body### Author's note >I no longer hold some of the opinions I professed in this post. These opinions include the pseudo-science status of more than two genders. I have come to recognize that there is scientific evidence to back up gender as a social construct separate from biological sex. I'd like to extend my sincere apologies to readers who may be offended by my past self. Unfortunately, because of the permanent nature of the Steem blockchain, I cannot delete this post or update it.

body### A note a year later: > The goal I set for myself in this post was overly ambitious. While I am proud of my writing in the English language, I am nowhere near as good of a writer as I could be, even in my own language. As such, I have set aside my goal of posting bilingually, at least for the time being. > >Perhaps at a later day, I will return to this goal, but for now I am focusing on improving my skills in one language. I've learned some lessons about being overzealous in posting intent to do something, especially since I seem to lack follow through. This was the third time I announced a goal that did not come to fruition, and from now on out, I will be leaving announcements out of my feed.

body
https://s.hdnux.com/photos/73/32/25/15574351/3/1024x1024.jpg [[Image by Michael Ciaglo at the Houston Chronicle](https://www.chron.com/news/houston-texas/houston/article/What-we-know-about-the-Santa-Fe-High-School-12925369.php#photo-15574351)]
Today there was yet another shooting at an American school. As always, the public focus has shifted to one of two prevention strategies: gun control or more aggressive treatment of mental illness. It’s always struck me as strange that the focus is always one of the two, not both. The school shooting epidemic calls for a multifaceted approach, as most complicated issues do. Gun control alone will not prevent these atrocities. Neither will mental health treatment. Even putting the two together, there’s more we can do. ## Glorification of violence Society is morbidly obsessed with violence. Our television shows have it, our movies have it, even our children's shows now contain violence. It permeates every level of society. So of course, it shocks nobody when the news media covers school shootings with such depth and detail. ***But should they?*** A [study](http://www.apa.org/news/press/releases/2016/08/media-contagion-effect.pdf) by Dr Jennifer Johnston at Western New Mexico University concluded that many mass shooters were inspired by others they read about in the news. They also hope to become as infamous as the ones before them. Johnston said fame as a central motivator could explain why so many youths commit mass shootings. Speaking to the [American Psychological Association](http://www.apa.org/news/press/releases/2016/08/media-contagion.aspx), Johnston claimed that an agreement among major news outlets to withhold the names of mass shooters could result in a “dramatic reduction in mass shootings in one to two years”. The idea will be a hard sell to media outlets. They, perhaps rightly so, feel a duty to publish all the details that arise surrounding subjects of public interest. They might even feel that the suggestion itself is a proposal to censor the press. But it’s not. It’s a furtherance of the public interest. There is a distinction between *public interest* and *the public’s interest*. Arguably, the public may ***want*** to know the name of a mass shooter, but the question is really “do they ***need*** to know?” In what way does the knowledge of a name enhance the understanding of the story? Details can be published in relation to the person without naming them. I think the key aspect of this agreement is that it should not be mandated by the government. They probably could legislate it with legal justification from the national security exemption to the first amendment, but it would cause protest and wouldn’t result in positive change. The agreement has to be made by news executives. It has to be done voluntarily. ## Gun control I wrote a [post](https://steemit.com/@youngjae/an-introspective-opinion-on-gun-control) a while back that outlined my views on gun control. I stand by that post. For the sake of this post, I’ll briefly reiterate the views here, including elaborations I made in the comments. Mandatory psychological evaluations would keep guns out of the hands of mentally disturbed individuals most likely to carry out mass shootings. Extensive background checks, with a streamlined database easily accessible across state lines would also help prevent guns from getting into the hands of violent criminals. Blockchain technology might be an effective way to keep this decentralized but easily accessible, but that’s a topic for another time. Parent accountability for the use of their guns in mass murders is also a must. Many school shootings are committed using firearms belonging to the shooters parents. Basic precautions taken by the parents may have been able to prevent these. All out gun restrictions are not the solution. Criminals have ways of getting guns outside of legal systems that would just be strengthened by the lack of a legal market. This is similar to prohibition and alcohol. The problem isn’t people having guns, it’s certain people having guns. ## Mental health Obviously, metal health is a serious issue. Most school shooters have some form of mental illness, whether it’s diagnosed or not. The study by Johnston also cited depression as a predisposing factor to becoming a mass shooter. In America, little has been done to treat people with mental illness. Many Americans have routine visits to doctors to check up on their physical health, but do nothing to maintain their mental health. This is in part due to lingering stigma around mental illness. Most mentally ill people are productive members of society. Being mentally ill doesn’t make you lesser, just as being physically ill doesn’t. We don’t need to shun those with mental illness, we need to help them. As a society, we do a poor job of this. We isolate people, and label them “weird” or “crazy”. People avoid treatment for fear of being labeled that way. Issues that could be addressed by mental health professionals wind up being buried and festering out of fear of being judged. It is our judgement and isolation of people different than us that leads people with mental illness to the breaking point. Combined with influence from the infamy of other mass shooters and the ease of access to guns, we are breeding killers. It’s not an issue a single change can fix. We have to come together and make drastic changes to all areas of our society. If we can’t, tragedies will keep happening. Nobody wants that. --- *What do you think? Am I nuts? Did I overlook something? Agree or disagree, I'd love to hear what you think in the comments, my only request is to maintain a sense of [civility](https://busy.org/@youngjae/an-anomaly-in-a-world-of-keyboard-warriors)*.

body
https://s.hdnux.com/photos/73/32/25/15574351/3/1024x1024.jpg [[Image by Michael Ciaglo at the Houston Chronicle](https://www.chron.com/news/houston-texas/houston/article/What-we-know-about-the-Santa-Fe-High-School-12925369.php#photo-15574351)]
Am I nuts? It’s a term most people who have been on the internet are familiar with, like the word “troll”. The idea being that a person is more likely to make threats or be offensive behind the safety of a screen. I’ve witnessed the phenomenon many times while reading comments on Reddit or Youtube, though I’ve yet to see it on Steemit. I always wonder what inspires a person to behave in such a way. Don’t they know that everything they do on the internet is permanent? Don’t they know that making threats is a felony? A sense of anonymity is always the cause people point to, and of course that plays into it. In real life, there are social consequences for such behavior, but online all you get is attention. Unless, of course, somebody takes you seriously and reports you to the FBI. I live in political circles of the internet, where debate and dialog are neglected but trolling and dogma are rampant. Politics are getting more divisive and less civil, but debate and dialog have long been essential to democracy and politics. ### Being an anomaly I strive to be the anomaly, the voice of, not always compromise, but at least civility. I always try to hear people out, and never attack people on their beliefs. When I respond directly to people, I often use qualifiers like "I think". This isn't good strategy for debate, but it helps show that I'm not attacking them. I also try to focus on facts, rather than emotional appeals. A heavy dose of logical reasoning doesn’t hurt either. In real life I’m much more dogmatic, which can be fine. I make effort to be more civil in text because it’s easier for a person to stop reading than to walk away from a conversation. I also get more time to choose my words in text than I do aloud. That allows me to write in a way that won’t turn people off of my ideas. This is possible without sacrificing ideological integrity. You can debate opinions and trade facts in a way that is not based upon character attacks. It’s not even hard. The trick is to be open to being wrong. ### Civility is a win-win-win situation In a debate between two private individuals, there is little consequence. The worst possible outcome is learning. The best possible outcome, oddly enough, is also learning. Allow me to explain: If the opposing argument is compelling enough to change your mind, you learned something new. This is arguably the best outcome, at least with regard to learning. It takes a lot of new information to change a person’s mind. On the other hand, if neither argument prevails then you have gained an understanding for how a person views the world. You can use this to have a more open mind, and to address others views with sensitivity in your daily life. Those with an interest in debate can use this outcome to conduct more research to win the argument the next time it arises. The last option in a debate is, of course, victory. This is the most satisfactory end to a debate, yet, it is the least productive in terms of learning. You have likely learned little about the subject of debate. The only thing you may have learned is how to win the debate with others, should it arise again. ### Civility and falsehoods Being civil does not require the acceptance of falsities. If you are confronted with an argument based upon false information, you have a duty to correct the inaccuracy. It is difficult to flat out tell somebody they are wrong without sounding impolite, but I’m sure it can be done. I struggle with this myself. If confronted with a falsehood, my go-to remark is a rhetorical * what the fuck are you talking about? * Obviously, this is not the best method to maintain a civil discussion. I haven’t ever had the opportunity to correct an inaccuracy. Online, I have a bad habit of ignoring people who believe falsities as lost causes. In person, it’s much more difficult to correct someone. When I’m talking to somebody face to face, I don’t have time to research facts before they throw next argument at me. I can’t attest to what works for corrections in practice, but I can say what I would attempt. First, I'd try to discern a source that is trustworthy to the believer of false information. If I could find one, I would provide information from that source that refutes their belief. If I cannot tell what sources of information they trust, I would use a source that has a good reputation across the spectrum of politics. For this, I would avoid publications such as Fox News, CNN and the like. Most people trust Snopes, but there are other good sources that many find agreeable. I also use Reuters or the Associated Press as reliable news sources. Both agencies license articles to major publications on all sides of politics and are renowned for their lack of bias. Fox News and the Huffington Post both run Reuters and Associated Press stories, even though they are known for having opposite biases. Sometimes it is impossible to convince somebody that something is untrue. In that case, it is best to end the debate in as polite a way as possible. You must also make it clear that you are not conceding the facts. That part is a balancing act. ### For the love of God, be civil If I find myself getting too emotional in a debate, I take a moment to breathe and let go of my emotional reaction. It’s important to remember that you have this luxury online. Arguing on the basis of emotion will never lead to a productive discussion, only deep disagreements on morality and ideology. Saying something in the heat of the moment is the easiest way to slip up and say something that is either incorrect or counterproductive. If your goal is to blow off steam, don’t seek out debate, journal. After you’re satisfied, you can either go through and rewrite everything for later publication or burn/delete it. Using another person to vent, unless agreed upon, is selfish and counterproductive. It may seem harmless if the person is a stranger, but hostility could reaffirm whatever prejudices they already hold It’s important to remember that personal attacks have no place in civil discourse. Emotional appeals, while having a place, are unlikely to change minds. Arguments should *always* be rooted in fact or logical reasoning in the absence of hard information. If you begin resorting to insults and emotion in a debate, you should take the opportunity to listen to what others have to say. Opinions on issues like laws and governance should not be held out of pure emotion. It is equally important to remember that some questions of morality are subjective. Things like these are difficult to debate on the basis of fact and often those who try deteriorate into personal attacks. You have to rise above it. Be an anomaly in a world of keyboard warriors.

bodyGreat tool. I spent a little while browsing around on it and I have a little feature suggestion: add a way to change the post links to direct to other steem interfaces than just steemit. I use busy.org and it would be nice to be able to open posts on my preferred interface, instead of defaulting to steemit.

But seriously, I’d like to thank my mother for putting up with and providing for me all these years. There’s a lot of things wrong with the holiday, but the idea of honoring mothers is not one of them. ### Every day should be Mother's Day ### >Today it is Mother's Day in Finland, another one of those manufactured and unnecessary days that are rather meaningless yet, celebrated. >@tarazkp >> When I first read this in [Taraz’ article](https://busy.org/@tarazkp/individual-roads-to-freedom-of-society). I had to do a double take. At first I thought he was trying to say that mothers don’t deserve praise for the job they do. Nothing I’ve seen him write would make me expect this view from him, but then I stumbled upon a [clarification he made](https://busy.org/@tarazkp/re-adeyemidrey-re-tarazkp-individual-roads-to-freedom-of-society-20180513t072519546z) in the comments of his post. >If you need a day to remember the importance of mothers, you may not find them so important after all. My wife is important every day. >> I was a little relieved, because this view is much more in tune with my own views. Mothers are important, and it’s important to celebrate them and the sacrifices they make whenever the opportunity arises. If you need a holiday to remind you to do this, you probably need to reexamine your values and how you treat your mother. Spending a little time with her isn’t difficult, unless you live far away. But even that is no excuse. We live in the age of technology where everyone is a phone call away. I’m not the best son, I’ll admit it. I’ve caused more than a fair amount of stress to my mother, whether it was through my rebellious teen years or my constant need to clash with her opinions (even if I actually agree). But I still make an effort to do things that make her happy. We have traditions together that help keep us close, and even though some of them aren’t my favorite activities, I enjoy them anyways because it’s a way to spend time with her and make her happy. Over the years, I’ve come to enjoy them, though it wasn’t always that way. Before I was a teenager, I enjoyed them, but I hit a rebel phase where I thought I was too cool for my mom. As a side note, *nobody* is too cool for their mom.
![20180505_084027.jpg](https://gateway.ipfs.io/ipfs/QmdzJzzLUuDq2TBiKUbTLoB34efABysmwZSkbLFrQ52tPW) *The front of the hardware store*
One of the traditions my mom and I have done for as long as I can remember is going to a spring garden sale at a local hardware store. The give away free pancake breakfasts to everyone who attends. Of course, the whole thing is a loss-leader to get people into the store to buy things, but it makes for a fun tradition. We don’t always buy things, because that isn’t the point. The point is to go out together. Not everything we do is planned. We go out to breakfast or get coffee, or sometimes just go on walks together. You don’t need traditions to have a good relationship. I suppose I don’t have room to act holier-than-thou over my relationship with my mom, I’m only 18 years old, so I still live with her. That makes things easier. I like to think that things won’t change after I move out, but it’ll require more effort. I’ll see her less regularly, but, since it’s important to me, I’ll make sure to save space for her in my schedule. ### The bastardization of the holiday ### As with everything, especially things that apply to large populations of people, Mother’s Day has been corrupted by consumerism. Companies like Hallmark use any holiday as a way to guilt people into buying cards. Jewelry companies use them to sell jewelry. Florists use them to sell flowers. And so we’ve grown to link thankfulness and appreciation with gifts. There’s nothing wrong with giving a gift, but if the gift is a mass produced card or some other store-bought item, the act becomes disingenuous. There is little emotion involved in picking out a card with words that somebody else wrote, or buying a bracelet that somebody else made. An ideal gift should come from the heart, not the pocketbook. It should be something that had time and thought put into it. That’s not to say that I, or anyone else, don’t appreciate store-bought gifts. We do, or at least I do. But a handmade item or a shared experience always feels more thoughtful. Even if we never use something, it shows care and genuine affection. It shows that we were worth the effort. ### “Choices don’t deserve praise” ###
https://www.youtube.com/embed/cRiGtHTJb0A*The video that received the comment [[Video by SNL on Youtube](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cRiGtHTJb0A)]*
A while after reading the article I mentioned above, I was catching up on last night’s episode of [Saturday Night Live](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cRiGtHTJb0A) and stumbled upon a Youtube comment that made me once again question my faith in humanity. >I love how they always push the fact like being a Mom is not a choice, infact its more of a choice than being a father >l also love how they push the fact that being a Mom mean you should be praise what? You made the choice to be a parent now you have to deal with the responsibility & hardship that come's with that, the kids shouldn't have to thank you for shit >> This time, there was no relief, in fact the commenter further attempted to rationalize their views, but simply came off as an angsty teenager. Maybe I would have said it in the past, and would find it later and regret writing it. Perhaps the original poster will feel the same way years from now. The idea they were putting forward was basically that because one made a choice, they do not deserve praise for what they do with that choice. Putting aside the fact that some mothers may not have intended to have a child and instead felt morally obligated to carry out the pregnancy after finding out they were pregnant, motherhood is a tough task. At my age, and as a male, I can’t say that from experience, but I can tell by witnessing my own mother at work. Motherhood isn’t a hobby, it’s a full time job. It isn’t without consequence either. Quite literally, it puts another human’s life in your hands. When you combine this with another full time job, something that isn’t uncommon, the difficulty and wear on a person multiplies. As rewarding as it is, that makes motherhood all the more commendable. One may get into motherhood for selfish reasons, but I doubt that one can go through the entire process that way. It becomes about the child not about the parent. Any human service has an element of self sacrifice and reward attached to it. Just because there is a reward involved doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be thankful. Mother’s Day is just a reminder of the sacrifice and effort that went into shaping us into the humans we are. One day is the least we can do for our mothers. Those who fail to see that are the reason we need this holiday-- to show our moms that everything they did wasn’t a waste of effort and time.

You made the choice to be a parent now you have to deal with the responsibility & hardship that come's with that, the kids shouldn't have to thank you for shit\n>>\nThis time, there was no relief, in fact the commenter further attempted to rationalize their views, but simply came off as an angsty teenager. Maybe I would have said it in the past, and would find it later and regret writing it. Perhaps the original poster will feel the same way years from now.\n\nThe idea they were putting forward was basically that because one made a choice, they do not deserve praise for what they do with that choice. Putting aside the fact that some mothers may not have intended to have a child and instead felt morally obligated to carry out the pregnancy after finding out they were pregnant, motherhood is a tough task. At my age, and as a male, I can’t say that from experience, but I can tell by witnessing my own mother at work.\n\nMotherhood isn’t a hobby, it’s a full time job. It isn’t without consequence either. Quite literally, it puts another human’s life in your hands.\n\nWhen you combine this with another full time job, something that isn’t uncommon, the difficulty and wear on a person multiplies. As rewarding as it is, that makes motherhood all the more commendable. One may get into motherhood for selfish reasons, but I doubt that one can go through the entire process that way. It becomes about the child not about the parent.\n\nAny human service has an element of self sacrifice and reward attached to it. Just because there is a reward involved doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be thankful.\n\nMother’s Day is just a reminder of the sacrifice and effort that went into shaping us into the humans we are. One day is the least we can do for our mothers. Those who fail to see that are the reason we need this holiday-- to show our moms that everything they did wasn’t a waste of effort and time.",
