer these solar stocks. All of these companies are currently undervalued relative to their prospects, despite having earnings, momentum, and revenue growth. **First Solar: FSLR** - Tempe, Ariz.-based First Solar is the market leader in thin-film solar photo-voltaic technology. From a fundamentals point of view, the company has a wide moat around its IP and technology and leadership has been smart about executing on business. Growth comes from adding capacity without taking on an undue amount of debt and building a dominant position. **Sun Power: SPWR** - SunPower is the most technologically advanced panel manufacturer. The San Jose, California based firm manufactures a panel that converts about 24% of sunlight into electricity. And its panels are warranted for 25 years, while the company expects them to last 40 years. SunPower has a healthy balance sheet and is adding capacity prudently to meet growing demand. **Canadian Solar Inc: CSIQ** - Canadian Solar, headquartered in Guelph, Ontario, is for all intents and purposes a Chinese solar company. As one of the largest and most cost-competitive photo-voltaic panel producers in the world, Canadian Solar has grown bottom-line revenue at 20% a year over the past five years. While there is some international risk in investing with a Chinese firm, Canadian Solar is a great way to add diversification to a renewable energy portfolio. |

"body": "Things are happening in energy investing, and solar power is poised to break from the pack, providing savvy investors with an opportunity to invest in the next economy, the future of the planet.\n\nEnergy generation from solar power continues to gain market share and is highly cost-competitive. The city of Palo Alto, California, for example, recently signed a solar power purchase agreement for just 3.7 cents per kilowatt-hour. In Dubai, unsubsidized electricity from large-scale solar generation sells for $0.0299 per kWh. That’s competitive with any form of fossil-based electricity.\n\nSolar power usage is also growing rapidly. The U.S. solar industry installed a record 7.3 GW of solar photo-voltaic in 2015, and that volume is poised to grow 118% in 2016, with installations projected to reach 16 GW. China added 7.1 GW of new solar capacity in the first quarter of 2016 alone.\n\nWhat makes solar so compelling? First, solar and fossil fuels are fundamentally different as energy sources. Fossil resources are commodities. The more demand, the more expensive they become. Solar is a technology-based energy source. Anyone who purchased a mobile phone or a TV knows that technology becomes cheaper as demand for it grows. The same is true for solar.\n\nFor investors looking to take advantage of sweeping changes to our energy infrastructure, we offer these solar stocks. All of these companies are currently undervalued relative to their prospects, despite having earnings, momentum, and revenue growth.\n\n**First Solar: FSLR** - Tempe, Ariz.-based First Solar is the market leader in thin-film solar photo-voltaic technology. From a fundamentals point of view, the company has a wide moat around its IP and technology and leadership has been smart about executing on business. Growth comes from adding capacity without taking on an undue amount of debt and building a dominant position.\n\n**Sun Power: SPWR** - SunPower is the most technologically advanced panel manufacturer. The San Jose, California based firm manufactures a panel that converts about 24% of sunlight into electricity. And its panels are warranted for 25 years, while the company expects them to last 40 years. SunPower has a healthy balance sheet and is adding capacity prudently to meet growing demand.\n\n**Canadian Solar Inc: CSIQ** - Canadian Solar, headquartered in Guelph, Ontario, is for all intents and purposes a Chinese solar company. As one of the largest and most cost-competitive photo-voltaic panel producers in the world, Canadian Solar has grown bottom-line revenue at 20% a year over the past five years. While there is some international risk in investing with a Chinese firm, Canadian Solar is a great way to add diversification to a renewable energy portfolio.",

| title | UK Wind Generation Falls |
| body | The results from Q1 2016 are in and it shows a decrease in energy production from offshore and land based turbines. From the same period in 2015 power generation was increased 6.4% but overall each turbine was generating less power. The amount of wind and rainfall was reduced from numbers in 2015 and the additional power growth was generated from increased capacity. Total UK renewable energy capacity reached 31.2 GW by the end of the first quarter of 2016, an 11.8% increase on the same period in 2015. But a 3.4% fall in overall electricity generation also boosted the share of renewable energy. Rapid growth in the renewable energy sector has recently been affected by reduced investor confidence following a series of policy roll-backs in 2015. Based upon wind for the most part in Q2 there should be good numbers on the table for the UK power sector. |

| title | Idaho Power - Solar financing offered to customers |
| body | The Idaho Power electrical utility is proposing to construct a solar power project that would be funded by customers who take out subscriptions to guarantee it is built. Plans for the project indicate that the construction would be on land southeast of Boise and would be the state's first utility-owned solar power production facility. The area proposed receives about 4.5 sun hours and would be able to power up to 730 homes. Additional information about the project has been released to encourage residents to take subscriptions in this new service. A 500 KW site about the size of two football fields has been chosen and the project is estimated to cost 1.2 million dollars and greater than 80% will be funded by the subscriptions. The going rate is $740 per 320 watt panel and will get a credit for a portion of the arrays output over a 25 year life span. Although the project is expected to pay back within 15 years, Idaho Power's 516,000 customers have not yet funded the project completely. This project has been specifically designed to help encourage those wanting to support the development of renewable power in the state of Idaho. Similar projects are being considered in Oregon and Washington for their application in providing clean, affordable power at little or no cost of initial installation to the utility. Do you think this project will be successful? Would you invest in another state's clean energy if you saw a decent return? Let us know in the comments below. |

| title | North Carolina ranks 3rd in Nation for Solar Power |
| body | Pretty hard to believe that North Carolina would come up number three in a list of the top solar producers when you add up the number of states that consist of mainly desert. But with recent contract signings between the Department of Navy and Duke Energy that will be the case. The new project at Camp Lejeune has helped to secure this rank by being the fourth largest installation in the state. The facility sites on approximately 80 acres of land nestled between the Naval Hospital and the main gate and supplies the base some of their power needs but also is connected to the local power grid. The facility is currently classified as a model 2 facility, meaning it generates electricity on site which then flows to the external grid for community consumption. Consisting of 50,000 photo-voltaic panels the facility can produce 17 MW of direct current or 13 MW of alternating current which is enough to power around 2,000 homes. Duke Energy spokesman Randy Wheeless mentioned that expansion of renewable energy will continue to grow, citing solar as being a major contributor. Duke Energy expects to start building a solar facility similar to Camp Lejeune at the Naval Support Activity Crane in Indiana at the end of this month. By 2020, the Department of Navy plans to have 50% of its power needs supplied by sources other than oil to limit dependence on other nations. |

| title | California breaks record for Solar Energy Generation |
| body | In California, the solar power industry is having a great summer. For the second time in as many years, the largest electricity grid in the state broke its own solar electricity power generation record. The 8,030 megawatt number was reached just after 13:06 local time on July 12th. The Independent System Operator CAISO reported that this is the equivalent of powering 2 million households. This record did not include any solar power generated from roof mounted systems and included only utility-scale installations. That goes to show that renewable energy is prevalent and could be used to carry technology forward. What do you think about this record and what record do you think will be crossed off next? Let us know in the comments below. |
