Inside of Ethereum, Bitcoin is no longer slow, expensive, and boring. Its exciting and can actually be used for many things outside of speculating on its price within exchanges. Returning to its roots as a programmable P2P electronic cash system, WBTC might just be the new thing that brings some creativity and excitement outside of the volatile price.

Joining DeFi

While WBTC has been around for awhile its adoption and usage so far has been somewhat limited. However, with Compound Finances addition of WBTC to its platform, I can now officially say Bitcoin has joined DeFi.

Users from around the world can now borrow and lend Bitcoin trustless-ly and instantly online with just an Ethereum wallet, and a little know how.
✔ No sign ups
✔ No KYC*
✔ No permission.

What is Wrapped BTC?

In short, WBTC is just an IOU for a Bitcoin from reputable custodians. Some view this as very anti-crypto and hypocritical as it brings trust back into finance. But, that hasnt stopped thousands if not millions of users from storing their coins on centralized exchanges which, essentially, offer them IOUs as well.

At least with WBTC as an ERC20 token IOU, the underlying value can be moved around and enabled to participate in the very exciting DeFi space dominated by Ethereum.

What is a DeFi?

DeFi is an abbreviation for Decentralized Finance industry. Rapidly expanding as the next Ethereum Killer App. The origin of this movement comes from MakerDAOs revolutionary USD based stablecoin DAI and the mechanism behind it.

DAI is effectively $1.5 worth of ETH wrapped in a smart contract that is traded and acts like $1. With a decentralized stablecoin, DEXs (Decentralized Exchanges) finally have the tool they were missing compared to centralized exchanges.

Building on the idea of a trustless decentralized stablecoin a cambrian explosion of financial services and tools has happened in the ETH space.

✔ Trustless loans
✔ Savings accounts
✔ Margin lending
✔ Algorithmic tokens
and more have begun re-inventing the financial world within the ETH platform.

✘ Savings accounts
✘ Central banking
✘ Lending
✘ Trading..
and what seems like almost every other financial activity is not possible on Ethereum.

Bitcoin joining the party

While DeFi has experienced explosive growth over the last couple years and has lots of promise on its own, the addition of Bitcoin and the Bitcoin ecosystem is an exciting addition that could expand the ETH dominated industry further into the cryptoverse and beyond.

It will be exciting to watch and see how the addition of Bitcoin effects and or grows Defi. I can safely say regardless of WBTCs success, DeFi is just getting started and with or without Bitcoin it will succeed. Bitcoin could just make it better and faster.

|

But, that hasnt stopped thousands if not millions of users from storing their coins on centralized exchanges which, essentially, offer them IOUs as well.
\n\n
At least with WBTC as an ERC20 token IOU, the underlying value can be moved around and enabled to participate in the very exciting DeFi space dominated by Ethereum.
\n
\n
What is a DeFi?
\n
DeFi is an abbreviation for Decentralized Finance industry. Rapidly expanding as the next Ethereum Killer App. The origin of this movement comes from MakerDAOs revolutionary USD based stablecoin DAI and the mechanism behind it.
\n
DAI is effectively $1.5 worth of ETH wrapped in a smart contract that is traded and acts like $1. With a decentralized stablecoin, DEXs (Decentralized Exchanges) finally have the tool they were missing compared to centralized exchanges.
\n\n
Building on the idea of a trustless decentralized stablecoin a cambrian explosion of financial services and tools has happened in the ETH space.
\n
✔ Trustless loans
✔ Savings accounts
✔ Margin lending
✔ Algorithmic tokens
and more have begun re-inventing the financial world within the ETH platform.
\n
✘ Savings accounts
✘ Central banking
✘ Lending
✘ Trading..
and what seems like almost every other financial activity is not possible on Ethereum.
\n
\n
Bitcoin joining the party
\n
While DeFi has experienced explosive growth over the last couple years and has lots of promise on its own, the addition of Bitcoin and the Bitcoin ecosystem is an exciting addition that could expand the ETH dominated industry further into the cryptoverse and beyond.
\n
It will be exciting to watch and see how the addition of Bitcoin effects and or grows Defi. I can safely say regardless of WBTCs success, DeFi is just getting started and with or without Bitcoin it will succeed. Bitcoin could just make it better and faster.
\n
\n
",

| title | Bitcoin Loans: Growing in the Bear Market |
| body |

Cryptocurrencies dramatic market boom and bust has been hard on cryptocurrency businesses. Market sentiment is not the only thing down in the dumps, exchange volume, payment usage, and overall new users coming into the space are down as well.

But, there is one industry that is still growing, if not growing faster, and that is Bitcoin Loans. Bitcoin loans have proven to move independent of price, as it serves both sides. Those pessimistic about the price have borrowed and shorted Bitcoin. And those optimistic, borrow against their Bitcoin instead of outright selling. “Hodling” until the price increases again.

While the lending has been done using primarily Bitcoin, the loans are denominated in dollars. Companies that offer these cryptocurrency backed USD loans such as BlockFi are thriving in this cryptocurrency bear market. Salt Lending, which already employs 80 people, is hiring more every month as its revenue inches higher.

From “Hodling” to Shorting

What started as a way to get some cash without without having to sell and miss out on potential gains for enthusiasts “hodling”, has also turned into a shorting mechanism. Shorting works by depositing USD, borrowing cryptocurrency, selling the borrowed crypto, then later buying back at a lower price to pay back the original loan. With the combination of holders and shorters, lending platforms find themselves with twice as many customers and a continuously growing demand for their services.

Genesis Capital, a US based lending company focused institutional investors borrow virtual coins by depositing U.S. dollars, has also reported increased demand for its services. Institutional investors using this service are regularly depositing 7 figure USD sums to borrow cryptocurrency for shorting or other purposes.

New type of Margin lending

It is no secret there are many speculators in the cryptocurrency space. You could even argue that the whole space is speculatory and relatively few fundamentals or actual use cases for the currencies exists at all. But, regardless if its useful or not, 1 things speculators demand is leverage. I mean why not? If you are investing in a highly speculative asset with extreme volatility, why not leverage your bet and “go big or go home”.

Most margin lending happens and historically happened on cryptocurrency exchanges. But, wanting to get a piece of the action lending companies saw a huge opportunity with cryptocurrency backed USD loans and they took it.

While its branded differently and not done on exchanges, crypto backed loans from Nexo, Blockfi, Salt, and other lending platforms are essentially margin loans. As if you read the fine print, if your cryptocurrency holdings fall below a minimum collateral percentage, they will be sold to pay off debt before the loan goes underwater. This is essentially the equivalent of being margin called on an exchange. This ability to liquidate under-collateralized loans greatly reduces risk for lenders and enables them to offer very competitive interest rates for these loans.

Responsible borrowers benefit as well, getting low rates and lots of flexibility. However, for some borrowers who push their holdings too far or don’t pay attention to prices, they can be liquidated during down markets and effectively sell the bottom and incur liquidation fees.

What about Bitcoin Loans?

While USD denominated loans backed by crypto have thrived, Bitcoin denominated loans haven’t quite followed the trend. Volume on popular P2P Bitcoin Lending platform Btcpop.co has been reported down in the bear market. It turns out extreme volatility on the way up and down isn’t necessarily good currency for pricing your loan in. This is relatively expected in such a new market, but it has spurred Btcpop to plan for USD based P2P stablecoin loans in the future.

Other Bitcoin lending platforms such as Bitbond seem to have moved away from Bitcoin completely during this time. Only offering Bitcoin to be used as a payment method, but not necessarily used as a currency for loans on their platform though last time checked it was still a rarely used option.

Bright future for Cryptocurrency Based Lending

Cryptocurrency based lending’s resilience and continued strong growth through both bull and bear markets shows strong staying power in the industry. This strength will likely attract continued investment and development of services in the space. As investors likely desire a uncorrelated investment in crypto, which grows regardless of price volatility. Cryptocurrencies as well, have proven to be a very good source of collateral for USD based loans and reduce the overall loan risk to almost zero.

As the industry and cryptocurrencies develop. It will be exciting to see the emergent growth of cryptocurrency denominated loans as volatility decreases. USD loans are fun, but the Btcloans.org is excited for the take-off of cryptocurrency based loans, even if they are a in a crypto stablecoin form such as MakerDAO’s DAIdecentralized stablecoin.

This document has been composed with the free HTML edior which can be accessed here. This pricing freedom combined with the speculative nature of pricing a brand new asset class makes cryptocurrency a very volatile asset class. With limited and expensive on and off ramps in and out of cryptocurrency, the market came up with a solution to store value volatility free within the blockchain ecosystem, stablecoins.

Stablecoins are cryptocurrency tokens whose price remain stable (usually fixed to a fiat currency like USD). Nearly all stablecoins today areERC20 tokens on the Ethereum blockchain, but the original and most controversial stablecoin tether is also a BTC omni protocol token. These tokens are used by traders on exchanges to store stable fiat currency in a liquid cryptocurrency form on and off exchanges.

Why are they important?

Cryptocurrencies are fantastic technology giving freedom and financial sovereignty back to the individual. However, as of now they are still to volatile to be used effectively for pricing, loans, or any store of value in stable non-speculative way. This is why stablecoins are so important, they allow the good parts of cryptocurrency (programmability, unseizability, decentralization) without the volatility. This means for example a decentralized betting app can allow users to place wagers on long term bets in dollars instead of volatile cryptocurrencies. It is also important for taxes, as if you sell your cryptocurrency for fiat it is a taxable event. This arguably applies to stablecoins as well, but if you are using a decentralized stablecoin such as DAI, that argument becomes a bit more tricky. This is of course not a financial advice, it would be best to consult with a CPA or someone who knows the laws regarding this matter before taking any action.

How Stablecoins work?

There are 3 ways to develop a cryptocurrency with a stable price:

Fiat-collateralized

Crypto-collateralized

Algorithmic based (scam!)

1. Fiat-collateralized

Is the least complicated system of stablecoin to implement. It’s fairly easy to understand. If you deposit any amount of fiat currency, (e.g. US Dollar, EUR,) to a third party, the third party will then issue/create a stablecoin unit equal to the amount of fiat currency you deposit. For cash outs, the third party burns the same amount of stablecoin units for every unit of fiat currency you withdraw. Some fiat-collateralized structure examples are, Tether, TrueUSD, USDC, GUSD, and PAX.Pros:

Easy to grasp and conceptualize.

Value or price will match USD or other fiat currency with certainty, if properly implemented (digitized dollars without capital controls)

Cons:

Trusting a third-party to hold your fiat collateral

Another third-party is needed to audit and verify to make sure that the number of Stablecoins issued matches the the number of deposits.

Third party audits are slow and expensive.

The success of fiat-collateralized stablecoins relies on third-parties. So a third-party has to be really transparent, because, they’re responsible for custody and issuance, and auditing. This is where Tether.to became controversial as the USDT token grew dramatically in supply and stopped releasing audit reports.

2. Crypto-collateralized

Crypto-collateralized stablecoins are a much more interesting project. The tokens act much the same, but in the backend they are much more complicated than just holding a USD in a bank account. Crypto collateralized assets rely on overcollateralization of cryptocurrencies to keep their peg. The 2 main examples are done using transparent smart contracts “on-chain” which eliminates the need for third parties and keeps the stablecoin quite decentralized. The concern with this method, however, is that cryptocurrency is a highly volatile asset. To reduce the high risk and to have some security against significant drops in crypto prices, the collateral ratios are higher than your typical margin lending ratio. Crypto-collateralized offerings usually have a 2:1 ratio, sometimes even greater to account for volatility. 2 examples of these are Bitshares Smart Assets’ (bitUSD, bitCNY), and MakerDAO’s (ERC20 DAI token.)

Pros:

Eliminates third parties. No need to give custody and trust on a third party and relying on another to audit.

Issuing and burning stable coin units are way faster, cheaper, and better liquidity because of the ability to conduct on-chain.

Cons:

Not capital efficient

Complex selection process if a basket of cryptocurrencies; questionable price stability/security if just one cryptocurrency

3. Decentralized Stablecoins

Decentralized Stablecoins paved the way for everyday adoption. Many crypto enthusiast, especially the OG’s (old guys) have become accustomed to the volatility and difficulty pricing cryptocurrencies. But, for new users it can be very complicated how a coffee costs .012 BTC one day, .008 the next, and .0183 the next after that. For those that support the P2P money movement, but also are not speculators or very knowledgeable, stablecoins are a great solution. Quick, easy, cheap, P2P payments denominated in a familiar currency are a much easier way to get introduced to the cryptocurrency space as opposed to complicated, slow, expensive BTC transactions of old.And for decentralized stablecoins like DAI and bitUSD the value is still captured in ETH, and BTS blockchains driving the cryptocurrency value up. Each DAI for example at the time of writing is backed by $3 worth of ETH. So that $3 worth of ETH is not for sale and taken out of supply in the supply/demand function of price. While stablecoins still have to deal with volatility on the backend through liquidation of undercollateralized tokens, that can be done by savvy crypto users. So the new crypto user with the decentralized stablecoin retains the easy user friendly experience on the front end.

|

| body | Thank you so much for sharing this amazing post with us! Have you heard about Partiko? It’s a really convenient mobile app for Steem! With Partiko, you can easily see what’s going on in the Steem community, make posts and comments (no beneficiary cut forever!), and always stayed connected with your followers via push notification! Partiko also rewards you with Partiko Points (3000 Partiko Point bonus when you first use it!), and Partiko Points can be converted into Steem tokens. You can earn Partiko Points easily by making posts and comments using Partiko. We also noticed that your Steem Power is low. We will be very happy to delegate 15 Steem Power to you once you have made a post using Partiko! With more Steem Power, you can make more posts and comments, and earn more rewards! If that all sounds interesting, you can: - Download Partiko Android at [Google Play](http://bit.ly/2SRFIta) - Or Download Partiko iOS on the [App Store](https://apple.co/2PcXkSd) Thank you so much for reading this message! |
