Si analizamos y profundizamos en el asunto siempre vamos a concluir que quienes más se benefician de este gran negocio son los mismos que las prohíben.\nSolo por mencionar un ejemplo, en Estados Unidos existe una ley llamada The Marihuana Tax Act of 1937, esta ley fue impulsada y financiada por Andrew Mellon, Randolph Hearst, y la familia Du Pont quienes necesitaban en aquel entonces eliminar la competencia que significaban los productos derivados de esta planta para su industria plástica.\nVamos a seguir nuestra labor educativa y definitivamente tenemos que seguir escribiendo artículos con esta misma line ideológica y que sirva para que los que tengan oídos que oigan.",

Siempre se habla de ellas con cierto miedo y vergüenza, fruto de la mala imagen que se tiene de ellas en la sociedad por la constante campaña mediática que se lleva contra ellas en las últimas décadas. Pero una vez aceptadas como una más de las sustancias que puede consumir el ser humano para satisfacer sus necesidades, los argumentos a favor de su prohibición y difamación parecen difuminarse.\n\n###Contra la legalización\n\nEl argumento que más se utiliza a favor de la ilegalización es la salud. Existe un consenso sobre que las drogas afectan negativamente a la salud, aunque en muchos casos menos de lo que piensa la mayoría de la gente. Este argumento por sí mismo no parece suficiente por dos motivos.\n\nPrimero, cada ser humano debe tener responsabilidad sobre sí mismo y sus acciones. Si alguien libremente decide consumir sustancias que empeoran su salud nadie debería oponerse a ello por la fuerza. El segundo, de carácter más práctico, es que ya existen sustancias que dañan la salud e incluso podrían considerarse drogas que están legalizadas y relativamente aceptada, como el alcohol, la cafeína, la nicotina (cigarrillos) y, en menor medida, el cannabis. Además estas sustancias aceptadas no son las menos dañinas, sino que se encuentran entre las más peligrosas para el ser humano.\n\nOtro argumento ampliamente usado en contra de la legalización es que se produciría un aumento masivo del consumo y por lo tanto de la adicción. Hoy el acceso a las drogas es relativamente fácil aun estando ilegalizadas, por lo que aquel interesado en probarlas probablemente lo haga. Además al igual que en el ámbito de la salud, no todas las sustancias adictivas están prohibidas. De hecho, la nicotina se considera que tiene el máximo potencial de adicción y sigue siendo una de las sustancias más populares y aceptadas socialmente. No parece seguir ningún principio claro ni ninguna lógica que el Estado decida a que podemos ser adictos y a que no.\n\nTambién se arguye contra las drogas el hecho de que puedan constituir un “riesgo público”. El argumento contra esta afirmación es el mismo que contra las anteriores. Añadiría que existen mecanismos menos intrusivos para la libertad que solucionarían el problema del “riesgo público”, como el endurecimiento de las penas para desincentivar estos comportamientos temerarios, o la adición de cláusulas en los seguros que hagan mucho más costoso para el asegurado el verse envuelto en accidentes estando bajo los efectos de las drogas.\n\nExiste un argumento utilizado en menor medida contra la legalización de las drogas pero que merece atención también. Se trata de que la droga puede producir individuos inútiles, dejando ciertos recursos ociosos en la economía. Esto podría resultar cierto en los casos más extremos de adicción, como se puede dar hoy en día con los niveles más altos de alcoholismo. Este problema tendría fácil solución a partir de contratos entre empresa y trabajador que prohibieran a este último consumir drogas, tal y como ocurre con el dopaje en los deportistas habitualmente. Además, incluso admitiendo esto como un problema en general, el Estado no tiene autoridad moral alguna para obligar a alguien a elegir entre ser adicto o ser productivo.\n\n###A favor de la legalización\n\nPero las drogas y su legalización también tienen varios aspectos positivos, muchas veces más difíciles de encontrar debido a la cultura de desinformación que existe a su alrededor. El argumento más claro y más general a favor de las drogas es el de la libertad individual y la autopropiedad. Todos los individuos deberían ser libres y responsables de hacer lo que quieran con su cuerpo, incluidas las drogas que decidan consumir. Esto incluye asumir responsablemente las consecuencias que puedan acarrear para si mismos y pagar por las que puedan acarrear a los demás\n\nOtro argumento a favor de la legalización es la incierta definición de droga o, mejor dicho, la difusa línea que separa lo legal de lo ilegal. Como ya he comentado anteriormente, las drogas no parecen estar legalizadas en función de su potencial de adicción o daño al organismo. Así como las drogas legales están ampliamente aceptadas, cualquier droga que llevara ese tiempo legalizada también llegaría a ese nivel de aceptación social.\n\nTampoco hay que olvidar que las drogas tienen efectos positivos que la escasa educación existente sobre el tema se empeña en ocultar, pero que de no existir harían de su consumo una estupidez. Uno de los usos más aceptados para las drogas en la actualidad es el tratamiento del dolor y la angustia en los pacientes de enfermedades terminales, quienes en ciertos países tienen acceso a cannabis o incluso a LSD. A pesar de ello, ambas sustancias están total o casi totalmente prohibidas en la mayoría de los países, por lo que un gran número de personas se ven privadas de su uso terapéutico, ya sea recomendado o no por un especialista.\n\nOtro de los efectos positivos más conocidos de las drogas, pero que parece tener poco peso en los poderes estatales, es la potenciación de la creatividad, tanto artística como científica. Son muchos los testimonios de grandes personalidades de las artes y las ciencias que sitúan a la droga como una gran fuente de inspiración. Existen incluso drogas que incitan a la autoexploración y el autoconocimiento, dos actividades intelectualmente muy aprovechables en cualquier ser humano.\n\nEntre las personalidades que consumían habitualmente drogas por sus efectos positivos encontramos a grandes genios como Friedrich Nietzsche, Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Sigmund Freud, Thomas Edison, cuyos logros son de sobra conocidos y a otros menos publicitados como el astrofísico Carl Sagan, el descubridor de la estructura de doble hélice del ADN Francis Crick, o el escritor Ken Kesey por citar algunos ejemplos.\n\nPor último, existe un efecto positivo y muy criticado de las drogas: el entretenimiento. Los efectos de las drogas son muy variados, y muchos de ellos pueden ser utilizados sin más objetivo que pasar un buen rato, ya sea por la euforia, por la empatía o por las alucinaciones, pero no parece haber ningún argumento sólido a favor de prohibir este entretenimiento en favor de ningún otro sin violar la libertad individual.\n\nTambién existe un efecto positivo de la legalización que actualmente admite poca discusión, como es la reducción de la violencia. En un entorno donde las drogas se consideran una sustancia más el poder de los narcotraficantes desparece y con él toda la violencia que ejercen para mantener su posición. Una guerra es una guerra, y el caso de la guerra contra las drogas no es menos. Cada año se pierde un gran número de vidas en esta lucha y se mantiene a un gran número de personas cautivas de un sistema inevitablemente violento, ya que las disputas no pueden resolverse por medio de tribunales u otros medios pacíficos.\n\nLa legalización haría que el poder tan concentrado en los grandes narcos se trasladara a los pequeños productores y distribuidores, que ya no tendrían que temer a la violencia de sus “capos” cuando no lograran sus objetivos, sino a la decepción de sus clientes y a las decisiones de los tribunales, equiparando la industria de la droga a cualquier otro negocio en cuanto a conflictividad de se refiere. Además, el fin de la violencia repercutiría en un menor “riesgo público” causado por las drogas, ayudando también como argumento contra aquella afirmación.\n\nOtro argumento de gran peso a la hora de abogar por la legalización es la mejora económica que supondría. Para empezar, el mercado de la droga es un mercado muy ineficiente, ya que la prohibición impide que la oferta y la demanda reales se igualen. Una vez legalizadas las drogas, estas aumentarían su calidad y reducirían su precio, ya que los productores y distribuidores dejarían de soportar los costes de esconder la actividad de las autoridades y el riesgo asociado a las posibles sanciones legales. Esta disminución del precio provocaría que la criminalidad asociada al consumo de drogas también disminuyese, ya que aquellos que delinquen para obtener los recursos necesarios para comprarlas necesitarían menos recursos, pudiendo llegar incluso a poder obtenerlos por vías legales.\n\nAdemás, el aumento de la calidad reduciría la cantidad de sobredosis involuntarias y envenenamientos fruto de la adulteración que sufren hoy en día las drogas y ante la que poco pueden hacer los consumidores. Todo esto contribuiría a reducir el efecto negativo de las drogas sobre la salud.\n\nOtras razón para la legalización de las drogas es la posibilidad de que los gobiernos obtengan también beneficios a través de los impuestos sobre las mismas. Esta es una posibilidad que no concuerda con la visión de libre mercado y mínima imposición de los libertarios pero que no debería desperdiciarse como argumento útil para la lucha por la legalización.\n\nUn último argumento a favor de la legalización, mezcla de varios de los anteriores, es el derecho de las personas a autodestruirse por el medio que deseen. Las drogas también pueden matar si son consumidas en cantidades suficientes, pudiendo constituir un método, probablemente más agradable, de suicidio o incluso de eutanasia.\n\n###Conclusión\n\nActualmente parece que existe una lenta tendencia hacia la legalización de las drogas, sobre todo el cannabis, aunque todavía queda la mayoría del camino por recorrer. Algunos de los países más avanzados en este tema son Holanda, donde la venta bajo estrictas normas y el consumo son legales; algunos estados de Estados Unidos, donde la venta y el consumo son libres; o República Checa, donde la tenencia hasta ciertos límites tanto de cannabis como de heroína es legal.\n\nA pesar de ciertos avances, aún queda un largo camino por recorrer en el tema de la liberalización de las drogas, aunque parece ser un problema de educación más que de bienestar. Deberían ser los propios ciudadanos los que a través del conocimiento adquirido pudiesen decidir que sustancias consumir, sabiendo tanto las ventajas como las desventajas, no el Estado, a través de la violencia y la desinformación, el que decidiera que podemos tomar y que no.",

We always talk about them with certain fear and shame, product of the bad image society has about them because of the constant media campaign orchestrated against them in the past few decades. But once accepted as one of the many substances that humans can consume to satisfy their needs, arguments for their prohibition seem to fade away. \n\nThe most used argument for illegalization is health. A consensus about the negative effects of drugs on health does exist, but in most cases these effects are not as harmful as most of the people believe. This argument by itself seems s insufficient for two reasons.\n\nFirst, each human being should be responsible of himself and of his actions. If someone freely chooses to consume substances that worsen his health no one should oppose to it by force. Second, from a more practical point of view, there are substances that harm our health that are legal and relatively accepted, like alcohol, caffeine, nicotine and, less extended, cannabis. Also, these accepted substances are not the least harmful, the contrary, they are within the most dangerous for humans. \n\nAnother argument widely used against legalization is that it would produce a massive increase in the consumption and, hence, of the addiction. Nowadays access to drugs is relativelt easy even if they are illegalized, so those interested in trying them will probably do. Also, like in the case of health, not all the addictive substances are banned. In fact, nicotine is considered with the highest addiction potential and it remains one of the most popular and socially accepted substances. What the government decides that we can be addict to does not seem to follow any clear principle or any logic.\n\nIt is also argued that drugs consumption constitute a “public risk”. The argument against this affirmation is the same as the previous. I would add that there do exist mechanisms less intrusive for individual freedom that would solve the “public risk” problem, like the harshening of the penalties to discourage reckless behavior, or addiction clauses in the insurance contracts that would make much more costly for the assured to be involved in any accident under the influence of drugs. \n\nThere is an argument less used against legalization that requires some attention too. It is that drugs can produce useless individuals, leaving idle resources in the economy. This could be true for the most extreme cases of addiction, like in nowadays higher levels of alcoholism. But this problem would have an easy solution using contracts between companies and employees that forbid the latter to consume drugs, like what happens with doping in professional athletes. Also, even admitting this as a general problem, government has no moral authority to force anyone to be productive instead of addicted.\n\nBut drugs legalization has some positive aspects too, most of the time difficult to see because of the disinformation culture currently existent. The clearest and most general argument for drugs legalization is individual freedom and self-property. Every individual should be free and responsible for doing whatever they want with his body, including consuming drugs. This covers also assuming responsibly the consequences that this could carry for themselves and the compensation of the ones that it carries for others.  \n\nOther argument for legalization is the vague definition of drug or, better said, the thin line that separates what is legal from what is not. As I commented before, drugs don’t seem to be legalized according to their addiction or their harming potential. And social acceptance is not a good measure, because any drug becomes socially accepted when it has been legalized for enough time.\n\nWe shouldn’t forget that drugs also have some positive effects that the poor education about them insist to hide. One of the most widely accepted drug applications nowadays is the pain and agony treatment for terminal patients, who have access to cannabis and even LSD in some countries. Even so, both substances are fully or almost fully prohibited in the majority of countries, so a great number of persons are deprived from their therapeutic use, recommended or not by a specialist. \n\nOther possitive effect of drugs that seems to have no weight in government decisions is the creative empowerment, both scientific and artistic. There are plenty of big names of arts and science that used drugs as an inspiration source. There are drugs that stimulate self-exploration and self-knowledge, activities very useful for anyone. \n\nAmong those big names who consumed drugs because of their positive effects we find great geniuses like Friedrich Nietzsche, Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Sigmund Freud or Thomas Edison, whose achievements are well known and others less known like the astrophysicist Carl Sagan, the discoverer of the double-helix DNA structure Francis Crick, or the writer Ken Kesey, to mention some examples. \n\nAt last, there is a positive a much criticized application of drugs: entertainment. Drug effects are very diverse, and most of them can be profitable with no other reason than having a good time. There isn’t any good solid argument against this kind of entertainment that doesn’t violate individual freedom.   \n\nThere is also a positive effect of legalization that admits little discussion: violence reduction. In an environment where drugs were considered one of many substances, the power of drug lords would disappear and with it all the violence they use to maintain their position. A war is always a war, and the drug war is not less. Each year lots of lives are lost in this war and a massive amount of people is kept captive of a system inevitably violent because disputes can’t be solved by justice or other pacific means. \n\nLegalization would transfer the highly concentrated power of drug lords to small producers and dealers, who wouldn’t be afraid of the violent means of their superiors if they don’t reach their goals, but of the deception of their clients and of the decisions of courts, putting drug industry in the same situation as any other industry in conflict terms. Also, the end of violence would mean less “public risk”, acting as an argument against that affirmation.\n\nEconomic growth is a great argument for legalization too. Drug industry is a terribly inefficient one since prohibition prevents real supply and demand from matching. Once drugs were legalized, they would experiment an increase in quality and a decrease in price, as producers and dealers wouldn’t have to suffer the costs of hiding their activity from authorities and the costs of legal sanctions. This price decrease would imply that criminality associated to drug consumption would decrease too, as those who commit crimes to obtain the resources necessary to buy them would need less resources, even reaching a point where they could obtain them in a legal way.\n\nAlso, the quality increase would reduce the number of involuntary overdoses coming from the adulteration that drugs suffer now a day, against which consumers have little ways of fighting. All this would mean a reduction of the health problems caused by drugs. \n\nMixing some of the above arguments, drugs could be also used as a mean of self-destruction using any means they want. Drugs can kill if used in enough quantity, so they could be a method, probably much nicer, to suicide or to commit euthanasia. \n\nA last reason to legalize drugs is the possibility for the government to earn some tax revenue. This is a possibility that libertarians wouldn’t look favorably, but it shouldn’t be forgotten as a useful argument against prohibition. \n\nNowadays it seems to exist a slow tendency towards legalization, especially with cannabis, but there’s still a long way to go. Some of the most advanced countries are Netherlands, where selling under strict conditions and comsuming are legal; some states in USA, where selling and consuming are legal; or Czech Republic, where possession of certain quantities of heroin and cannabis is legal. \n\nDespite some advances, the way to a free drugs market is still long and harsh, seeming to be more an educational issue than a wellness one. Citizens themselves should decide which substances they want to consume after acquiring sufficient knowledge, not leaving the government, through violence and disinformation, to decide what we can and what we can’t consume.",
