titleA letter from stupid me to smart future me
bodyI am writing this letter to myself, to read it each time I forget why I am doing what I am doing or I feel lost. The idea of a letter to the “future me” came from a Leadership workshop that I had recently. I choose this title because often I had the feeling I was quite stupid in the past, which is maybe also a good sign that I have learned some new things in between ^^ For now, this is what motivates and guide the smart present me. I would also like to share it with you. I am hoping some people can relate to some of these values :) *Dear Zakaria,* *Please,* *- Work hard* *- Believe in yourself* *- Be proud* *- Have a roadmap* *- Have a plan* *- Have fun* *- Listen actively* *- Don’t give up the last moment* *- Have values* *- Have a purpose* *- People have usually some personal agendas, be aware of it* *- Be positive* *- Stay open and curious* *- Just do it, be brave, break the rules.* *- Focus on mastering* *- Share* *- Talk about it* *- Love people* *- Empathy* *- Continuous feedback* *- Ask people for their expectations* *I wish you all the best in your journey. Best of luck :)* *Zakaria* ![IRAS7032.JPG](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmeVLgpijaUruwJMoAG4TdVQiaPVAgwRTjTQreg54J6UNT/IRAS7032.JPG) Cheers from Berlin Zak Keep in touch [Instagram](http://instagram.com/zakariajaiathe) & [Facebook](http://facebook.com/zakariajaiatheofficial)

titleFrom Safi to SAP ( Part 4 & last )
body*Believe in yourself, you can become anything you want, if you really want.* When I started studying in France, I had a lot of questions in mind, do I want to go back to Morocco just after, work two years in France then go back or go to some other country. Just a lot of questions that I guess many Moroccans or expats ask themselves. Most of the engineering schools in France require three internships during the curriculum, usually during summer. The first one is 1–2 months, the second 3–4 months and the last one to write the Master thesis for 5–6 months. I decided I will do the first one in Morocco, the second in France and the last in some foreign country, mainly Japan, Germany or USA. The idea was to try first the Moroccan market, to get a glimpse about how business works there. The french market was also very important for me, because I didn’t want to only have a french diploma without some professional experience. It is also a strategic market if one day I decide to go back to Morocco. The reason I picked the second year’s internship is that it is very crucial for getting a good internship project for the last year. Thus, a second 4 months internship in some good company in France was of a great value. For my final masters internship, I was very interested in doing it in Japan, USA or Germany. Mainly because these three countries are doing economically better than France. I wanted to understand why they are so successful by being at the very heart of their economy. # Working in Morocco *Empathy, empathy and empathy before all when dealing with people.* My first internship was at Total in Casablanca. I found this internship trough my uncle. He is working there, so, it made it a little easy to get the two months internship. I wish I could find that internship in a more fair way, but it was very hard to get in touch with Moroccan companies from France at that time, mainly because of the lack of a proper IT infrastructure where I could just apply online. The challenge in this internship was not technical, but more in commuting to work. I didn’t have enough resources to rent an apartment in Casablanca, my uncle was living in Rabat, so I just stayed at his place. Every day, we were taking the train from Rabat to Casablanca (87 KM). I discovered that a lot of people were doing the same. Not because of a lack of resources, but, mainly because the quality of life in Rabat is better, it is greener, the air is less polluted, … At Total I was working in the IT support department. We are mainly responsible for fixing hardware and software issues. This helped me to understand a lot service jobs in a professional context. Golden rule, users don’t read the manual, don’t try to check online, if you make it easy for them to reach out to support service, they will make it their first option. In this internship, I was also responsible for another project. I had to help a third party company in implementing their software by providing them internal workflows in a standardised format. The social life has been just wonderful during these two months. 😍😀 There was no canteen in the office. We used to bring our food from home. Every day, I, my uncle, my tutor Youssef, Aziz the external IT colleague and two other colleagues will meet for lunch. We just mix all our lunches and share them. It wasn’t synchronised, so we could end up eating pasta, fries and pizza some days. It was very challenging to figure out every day how to make one meal out of 6 or 7 meals, but it was fun. We always laughed about colleagues who brought things from the day before, or who are always cooking the same thing. It was just fun. 😁 During this internship, it was the first time I heard about SAP. I can’t forget how Aziz, Youssef or my uncle were talking about that magical software or about the one guy they knew who became rich just because he mastered some SAP modules. At that time, I decided I want to work for that company. They told me it will be impossible. Challenge accepted. ![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmZntLmwxD6DV1RWcvc4GeA91st5vvgoBe8RgYHKLhdvUx/image.png) # Getting an internship in France *Don’t be afraid to ask for your comfort* My second internship was at Bull in France. This time I made it myself. I just applied online, did the interviews and it simply worked. I applied to hundreds of internships before getting this one. I did a first phone interview, then they asked me to come from Bordeaux to Grenoble for an on-site interview. At that time, even I didn’t have a lot of other options in the pipeline, I asked them that I will only go if they pay for me the transport + hotel. Surprisingly, they accepted 😃 I finally got the offer and accepted it. This internship was just fitting my plan. After I was accepted at ENSIMAG in Grenoble, I wanted to do an internship in the same city for many reasons. First, I wanted to meet people from the school and connect with them before I start. I felt that one of the greatest assets of that school was to build a strong network, so I wanted to do it as fast as possible. Then, I wanted to take time to find a proper apartment, which is of course a little easier in summer compared to when the semester starts. Both goals were achieved, I could meet people from the school or who have studied there at Bull. I also could make some nice friends and we rented after a cool apartment together. # Working at Bull *In your journey to achieve your dreams, you will have to be brave and take a first step at a certain point.* The work culture was different from Morocco. I was lucky to work in a big campus. We had many nice facilities at work. We could also rent books, games, kayak, tents ... My task was pure development this time. I was working in a special team who is working for IBM as a part of a partnership between the two companies. It was the first time that I discover the challenge of working with teams from different locations. Our IBM team was based in Austin, USA. One nice story that happened to me during this internship was that I dared to ask to have a one to one meeting with the head of Bull Grenoble, he was head of more than 400 people and a very important C level executive inside the company. The campus in Grenoble was also one of the important ones for R&D at Bull. You can imagine how busy he was. I just wanted to be brave and ask him, if it works, I would love to get all possible advices from him about how to work hard for your dreams and for a good career. I didn’t think about the fact that he may reject, I already started imagining the meeting and planning my questions. That was my only focus. Finally, it worked, he accepted to meet me in person 😃 This made me a small celebrity in the team. Suddenly, my tutor, his boss and a lot of other people would approach me for all kinds of questions they would have loved to ask him, a lot of politics. Of course I didn’t ask him all these questions, I just read all of them, and took two or three questions that I would ask him in my own words. I went to his office, I could see he was crazy busy. A big fancy office. I was waiting till he finished his important calls, then he asked, so what do you want. I was 21 at that time. I started by mentioning how inspired I was by his career, then I talked a little about my background, he became open and started talking nonstop, I didn’t have to do anything else, he was just throwing a lot of important advices. Our 45 min went fast. After that meeting I was contacted by some higher ranked manager who offered me a job as a manager of a small team. I said I would think about it, but, I knew I want to try another country. So I never responded back to that offer. Bull was bought by Atos few years later. ![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmVuLP9pcqeanNHPpQwgTBnN3ngQ6ACWxUurVqDqHnUwNn/image.png) # Applying for SAP Opportunity is when the randomness of life gives you a choice that makes your dreams even bigger. It was my final year at the engineering school ENSIMAG. I was determined to do my final Master’s internship abroad. Mainly, I was applying to offers in Japan, USA and Germany. At that time my English was still OK, I could have B2 level the year before. Still, I didn’t feel comfortable speaking it. USA was the best pick if taking in consideration that for the other two countries I have to learn new languages that I have zero knowledge about, German & Japanese. Honestly, I didn’t think at all about the language barrier at that time. I was only focused on moving to these countries and learning their work culture. Our school organised a forum where they invited some companies to come and advertise their internship offers. Among them, SAP, Google and Microsoft. I applied there, got contacted after a while. I did all my interviews in English. I couldn’t speak fluently at that time, but, somehow it worked. I had three interviews, first an offline coding task. After, a first HR interview focusing mainly on my ambitions and motivation of applying for that internship. The last one was technical focusing more on some technical questions and a small live coding task. It went all well. I also had some other interviews with other companies. Some went well, others not. Don’t give up if you fail a lot of interviews, keep trying, even the greatest mind in this world have failed some job interview at a certain point. Focus on improving yourself after each failed one. I moved to Germany finally in February 2014. ![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmRW2mD3YLnP15bzVDg9KnDQwFXzEVaSDKuKbQhrRR3cKN/image.png) # Life in Germany vs France *You want an opportunity go there where no one like you was* The first time I felt I am really living in a foreign country was in Germany. It is very different from living in France. Different language, and a culture that I didn’t grow up influenced by. I learned a lot in the last 4 years that I stayed in this awesome country. The way of discussing subjects and finding arguments, the work culture, being straight and honest, respecting the time, … all the stereotypes about Germans have some truth in them. Suddenly being a Moroccan became an asset instead of a hindrance. In both the private and professional life. I can’t forget how super excited people were when I told them I come from Morocco, they were truly interested and were asking me tons of questions about Marrakech, Chefchaouen, … that was not the same experience I had back in France. The situation in France was a little bit tense, I felt people many times at work there would behave in front of me and try not to say what they really believe about people from Maghreb. My french friends would tell me that they hang out with me and like me more because I am a “special” Moroccan. I love French food, cheese, I also have some good French friends. But, still, I feel, more comfortable living in Germany or other countries. My ultimate advice to anyone living in Morocco or Maghreb, when you think about traveling or studying abroad, keep your mind open, there are a lot of opportunities and lessons to learn if you go to other countries. France is already full of Moroccans and we are already super influenced by the culture. Look for new horizons, and try new things. Make yourself special. And of course, learn English. After Heidelberg, I moved to Berlin. People are very creative and crazy in this city. I had a lot of weird to life changing experiences. It is easy to meet a lot of international young people in this city. I will write a separate blog about Berlin 😉 # One last word Writing this blog was an amazing emotional and reflective exercise. I couldn’t cover, of course, everything in four blogs, I still have a lot of details and stories that can maybe give you a clearer picture about the challenging childhood I had, which may relate to a lot of Moroccans as well. Today, I live in Berlin and I work as a software engineer focusing on research & innovation at SAP Innovation Center in Potsdam. In 2018, it was ranked the best innovation hub in Germany. I am so proud to be the first Moroccan to join the team there. My job consists of finding the next cool technologies that can change the world of Enterprise Software. Moreover, I am running some parallel personal projects where I try mainly to promote Education, tolerance and diversity. I have realised a lot of my small dreams. I could travel to different countries in the world and do a lot of fun things that once I could never dream about affording. ![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmXADZRwP1KZ8PCaUF9t8KGRD67ZEi5BASEzeqHrHAYyAr/image.png) My biggest dream of promoting education in developing countries and having a footprint in the world of technology is still in progress. I will work very hard to see it come true. 💪 I hope this series of blogs can inspire you to work hard for your dreams and overcome the challenges you are facing or to inspire more people by sharing your own experience. Many thanks to all of you who wrote me a lot of beautiful messages, and who supported me in finishing these blogs and sharing more. "body": "*Believe in yourself, you can become anything you want, if you really want.*\n\nWhen I started studying in France, I had a lot of questions in mind, do I want to go back to Morocco just after, work two years in France then go back or go to some other country. Just a lot of questions that I guess many Moroccans or expats ask themselves.\n\nMost of the engineering schools in France require three internships during the curriculum, usually during summer. The first one is 1–2 months, the second 3–4 months and the last one to write the Master thesis for 5–6 months.\n\nI decided I will do the first one in Morocco, the second in France and the last in some foreign country, mainly Japan, Germany or USA.\n\nThe idea was to try first the Moroccan market, to get a glimpse about how business works there. The french market was also very important for me, because I didn’t want to only have a french diploma without some professional experience. It is also a strategic market if one day I decide to go back to Morocco. The reason I picked the second year’s internship is that it is very crucial for getting a good internship project for the last year. Thus, a second 4 months internship in some good company in France was of a great value.\n\nFor my final masters internship, I was very interested in doing it in Japan, USA or Germany. Mainly because these three countries are doing economically better than France. I wanted to understand why they are so successful by being at the very heart of their economy.\n\n# Working in Morocco\n*Empathy, empathy and empathy before all when dealing with people.*\n\nMy first internship was at Total in Casablanca.\n\nI found this internship trough my uncle. He is working there, so, it made it a little easy to get the two months internship. I wish I could find that internship in a more fair way, but it was very hard to get in touch with Moroccan companies from France at that time, mainly because of the lack of a proper IT infrastructure where I could just apply online.\n\nThe challenge in this internship was not technical, but more in commuting to work. I didn’t have enough resources to rent an apartment in Casablanca, my uncle was living in Rabat, so I just stayed at his place. Every day, we were taking the train from Rabat to Casablanca (87 KM). I discovered that a lot of people were doing the same. Not because of a lack of resources, but, mainly because the quality of life in Rabat is better, it is greener, the air is less polluted, …\n\nAt Total I was working in the IT support department. We are mainly responsible for fixing hardware and software issues.\n\nThis helped me to understand a lot service jobs in a professional context. Golden rule, users don’t read the manual, don’t try to check online, if you make it easy for them to reach out to support service, they will make it their first option.\n\nIn this internship, I was also responsible for another project. I had to help a third party company in implementing their software by providing them internal workflows in a standardised format.\n\nThe social life has been just wonderful during these two months. 😍😀\n\nThere was no canteen in the office. We used to bring our food from home.\n\nEvery day, I, my uncle, my tutor Youssef, Aziz the external IT colleague and two other colleagues will meet for lunch. 😁\n\nDuring this internship, it was the first time I heard about SAP. I can’t forget how Aziz, Youssef or my uncle were talking about that magical software or about the one guy they knew who became rich just because he mastered some SAP modules. At that time, I decided I want to work for that company. They told me it will be impossible. Challenge accepted.\n\n![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmZntLmwxD6DV1RWcvc4GeA91st5vvgoBe8RgYHKLhdvUx/image.png)\n\n\n# Getting an internship in France\n*Don’t be afraid to ask for your comfort*\n\nMy second internship was at Bull in France. This time I made it myself. I just applied online, did the interviews and it simply worked.\n\nI applied to hundreds of internships before getting this one.\n\nI did a first phone interview, then they asked me to come from Bordeaux to Grenoble for an on-site interview. At that time, even I didn’t have a lot of other options in the pipeline, I asked them that I will only go if they pay for me the transport + hotel. Surprisingly, they accepted 😃\n\nI finally got the offer and accepted it.\n\nThis internship was just fitting my plan. Then, I wanted to take time to find a proper apartment, which is of course a little easier in summer compared to when the semester starts.\n\nBoth goals were achieved, I could meet people from the school or who have studied there at Bull. I also could make some nice friends and we rented after a cool apartment together.\n\n# Working at Bull\n*In your journey to achieve your dreams, you will have to be brave and take a first step at a certain point.*\n\nThe work culture was different from Morocco. I was lucky to work in a big campus. We had many nice facilities at work. We could also rent books, games, kayak, tents ...\n\nMy task was pure development this time. I was working in a special team who is working for IBM as a part of a partnership between the two companies.\n\nIt was the first time that I discover the challenge of working with teams from different locations. Our IBM team was based in Austin, USA.\n\nOne nice story that happened to me during this internship was that I dared to ask to have a one to one meeting with the head of Bull Grenoble, he was head of more than 400 people and a very important C level executive inside the company. The campus in Grenoble was also one of the important ones for R&D at Bull. You can imagine how busy he was.\n\nI just wanted to be brave and ask him, if it works, I would love to get all possible advices from him about how to work hard for your dreams and for a good career. I didn’t think about the fact that he may reject, I already started imagining the meeting and planning my questions. That was my only focus. Finally, it worked, he accepted to meet me in person 😃\n\nThis made me a small celebrity in the team. Suddenly, my tutor, his boss and a lot of other people would approach me for all kinds of questions they would have loved to ask him, a lot of politics. Of course I didn’t ask him all these questions, I just read all of them, and took two or three questions that I would ask him in my own words.\n\nI went to his office, I could see he was crazy busy. Our 45 min went fast.\n\nAfter that meeting I was contacted by some higher ranked manager who offered me a job as a manager of a small team. I said I would think about it, but, I knew I want to try another country. So I never responded back to that offer.\n\nBull was bought by Atos few years later.\n\n![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmVuLP9pcqeanNHPpQwgTBnN3ngQ6ACWxUurVqDqHnUwNn/image.png)\n\n# Applying for SAP\nOpportunity is when the randomness of life gives you a choice that makes your dreams even bigger.\n\nIt was my final year at the engineering school ENSIMAG. I was determined to do my final Master’s internship abroad. Mainly, I was applying to offers in Japan, USA and Germany.\n\nAt that time my English was still OK, I could have B2 level the year before. Still, I didn’t feel comfortable speaking it.\n\nUSA was the best pick if taking in consideration that for the other two countries I have to learn new languages that I have zero knowledge about, German & Japanese. Honestly, I didn’t think at all about the language barrier at that time. I was only focused on moving to these countries and learning their work culture.\n\nOur school organised a forum where they invited some companies to come and advertise their internship offers. Among them, SAP, Google and Microsoft.\n\nI applied there, got contacted after a while. I did all my interviews in English. I couldn’t speak fluently at that time, but, somehow it worked.\n\nI had three interviews, first an offline coding task. After, a first HR interview focusing mainly on my ambitions and motivation of applying for that internship. The last one was technical focusing more on some technical questions and a small live coding task.\n\nIt went all well. I also had some other interviews with other companies. Some went well, others not. Don’t give up if you fail a lot of interviews, keep trying, even the greatest mind in this world have failed some job interview at a certain point. Focus on improving yourself after each failed one.\n\nI moved to Germany finally in February 2014.\n\n\n![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmRW2mD3YLnP15bzVDg9KnDQwFXzEVaSDKuKbQhrRR3cKN/image.png)\n\n# Life in Germany vs France\n*You want an opportunity go there where no one like you was*\n\nThe first time I felt I am really living in a foreign country was in Germany. It is very different from living in France. Different language, and a culture that I didn’t grow up influenced by.\n\nI learned a lot in the last 4 years that I stayed in this awesome country. The way of discussing subjects and finding arguments, the work culture, being straight and honest, respecting the time, … all the stereotypes about Germans have some truth in them.\n\nSuddenly being a Moroccan became an asset instead of a hindrance. In both the private and professional life. I can’t forget how super excited people were when I told them I come from Morocco, they were truly interested and were asking me tons of questions about Marrakech, Chefchaouen, … that was not the same experience I had back in France.\n\nThe situation in France was a little bit tense, I felt people many times at work there would behave in front of me and try not to say what they really believe about people from Maghreb. My french friends would tell me that they hang out with me and like me more because I am a “special” Moroccan.\n\nI love French food, cheese, I also have some good French friends. But, still, I feel, more comfortable living in Germany or other countries.\n\nMy ultimate advice to anyone living in Morocco or Maghreb, when you think about traveling or studying abroad, keep your mind open, there are a lot of opportunities and lessons to learn if you go to other countries. France is already full of Moroccans and we are already super influenced by the culture. Look for new horizons, and try new things. Make yourself special. And of course, learn English.\n\nAfter Heidelberg, I moved to Berlin. People are very creative and crazy in this city. I had a lot of weird to life changing experiences. titleFrom Safi to SAP ( Part 3 )
body*Stay open, stay curious, everything is possible if you try the right way.* After passing the French and Moroccan exams, I was accepted to a number of schools. My best options for computer science were ENSIAS in Morocco and ENSEIRB-MATMECA in France. I wanted to go to France. I just felt that my life will become normal if I only stay in Morocco. I wanted to experience something new. The hard reality, my mother, main supporter, cannot afford to send me to France. I have applied for a scholarship and for a student loan as well in Morocco. one week before the deadline of the registration in the French school, I still didn’t get any answer. People around us were more realistic, if I don’t have money, I shouldn’t go. # I owe it all to my mother We only live once, if we have to do something special it’s now or never. I can’t forget that summer. We were at the grandparents' house, it was super full of people, as usual, the whole family was there, my uncle from France, the family from Rabat, … People were happy, but I wasn’t. Me, who smiles all the time, always telling jokes and making cool vibes. My mother saw me, and then she came to me full of emotions, and braveness, she asked me: “do you really want to go to France?”. I said “Hell yeah” She said “can you get ready in three days?”, this requires a lot of paperwork, contacting the school, gathering more info, buying some winter clothes, suitcase, … I said “yeah”. She said “Then get ready. You are going.” This conversation will stay in my mind forever. I wasn’t sure how she will do it, she has been just brave and a huge risk taker. I asked about the money, she told me she will take a loan, the max she can from the bank, with the highest interest rate, and gives it to me. The amount she was talking about, was enough to support me for 3 months in France if I live on a budget, including the registration fee. Imagine you are traveling to a new country to study, you are not used to traveling abroad, you only know the name of the school and that they are teaching computer science. Then, you have to get ready in three days. I didn’t waste any second, I had one of the craziest three days, I barely slept 2 hours a day. 3 am, the last day before the registration deadline, I was still in Safi, in front of my computer trying to find flights. I was trying to book, my mother’s visa card didn’t work, suddenly the internet stopped as well. The last thing you could expect. I was tired, stressed, … but somehow I didn’t feel lost. I knew that I want to go, and I felt I shouldn’t miss that opportunity. I didn’t care about the limits of my body, I was only focusing on one goal, getting inside that airplane. I talked to my mother and we just decided to go to Marrakech and book the flight directly from the airport. Finally, it really happened, and I made it to Bordeaux. :) # Arriving in Bordeaux I arrived at midnight, super tired. I didn’t have a smartphone at that time ^^, I also didn’t know anyone in the city. But I knew my way: a bus, then a tram for 1h30 min. haha A funny story happened, when I arrived at the bus, I had only 100 euros notes. The driver of the last bus didn’t want to accept them. And asked me to just go out find the change, but he doesn’t guarantee he will wait for me. It wasn’t funny after a tiring journey. I was trying to explain that there is no way for me to miss the last bus, I also knew that taxis are expensive in France, it would have cost me maybe 100 euros. I didn’t want to sleep in the airport either, actually, I wasn’t even sure if it was allowed there. Finally, a Moroccan passenger stood up and paid me the fee 1,60 euros. :) I arrived at my student dormitory, very late, the day after, I woke up, went to school. Registration is done ;) That was the start of a life-changing experience. # ENSEIRB-MATMECA Work first, party later. First time in a French school, with French people. The first foreigners I am meeting. ^^ From the beginning, I had some funny stories. haha In Morocco, we usually cheek-kiss 4 times between men, and in my city Safi, we usually don’t cheek-kiss girls. Not knowing much about the French culture, I was doing what I grow up doing. haha, that was weird. French people cheek-kiss only with girls when they are friends, never between guys. My student life started. The studies weren’t hard like it was in Prepa. The main challenge was to study with other people who have been focusing on computer science during the last two years while I and other ex Prepa classmates spent time learning about Chemistry, physics, … which we didn’t use anymore. Prepa is cool if you want to keep an open view on many fields if you want to be a swiss knife army type of engineer. Otherwise, if you know after high school that you are interested in a certain subject in particular and that you want to dive deep into it, then probably Prepa is a waste of time. Prepa increases your chance to be more open, and schools, in general, increase your chance of becoming an expert on a certain subject, but they don’t guarantee this. It all depends on how motivated you are. Don’t blame it all on schools, they are most probably doing their job, you should do your homework as well. # Still living on a budget? The money my mother gave me was enough for three months. We had a lot of pressure from a lot of people waiting to see how this risky experience will fail. For the only stupid reason of saying after “I told you so”, “ I told you it will fail”, and prove they were right. People, please.. ^^ After talking to some people in France, I figured out that it’s possible to work and study in parallel. That was my backup plan. Miracles happen sometimes. After two months, I got the positive answers from Morocco. I could get both a scholarship and a Student loan. It was such a great news. I took both of them. My small family consisting now of my mother and two brothers was so much in debt. My two brothers had also a lot of requirements and needed more money for their studies. My father was a little offline because we all supported our mother ^^ I took the responsibility of supporting both my brothers. I wanted them to get the best education possible. I am super proud of them, they are both now studying electronic engineering and architecture in Europe. Unfortunately, without a scholarship. Having money allowed me to do a lot of things. I could finally travel. ![Screen Shot 2018-09-11 at 22.38.41.png](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmPczZ7rntS1acehR8xh4fjQfDSUuEFueUjdXpjCTYYj5N/Screen%20Shot%202018-09-11%20at%2022.38.41.png) # Moving to ENSIMAG Still, at ENSEIRB-MATMECA, computer science classes were a mixture of coding, algorithmics, and math. Obviously, I was ok with the coding classes compared to the rest of the class, but I handled better theory classes. I was the major in my class in Math 20/20. After seeing some of my results, our Algorithmic teacher, Mr. Denis Lapoire, told me that there might be a possibility of transfer to ENSIMAG which is one of the greatest schools in Computer Science in France. Focusing more on Mathematics compared to my current engineering school. The funny thing is that there was no direct partnership between the two schools, it was just a freestyle application and trying to convince them that I have a nice profile. Which I did at a certain point. I collected some recommendation letters and just applied, it worked. I could never imagine that this scenario is possible when I joined ENSEIRB-MATMECA. For me, ENSIMAG was a school that I missed during my exams, and there was only one chance. I missed it. After that, I really started believing that “impossible” is just a word that people say to give you a quick answer. Most of the time no one will spend enough time and resources to fulfill your requests. If you want something, act as if it’s possible. “No”, only means you should try in a different way next time. Keep trying until you get it or you are not interested anymore. # After work, party. The student life was not only about studying in France, it was also a lot of partying, meeting new people, games, fun, dating, … Our school parties weren’t that attractive tho, as 90% percent were guys haha. I started my life studying in a male school and I was finishing my university studies in a male-dominated school. What did I do wrong in this life hh. Outside of the school, there was a lot going on. Erasmus, private events, Meetups, professional events, and just a lot of random things. I was always interested in doing new things, hanging out with different people. My network included not only French and Moroccan engineer classmates but also other nationalities (Chinese, Romanians, British, Koreans …) and other specialties or professions (Medicine, psychology, security agents, language, …) I started to learn how to dance rock-and-roll and Kizomba for a while. I was a super fan of Latino clubs. We also won once the best Erasmus picture in Bordeaux. ![Screen Shot 2018-09-11 at 22.50.48](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmRUz6hNDhqbNLr4vAsB5DhoApnE2PAmYCvrUA4wnTHeN6/image.png) ![Screen Shot 2018-09-11 at 22.39.54](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmQEfDXAVtfTXMmGcTaMNj39B5Voj4wyvYiyTkgmkfBtuA/image.png) Looking back at it, I think it was a wonderful thing to just connect with different people from different backgrounds. titleFrom Safi to SAP ( Part 2 )
body*Life is ups and downs, don’t let the downs destroy your dreams.* After finishing high school, life has been just wonderful. I was accepted for all the entrance exams of the schools and universities I have applied to, such as medicine, engineering, architecture, and even the naval academy. I can’t forget how my parents and my whole family were proud of my results. Suddenly, I became a celebrity and I was receiving gifts and greetings, from some family members that I have never met before in my life, like a cousin of my father, or his son. It’s a very Moroccan thing ^^ I was the only one accepted on the main list from my high school to join Prepa, for those who don’t know it, this is a very selective program after high school that prepares students to enter Moroccan or French Grandes Ecoles. It is an intensive two years of Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, Philosophy, Chemistry, … almost everything. I knew from the very beginning that this was what I want. Still, I wanted to pass all kinds of entrance exams, to gain more experience and also I used it as an excuse to travel around Morocco. # Entrance Exams Since I already got the school I wanted, I was not taking the entrance exams so seriously. I wasn’t prepared or ready for anyone, I would just decide to go very spontaneously. I had a lot of funny stories, really a lot haha, I will just pick one in this blog. ## ENA In 2009, ENA was still the only architecture school in Morocco. We were only two from my city (population +300.000 ) to be selected for passing the entrance exam. By coincidence, I was in Rabat to help my aunt to paint her apartment when the exam was going to take place. So I decided to give it a try. I went there, the first thing that caught my attention was that 90% of the students spoke only in French. I was really confused and thought at the beginning that they might be French. There was only another guy who seemed to be confused. I somehow felt directly that he was like me, Science Math from a popular background. And he really was. ^^ We were the only two in the room who spoke only Darija (Moroccan Arabic). We then decided to talk to the other people. Most of them studied in French or private schools in Casablanca or Rabat. Apparently, they speak more French than Moroccan dialect there. I was still confident, because, I was thinking that we will have some Math exams, then I can rock ^^. Well, there was no Math exam at all. We had three exams, the first was drawing, the second was commenting on a picture and the third one was presenting all of it to a jury in French. I have to admit, if there is any skill that I lack, it is drawing. I am really bad. We had to draw a very complicated figure, I decided to draw it super small to hide all the errors. ^^ During the interview, they asked me why did I draw it small, I told them, very innocently, I thought we would have to draw other figures on the same paper, thus, I just let space for the rest. Then, they asked me if I can draw it again in front of them in an A4 format. haha, I couldn’t hide anymore, I simply told them, I can, but I am not super confident it will be wow. I got the results after, no surprise, I was not admitted to this school. That was the only one that I wasn’t accepted the entrance to. All the other exams I passed were successful, because there was Math in all of them ^^ By the way, I really love art. # Prepa After the fun summer, it was time to start a new journey at Prepa Ibn Taymia in Marrakech. It was the first time that I had to leave my parent’s house in Safi to live in another city. I remember when my uncle told me “Home won’t be home anymore after you leave” It took me quite some time before I could realize what he really meant. It was a very important step in my life to leave my city and go to study in Marrakech. It was the beginning of a long adventure that I am still living till today. Ibn Taymia, was a very special place. It gathered the best students from the whole region of Marrakech, Safi, Essaouira, Ouerzazate and a lot of other cities nearby. They all were used to being the top of their classes and they were there to be first. I would say it was one of the most competitive and intense two years ever in my life. All we did was to study, eat, study, eat, study, toilet, and study again. Some exceptional students were sleeping 3–4h / day during two years. There were different options that one can choose, I was MPSI, which focuses more on Math. I was decided to be one of the top students. I was pretty successful in achieving this goal at the very beginning. I managed to be the major of the very first Math exam. I was so glad. ![1_iJwHp8kVkWX5450ojve_Qw.png](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmbEQ9aUtG4SExq8G51WWynRkAYP3jGMAhpMKpeJJbiZ9k/1_iJwHp8kVkWX5450ojve_Qw.png) # What doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger Life is not always up, it will go down at a certain point. It is just part of the randomness and imperfection of this world. A lot of my classmates & friends, till today, don’t know that life has been really super down for me just some time after starting Prepa. During my first year, the problems between my parents increased. My mother tried her best to not let me know, but, I could feel something was going on, and then I knew what was going on. The whole year was chaotic for me, my brothers and my parents. The summer between the two years of prepa, finally, my parents decided to divorce. Suddenly, two houses, two sides. It was a bad divorce. Since I was the oldest brother, also because it was in Morocco, I suddenly had a lot of responsibility toward the family and I had to play the role of a father for my brothers. I had to make sure they will focus on their studies. It wasn’t easy to manage my highly demanding studies & my new family context. Still, I decided to do my best. # Grandes Ecoles During the two years I spent at Ibn Taymia, I developed more and more a passion for Computer Science. I was more interested in French Grandes Ecoles. I wanted to leave Morocco and try to study abroad. Wasn’t it my dream since I was a kid. The main issue was that the French exams were 2 months before the Moroccan exams. After a few months of starting the second year, I started worrying that if I follow the rhythm of our class, we won’t finish most of the subjects before the French exams. Thus, I decided to take the risk of not attending any class any more and just learn by myself and try to get ready on time. The exams were approaching. I was still worried that I am not ready enough, but I was also excited that I am finally traveling abroad. The cool thing was that if you study in Prepa, usually the process of getting a visa is easier. Still, I had to convince my uncle who is living in France to be my guarantor. He accepted :) I got my visa :D First destination ever outside Morocco, was to Toulouse. I will never forget the airport of Blagnac. Honestly, when I just arrived, I was expecting a cutting edge technology, maybe some electromagnetic city trains, flying cars, … from all the futuristic keynotes and videos I saw online. Well, I wasn’t impressed, maybe because I raised my expectations so high. I arrived at my uncle’s place, he lives in a beautiful apartment in the city center. Suddenly, I forgot about my exams and I just wanted to go out and discover. Even, when I started passing the exams, I was always doing a lot of activities after, like swimming, cinema, watching football in some bars, sightseeing or shopping. It was a bad thing to travel the first time directly to pass exams, I really couldn’t focus only on my exams. Everything was super new for me, even during the exams I would stare at people, I was curious about everything, the room, people, teachers. I went back to Morocco, after one amazing week. After a while, I received the great news that I succeeded in the written exams. They were 70 out of 200 to pass the written exams from my Prepa in Marrakech, only 40 made it to the oral exams in Paris. I traveled alone to Paris, I still remember the hotel and the room where I stayed exactly, hotel F5 Saint-Ouen. Another adventure began, I was impressed by the city this time, because my expectations were adjusted after my first trip, and also because it was the first worldwide famous city I visit. I passed successfully the oral exams. Only 17 students made it this time, and only 6 could integrate later on one of the schools in France. ![1_yJTTM2f2tpYT5JPiUaeb3Q (1).jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmfUQaM8oE8G9M7VoZVbkDNTxhtSrG7Z3A3mYyY55FTomp/1_yJTTM2f2tpYT5JPiUaeb3Q%20(1).jpeg) # Stay positive, work hard, make it happen My mother is the source of all the positivity I am having in life. She always pushes me to be brave and to do things even when they seem impossible, if she can solve a problem today, she won’t worry about tomorrow because tomorrow is another day. It’s crazy, but somehow it really works. Moreover, I had a huge support from my uncle living in Morocco, from my grandfather who just loved education and people who are willing to study. I was lucky to have an uncle living in France already which is not the case for a lot of people, it was just a beautiful gift of random life to have someone who can support me when the administrative things in France. What happened to me in these two years taught me one very important lesson in life, there is no point in looking for an excuse to justify your failures to the world. Of course people will show empathy when you say you are poor, sick, or having any other conditions. But, if you really look inside you, you know that you can do better than just explaining how shitty your life is for people. Focus on doing your best. All the people have their ups and downs. When you are down, take some time, but make sure to stand up again & work hard for your dreams. Never give up. If you want to be special, you have to overcome your weak moments in life. "body": "*Life is ups and downs, don’t let the downs destroy your dreams.*\n\nAfter finishing high school, life has been just wonderful. I was accepted for all the entrance exams of the schools and universities I have applied to, such as medicine, engineering, architecture, and even the naval academy.\n\nI can’t forget how my parents and my whole family were proud of my results. Suddenly, I became a celebrity and I was receiving gifts and greetings, from some family members that I have never met before in my life, like a cousin of my father, or his son. It’s a very Moroccan thing ^^\n\nI was the only one accepted on the main list from my high school to join Prepa, for those who don’t know it, this is a very selective program after high school that prepares students to enter Moroccan or French Grandes Ecoles. It is an intensive two years of Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, Philosophy, Chemistry, … almost everything.\n\nI knew from the very beginning that this was what I want. Still, I wanted to pass all kinds of entrance exams, to gain more experience and also I used it as an excuse to travel around Morocco.\n\n# Entrance Exams\nSince I already got the school I wanted, I was not taking the entrance exams so seriously. I wasn’t prepared or ready for anyone, I would just decide to go very spontaneously.\n\nI had a lot of funny stories, really a lot haha, I will just pick one in this blog.\n\n## ENA\n\nIn 2009, ENA was still the only architecture school in Morocco. We were only two from my city (population +300.000 ) to be selected for passing the entrance exam.\n\nBy coincidence, I was in Rabat to help my aunt to paint her apartment when the exam was going to take place. So I decided to give it a try.\n\nI went there, the first thing that caught my attention was that 90% of the students spoke only in French. I was really confused and thought at the beginning that they might be French. There was only another guy who seemed to be confused. I somehow felt directly that he was like me, Science Math from a popular background. And he really was. ^^\n\nWe were the only two in the room who spoke only Darija (Moroccan Arabic). We then decided to talk to the other people. Most of them studied in French or private schools in Casablanca or Rabat. Apparently, they speak more French than Moroccan dialect there.\n\nI was still confident, because, I was thinking that we will have some Math exams, then I can rock ^^. Well, there was no Math exam at all. We had three exams, the first was drawing, the second was commenting on a picture and the third one was presenting all of it to a jury in French.\n\nI have to admit, if there is any skill that I lack, it is drawing. I am really bad. We had to draw a very complicated figure, I decided to draw it super small to hide all the errors. ^^\nDuring the interview, they asked me why did I draw it small, I told them, very innocently, I thought we would have to draw other figures on the same paper, thus, I just let space for the rest. Then, they asked me if I can draw it again in front of them in an A4 format. haha, I couldn’t hide anymore, I simply told them, I can, but I am not super confident it will be wow.\n\nI got the results after, no surprise, I was not admitted to this school.\n\nThat was the only one that I wasn’t accepted the entrance to. All the other exams I passed were successful, because there was Math in all of them ^^\n\nBy the way, I really love art.\n\n# Prepa\nAfter the fun summer, it was time to start a new journey at Prepa Ibn Taymia in Marrakech. It was the first time that I had to leave my parent’s house in Safi to live in another city. I remember when my uncle told me “Home won’t be home anymore after you leave” It took me quite some time before I could realize what he really meant.\n\nIt was a very important step in my life to leave my city and go to study in Marrakech. It was the beginning of a long adventure that I am still living till today.\n\nIbn Taymia, was a very special place. It gathered the best students from the whole region of Marrakech, Safi, Essaouira, Ouerzazate and a lot of other cities nearby.\n\nThey all were used to being the top of their classes and they were there to be first. I would say it was one of the most competitive and intense two years ever in my life.\n\nAll we did was to study, eat, study, eat, study, toilet, and study again. Some exceptional students were sleeping 3–4h / day during two years.\n\nThere were different options that one can choose, I was MPSI, which focuses more on Math.\n\nI was decided to be one of the top students. I was pretty successful in achieving this goal at the very beginning. I managed to be the major of the very first Math exam. I was so glad.\n\n![1_iJwHp8kVkWX5450ojve_Qw.png](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmbEQ9aUtG4SExq8G51WWynRkAYP3jGMAhpMKpeJJbiZ9k/1_iJwHp8kVkWX5450ojve_Qw.png)\n\n# What doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger\nLife is not always up, it will go down at a certain point. It is just part of the randomness and imperfection of this world.\n\nA lot of my classmates & friends, till today, don’t know that life has been really super down for me just some time after starting Prepa.\n\nDuring my first year, the problems between my parents increased. My mother tried her best to not let me know, but, I could feel something was going on, and then I knew what was going on.\n\nThe whole year was chaotic for me, my brothers and my parents.\n\nThe summer between the two years of prepa, finally, my parents decided to divorce. Suddenly, two houses, two sides. It was a bad divorce.\n\nSince I was the oldest brother, also because it was in Morocco, I suddenly had a lot of responsibility toward the family and I had to play the role of a father for my brothers. I had to make sure they will focus on their studies.\n\nIt wasn’t easy to manage my highly demanding studies & my new family context.\n\nStill, I decided to do my best.\n\n# Grandes Ecoles\nDuring the two years I spent at Ibn Taymia, I developed more and more a passion for Computer Science.\n\nI was more interested in French Grandes Ecoles.
