| body | That mix of anxiety and optimism is something many of us can relate to. And that moment when the doctor reassured you – it's like a small ray of light in the darkness of uncertainty. But here's the thing about mental health journeys: they're not linear. Sometimes, even with the best intentions, we might find ourselves doubting our own struggles. That's where terms like egosyntonic and egodystonic behaviors come into play, reminding us that it's okay to feel conflicted about our emotions. I checked out the link https://restore-mentalhealth.com/egosyntonic-egodyntonic/ about egosyntonic and egodystonic behaviors, and it's insightful. It helped me understand that internal tug-of-war we often face when dealing with mental health issues. |

| body | It takes courage to open up about mental health struggles, so kudos to you for taking that step. Your journey resonates with me because I've been through something similar. It's amazing how a casual conversation with someone who understands can lead us to seek help. I remember my first visit to the therapist vividly, much like your experience. It's both nerve-wracking and hopeful, isn't it? |

| title | An 'Empirical' Method of Divination, Zi Wei Dou Shu |
| body | I recently discovered Zi Wei Dou Shu, the literal translation: the "Purple Star Constellation Calculation" method or marginally more common known names are the Purple Star astrology, the Empyrean Matrix. As is common to many who feel they have discovered a great secret, I felt the need to share with anyone who cared enough to listen (or read), hence this post. The purple star alluded to is the Emperor star, the North star, Pole star, Polaris, of the Big Dipper constellation. And as I discovered, this method was originally formed by a Taoist some 1400 years ago during the times of the ancient Chinese Tang Dynasty, around 618 AD. It was used exclusively by imperial astronomers to create incredibly detailed readings for the Emperor of China and him only, which kind of makes sense given that his destiny can be said to be tied to the destiny of a nation. Astrologers had noticed that amongst the countless stars, there was only one that was seemingly stationary and was the brightest, with other stars revolving around it and hence named this celestial equivalent the 'Emperor' star. The method was later adapted during the Ming dynasty some 1000 years later to its present day form. And yes, yes, I'm in no position to say that its an 'empirical' method, I'm just playing on the two words of 'Empirical' and 'Emperor'. What led me to dive a bit deeper into it - apart having some time to invest in myself as a result of my recent diagnosis, was my piqued curiosity. I wanted to know what was so special about it that it could only be used by one man and subsequently spent many (many, many, MANY) hours searching for articles and reference materials in English. Being a 3rd generation Chinese born abroad, I'm illiterate in my 'native' tongue and am now very grateful for google translate ... I found that there's a total of about 10 books written in English on this topic - world-wide, I know because I spent many hours scouring online for them - oh, and only about 3 of them are any good by the way, again - this is said with many hours of research and reading behind it. I believe I read somewhere that this method had become somewhat a lost art, only recently having been revived (recent being the 1980's) amongst the Chinese community that uses Chinese and even more recently (in the 2000's) that some materials were made available in English. You can understand why, I mean, even in its present day you find original text that stems from 1400 years ago when the language was even more poetic, subtle and nuanced - four words could equal a whole sentence and said sentence tells a whole story, evokes and provokes imagery to story. Did I mention my gratitude to google translate? and to other Chinese to English websites too, that helped translate many of these ancient adages and quotes for me. Well, having notched up a goodly tranche of deep reading and cross-referencing hours into studying this, I can indeed say it is a ridiculously intricate method. I'll try to describe the complexity in brief (a juxtaposed attempt yes): it uses not only an individuals date of birth but also the hour and minutes they were born, creating around 520,000 possible blueprints, or base templates of different 'types' of lives. Other notable but far from exhaustive highlights are: - the calculation of the interactions between 108 stars, or 'energies' that each star represents, - each star having their own characteristics, personalities - both positives and negatives and their level of brightness determines whether positive or negative traits are brought forth, - the stars interactions play out in the particular aspect of an individuals life, - the stars interacting with the 'palace' or aspect of the individuals life the stars are sitting in - be it parents, siblings, partner, career, travel etc, ... I won't go to the next level of detail where all of the above each having an element of yin (female) or yang (male) and earth, fire, metal, water, wood attached to it and how this plays out .... Like other astrology methods, you can read from the charts an individuals personality but I like that in this method, the characteristics are more detailed and specific, you can also see the broad inclinations and direction of ones life or 'destiny' ('destiny' is perhaps the wrong word as nothing is set in stone, just what you're likely to be inclined to do). You can also see the overarching 'luck' or (mix of positive vs negative energies, as well as likely lack or abundance in opportunities or 'luck') governing a particular decade to ones life, as well dive into a particular year, or even a particular month or day if you so fancied it... Naturally, having invested so many hours of researching this, I wasn't going to let the fruits of my learning journey go to waste and spent even more time in drafting up charts as well as readings for myself. I feel the verdict is that I'm a mixed bag, that's not the technical term by the way just my own personal nomenclature. I can say with relief that I'm not destined for great power, wealth and an out-of-this world love partner who'll sweep me off my feet to ride off into the sunset with. The relief comes from the fact that the readings would have just been too vague, too superficially sugar-coated with artificial e-numbers to have been believable. No, I've a size-able chunk of adversity scattered across my life 'destiny', in some decades, and in specific years too. The specificity I found in the aspects and time periods which I dived into the detail of was, well ... accurate. So ... hurrah for the discovery of useful hidden secrets? yes from me. I like being able to see the big picture, see the measure of accuracy and to take advantage of any positives or opportunities and avoid or turn around negatives or aspects which are lacking. My next step obviously to put this knowledge to good use, refine and hone - that, and to find and connect with others who are interested so I've a buddy or a mentor to study with - looking for 'luck' on this next phase of the journey ... |

| title | Just Words |
| body | During the hour with my therapist last week we talked about the power negative thinking, the relationship and equation of thoughts triggering feelings which then trigger physical reactions. She explained that she wanted to teach me the method of tackling them - awareness of the negative thinking, challenging the thinking and finally, working to form a new perspective. Somewhere in the conversation she said something along the lines of "because that's all thoughts are, just words, they're not always fact, just words." I don't doubt the eventual efficacy of what she has taught me but those two words of 'just words' has stayed with me. Just words. Indeed, you could say the world we live in is made of 'just words'. You can exchange words for currency, like we do here on Steemit, the content here are just words or include words in one way or another. And using more words, you can go on to exchange the currency for something else and then something else, another link in the endless exchange cycle. You can take over a country with words, look at our politicians and heads of state. With words, you can create the most touching piece of music, literature, cinema, play, art or otherwise that can inspire the change of direction in the life of another. With words, a government can license logging companies to destroy the habitat for thousands of lives - human, animal and insect who have made the rainforest their home for thousands of years. With the word "war", countless lives can be devastated and brought to an end - think about it, as you go through your day to day what are the normal, mundane animate and inanimate things that make up your life and have that taken away from you, 'you' as an individual is not even remotely part of the equation, 'you' are just part of a population, a faceless part of a nation, one-in-however-many-millions. With words, scientists communicate and absorb the research of others to develop the cure for cancer or the next iteration in chemical warfare. With the words "it's not you, it's me" you can bring relief or careless heartbreak to another. Words can make or destroy a career, a relationship, a life. With words you can take someone to cloud 9, bringing to them an electrifying tingle from the roots of the hairs on their head and all the way down their spine in pure joy. With words you can offer a salve to the soul and bring someone back from the brink when they're submerged in grief or despair. With words, you can stand up on stage and amplify your words through a microphone, pouring inspiration and physically make a change in the thoughts and minds of some, if not all of the audience. For good or for bad. Words can frighten, harass, intimidate and destroy. Words can soothe, inspire, embolden and create. Words have power that we often overlook, take for granted or are careless with, all words, even 'just words'. |

"body": "\n\nDuring the hour with my therapist last week we talked about the power negative thinking, the relationship and equation of thoughts triggering feelings which then trigger physical reactions. She explained that she wanted to teach me the method of tackling them - awareness of the negative thinking, challenging the thinking and finally, working to form a new perspective. Somewhere in the conversation she said something along the lines of \"because that's all thoughts are, just words, they're not always fact, just words.\"\n\nI don't doubt the eventual efficacy of what she has taught me but those two words of 'just words' has stayed with me. \n\nJust words. \n\nIndeed, you could say the world we live in is made of 'just words'. \n\nYou can exchange words for currency, like we do here on Steemit, the content here are just words or include words in one way or another. And using more words, you can go on to exchange the currency for something else and then something else, another link in the endless exchange cycle. \n\nYou can take over a country with words, look at our politicians and heads of state.\n\nWith words, you can create the most touching piece of music, literature, cinema, play, art or otherwise that can inspire the change of direction in the life of another.\n\nWith words, a government can license logging companies to destroy the habitat for thousands of lives - human, animal and insect who have made the rainforest their home for thousands of years. \n\nWith the word \"war\", countless lives can be devastated and brought to an end - think about it, as you go through your day to day what are the normal, mundane animate and inanimate things that make up your life and have that taken away from you, 'you' as an individual is not even remotely part of the equation, 'you' are just part of a population, a faceless part of a nation, one-in-however-many-millions. \n\nWith words, scientists communicate and absorb the research of others to develop the cure for cancer or the next iteration in chemical warfare. \n\nWith the words \"it's not you, it's me\" you can bring relief or careless heartbreak to another. \n\nWords can make or destroy a career, a relationship, a life. \n\nWith words you can take someone to cloud 9, bringing to them an electrifying tingle from the roots of the hairs on their head and all the way down their spine in pure joy. \n\nWith words you can offer a salve to the soul and bring someone back from the brink when they're submerged in grief or despair. \n\nWith words, you can stand up on stage and amplify your words through a microphone, pouring inspiration and physically make a change in the thoughts and minds of some, if not all of the audience. For good or for bad. \n\nWords can frighten, harass, intimidate and destroy.\n\nWords can soothe, inspire, embolden and create. \n\nWords have power that we often overlook, take for granted or are careless with, all words, even 'just words'.",

| title | Anxiety and Depression - First steps towards the ladder |
| body | So what really pushed me into the discovery of my new 'pets' of Anxiety Disorder and Depression? they who have transformed my life and opened up a new chapter. Eventually, around last November and on a rare occasion where I was in the office for a few hours, I happened to bump into a colleague, a friend who I knew had dealt with his own mental health issues before. We had a chat to catch up, stopping by the water cooler, he had asked me the usual 'what I was getting up to?, how was work? etc' questions. I talked about work and then it occurred to me to talk a little bit about the stress and panic attacks, whether he had any good recommendations. He said that I look at talking to a therapist for a few sessions, get some advice on managing stress, the best thing to do was to head to the doctors for a referral. This sounded like a great idea, get some stress management advice and I'd be better. I remember it being a Friday when I called to get the doctors appointment, luckily, or so I thought, I was able to get an appointment for Saturday with a locum doctor, it was at a clinic slightly further away, 10 minute train journey and a 5 minute walk. I recall feeling anxious, hoping that I'd make it there without a panic attack. In the end, I called an Uber for the 7 minute car journey. I walked into the clinic, sat on the brightly coloured plastic bucket chairs common to white walled waiting receptions and waited till I was called. Eventually I was called and explained to the doctor why I was there. She was sympathetic and provided the needed referral letter and as the 10 minute appointment wrapped up, she turned in her chair to give me her full attention, looking at me to make sure she had mine and said "you know you're going to be ok don't you?, you'll get through this." Even as she said those words to me, part of me was a bit embarrassed at being the point of attention and a small cynical voice inside me said "yes of course I'm fine." I phoned the health insurers on Monday, luckily I have a health insurance policy that covered mental health care, though I was not so lucky in getting them to accept the referral, apparently I needed a referral from my own doctor before they could approve the care I needed. Mildly impatient and frustrated with the technicalities, I phoned my clinic again and eventually managed to get a last minute doctors appointment, only for it to be cancelled and after much to-ing and fro-ing on the phone, I was promised a phone call. The doctor called me back whilst I was in the shower. I remember standing in the bathroom, dripping wet and subsequent shivers getting through to my voice as I explained what I needed a referral from her. She said that she understood and that it also sounded like I might have depression and would add that to the referral. So finally I was only my way to getting help, the health insurers gave me a few names for recommended psychiatrists, I googled each of them and opted for the one with the best reviews. It felt a bit strange that I would do that, I'm from the generation that was growing up as the world wide web was launched to the world, the way you made a phone call was to use a corded phone and dialled each number by turning the rotary dial to each number you wanted. As luck would have it, I would see the psychiatrist the next day, I took it as a sign of luck that the psychiatrist happened to have an appointment free the very next day and perhaps this would all be over before Christmas. The clinic where I had my first appointment is in the well-to-do part of town, classical music radio station on, high end hot drinks machine and comfortable leather sofas, conservative art on the walls. I felt fortunate that my insurance policy covered me for care in a fancy clinic. Travelling there meant battling a 35 minute journey, though knowing that help was at the end of the journey made the climbing and easing waves of anxiety easier to endure. My next memory is of the appointment with the psychiatrist. His manner was friendly and reassuring, and seemed to really be listening. Having never sought any kind of mental healthcare before, I wasn't sure how much I was supposed to be sharing but I guess at the time, I was like a pot on the verge overspilling. With every question he asked, ranging from my childhood to relationships to life at present, the words just flowed out as water would when you turn on a tap. It felt strange to disclose such intimate details and emotions to a total stranger but it was as if the words had been there all along, just waiting for an outlet. At the end of the hour, he recommended seeing me again as soon as possible to finish covering off his questions that would enable him to make a diagnosis. He also prescribed me some Diazepam to be used if I really needed them between now and the next appointment. I remember feeling quite mentally raw, as if I'd lifted the scabs off a multitude of half-healed mental wounds. My mind churned with memories of all that I'd talked about as well as slight reeling sense of unease, though there was also a cathartic feeling in and amongst everything else I was feeling. I reasoned that maybe that was what I needed, someone to spill all the remnants and ghosts of the past to, things that would haunt me fleeting snippets of memories to. "Of course, I wouldn't need the Diazepam." By the next appointment, it felt like I was a bit more stable on my axis and no longer feeling like I was on the verge of overspilling. Still, the second appointment would take most of the hour with the remaining questions the psychiatrist had for me. When we were finally done, I waited for the the psychiatrist to review his notes and deliver his verdict. He would go on to say that his diagnosis was that I had Generalised Anxiety Disorder and Depression, that the illnesses were linked, a core part of the disorder came from the need to be in control. I would catch some of the other details; such as disorders name was unfortunate as was kind of vague as well as playing down the impact it had on the sufferers lives, that it affected around 20% of the citiy's population and that the disorder usually stems from having to grow up too quickly when you were a child, needing to assume responsibility from a young age. He prescribed a initial course of lower dosed antidepressants as my heart began to race and my mind reeled. I was silently floored at the revelation and there was a part of me internally grasping for reasoning, thinking that perhaps it wasn't that serious, that the pills were to steady the panic attacks - nothing more. |

"body": "\n\nSo what really pushed me into the discovery of my new 'pets' of Anxiety Disorder and Depression? they who have transformed my life and opened up a new chapter.\n\nEventually, around last November and on a rare occasion where I was in the office for a few hours, I happened to bump into a colleague, a friend who I knew had dealt with his own mental health issues before. We had a chat to catch up, stopping by the water cooler, he had asked me the usual 'what I was getting up to?, how was work? etc' questions. I talked about work and then it occurred to me to talk a little bit about the stress and panic attacks, whether he had any good recommendations. He said that I look at talking to a therapist for a few sessions, get some advice on managing stress, the best thing to do was to head to the doctors for a referral.\n\nThis sounded like a great idea, get some stress management advice and I'd be better. She was sympathetic and provided the needed referral letter and as the 10 minute appointment wrapped up, she turned in her chair to give me her full attention, looking at me to make sure she had mine and said \"you know you're going to be ok don't you?, you'll get through this.\" Even as she said those words to me, part of me was a bit embarrassed at being the point of attention and a small cynical voice inside me said \"yes of course I'm fine.\" \n\nI phoned the health insurers on Monday, luckily I have a health insurance policy that covered mental health care, though I was not so lucky in getting them to accept the referral, apparently I needed a referral from my own doctor before they could approve the care I needed. \n\nSo finally I was only my way to getting help, the health insurers gave me a few names for recommended psychiatrists, I googled each of them and opted for the one with the best reviews.
