titleEleven Observations on the Capitol Protest
bodyhttps://i2.wp.com/www.zerothposition.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/800px-2021_storming_of_the_United_States_Capitol_09_cropped.jpg?w=800&ssl=1 On January 6, 2021, the United States Congress held its quadrennial joint session to count the votes of the Electoral College and certify the 2020 presidential election results. Many thousands of supporters of incumbent President Donald Trump gathered in Washington, D.C. beginning on the previous day to protest the election results and advocate for Vice President Mike Pence to use his power of reading the electoral votes to side with Republican electors in states which had anomalies in their popular vote results. At a rally on the Ellipse on the morning of January 6, Trump and others addressed the crowd. Trump encouraged his supporters to “fight like hell” to “take back our country” and to march towards the Capitol, while his lawyer and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani called for “trial by combat”.[1] The crowd marched to the Capitol, made their way past police lines, and entered the building during the Electoral College vote count, forcing the postponement of the proceedings for several hours.[2] Capitol security evacuated the House and Senate chambers. Several buildings in the Capitol complex were also evacuated and locked down. Protesters managed to enter the Capitol rotunda, the Senate chamber, and the offices of several members of Congress. Guards prevented entry to the House floor, killing a woman in the process.[3,4] Four others died during the events of the day. Improvised explosive devices were found in several places, but none detonated. Eleven observations follow on these events and the likely path forward. 1. Blame placement for the violence should be widespread, but will not be. Ever since the election on November 3, 2020, there have been legitimate questions about the procedures, conduct, and results. But rather than attempt to answer those questions, the lügenpresse and Big Tech have dismissed such questions and gone out of their way to ridicule and silence anyone who persists in asking. The courts have mostly punted, whether out of mistaken legal doctrines, loyalty to the Cathedral, or sheer cowardice. Those who sought to petition the government for a redress of grievances were told in no uncertain terms to sit down and shut up. Some did, but of course others would not. Had a fair hearing been granted at any level, few would have felt a need to resort to force. Of course, the Cathedral is pathologically incapable of self-reflection, and would never consider truly holding itself accountable. Predictably, all blame was placed squarely on Trump. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) called on Pence to invoke the Twenty-Fifth Amendment and threatened to impeach Trump for a second time.[5] Many sources described the event as a coup d'état, though its effects were far from actually displacing the US Government in favor of another authority, Trump or otherwise. Multiple Trump administration officials resigned in response, and mainstream social media companies permanently suspended Trump's accounts.[6] Only dissidents and a scant few at the edge of the establishment press dared to suggest any other fault. 2. Power belongs to those who take it, and does not belong to those who fail to take it or choose not to take it. These truths were demonstrated along multiple avenues in the events surrounding the storming. First, there are significant legal arguments to be made that Pence did in fact have the power to hand Trump a second term.[7–10] Namely, the Constitution vests the power to perform the vote count in the President of the Senate, who is the sitting Vice President. Part of this power is to decide which slates of electors are valid and which are invalid, if more than one slate is submitted from the same state. Had Pence interpreted the Twelfth Amendment in this manner and used his power accordingly, there is a strong possibility that Trump would have prevailed, though martial law may have been needed in many cities for several weeks to stop leftist riots. Second, Trump could have used the Insurrection Act and the Militia Act to “cross the Rubicon,” the phrase which has emerged from the Dissident Right for dispensing with the current system and taking power by force. As Alexander Macris explains[11], these Acts provide the means for a President to call forth the armed forces and the militia while sidestepping the Posse Comitatus Act, the War Powers Act, and every other usual restriction on a President's use of force. He instead chose to “march up to the Rubicon, then sit down to fish,” as Ernst von Salomon would say. He did not even accompany the supporters he had called forth, leaving them to their own devices and, more importantly, their own consequences, including federal charges of insurrection, rioting, and seditious conspiracy.[12] Third, those who occupied the Capitol could have accomplished far more than they did, if there were actually some kind of realistic plan to do more than simply protest or disrupt. But as Curtis Yarvin explains,
“Since they were only fishing in the Rubicon, not making any kind of practical plan to actually cross it, if they accidentally do cross it—they are lost. They will just wander around in the endless fields of Chianti, 'wondering why the level isn't ending,' until some Roman asswipe finds them and kills them with a spear.

They certainly will not 'declare a new government.' How? What government would that be? After Trump sets up his new basilica in the Rotunda, what is his next step? Even if the Supreme Court steals the election back for him—if he thought he was at war with Washington in his previous term, how about now?

And if he actually takes power by force, on the back of this mob—what exactly goes on in that Rotunda? What is his next step? What would he do tomorrow? Next week? Next month?”[13]
Fourth, the contest between Trump and Big Tech came to a head after the storming, with Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram deplatforming him. While Trump hinted at eliminating their Section 230 protection, which shields them from liability or accountability as they censor content and deplatform users however they see fit, no decisive action was ever taken and no serious attempt was made until it was too late. With Trump only days away from leaving office and appearing defeated and isolated, Big Tech made its move. With Trump only days away from leaving office and appearing defeated and isolated, Big Tech made its move.\n\nRead the entire article at ZerothPosition.com\n\nReferences\n
\n \t
“Before mob stormed US Capitol, Trump told them to 'fight like hell' –“. The Boston Globe. titleThe Not-So-Current Year: 2020 In Review
bodyhttps://i1.wp.com/www.zerothposition.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/fireworks.jpg?w=540&ssl=1 Though the specific demarcation of the passage from one year into another is a rather arbitrary social construct, it does provide a useful annual period for self-examination and remembrance. Now that 2020 has entered the history books, let us take a look back at a year's worth of essays and review the not-so-current year. We begin, of course, with last year's article of the same kind. Some articles in this list are sequels to articles in that list. Aside from that, we may move on. Benjamin Welton began the year by considering Chile's leftward lurch in the previous year, as well as the prospects for doing something about it. On Nov. 29, 2019, Quillette published an essay by Chang Che titled “The Case for Compulsory Voting” in which he argues that the right to vote is under attack and that making voting mandatory is the remedy for this and other problems. I wrote a thorough rebuttal to his case. I then went for an atypical second bite of the apple as an episode of “Agreeing With Statists For The Wrong Reasons,” the only one for the year. Book reviews have long been part of my intellectual output, and 2020 was no different. I read and reviewed Jonathan A. Rodden's Why Cities Lose. Several more books that I read in 2020 will be reviewed in 2021. On Mar. 3, 2020, there were 15 contests in the nomination process for President of the United States. Primary elections took place in Alabama, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, and Virginia, while caucuses took place in American Samoa. Collectively, this is known as Super Tuesday because more delegates are awarded on this date than on any other date in the nomination process. I wrote a list of observations on the presidential race up to that point. Also in March, Welton argued the case that American foreign policy in Afghanistan has been a disaster and will continue to be so unless a more traditional strategy of installing and backing a proper monarch is adopted. My glossary of social justice warrior terminology is the most popular article ever posted at Zeroth Position. After two years of continued craziness from radical leftists, I decided to revise and expand it to create a second edition in 2018. I did so again this year. This is likely to need continual updating, and two years is a proper amount of time between editions, so look for the fourth edition in 2022. Of course, the overarching theme of 2020 was the novel coronavirus, or the Wēnyì (Chinese: 瘟疫; plague, pestilence, epidemic, murrain), as we prefer to call it here at Zeroth Position. I wrote an essay addressing pandemic response from a libertarian reactionary perspective. Before this, my poetic side came out as I wrote song lyrics to the tune of Don't Fear the Reaper about the plague and the ineffective public health response. I welcomed Edward Maxwell III, the fifth additional writer at Zeroth Position, in August for a series called Colonize Your Bookshelf, the title of which is a jab at social justice warrior rhetoric about “decolonizing spaces.” Four parts were published in 2020, each of which summarizes and analyzes a book or essay that progressives would likely find distasteful and which is available or intended for future release through Maxwell's own Imperium Press. Part I contemplates Robert Filmer's Patriarcha, or the Natural Power of Kings. Part II discusses Joseph de Maistre's Essay on the Generative Principle of Political Constitutions. Part III covers Lothrop Stoddard's Into the Darkness: Nazi Germany Today. Part IV reviews Fustel de Coulanges' The Ancient City. The series is likely to continue next year. Nathan Dempsey submitted an essay which examines David D. Friedman's book The Machinery of Freedom through the lens of his own Liberty Minecraft project. On October 28, my pseudonymous Twitter account was permanently suspended. I wrote an essay reflecting upon that event. As of this writing, the Zeroth Position brand account is still active, but who knows for how long. Black Friday is revered by most libertarians as a celebration of free-market capitalism. I updated my explanation of why this reverence is misplaced. We bade Benjamin Welton farewell. We wish him the best in his future endeavors and hope for his return to our pages someday. Finally, the site itself made some important steps forward. We added an Affiliate page which displays products from the top vendors at WarriorPlus, each of which helps to pay for the operation of Zeroth Position whenever someone makes a purchase. We also changed our Friends page to an RSS feed of somewhat like-minded sites. All in all, it was an interesting year full of occasions to make sharp libertarian and reactionary arguments. May 2021 bring more and better. Happy New Year!

"body": "https://i1.wp.com/www.zerothposition.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/fireworks.jpg?w=540&ssl=1\nThough the specific demarcation of the passage from one year into another is a rather arbitrary social construct, it does provide a useful annual period for self-examination and remembrance. Now that 2020 has entered the history books, let us take a look back at a year's worth of essays and review the not-so-current year.\n\nWe begin, of course, with last year's article of the same kind. Some articles in this list are sequels to articles in that list. Aside from that, we may move on.\n\nBenjamin Welton began the year by considering Chile's leftward lurch in the previous year, as well as the prospects for doing something about it.\n\nOn Nov. 29, 2019, Quillette published an essay by Chang Che titled “The Case for Compulsory Voting” in which he argues that the right to vote is under attack and that making voting mandatory is the remedy for this and other problems. I wrote a thorough rebuttal to his case. I then went for an atypical second bite of the apple as an episode of “Agreeing With Statists For The Wrong Reasons,” the only one for the year.\n\nBook reviews have long been part of my intellectual output, and 2020 was no different. I read and reviewed Jonathan A. Rodden's Why Cities Lose. Several more books that I read in 2020 will be reviewed in 2021.\n\nOn Mar. I wrote a list of observations on the presidential race up to that point.\n\nAlso in March, Welton argued the case that American foreign policy in Afghanistan has been a disaster and will continue to be so unless a more traditional strategy of installing and backing a proper monarch is adopted.\n\nMy glossary of social justice warrior terminology is the most popular article ever posted at Zeroth Position. After two years of continued craziness from radical leftists, I decided to revise and expand it to create a second edition in 2018. I did so again this year. This is likely to need continual updating, and two years is a proper amount of time between editions, so look for the fourth edition in 2022.\n\nOf course, the overarching theme of 2020 was the novel coronavirus, or the Wēnyì (Chinese: 瘟疫; plague, pestilence, epidemic, murrain), as we prefer to call it here at Zeroth Position. I wrote an essay addressing pandemic response from a libertarian reactionary perspective. Before this, my poetic side came out as I wrote song lyrics to the tune of Don't Fear the Reaper about the plague and the ineffective public health response.\n\nI welcomed Edward Maxwell III, the fifth additional writer at Zeroth Position, in August for a series called Colonize Your Bookshelf, the title of which is a jab at social justice warrior rhetoric about “decolonizing spaces.” Four parts were published in 2020, each of which summarizes and analyzes a book or essay that progressives would likely find distasteful and which is available or intended for future release through Maxwell's own Imperium Press. Part IV reviews Fustel de Coulanges' The Ancient City. titleThe Economic Fallacies of Black Friday: 2020 Edition
body![image.png](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmbh7iX2f2j3vqbCfb7QexHQ9pMs6JSgH5Ax1pqUSGJtbd/image.png) Tomorrow, shoppers across America will participate in the largest shopping day of the year: Black Friday. The National Retail Foundation usually releases an estimate of how many customers will be shopping during the five-day weekend from Thanksgiving Day to Cyber Monday, but the usual crowds are cause for great concern with a resurgent Wēnyì casting a dark shadow over this year's holiday shopping season. In 2019, there was an estimated consumer base of 165.3 million shoppers[1], with an actual result of 189.6 million.[2] Given the circumstances, it is difficult to guess how many there will be this year. The usual holiday season forecast that the NRF releases on October 3 was not released, as National Retail Federation Chief Economist Jack Kleinhenz described the effort as “assembling a jigsaw puzzle without all the pieces.” He said on October 1,
“Completing a puzzle is highly probable given patience, having all the pieces and having the picture on the box to guide assembly. But it's not the same when attempting to fit pieces of the economy together in today's environment. Many of the pieces are missing.

We are waiting for new data and are still assembling puzzle pieces for the 2020 holiday season. I am cautiously optimistic about the fourth quarter in terms of the economy and consumer spending, but the outlook is clouded with uncertainty pivoting on COVID-19 infection rates. The recession appears to be behind us and the re-opening of the economy over the past several months has created momentum that should carry through the fourth quarter. The test is whether consumer spending will be sustained amid wildcard puzzle pieces including policy surprises, the election and a resurgent virus.”[3]
The NRF estimated that total sales for the 2019 holiday season would be between $727.9 billion and $730.7 billion, a growth of 3.8 to 4.2 percent from 2018[4], with an actual result of $730.2 billion or 4.1 percent growth.[5] This year's estimate was released belatedly on November 23, and is between $755.3 billion and $766.7 billion, an increase of between 3.6 and 5.2 percent.[6] Applying last year's statistics to this year, we may expect total sales of $764.7 billion. The NRF estimates that retailers will hire between 475,000 and 575,000 seasonal employees, compared with the actual 562,000 they hired during the 2019 holiday season versus an estimate of 530,000 and 590,000.[4,6] We may therefore expect that retailers will actually hire about 528,300 seasonal employees. titleOn Being Suspended From Twitter
bodyhttps://i1.wp.com/www.zerothposition.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/NM_banned.jpg?w=600&ssl=1 The morning of October 28, 2020 seemed fairly normal. I awakened, had breakfast, and sat down with my morning coffee to check on my cryptocurrency investments. I made my morning rounds on Twitter. And then, it finally happened; the moment I had been simultaneously anticipating and dreading for years: Account suspended. The following, 800 strong, that I had spent over eight years amassing and cultivating was gone in an instant, as though a great fire had burned a flourishing vineyard. All of the wisdom that I shared with my audience was snuffed out, at least to the extent that they had not internalized and spread it themselves. All of the rebuttals and debunkings of Cathedral operatives and propaganda were erased, except for those published here. My easiest means of communicating with some of the brightest people present in that medium was broken. I figured that it was only a matter of time. After all, I was no stranger to Twitter's Trust and Safety Council, the organ formed in February 2016 to suppress Cathedral-disapproved opinions on the site. Despite never doing or saying anything that reasonably could be construed as illegal or immoral, I had been temporarily shut down before for speaking inconvenient truths about pet progressive causes and groups, dealing with crazy leftists with insufficient gentleness, and advocating that necessary and proper measures be taken to suppress organized violent crime and quell riots. Part of me is surprised that I lasted this long. Another part of me wonders what I posted in the past few days that made them decide to pull the plug, as no particular reason or Tweet was given as the reason for my suspension. My initial feeling upon receiving my Dear John letter was a guilty conscience, despite having no legitimate reason for which to feel guilt. These feelings were quickly replaced by anger and a desire to take action. A few minutes later, I filed an appeal, but there is no response to it as of this writing and I expect none, other than perhaps an eventual denial of appeal and formalization of the suspension. If I am lucky, someone will tell me which particular morsel of “hate speech” or “wrongthink” was the final straw. Now that almost a week has passed, though I still feel wronged, I have noticed a profound sense of calm and relief in my mental state. Just as a person who has never been in a fight fears a punch in the face more than someone who has taken one, I find that the fear and worrying about getting suspended is worse than actually being suspended. Of course, it would be much worse if I had suffered a coordinated attack across platforms, but losing only my personal Twitter is not nearly as bad as I had imagined. Moreover, I have realized in the past few days just how much difference there is between Twitter and real life. On Twitter, everyone is obsessed with the news and outraged over whatever the current political leadership or their major challengers have just said or done. In my real life, this is present but not front and center. Most of the people I know in meatspace are either just trying to get through the day and feed their families, or are working on something interesting that is at most tangentially connected to politics. Twitter is not real life, and losing it presumably for all time has given me a newfound appreciation for real life. I find that being separated from the Twitter conversation has also helped me to understand in a novel sense just how poisonous democracy can be, for it magnifies the worst aspects of politics, both in amplitude and velocity. Being expelled from the Twitter bubble is its own red-pill. I have resolved to take what Twitter intended as punishment and use it to my advantage. I will now use the time that I once spent there to focus on more productive and lucrative efforts. Perhaps I will return there someday, under a different guise, but the amount of personally identifiable information linked to that account will make doing so more difficult unless legislation is passed to curtail corporate censorship. My advice to my readers who are on Twitter is to use accounts which are completely disconnected from your true personal information, branch out onto alt-tech platforms, share Zeroth Position articles whenever the situation merits, block every ad-promoting account that you see on Twitter to hurt them financially, and work to stop corporate censorship by whatever methods you believe will be fruitful. But most of all, consider whether you need to be there at all. In retrospect, I am uncertain as to whether I did. My own stance on corporate censorship is well-known to my readers; those unfamiliar with it may explore it here. Suffice it to say that I believe that corporations, if there are to be such legal fictions at all, should be required to serve the law-abiding, taxpaying masses as a precondition of their continued existence and should be able to deny service only to people who violate the non-aggression principle in some manner. Only truly private entities should be free to discriminate. My position on this issue has not changed, but it could be improved in presentation, which will be my next essay project. As for the Zeroth Position Twitter account representing and promoting this publication, it will remain active and continue to post our articles and nothing else, as it has always done. That is, of course, unless and until it is shut down as well. My personal Minds account will take over the role that my Twitter once had, though I intend to reduce my output to one or two short posts per day rather than the dozens of daily Tweets that I had been sending. To make up for this, I will devote more time to my writing, which has suffered greatly in recent months. "body": "https://i1.wp.com/www.zerothposition.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/NM_banned.jpg?w=600&ssl=1\nThe morning of October 28, 2020 seemed fairly normal. I awakened, had breakfast, and sat down with my morning coffee to check on my cryptocurrency investments. I made my morning rounds on Twitter. And then, it finally happened; the moment I had been simultaneously anticipating and dreading for years: Account suspended.\n\nThe following, 800 strong, that I had spent over eight years amassing and cultivating was gone in an instant, as though a great fire had burned a flourishing vineyard. All of the wisdom that I shared with my audience was snuffed out, at least to the extent that they had not internalized and spread it themselves. All of the rebuttals and debunkings of Cathedral operatives and propaganda were erased, except for those published here. My easiest means of communicating with some of the brightest people present in that medium was broken.\n\nI figured that it was only a matter of time. Another part of me wonders what I posted in the past few days that made them decide to pull the plug, as no particular reason or Tweet was given as the reason for my suspension.\n\nMy initial feeling upon receiving my Dear John letter was a guilty conscience, despite having no legitimate reason for which to feel guilt. Of course, it would be much worse if I had suffered a coordinated attack across platforms, but losing only my personal Twitter is not nearly as bad as I had imagined.\n\nMoreover, I have realized in the past few days just how much difference there is between Twitter and real life. Being expelled from the Twitter bubble is its own red-pill.\n\nI have resolved to take what Twitter intended as punishment and use it to my advantage. In retrospect, I am uncertain as to whether I did.\n\nMy own stance on corporate censorship is well-known to my readers; those unfamiliar with it may explore it here. My position on this issue has not changed, but it could be improved in presentation, which will be my next essay project.\n\nAs for the Zeroth Position Twitter account representing and promoting this publication, it will remain active and continue to post our articles and nothing else, as it has always done. Some of these new essays may be published elsewhere as I attempt to extend my reach and reclaim some of the online presence that Twitter has unjustly taken from me.\n\nUntil next sign,\n\nNullus Maximus: Founder, CEO, and Editor-in-Chief of Zeroth Position",
