| body | 4 hechos curiosos que sucedieron durante el eclipse solar que atravesó Estados Unidos Casi 100 años pasaron sin que un eclipse solar total no cruce Estados Unidos de costa a costa. Por eso, este lunes, millones de personas vivieron la extraordinaria experiencia de presenciar un fenómeno astronómico de estas características. Además, el eclipse solar en su totalidad sólo se vio en EE.UU. Las espectaculares imágenes que dejó el eclipse solar total que cruzó a Estados Unidos de extremo a extremo Pero, cuando las miradas y cámaras apuntaban al cielo, ocurrieron algunos hechos curiosos que, a su manera, también marcaron la jornada. 1. En la foto sin invitación Según la NASA, el de este lunes fue el eclipse más fotografiado y documentado hasta la fecha, gracias a que vivimos en la era de las redes sociales. Y hubo quien no quiso perderse la oportunidad de figurar en estas históricas imágenes: la Estación Espacial Internacional (EEI).  Esa mancha es nada menos que la Estación Espacial Internacional. "Eso es la Luna, manchas solares y la estación en frente del Sol. Un fotógrafo de la NASA captura la estación en tránsito durante el eclipse de 2017", tuiteó la EEI. Muchos medios y usuarios en las redes sociales celebraron lo que en inglés llaman el photobomb, es decir, la acción de entrometerse en una foto para molestar o gastar una broma a otro. Por su parte, el astronauta de la Agencia Espacial Europea Paolo Nespoli, uno de los seis que habitan hoy en la EEI, compartió en Twitter una imagen sobre cómo se vio el eclipse desde el espacio. "No se precisan palabras", escribió el italiano al tuitear la foto donde se ve la sombra del eclipse.  Tal como dice el astronauta italiano Paolo Nespoli "no se precisan palabras" para describir la sombra del eclipse vista desde el espacio. La expedición número 52 en la EEI la completan los astronautas de la NASA Peggy Whitson, Jack Fischer y Randy Bresnik, y los cosmonautas rusos Fyodor Yurchikhin y Sergey Ryazanskiy. Estos seis afortunados vieron el eclipse no una sino tres veces. 2. "¡No mire!" Uno de los temas más recurrentes al hablar del eclipse fueron las advertencias sobre cómo cuidarse los ojos y, a la vez, disfrutar del espectáculo astronómico. Qué peligros presentaba para la vista, qué lentes no comprar o cómo fabricar artefactos caseros fueron algunos temas de extensiva discusión en la previa al evento. Cómo asegurarte de que tus lentes sean certificados y seguros para ver el eclipse solar total del 21 de agosto Sin embargo, durante unos instantes, quien pareció olvidar las advertencias para el llamado "gran eclipse de Estados Unidos" fue el presidente del país, Donald Trump.  El mandatario salió a un balcón de la Casa Blanca a disfrutar del evento junto a su esposa, Melania Trump, y su hijo menor, Barron. Si bien tenía sus gafas especiales en la mano, de forma momentánea Trump miró sin ellas al eclipse que, en Washington DC, fue parcial. En los videos filmados desde el puesto donde se encontraban los periodistas y reporteros gráficos se escucha que alguien grita al presidente: "¡No mire!". 3. Eclipse del corazón Lo más escuchado en los puntos donde se congregó gran cantidad de gente fueron las exclamaciones de sorpresa y excitación. Sin embargo, lo segundo más escuchado fue el himno no oficial del evento: Total eclipse of the heart ("Eclipse total del corazón"), el mega éxito de 1983 de la artista galesa Bonnie Tyler.  Bonnie Tyler cantó su mega éxito "Total eclipse of the heart" durante el eclipse a bordo de un crucero (foto de archivo). A 34 años de su lanzamiento, la canción alcanzó el primer lugar entre las descargas de la plataforma iTunes de Apple -destronando a "Despacito"- y fue lo más escuchado en Spotify. La balada sonó en bares, reuniones de observadores científicas y eventos públicos. Pero, ¿dónde estaba Bonnie Tyler durante el eclipse? Justamente estaba cantando Total eclipse of the heart a bordo de un crucero de la empresa Royal Caribbean, cerca de la costa de Florida (sureste de EE.UU.). De hecho, para que se adaptara a la duración del fenómeno astronómico, la artista cantó una versión de 2 minutos y 40 segundos, y no los 7 minutos del tema original incluido en el disco Faster than the speed of night. 4. ¿Y las cabras? Durante los eclipses totales de sol, ocurren algunos fenómenos naturales llamativos: la temperatura cae en varios grados, el viento cambia de dirección y los animales cambian sus hábitos, por ejemplo. Qué efectos tiene un eclipse solar total como el de este lunes sobre la Tierra Sin embargo, una de las ideas más recurrentes sobre estos eventos es que, cuando la Luna tapa al Sol en pleno día, las cabras se desmayan. La periodista de la BBC Shefali Kulkarni le presta sus lentes a una oveja en Oregon. Es lo que informalmente se llama goatality, un neologismo que combina las palabras en inglés goat ("cabra") y fatality ("fatalidad"). Para poner a prueba esta teoría, la periodista de la BBC Shefali Kulkarni viajó al condado de McMinnville, en Oregón (noroeste de EE.UU.), a una granja de cabras donde se organizaba una fiesta de observación. Y el periodista Dave Jorgenson del diario The Washington Post hizo lo propio desde otra granja en Tennessee (sureste de EE.UU.). "body": "4 hechos curiosos que sucedieron durante el eclipse solar que atravesó Estados Unidos\n\nCasi 100 años pasaron sin que un eclipse solar total no cruce Estados Unidos de costa a costa.\nPor eso, este lunes, millones de personas vivieron la extraordinaria experiencia de presenciar un fenómeno astronómico de estas características.\nAdemás, el eclipse solar en su totalidad sólo se vio en EE.UU.\nLas espectaculares imágenes que dejó el eclipse solar total que cruzó a Estados Unidos de extremo a extremo\nPero, cuando las miradas y cámaras apuntaban al cielo, ocurrieron algunos hechos curiosos que, a su manera, también marcaron la jornada.\n1. En la foto sin invitación\nSegún la NASA, el de este lunes fue el eclipse más fotografiado y documentado hasta la fecha, gracias a que vivimos en la era de las redes sociales.\nY hubo quien no quiso perderse la oportunidad de figurar en estas históricas imágenes: la Estación Espacial Internacional (EEI).\n\n\nEsa mancha es nada menos que la Estación Espacial Internacional.\n\n\"Eso es la Luna, manchas solares y la estación en frente del Sol. Un fotógrafo de la NASA captura la estación en tránsito durante el eclipse de 2017\", tuiteó la EEI.\nMuchos medios y usuarios en las redes sociales celebraron lo que en inglés llaman el photobomb, es decir, la acción de entrometerse en una foto para molestar o gastar una broma a otro.\nPor su parte, el astronauta de la Agencia Espacial Europea Paolo Nespoli, uno de los seis que habitan hoy en la EEI, compartió en Twitter una imagen sobre cómo se vio el eclipse desde el espacio.\n\n\"No se precisan palabras\", escribió el italiano al tuitear la foto donde se ve la sombra del eclipse.\n\n\nTal como dice el astronauta italiano Paolo Nespoli \"no se precisan palabras\" para describir la sombra del eclipse vista desde el espacio.\n\nLa expedición número 52 en la EEI la completan los astronautas de la NASA Peggy Whitson, Jack Fischer y Randy Bresnik, y los cosmonautas rusos Fyodor Yurchikhin y Sergey Ryazanskiy.\nEstos seis afortunados vieron el eclipse no una sino tres veces.\n2. \"¡No mire!\"\nUno de los temas más recurrentes al hablar del eclipse fueron las advertencias sobre cómo cuidarse los ojos y, a la vez, disfrutar del espectáculo astronómico.\nQué peligros presentaba para la vista, qué lentes no comprar o cómo fabricar artefactos caseros fueron algunos temas de extensiva discusión en la previa al evento.\nCómo asegurarte de que tus lentes sean certificados y seguros para ver el eclipse solar total del 21 de agosto\nSin embargo, durante unos instantes, quien pareció olvidar las advertencias para el llamado \"gran eclipse de Estados Unidos\" fue el presidente del país, Donald Trump.\n\n\n\nEl mandatario salió a un balcón de la Casa Blanca a disfrutar del evento junto a su esposa, Melania Trump, y su hijo menor, Barron.\nSi bien tenía sus gafas especiales en la mano, de forma momentánea Trump miró sin ellas al eclipse que, en Washington DC, fue parcial.\nEn los videos filmados desde el puesto donde se encontraban los periodistas y reporteros gráficos se escucha que alguien grita al presidente: \"¡No mire!\".\n3. Eclipse del corazón\nLo más escuchado en los puntos donde se congregó gran cantidad de gente fueron las exclamaciones de sorpresa y excitación.\nSin embargo, lo segundo más escuchado fue el himno no oficial del evento: Total eclipse of the heart (\"Eclipse total del corazón\"), el mega éxito de 1983 de la artista galesa Bonnie Tyler.\n\n\nBonnie Tyler cantó su mega éxito \"Total eclipse of the heart\" durante el eclipse a bordo de un crucero (foto de archivo).\n\nA 34 años de su lanzamiento, la canción alcanzó el primer lugar entre las descargas de la plataforma iTunes de Apple -destronando a \"Despacito\"- y fue lo más escuchado en Spotify.\nLa balada sonó en bares, reuniones de observadores científicas y eventos públicos.\nPero, ¿dónde estaba Bonnie Tyler durante el eclipse? Justamente estaba cantando Total eclipse of the heart a bordo de un crucero de la empresa Royal Caribbean, cerca de la costa de Florida (sureste de EE.UU.).\nDe hecho, para que se adaptara a la duración del fenómeno astronómico, la artista cantó una versión de 2 minutos y 40 segundos, y no los 7 minutos del tema original incluido en el disco Faster than the speed of night.\n4. ¿Y las cabras?\nDurante los eclipses totales de sol, ocurren algunos fenómenos naturales llamativos: la temperatura cae en varios grados, el viento cambia de dirección y los animales cambian sus hábitos, por ejemplo.\nQué efectos tiene un eclipse solar total como el de este lunes sobre la Tierra\nSin embargo, una de las ideas más recurrentes sobre estos eventos es que, cuando la Luna tapa al Sol en pleno día, las cabras se desmayan.\n\nLa periodista de la BBC Shefali Kulkarni le presta sus lentes a una oveja en Oregon.\n\nEs lo que informalmente se llama goatality, un neologismo que combina las palabras en inglés goat (\"cabra\") y fatality (\"fatalidad\").\nPara poner a prueba esta teoría, la periodista de la BBC Shefali Kulkarni viajó al condado de McMinnville, en Oregón (noroeste de EE.UU.), a una granja de cabras donde se organizaba una fiesta de observación.\nY el periodista Dave Jorgenson del diario The Washington Post hizo lo propio desde otra granja en Tennessee (sureste de EE.UU.).\nComo muestran las imágenes de ambos medios, los periodistas se divirtieron mucho, pero la teoría de la goatality demostró ser falsa.\n\nFuente: www.bbc.com",

"La explicación más factible es que la rotación del núcleo es un vestigio del período en que se formó el Sol, hace unos 4.600 millones de años", señaló Roger Ulrich, profesor emérito de la Universidad de California en Los Ángeles (EE.UU.) y uno de los autores del nuevo estudio publicado en la revista Astronomy and Astrophysics. Ulrich ha estudiado el interior del Sol durante más de 40 años. "Es muy emocionante pensar que hemos descubierto una reliquia de la formación del Sol", señaló el científico. Cuando el Sol nació La rotación del núcleo solar puede dar pistas del proceso de formación de nuestra estrella. Luego del nacimiento del Sol, el viento solar probablemente hizo más lenta la rotación de la parte externa del Sol, según Ulrich.  La mayor velocidad de rotación en el núcleo del Sol puede ser un vestigio de la formación de nuestra estrella. La rotación también puede tener un impacto en las manchas solares, según el experto. Las manchas solares son áreas del Sol con una temperatura más baja que sus alrededores y gran actividad magnética. Una sola mancha puede llegar a tener un diámetro similar al de la Tierra. Oscilaciones Los investigadores analizaron ondas acústicas en la superficie de la atmósfera solar, algunas de las cuales penetran el núcleo e interactúan con otras ondas.  La temperatura del núcleo es de cerca de 15 millones de grados centígrados. En la superficie del Sol la temperatura es de unos 5.500 grados centígrados. Las áreas blancas en la imagen corresponden a las zonas donde el campo magnético es más fuerte. Midiendo las ondas acústicas, los científicos determinaron con precisión el tiempo que tarda una de esas ondas en viajar de ida y vuelta desde la superficie al centro del Sol. Los cálculos se basaron en datos de 16 años de observaciones con un instrumento denominado GOLF, Global Oscillations at Low Frequency u Oscilaciones Globales en Frecuencias Bajas. El instrumento se encuentra a su vez en una sonda especial llamada SoHO, Solar and Heliospheric Observatory, Observatorio Solar y Heliosférico, un proyecto conjunto de la NASA y la Agencia Espacial Europea. 15 millones de grados El núcleo también se diferencia de la superficie en otro sentido. Pero esta masa se está reduciendo a gran velocidad: la estrella está perdiendo material a medida que se expande hacia afuera en su última fase de vida, antes de convertirse en una supernova que estallará liberando su gas en una gran explosión final.  El grado de detalle obtenido fue posible gracias al Very Large Telescope del ESO, un instrumento único que suma la luz de cuatro telescopios para crear uno virtual con un elevadísimo nivel de resolución. Con las imágenes captadas por el Very Large Telescope (VLTI) -un instrumento que combina la luz de hasta cuatro telescopios para crear uno virtual con una resolución equivalente a la de un espejo de 200 metros- los astrónomos trazaron el primer mapa de velocidades del material en la atmósfera. Este mapa mostró turbulencias inesperadas que no pueden explicarse por procesos habituales como la convección de corrientes. La enigmática estrella que pierde brillo y obsesiona a los que creen en vida extraterrestre Esto hace pensar que son producto de un proceso nuevo, cuyas reglas aún se desconocen, dicen los investigadores. Nueva ventana a las estrellas ¿Pero por qué estrellas como Antares pierden masa tan rápidamente cuando están en la última etapa de su evolución? Esta es una pregunta que astrónomos se han estado haciendo desde hace más de 50 años, y que el equipo liderado por Keiichi Ohnaka, investigador de la Universidad Católica del Norte de Chile, espera responder con ayuda de estas imágenes. Taking vitamin B12 and B6 supplements – previously thought to protect against cancer – is associated with a two to fourfold increase in lung cancer risk, according to a new study. Researchers at Ohio State University found that the risk was increased only in men, and was even higher in current smokers. With 46 percent of adults in the UK reported to consume these vitamins as part of a regular multivitamin tablet, should we be concerned? The researchers asked over 77,000 people how often they took these B vitamins, the dosage, and their normal diet over the previous ten years. The accuracy of recall over such a long time is questionable. Many of us would struggle to recall our diet and supplement use over the last few days, let alone ten years. To compound this problem, the food-frequency questionnaire that was used for this study was actually devised for use with a different population – the Women's Health Initiative, which studied postmenopausal women in the 1990s. The researchers don't tell us whether they checked that this questionnaire actually works with men. To do this, they could have compared the dietary information obtained by questionnaire from a sample of their population with the gold-standard method of dietary assessment, that is, a weighed-food record. And, ideally, they should have checked serum levels of the vitamins in a sample of their population to see whether they matched with reported intakes. The formulation of supplements may also have changed over the years. The outcome After six years, the researchers checked in on the participants to see if they had developed lung cancer. After controlling for many factors that are known to influence risk of cancer, the researchers reported a 30 percent increase in lung cancer risk associated with the use of vitamin B12 (taken as an individual vitamin) and a 40 percent increase in risk for those who took B6. This effect was not seen for B vitamins from multivitamins or in women. For men who took high doses from individual supplements for ten years, the risk of lung cancer almost doubled, and was higher still in men who smoked. The doses said to increase lung cancer risk in this study were greater than 20mg (milligrams) per day of vitamin B6, and greater than 55μg (micrograms) per day of vitamin B12 taken as individual supplements. These are massive doses compared to the amounts found in the average multivitamin tablets (which are set according to the recommended daily intakes for adult males in the UK at around 1.4mg for B6 and 1.5μg for B12). In fact, the dose of B6 that was proposed to increase risk of cancer in this study is close to the tolerable upper intake levels set in Europe for the maximum allowed dose in over-the-counter supplements (25mg per day). Association not cause It is also worth bearing in mind that observational studies, such as this, don't provide proof of causation. There may be an entirely different factor that is affecting the risk of cancer, which just happens to be related to supplement usage. Although the researchers did their best to account for known factors that influence cancer risk (such as age and history of lung disease) there may be other yet-to-be-discovered factors. To prove that these vitamins directly cause cancer, an experimental design such as a randomised controlled trial would be needed. But if massive doses of individual supplements of B6 and B12 do indeed promote cancer, this is not the first time that mega doses of vitamins have been seen to cause harm. Nutrients that are likely to prevent cancer when eaten in the form of foods, may cause harm when taken as purified supplements. For example, beta-carotene is the precursor form of vitamin A, which is found in fruits and vegetables. Eating plenty of fruit and vegetables containing beta-carotene can help to prevent cancers, but taking high dose supplements of it is linked with an increase in incidence of lung cancer in smokers. The World Cancer Research Fund recommends that, in order to prevent cancer, we should aim to meet nutritional needs through diet alone and not depend on supplements. Besides, current dietary intakes of vitamins B6 and B12 in the UK give no cause for concern. Most of us don't need any extra vitamin B6 or B12, let alone the high doses of vitamins B6 or B12 examined in this study. It is easy to get enough B6 from a varied and balanced diet. Good sources include chicken, fish, liver, pork, eggs, milk, soybeans, wholegrains, peanuts and walnuts. A high intake of B6 from food may be associated with lower risk of cancer. When vitamin B12 supplements are needed Omnivores should have no difficulty in getting enough B12 from foods such as meat, chicken, fish, eggs, cheese and milk. Those of us looking to reduce our dependence on animal products, in order to reduce carbon emissions, might need to consider supplementation. There are also people with conditions such as pernicious anaemia who will need supplementation with vitamin B12, and this may take the form of injections. Some older people, and those with reduced stomach acid will also benefit from extra B12. People taking vitamin B12 for these reasons, as recommended by a doctor, registered nutritionist or dietitian, should continue to take their B12 supplements. They should rest assured that many people with pernicious anaemia have been taking doses around 1,000μg per day for prolonged periods, to compensate for impaired vitamin B12 absorption, without any apparent harm. | body | Vitamin B Has Been Linked to Lung Cancer, But You Probably Don't Need to Worry  A Babylonian clay tablet dating back 3,700 years has been identified as the world's oldest and most accurate trigonometric table, suggesting the Babylonians beat the ancient Greeks to the invention of trigonometry by over 1,000 years. The tablet, known as Plimpton 322, was discovered in the early 1900s in what is now southern Iraq, but researchers have always been baffled about what its purpose was. Thanks to a team from the University of South Wales (UNSW) in Australia, the mystery may have been solved. More than that, the Babylonian method of calculating trigonometric values could have something to teach mathematicians today. "Our research reveals that Plimpton 322 describes the shapes of right-angle triangles using a novel kind of trigonometry based on ratios, not angles and circles," says one of the researchers, Daniel Mansfield. "It is a fascinating mathematical work that demonstrates undoubted genius."  Experts established early on that Plimpton 322 showed a list of Pythagorean triples, sets of numbers that fit trigonometry models for calculating the sides of a right-angled triangle. The big debate has been about what those triples were actually for. Are they just a series of exercises for teaching, for example? Or are they something more profound? Babylonian mathematics used a base 60 or sexagesimal system (like the minute markers on a clock face), rather than the base 10 or decimal system we use today. By applying Babylonian mathematical models, the researchers were able to show that the tablet would originally have had 6 columns and 38 rows. They also show how the mathematicians of the time could've used the Babylonian system to come up with the numbers on the tablet. The researchers suggest that the tablet may well have been used by ancient scribes to make calculations for building palaces, temples, and canals. But if the new study is right, then the Greek astronomer Hipparchus, who lived about 120 BC, is not the father of trigonometry that he's long been regarded as. Scholars date the tablet to around 1822-1762 BC. What's more, because of the way the Babylonians did their maths and geometry, it's the most accurate trigonometric table as well as the oldest. The reason is that a sexagesimal system has more exact fractions than a decimal system, which means less rounding up. Whereas only two numbers can divide 10 with nothing left over – 2 and 5 – a base 60 system has far more. Cleaner fractions means fewer approximations and more accurate maths, and the researchers suggest we can learn from it today. "This means it has great relevance for our modern world," says Mansfield. "Babylonian mathematics may have been out of fashion for more than 3,000 years, but it has possible practical applications in surveying, computer graphics and education." They also show how the mathematicians of the time could've used the Babylonian system to come up with the numbers on the tablet.\n\nThe researchers suggest that the tablet may well have been used by ancient scribes to make calculations for building palaces, temples, and canals.\n\nBut if the new study is right, then the Greek astronomer Hipparchus, who lived about 120 BC, is not the father of trigonometry that he's long been regarded as. Scholars date the tablet to around 1822-1762 BC.\n\nWhat's more, because of the way the Babylonians did their maths and geometry, it's the most accurate trigonometric table as well as the oldest.\n\nThe reason is that a sexagesimal system has more exact fractions than a decimal system, which means less rounding up. | body | Most of The World Could Be 100% Powered With Renewables by 2050  Almost three quarters of the world's countries could be powered entirely by renewable energy sources by 2050 – if we want it badly enough, that is. That's according to an ambitious new 2050 roadmap that calculates a move to an emissions-free future would create millions of jobs, cut trillions in health and climate costs, and help save the planet from global warming. The estimates, produced by a team of almost 30 scientists, are based on an assessment of the capabilities of 139 countries to transition to 100 percent wind, water, and solar power in the next three and a bit decades. While such a far-reaching overhaul of existing energy infrastructure goes beyond what the UN's Paris climate agreement (COP21) actually calls for, the researchers say there are compelling reasons for going all in sooner rather than later. "Our findings suggest that the benefits are so great that we should accelerate the transition to wind, water, and solar, as fast as possible," says one of the team, Mark Delucchi from the University of California, Berkeley, "by retiring fossil-fuel systems early wherever we can."  That's because doing so wouldn't just create new jobs in renewables – a net increase of more than 24 million full-time positions is anticipated – it would also make us healthier sooner, with less fossil fuel emissions polluting the atmosphere. The team says that reduction alone could cut deaths due to air pollution by as much as 4.6 million premature fatalities annually. But perhaps even more importantly in the long run, making the switch could lock in COP21's goal of keeping the rise in global temperatures to less than 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. The research, which in an earlier form was initially presented to world leaders at COP21 in 2015, builds upon a previous US-only roadmap that showed how the 50 US states could make the same kind of renewables transition by 2050. Both studies were spearheaded by Stanford University's Mark Z.
