titleETSY: Number 1 Secret to Guarantee Steady Income (Part 1)
body

Had to temporarily close my Etsy store (Way too many orders)

I'm a silversmith. I make wedding bands. My rings sell for $100 or $200 each. Last week, with 50+ order on my clipboard I just hand to put the store in vacation mode. https://www.etsy.com/shop/PaulZozem

So far, I've helped quite a few people get started on Etsy. Jeff said to me, "I'm on Etsy, but I never get any orders."

I told him, well... you just don't know how to push your items to the top of the Search Engine. It's pretty simply. Just renew your most popular items ever day. Sure, each 20 cent post will last for 90 days, BUT if you renew a for sale item every day... THEN it is pushed to the top of the Etsy Search engine and you'll make sales. It didn't take long. Soon he was selling over 3k a month.

Another friend of mine, Mike, never made a ring in his life. It took me a whole month to get him up and running, but he sold over 100k his first year. The thing is, you do need to have some basic computer skills. You've got to be able to take good pictures and write well enough to include an engaging description.

But here's the number one secret that guarantees success...

Here's how I got Mike to hit the ground running, making good sales right off the bat.

It's all in the research. Before you even decide what to sell you need to do some very serious research. An hour a day, for a week or two, should do the trick. As you browse through the Etsy site, you've going to see a lot of things you yourself could make. Good. That's a start. BUT... don't bother unless you know there is a BIG demand for those items. That's where most people fail. The go to all the trouble of making something and setting up a shop, only to find there is no demand.

On the other hand, if you take the time to find where the demand is and make those items, you are almost assured success. Here's how it works. The most amazing thing about Etsy is they openly list all sales for each vendor. For instance you can see on my site, I've made 1927 sales. https://www.etsy.com/shop/PaulZozem

Here's the secret: Real numbers on where all the money is being spent.

With that Sales figure the top of each Sellers store, you know exactly how many sales they making. You just need to visit that store once a week, and keep a log. It's not that difficult. It doesn't take that much time. It's just about being smart. Find something that you could do. Then using the Sales numbers, prominently posted at the top of every store, figure out where the demand is. Looking at all the items in any one store, come up with an average price. Multiple that by the number of sales per week, and you'll know almost exactly what they earning and what you can expect to earn.

Once you find someone who is making lots of sales every week, simply model your store after theirs. Don't worry that you'll be copying their designs. Whatever your craft is, your designs will always be some variation of your own vision and skills. Though, you should be confident that you could offer similar items for less or better items for more.

SO... IF YOU CAN FIND someone who is making lots of sales every day... and every week... AND you could do something similar, you are almost guaranteed to also make LOTS of sales every day, right off the bat. That is... IF YOU RENEW your items every day. That's all there is to it. At 20 cents a pop, for each renewal, you're looking at maybe $1 a day in advertising costs. In which case, you should see results within a week.

If there's any interest in this strategy, I can post further instructions on how to use Etsy's Favorites and Chrome Extensions to VERY easily track who's making the most money.

If there's any interest in this strategy, I can post further instructions on how to use Etsy's Favorites and Chrome Extensions to VERY easily track who's making the most money.

titleWhy Local Cooperative Galleries Never Go Out of Business
body

"In a way, it's the perfect business model: a business that never dies."

Here on the Kitsap Peninsular, in Washington state, there are lots of little tourist towns, all filled with art galleries. And each, has at least one cooperative gallery. To a casual shopper these cooperatives look and act like any gallery. But rather than being owned by a single individual, a group of 20 to 30 artists share the space, and all the responsibilities of daily operations.

In fact my wife has been a member of one of these galleries for the past 15 years. Our town has two of these cooperative galleries. The oldest is 26 years old! Other galleries owned by individuals come and go all the time, but these cooperative galleries never EVER go out of business. Why is that?

You see, individual artists may come and go, but the store itself always has new artists waiting to take the place of those who couldn't make it. This makes them completely adaptable to up and down economies and changing trends.

In a way, it's the perfect business model: a business that never dies.

So I ask you, could this model be applied to other services?

titleNew Business Model: Teacher's Co-op Now Forming Near You (elevator pitch)
body

THE BUSINESS MODEL

First, why any local Teacher's Co-op, once formed, will never go out of business.

So I ask myself could this model be applied to other services?

A TEACHERS CO-OP

The Teachers Co-op is a completely new concept. It would be very similar to a cooperative art gallery, in that costs are shared by a group of owners. But in this case by 20 to 30 teachers instead of 20 to 30 artists. Instead of offering works of art to the public, a Teachers Co-op would offer two or three hour classes for as little as $5 per session. Where else can one go to sip a cup of coffee and attend a class for as little as $5? Depending on the presenter, this can be educational, or for entertainment. Either way, sitting in front of a big screen 70" HD TV, with friends and other like minded individuals, is a fun way to spend some time. Everything that happens on the teachers laptop computer appears on the big screen. THAT'S THE BIG DRAW.

Teachers routinely teach one or two classes a week. And unlike traditional classes that require registration, here the class fee is collected at the door. Either by a greeter, or just a drop box for the required class fee. In this way, it's more like a movie theater. Classes, teachers, and schedules are posted online and emailed to students.

TEACHER RECRUITMENT

Teachers don't need to be accredited or certified. They only need to be knowledgeable or passionate about the subject they are presenting. There's no subject that can't be enhanced by bringing up Internet links and videos on a big screen TV. Whether that be gardening, parenting, or a hands-on walk though, with latest software.

The list goes on and on. And that's without even mentioning entertainment venues. Run a short video, start a discussion. The teacher could end up just being a moderator. Of course, particular care does need to be taken not to break any copyright laws. And each local co-op would need to develop policies pertaining to acceptable subjects.

COFFEE, TEA & MORE

Why does Meetup work so well? People are always hungry to get out and socialize with like minded individuals. These Teachers Co-ops are basically aimed at the same audience, only they're locally owned and operated businesses.

If there is enough local involvement, in addition to classes: coffee, tea and snacks could be offered, making the Teachers Co-op experience much more like a pay-per-class-cafe. Friends or volunteers could be recruited to monitor the door and the snack bar.

THEN, there is always the possibility that a teacher, (who is basically a part owner), does not actually teach, but rather coordinates guest teachers and entertainers, splitting or sharing the profits.

STARTUP COSTS

Just some quick napkin figures here. Figure 2k monthly rent for the storefront, first and last = 4k. 1k for a BIG screen HD TV. Tables and benches, counter tops, and a display case for the snacks, add another 2k. That's an approximately 7k total. Make it 8k, which includes a router and a wireless USB connector so anyone's laptop screen can be ported to the big screen. That's what it would take to start a new Teacher's Co-op.

So 10k split up evenly by 25 teachers figures to be a one time $400 investment, by each teacher. Ordinarily sole-proprietor shops spend many times more setting up, which always includes expensive inventory, and often payroll.

Here, teachers are responsible for all operations during their class or shift. Volunteers are recruited as needed. No payroll required.

Once proven, these Teachers Co-op's could be popping up all over. This could be the new happening place for all nerds and want-to-be intellectuals. Like a club, but only for smart people.

PROFITABILITY

Figure 3k a month for storefront or office rent and expenses. Continuing our 25 teacher scenario, this would mean each teacher would need to either pay a $120 a month fee or forfeit the first $120 a month of the class fees they earn. Thus, if you as a teacher were teaching 2 classes a week, for a total of 8 classes a month, each class would have to generate a minimum of $15 per class, for you to break even.

ALSO, considering the Teacher's position, $120 a month is not that much of a commitment. Instead of offering works of art to the public, a Teachers Co-op would offer two or three hour classes for as little as $5 per session. titleLocal Teacher's Co-ops Now Forming Near You (1200 word elevator pitch)
body

THE BUSINESS MODEL

First, why any local Teacher's Co-op, once formed, will never go out of business.

Then go ahead and add another 2k for other incidentals for a grand total of 10k. That's what it would take to start a new Teacher's Co-op.

So 10k split up evenly by 25 teachers figures to be a one time $400 investment, by each teacher. A small sum, considering you'd be a founding-teacher of such a prestigious local business.

And if my wife's gallery is any example; there are many artists who just pay their monthly rent for the prestige and social aspect, without ever making any sales. In the context of the Teacher's Co-op, this opens up the possibility of free classes.

Of course there are many other considerations, but I think they'll best be decided by the group. For instance...

Class scheduling: most teachers will want the evening and weekend slots; how to to make the afternoon slots just as desirable. How storefront rents and costs are shared: whether monthly rent is enough, or also a percentage of class fees would be required. How new teachers are selected and rated: replacing unpopular teachers compassionately and democratically. And what options are available for a teacher to sell their founding-seat, potentially seeing a return on their initial $400 investment.

OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE

While such an enterprise could be started and run with nothing more than paper forms, having a single software application that would be used to run the entire cooperative would be ideal. This would need to post class schedules on the web, send emails to regular students, and most importantly incorporate full accounting capabilities for collecting class fees from teachers and paying bills.

Once a few of these Teacher's Co-ops are underway, we should consider running a Kickstarter Campaign to underwrite the cost of software development. But... I think the concept is still completely viable even without the software.

bodyThanks for your reply!! Actually I was thinking this would be more for adults. And yes, 30 teachers might be a bit much. Weekends and evenings would be the most popular shifts. Mornings and afternoon shifts would be hardest to fill. (For both the teachers and their audience.) Maybe students is not the best word. Picture a teacher using their own personal laptop, where everything they do is displayed on 70 inch TV monitor, in a room large enough to hold 30 or 40 people. And rather than seats like a theater, they'd be sitting at desks or tables, more like a restaurant or classroom. BUT back to your angle about aiming this at mom's. From what I understand there IS a need for some kind of charter school management software. Though... I was thinking something more along the lines of club atmosphere... for adults. Something that could be started without software. Then, once a number of these got going, together an open source project could be funded to further the concept. And this would encourage even more of these local coops to form. (Just brainstorming here.) As with any enterprise, the goal is to create value. Here the idea is a simple self-directed school that could offer inexpensive classes, (which are really not available anywhere at this point.) Where teachers would get to set keep most of the fees. Maybe instead of a "teacher" filling a weekly time slot, a coordinator could be responsible for bringing in guest teachers and or speakers. Going to the theater is just darn expensive for most people. A small theater like this, with a big screen, could fill many local community needs. Again, I appreciate the feedback. I'll post a full elevator pitch in a day or two.

"body": "Thanks for your reply!! Actually I was thinking this would be more for adults. And yes, 30 teachers might be a bit much. Weekends and evenings would be the most popular shifts. Mornings and afternoon shifts would be hardest to fill. (For both the teachers and their audience.) Maybe students is not the best word.\n\nPicture a teacher using their own personal laptop, where everything they do is displayed on 70 inch TV monitor, in a room large enough to hold 30 or 40 people. And rather than seats like a theater, they'd be sitting at desks or tables, more like a restaurant or classroom.\n\nBUT back to your angle about aiming this at mom's. From what I understand there IS a need for some kind of charter school management software. Though... I was thinking something more along the lines of club atmosphere... for adults. Something that could be started without software. Then, once a number of these got going, together an open source project could be funded to further the concept. And this would encourage even more of these local coops to form. (Just brainstorming here.)\n\nAs with any enterprise, the goal is to create value. Here the idea is a simple self-directed school that could offer inexpensive classes, (which are really not available anywhere at this point.) Where teachers would get to set keep most of the fees. Maybe instead of a \"teacher\" filling a weekly time slot, a coordinator could be responsible for bringing in guest teachers and or speakers.\n\nGoing to the theater is just darn expensive for most people. A small theater like this, with a big screen, could fill many local community needs. Again, I appreciate the feedback.\n\nI'll post a full elevator pitch in a day or two.",

bodyI actually really like this idea, as I am not a huge fan of state schooling. However I think your best bet would to be to find 2-5 moms who already have children who want the same things and start there. You're going to have a tough time finding 30 teachers and scheduling all of them and that seems like a lot of kids would be needed. Keeping it small to start with means you could probably make it more like a day care setting in that you don't rent a big building which costs a bunch of $$$ a month. Instead have one or two teacher per 10 kids (5 moms (teachers) with 2 kids each) a day, so it would be more personal and they could switch off doing it at their homes. My wife and I are expecting our first child in February and have talked with some good close friends who are also expecting and schooling is always a hot topic. I'll keep up on this to see where it takes you :)

titleNew Concept: Local Teachers Co-op Forming Near You (hypothetical)
body

I was thinking of placing this as an ad on CraigsList to see if there was any interest in this concept. Anyone doing anything like this? I've got an elevator pitch too which goes into a LOT more detail. It's kind of like the marriage of Meetup and Udemy. Comments? Suggestions? All feedback appreciated.

Local TEACHERS CO-OP Now Forming NEAR YOU. 30 Teachers will be renting an office or storefront together. EARN $20+ hr to share your knowledge and passion. No teaching credentials needed. BIG SCREEN HD TV. Relaxed SOCIAL atmosphere for students and teachers. Costco snacks & coffee for you and your students. Play YouTube videos or teach software from YOUR LAPTOP, which shows up on the Big Screen to the entire room. Build a local following. You set your own admission fees. Sounds like fun! Reply with post or join our ONLINE development group. NO START-UP COST until space is rented. Then one time by in: aprox: $400 per teacher.
