| body | A picture's worth a thousand words, so here's a nice recent snap from Berlin's Tiergarten, one of my favorite places for a good walk in my city of Berlin. In January 2015, my grandfather passes away. He lived far away, so unfortunately I never got to know him as well as I would have liked. But after his death, after reflecting upon his life, it inspired me to be more like him. I knew three things about him: 1. He loved to walk. Even into his late 80s, he would regularly walk up to 3 miles every day. 2. He loved talking to people. He would talk to anyone who looked interesting. I have one vivid memory of him stopping another man in the streets of Dublin. The man was wearing a [hurling](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fgEMvRrOCRI) jersey, a game my grandfather had long played when he was younger. The two ended up standing and talking right there on the street for a good hour. 3. He was Irish and it showed. It was these three characteristics I worked to build in myself. I started walking everywhere, being more open with strangers, and in 2016 got my Irish passport. |

In order for what you suggest to work, you would have to convince those making money off of the current situation to give it up, which would go against their own interest and wallet. |

| body | I would not let the pedantic details of what currently exists or does not exist bog you down. You and I are saying the same thing. I am simply using language (read: decentralized government) to express concepts that don't exist today, but that may exist in some form or another in the future. As you put it, this would mean eliminating parts of the government in favor of systems that provide it in a decentralized manner. While the resources, procurement of, or delivery of such goods and services might not belong to a centralized government, I think it is safe to say that it is a good place for a dApp to be introduced to mediate such public goods and services. In this sense, the mediation of goods and services would be centralized. In such a system, I would not want to have to deal with N number of dApps for N number of public goods. I would expect some sort of consolidation for certain goods and services into a single dApp. |

| body | exhibit A: a garbage man who is happy because he's getting paid in appcoins Recently, I sat down with a mentor of mine and we got to talking - really nerding out - about the possibilities of the blockchain. One of the topics that our conversation grew into was the topic of currencies and their isolation within specific distributed applications. What do I mean by isolation? Well, think about the United States Dollar (USD). We use the USD for everything; we use it to buy our groceries, pay our rent, or for services such as lap dances. The USD has uses all across the entirety of human interaction (read: 'the' economy) and so, in this sense, the USD is not isolated. Not only does the USD span across the entirety of the US economy, its value is of course also closely tied to many components of the entire world economy at large. Cryptocurrencies, or more specifically, [**appcoins**](https://coincenter.org/entry/what-are-appcoins) are, on the other hand, isolated within the distributed apps they reside in. But I digress as this a tangent which detracts from what I want to focus on. Let's definitely come back to it in a later post, though. The folks over at [**coincenter.com**]() put it nicely, when they said: "**Open platforms have proved difficult to create because it has been historically difficult to monetize them even if they become successful—by nature they are public goods.**" Ok. So this all makes sense, especially when you think of internet 'projects' such as Twitter or SoundCloud. Many would find it hard to argue with the idea that these services provide immense value to society. For example, Twitter was *the* place for information during the [**2011 earthquake in Japan**](http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/twitter/8379101/Japan-earthquake-how-Twitter-and-Facebook-helped.html). Chance the Rapper gives a shoutout to SoundCloud at the Grammy's. And SoundCloud is attributed with the birth of whole new music genres and [**the unearthing of blockbuster talent**](https://www.theverge.com/2017/2/12/14594672/chance-the-rapper-grammy-awards-2017-soundcloud), adding to the colorful fabric of human culture. Where these platforms have fallen flat is monetizing. Again, at this point, I have more or less made some pretty obvious statements for anyone living above ground and out from under rocks. So the question is: if decentralizing apps will create an ecosystem where such public-good-like platforms can thrive, would this also apply to other public goods, in real life (IRL)? Is it feasible to incentivize public services and goods using blockchain technology? I will end this here and hopefully it is a nice place for us all to start a discussion. Look out for further musings on this topic and more. |

| body | The underlying assumption within our current economic system is that public goods are not monetizable, so a centralized government should provide them. So should we assume that that will continue with the introduction of blockchain technologies? This could already be the case. | body | I ended [**my previous post**](https://steemit.com/blockchain/@bdeely/what-if-we-used-blockchain-for-part-1-funding-public-goods) with a big question: **If decentralizing apps will create an ecosystem where such public-good-like platforms** [like Twitter or SoundCloud] **can thrive, would this also apply to other public goods, in real life (IRL), such as trash pickup or ?** This may be a bit anti-climactic, however, **I don't believe that the blockchain will stretch this far**. Public goods IRL ought to, simply for moral reasons as human beings, be provided to everyone, regardless of whether an individual has paid for the good or not. In the example of the garbage pickup, I might be a wealthy and successful business man and my neighbor might be someone who is down on luck in life and unemployed. If we both had to pay for garbage pickup, that might mean that I get mine picked up while my neighbor has to live with an ever-growing pile of trash. This would be **morally reprehensible**. While certain goods and services might not synergize nicely with blockchain, this thought experiment certainly does inspire a number of use cases. For example: 1. Post New Year's street and park cleanups. Have you ever seen the amount of trash strewn about streets and parks after holidays like New Year's? While we do incentivize people to pick up bottles and cans with recycling deposits, it may be feasible to extend this to all types of waste pickup. 2. Getting someone to install something at your home. Have you ever needed things installed, but didn't have the knowledge or tools to do so? I certainly have. Imagine if you could wire someone appcoins to come over and help you out with that. In both of these cases, a dApp with similar features to [**TaskRabbit**](https://www.taskrabbit.com/) might do the trick. |

| body | I ended [**my previous post**](https://steemit.com/blockchain/@bdeely/what-if-we-used-blockchain-for-part-1-funding-public-goods) with a big question: **If decentralizing apps will create an ecosystem where such public-good-like platforms** [like Twitter or SoundCloud] **can thrive, would this also apply to other public goods, in real life (IRL), such as trash pickup or ?** This may be a bit anti-climactic, however, **I don't believe that the blockchain will stretch this far**. |

The underlying assumption within our current economic system is that public goods are not monetizable, so a centralized government should provide them. So should we assume that that will continue with the introduction of blockchain technologies? Or would it be possible to have a 'decentralized' government of sorts sort many public goods and services out for us? |

| body | exhibit A: a garbage man who is happy because he's getting paid in appcoins Recently, I sat down with a mentor of mine and we got to talking - really nerding out - about the possibilities of the blockchain. The folks over at [**coincenter.com**]() but it nicely, when they said: "**Open platforms have proved difficult to create because it has been historically difficult to monetize them even if they become successful—by nature they are public goods.**" Chance the Rapper gives a shoutout to SoundCloud at the Grammy's. Ok. So this all makes sense, especially when you think of internet 'projects' such as Twitter or SoundCloud. Many would find it hard to argue with the idea that these services provide immense value to society. For example, Twitter was **the** place for information during the [**2011 earthquake in Japan**](http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/twitter/8379101/Japan-earthquake-how-Twitter-and-Facebook-helped.html). |

This is a great platform to express yourself just like any other social media outlet except this one pays its users for interacting with each other.
