      "body": "In 2017, Ernst & Young (EY) issued a damning report on ICO. Among others, the report highlights on ICOs that utilise the Ethereum platform to take advantage of the smart contract application. It says, “Terms and functionality of a token are defined in smart contracts with program code that can hide risks for all ICO participants. It can contain errors or latent terms or use unsafe algorithms that may result in losses for investors, founders or platform users.” (EY, December 2017)\n\nBut is this always the case?\n\nThe idea of smart contracts was originally described by computer scientist and cryptographer Nick Szabo in 1993. He explained his idea by portraying smart contracts as a digital vending machine where users could input data or value, and receive a finite item from a machine, in this case a real-world snack or a soft drink.\n\nEthereum’s smart contracts work very similar to what Szabo had in mind. To put it simply, smart contracts are applications that run exactly as programmed without any possibility of downtime, censorship, fraud or third-party interference. In this, smart contracts are very transparent and with high integrity.\n\nHowever, the very advantages of smart contracts can also be their downsides, as highlighted by the EY report. The owner or programmer of the smart contracts can easily manipulate the coding of the contract to benefit themselves. This is when auditing of smart contracts become an utmost importance. Muslims are prohibited to get involved in gharar (uncertain) activities, what more things that are clearly haram (forbidden). Hence, a Shariah-compliant crypto is definitely a huge advantage for Muslims who are looking to participate in the ever-volatile cryptocurrency world.\n\nFor a token to be certified as Shariah-compliant, it needs to meet a set of strict conditions and only highly qualified Shariah scholars are able to certify it. For example, an asset must contain real value to make it Shariah-compliant. This concept is very important to ensure justice is upheld in every commercial transaction. It’s an open secret that most of cryptocurrencies’ values out there are based on speculation only and not backed by real assets.\n\nAnother instance is there must be no element of excessive uncertainty in every aspect of an asset to make it Shariah compliant.       "body": "Based on strong chemical and lab research, the Basella alba leaf extract is suggested for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia.\n\nHypercholesterolemia is the presence of high levels of cholesterol in the blood. An increased level of cholesterol can raise the risks of cardiovascular diseases and stroke.\n\nAccording to a study by the World Health Organization, hypercholesterolemia is estimated to cause 2.6 million deaths annually and 29.7 million disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) in the global population. In Malaysia, coronary heart disease and stroke are two of the top causes of death. In a report published by WHO in May 2014, deaths caused by coronary heart disease reached 29,363 deaths and stroke deaths were 15,497 mortality.\n\nCurrently, statins are the only drug administered to patients as a prescribed medicine to treat cardiovascular diseases in the early stages for those with an elevated risk of cardiovascular disease. However, according to a study on the side effects of statin, though they are generally well tolerated, it can cause potentially severe side effects such as myopathy or rhabdomyolysis and polyneuropathy. Long-term consumption of statins causes severe adverse effects such as muscle and liver damage, rhabdomyolysis and acute renal failure. Additionally, a 2010 research review found that statins did not prevent mortality among people who were at risk of developing heart disease, only those who already have a history of heart diseases or heart attacks.\n\nDue to these side effects, attention is now directed towards alternative medicines of plant origin.\n\nThe present study provides preliminary data that suggested the Basella alba leaf extract is capable of lowering cholesterol levels. In addition, the compounds of the leaf extract have been reported to possess beneficial effects in treating hypercholesterolemia and its related diseases. Studies in vivo models could give further insights into the effects and roles of B. alba as an alternative therapeutic agent in the prevention and management of hypercholesterolemia.\n\nWe believe that the development of a health supplement using the Basella alba leaf extract has the market potential to become a natural alternative to statins, not only in the domestic Malaysian market but also globally.
