body![trib.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmPrb9qsYX9b1evNjCv3apkGdn9fLwj57MZkdQ8yTD9c4U/trib.jpg) The Shontrash Birodhi Raju Sharokh Bhashkorjo (Anti Terrorism Raju Memorial Sculpture) near TSC in the University of Dhaka is one of those landmarks of Dhaka that is familiar to virtually everyone. The sculpture by Shaymol Chowdhury depicts a group of students, arms linked, marching in defiance. Yet, the story behind the sculpture remains largely unknown, to the point that many think the sculpture is a remembrance of '52 or '71. The Raju Bhashkorjo is dedicated to the memory of Moin Hossain Raju, an activist of Bangladesh Chatra Union, who was gunned down near where the sculpture now stands, on this day in 1992 while protesting terrorism in the name of student politics on campus. For students who participated in the 1990s mass uprising against the dictatorship of Hussain Muhammad Ershad, the time must have seemed like the dawn of a new era—full of possibilities of a strengthened democracy for Bangladesh. Instead, by 1991, for leftist students who had joined the movement, disillusionment had set in. With the fall of Ershad, both Awami League and BNP were trying to exert dominance on the Dhaka University campus. By 1992, Dhaka University was rife with clashes between the student wings of the two parties, often violent and involving shootings. Abdullah Mahmud Khan, then a student of the university and an activist of Chhatra Union, remembers being worried about the increased Jamaat-Shibir activity on campus. This was the year known war criminal Ghulam Azam was elected the Amir of Jamaat-e-Islam and Jahanara Imam had organised the Ghatak-Dalal Nirmul Committee demanding trial of the war criminals and collaborators of 1971. Abdullah Mahmud was a close friend of Raju and his roommate in Shahidullah Hall. “It has been 26 years since that day, but some things one does not forget,” he says over the phone. He remembers that the day was a Friday and that Raju had gone home instead of going to the hall the day before. On Friday morning, Shibir had tried to bring out a procession in the campus, which the general students, including Raju, had protested. This had led to a confrontation between the police and the students, and Raju was injured. So, instead of going home for lunch as he had planned, he went back to his hall room to rest. “In the evening, me, Raju and some others went out to get something to eat near Hakim Chattor,” says Abdullah Mahmud. By this time a clash had broken out between the activists of Chatra Dal and Chhatra League over control of the campus. Gunshots could be heard from the area encompassing TSC, DUS and Hakim Chattor. The police were nearby, stationed but not interfering. Raju and his friends were caught between the two sides, and at one point the police fired a tear gas shell, not at the gun-toting activists, but near TSC where general students, including Raju, were standing. Seeing the situation, Raju along with a group of 7-8 people started a procession protesting the violence on campus and the silence of the law authorities. Soon, a few hundred students had joined in, with Raju in the front leading the procession and Abdullah Mahmud right beside him. At one point, remembers Abdullah Mahmud, Raju turned to him and said, “They are firing towards us.” “Suddenly, I felt Raju was dragging me towards the ground since our arms were linked,” he says. He was squirming on the ground. A bullet had hit Raju's head. With the help of some other students, he was rushed to Dhaka Medical College and was soon declared dead. Raju died in protest of a brand of student politics which was about exerting power, which was about dominance—in short, terrorism in educational institutions in the name of student politics. Since then, this has come to define mainstream student politics—clashes, fights, wielding arms, shootings, both intra- and inter-party. And, while with the change in political circumstances, clashes between BCL and Chatra Dal have almost vanished, its place has now been taken over by BCL factions fighting amongst themselves for superiority or terrorising general students simply because they can. One does not even need to look back far: a few examples from only this month are enough to illustrate this point. On March 3, we reported how a second-year undergraduate student of Rajshahi Government College was beaten unconscious by a group of BCL activists of that college with a hammer, leaving him with a severely bruised face. A story published on March 5 involved 15 people injured in a clash between two factions of BCL on the Islamic University campus over an altercation. A student of mass communication and journalism of Rajshahi University was beaten up by BCL men over some altercation or the other, we reported on March 8. On March 10, we reported how seven students of Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (Ruet) were injured when two groups of BCL activists clashed over establishing dominance on campus. One could go on and on, from reports of sexual harassment and indiscriminate assaults carried out by activists of student wings of political parties. We are continuously reminded of the brave and heroic acts of our students in the major political movements of this country's history. But what we witness today, and have been for decades now, is a situation which hints at nothing beyond pettiness and lust for power. Our history, even when shorn of exaggerations, shows us the power of student politics in challenging unrestrained power. But, what do you do when student politics becomes the embodiment of that same thing? Instead of speaking for students and challenging wrongs, it is more interested in accumulating power? And even when punished, the punishment is merely a symbolic slap on the wrist, perpetuating the culture? Twenty-six years after Raju was killed, we do not need this day or the sculpture to remind us what drove Raju and his friends to take a stand that day. It is a shame, that in all these years, our political parties have failed to challenge this form of student politics, and have instead perpetuated it through impunity in the form of inaction and silence. This day is not about Moin Hossain Raju, student of botany and lover of Jibanananda's poetry, but what he stood for, and what we are yet to achieve.

titleGuilty, Who? The truth lies in black box
body![us-bangla_plane_crash.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmWvEZfjSMBw1ZPXixSp6F9aLZ3TsPrUb4EMRNjJrwEc6k/us-bangla_plane_crash.jpg) Confusion, buck-passing, and guessing are all what went on yesterday, a day after an US-Bangla aircraft crash-landed in Nepal to claim 51, 28 of them Bangladeshis. And, with those, it is not possible to conclude who is at fault-- the airline or Kathmandu air traffic control authority? As both pilot Abid Sultan and his very young co-pilot Prithula Rashid are dead, it is the black box of the fateful plane that is possibly holding the answer, according to a number of aviation experts and pilots that The Daily Star talked with. The conversation within the cockpit for last 3-4 minutes can only reveal what actually went wrong with the plane, pilot or communication with the tower. The aircraft's two recorders -- the cockpit voice recorder and the flight data recorder -- have both been recovered, but a report on initial investigation (decoding and analysis) by the Nepalese authorities is unlikely before a month. However, quite a few quizzical things happened in the course of landing to the disaster, the worst suffered by the Himalayan country since a 1992 Pakistan International Airlines crash that claimed 167 lives. The reported conversations between pilot and airport tower exposed terrifying moments of confusion over where to land the aircraft. And, the aircraft appeared to have been on an unstable approach and not aligned with the runway while very close to the ground. On final approach to runway 02, the aircraft crashed short of the runway, broke apart and caught fire. According to transmissions by the Kathmandu tower controller, despite cleared to land on runway 02 the flight began deviating from its course. A series of back-and-forth conversation emerged between the captain and the tower controller (both radio voices switched from female to male) about which runway the flight BS211 was aiming for. Amid much confusion -- mostly on the part of the flight crew -- the ultimate landing clearance on runway 02 was received. The crash occurred less them a minute after that. A transcript of the conversation shows the control tower had told the captain: “I say it again, do not proceed towards runway 20. Cleared to hold at your current position.” The captain agreed and said he would orbit in the air. A little later, the tower cleared the craft for landing. “BanglaStar211, runway … eh … cleared to land. Runway is vacated, either runway 02 or 20?” The captain said he would land on 20. The tower then supplied the captain with data on wind direction and speed. And just a little later, the alarmed tower asked: “BanglaStar211, confirm you have the runway in sight?” To this question the answer of the captain was quite chilling – “Negative, Sir” -- because he was on his approach to land and yet he could not see the runway. And the captain was trying to do a visual landing. The alarmed tower right away instructed: “Turn right and ah … you have the runway. Confirm you have the runway not in sight yet?” The captain veered his plane and replied back: “Affirmative. We have runway in sight. Requesting clear to land, sir.” The tower gave him the clearance. By this time, the worst thing might have happened, aviation experts guess. It was apparent that the pilot was not aligned with the runway at a low approach for which the runway was not in sight in the first place. And the craft may have been quite low in the sky. For visual landing, the pilot needs to see the runway at least from 500 feet. So the pilot may have yanked the plane to the right, it might have overbanked and lost much of the control. The next conversations between the tower and the pilot may be an indication. The pilot says: “Cleared to land runway 02.” The tower replies: “Roger. Runway 02 cleared to land.” But then strangely the pilot again asks: Sir, are we cleared to land?” The tower yells: “BanglaStar211, I say again turn ….(yelling in background)” At this point the pilot may have turned further and the aircraft stalled. Kathmandu airport at an elevation of 4,500 feet has thin air and that makes a lot of difference in maneuvering a plane. Questions also hung heavily on activities of air traffic control authorities. It apparently chose to deal dangerously with incoming flights. They were found to be clumsy in communications and focus divided. They cleared the US-Bangla aircraft to land on runway 02 only three minutes after allowing a Jet Airways flight, a Boeing 737-800, from Mumbai to land on the same runway. And midway through its conversation with pilot Abid, the tower cleared another aircraft (Buddha282) to land on runway 02. Sanjiv Gautam, director general of the Nepal's Civil Aviation Authority, however saw no wrong signals were given to US-Bangla pilot. "The weather was clear. The pilot had minimum five-kilometer visibility. The pilots confirmed that the runway was visible… (yet) the pilots were not following our instructions," he told CNN. "The aircraft displayed uncontrolled movement during landing. The alignment wasn't right; it was tilted on one side." The pilot was for sure quite experienced in flying both passenger and fighter planes. “Why is then a pilot of his stature would act strange?” A big question goes unanswered. There are lot more questions in the minds of the aviation experts. They wonder why the captain was talking to the tower instead of the copilot. In the norms of aviation, the pilot flying only concentrates on maneuvering the aircraft and pilot monitoring (the other pilot) talks to the tower. But in this case the captain himself was talking. Kathmandu being a captain's landing airport, according to many airlines policy including Biman, the question comes if the copilot was actually attempting the landing for which the captain was talking to the tower in the end. Aviation sources said the young copilot was in fact on her maiden assignment to Nepal and a junior with reasonable experience should have been tasked with this kind of critical airport. The airline, when approached, denied the inexperience claim. However, it is also not clear why the pilot attempted visual landing in a risky airport like Kathmandu. Bangladesh Biman strictly discourages visual landing in Kathmandu because it is a critical airport, also the second riskiest in Asia. Biman allows only instrumental landings. Biman's operations manual of Boeing 737-800 says “due to physical geography of Kathmandu, the Normal operation, even on a fair day, is a high work load/stress situation from the pilot point of view.” The routes for arrival and departure are specified as “difficult terrain” and Kathmandu airport as ''Special airport''. In bad weather it gets worse and a one engine fail operation that creates one of the most demanding situations for the pilot to handle, the procedure says. The approach to the runway 02 is made through a gap in the southern range of mountains. On the approach path profile, there is a mountain peak at 7,688 feet. The minimum segment altitude over this mountain is 8900ft leaving a clearance of around 1212 feet only. A pilot now working with Turkish said it was a case of “massive pilot error”. The pilot, who has experience in working with Bangladeshi carriers, said due to the inexperience of the copilot, the pilot of BS211 was maneuvering the plane and talking to the tower. The captain lost sight of the runway while switching from runway 20 to runway 02 and in Kathmandu keeping the runway in sight all the time is a must, the Turkish Airlines pilot said. There are also some questions over Dash8 Q400, the kind that had crashed in Kathmandu Monday afternoon for 146th time across the globe. The Scandinavian Air System (SAS) stopped using this aircraft in 2007 after a series of landing accidents. A captain of US-Bangla narrated his experience with Dash8 Q400 and said it is a very difficult machine to control. He was once panicked while landing in Barisal because overweight and crosswind almost threw it off the runway. Was there any fault that developed in the very late stage of the landing? US-Bangla was the fourth owner of the nearly 17-year-old aircraft, after Royal Jordanian AL, Augsburg Airways/Lufthansa Regional and Scandinavian AL. Since delivery in 2014, it recorded only one accident, a runway excursion after landing in Saidpur. There could be any of the reasons mentioned above. Unfortunately, Abid did not survive to tell what's right. So, we're left with the black box for truth to be told.

As both pilot Abid Sultan and his very young co-pilot Prithula Rashid are dead, it is the black box of the fateful plane that is possibly holding the answer, according to a number of aviation experts and pilots that The Daily Star talked with. \n\nThe conversation within the cockpit for last 3-4 minutes can only reveal what actually went wrong with the plane, pilot or communication with the tower. The aircraft's two recorders -- the cockpit voice recorder and the flight data recorder -- have both been recovered, but a report on initial investigation (decoding and analysis) by the Nepalese authorities is unlikely before a month.\n\nHowever, quite a few quizzical things happened in the course of landing to the disaster, the worst suffered by the Himalayan country since a 1992 Pakistan International Airlines crash that claimed 167 lives.\n\nThe reported conversations between pilot and airport tower exposed terrifying moments of confusion over where to land the aircraft. And, the aircraft appeared to have been on an unstable approach and not aligned with the runway while very close to the ground.\n\nOn final approach to runway 02, the aircraft crashed short of the runway, broke apart and caught fire.\n\nAccording to transmissions by the Kathmandu tower controller, despite cleared to land on runway 02 the flight began deviating from its course.\n\nA series of back-and-forth conversation emerged between the captain and the tower controller (both radio voices switched from female to male) about which runway the flight BS211 was aiming for.\n\nAmid much confusion -- mostly on the part of the flight crew -- the ultimate landing clearance on runway 02 was received. The crash occurred less them a minute after that.\n\nA transcript of the conversation shows the control tower had told the captain: “I say it again, do not proceed towards runway 20. Cleared to hold at your current position.”\n\nThe captain agreed and said he would orbit in the air.\n\nA little later, the tower cleared the craft for landing. “BanglaStar211, runway … eh … cleared to land. Runway is vacated, either runway 02 or 20?”\n\nThe captain said he would land on 20.\n\nThe tower then supplied the captain with data on wind direction and speed. And just a little later, the alarmed tower asked: “BanglaStar211, confirm you have the runway in sight?”\n\nTo this question the answer of the captain was quite chilling – “Negative, Sir” -- because he was on his approach to land and yet he could not see the runway. And the captain was trying to do a visual landing.\n\nThe alarmed tower right away instructed: “Turn right and ah … you have the runway. Confirm you have the runway not in sight yet?”\n\nThe captain veered his plane and replied back: “Affirmative. We have runway in sight. Requesting clear to land, sir.”\n\nThe tower gave him the clearance.\n\nBy this time, the worst thing might have happened, aviation experts guess. It was apparent that the pilot was not aligned with the runway at a low approach for which the runway was not in sight in the first place. And the craft may have been quite low in the sky. For visual landing, the pilot needs to see the runway at least from 500 feet.\n\nSo the pilot may have yanked the plane to the right, it might have overbanked and lost much of the control.\n\nThe next conversations between the tower and the pilot may be an indication.\n\nThe pilot says: “Cleared to land runway 02.”\n\nThe tower replies: “Roger. Runway 02 cleared to land.”\n\nBut then strangely the pilot again asks: Sir, are we cleared to land?”\n\nThe tower yells: “BanglaStar211, I say again turn ….(yelling in background)”\n\nAt this point the pilot may have turned further and the aircraft stalled. Kathmandu airport at an elevation of 4,500 feet has thin air and that makes a lot of difference in maneuvering a plane.\n\nQuestions also hung heavily on activities of air traffic control authorities. It apparently chose to deal dangerously with incoming flights. They were found to be clumsy in communications and focus divided.\n\nThey cleared the US-Bangla aircraft to land on runway 02 only three minutes after allowing a Jet Airways flight, a Boeing 737-800, from Mumbai to land on the same runway. And midway through its conversation with pilot Abid, the tower cleared another aircraft (Buddha282) to land on runway 02.\n\nSanjiv Gautam, director general of the Nepal's Civil Aviation Authority, however saw no wrong signals were given to US-Bangla pilot.\n\n\"The weather was clear. The pilot had minimum five-kilometer visibility. The pilots confirmed that the runway was visible… (yet) the pilots were not following our instructions,\" he told CNN. \"The aircraft displayed uncontrolled movement during landing. The alignment wasn't right; it was tilted on one side.\"\n\nThe pilot was for sure quite experienced in flying both passenger and fighter planes. “Why is then a pilot of his stature would act strange?” A big question goes unanswered. \n\nThere are lot more questions in the minds of the aviation experts. They wonder why the captain was talking to the tower instead of the copilot. In the norms of aviation, the pilot flying only concentrates on maneuvering the aircraft and pilot monitoring (the other pilot) talks to the tower. \n\nBut in this case the captain himself was talking. Kathmandu being a captain's landing airport, according to many airlines policy including Biman, the question comes if the copilot was actually attempting the landing for which the captain was talking to the tower in the end.\n\nAviation sources said the young copilot was in fact on her maiden assignment to Nepal and a junior with reasonable experience should have been tasked with this kind of critical airport. The airline, when approached, denied the inexperience claim. \n\nHowever, it is also not clear why the pilot attempted visual landing in a risky airport like Kathmandu. Bangladesh Biman strictly discourages visual landing in Kathmandu because it is a critical airport, also the second riskiest in Asia. Biman allows only instrumental landings.\n\nBiman's operations manual of Boeing 737-800 says “due to physical geography of Kathmandu, the Normal operation, even on a fair day, is a high work load/stress situation from the pilot point of view.”\n\nThe routes for arrival and departure are specified as “difficult terrain” and Kathmandu airport as ''Special airport''.\n\nIn bad weather it gets worse and a one engine fail operation that creates one of the most demanding situations for the pilot to handle, the procedure says.\n\nThe approach to the runway 02 is made through a gap in the southern range of mountains. On the approach path profile, there is a mountain peak at 7,688 feet. The minimum segment altitude over this mountain is 8900ft leaving a clearance of around 1212 feet only.\n\nA pilot now working with Turkish said it was a case of “massive pilot error”. The pilot, who has experience in working with Bangladeshi carriers, said due to the inexperience of the copilot, the pilot of BS211 was maneuvering the plane and talking to the tower. The captain lost sight of the runway while switching from runway 20 to runway 02 and in Kathmandu keeping the runway in sight all the time is a must, the Turkish Airlines pilot said.\n\nThere are also some questions over Dash8 Q400, the kind that had crashed in Kathmandu Monday afternoon for 146th time across the globe. The Scandinavian Air System (SAS) stopped using this aircraft in 2007 after a series of landing accidents.\n\nA captain of US-Bangla narrated his experience with Dash8 Q400 and said it is a very difficult machine to control. He was once panicked while landing in Barisal because overweight and crosswind almost threw it off the runway.\n\nWas there any fault that developed in the very late stage of the landing?\n\nUS-Bangla was the fourth owner of the nearly 17-year-old aircraft, after Royal Jordanian AL, Augsburg Airways/Lufthansa Regional and Scandinavian AL. Since delivery in 2014, it recorded only one accident, a runway excursion after landing in Saidpur. \n\nThere could be any of the reasons mentioned above. Unfortunately, Abid did not survive to tell what's right. So, we're left with the black box for truth to be told.",
