      "body": "<center>I've been making a list of subjects for 360 shot films since I got my Insta360Pro a few weeks ago, and one thing I wanted to try was putting the camera on stage during a performance to simulate the perspective of a \"super fan\" who's standing next to the performer.  Here's a full 50-minute set on Youtube.  You can watch in Chrome or with your phone (with the Youtube App) and use it as a Magic Window, or you can use a Google Cardboard-style viewer to experience it via first person in your Head Mounted Display.</center>\n\n<center>https://youtu.be/SrjUfek2Iqo</center>\n\n<center>When my friend and musician Matt Jaffe told me that he was playing a show at the Sweetwater Music Hall, I saw a great opportunity to make a test. We put the camera right between Matt and the bass player, just at the edge of the stage. Since you can either watch the performance or you can watch the show from the perspective of the performer, you're having an experience that would be impossible with a traditional performance film.  </center>\n\n<center>LESSONS LEARNED:  Putting the camera on the stage right next to the performers is a unique way to present a show in which the audience is getting into it as much as the band.  That might not always be the case, but at this show there was a lot of enthusiasm so it was worth it.  (In cases in which you'd have a bunch of static people sitting or standing in front of a stage, that wouldn't be a very compelling case for 360 video.) The camera is a proxy for a \"super fan\" who has access to the stage and can experience the enthusiasm coming at the performers... something that a fan very rarely gets to experience.</center>\n\n<center>That said, switching back and forth from the audience view to the performance view requires a lot of head-turning.  This isn't the most optimal way to present some stories, and can cause vestibular fatigue.   </center>\n\n<center>Other lessons:  1) use a LOT of weight bags to reduce camera shake on a stage in which a lot of vibration is happening.  I used twice the number of bags I normally would here, 2) ask the lighting designer to crank the lights up, especially in the house where it would normally be dark.  I had him turn on as many lights as possible, and that provides some depth to what would normally be a very dark area. 3) Use double-system sound for audio.  I turned the input volume of the camera down almost to the minimum just so I'd get enough audio to synchronize sound from external recorders.  I captured my own audio with a mid-side microphone from the back of the room as a safety, and I asked the sound engineer to give me a board mix that I could use to mix the ambient sound with.  Optimally I'd do this with 360 spatial audio, but I'm not at the point of experimenting with that yet. 4) Ask the performers to stay in a zone in which specific lenses had full coverage so that their nominal position on stage wasn't in an 'in-between' point that the stitcher would have to blend using optical flow.</center>\n\n<center>NOTE:  Putting together the 6 camera sequences into one 360 video is the job of the stitching software that comes with your camera.  The software with the Insta360Pro for stitching is fairly basic, and the problem with a shot like this is that the musicians are frequently crossing over the boundary lines from one camera to another.  A third-party stitching software called MistikaVR allows us to dynamically reconfigure each lenses area of coverage to mitigate this effect. To that end, there’s a small art gallery filled with photos from Gary Yost, a series of olive-green Anna’s hummingbirds feeding their young.* </center>\n\n<center>To make a long story short, I made a video for them that describes how, if you're a celebrity and you want to avoid the paparazzi in there public terminal, there's a way out.  You drive to a highly secure area, have a private suite of your own to wait in, you get your own private TSA and CBP customs officers and you're driven directly to the plane to board at the last minute.  There are good reasons for doing this... putting celebrities in the public terminal at LAX causes a huge hubbub that's distracting and unsafe due to the celebrity-obsessed culture we live in.  Sign of the times.</center>\n\n<center>https://youtu.be/Efm8bktWrOU</center>\n\n<center>The entire film was shot on very simple equipment:  Panasonic GH5 with the Panny 12-35 lens, a small Zhiyun Crane gimbal and a little travel tripod.  Given that I had no control over lighting, I'd say that dealing with the light was the most challenging aspect of the shoot.  Mid-day sun on the tarmac is unforgiving and dealing with the extremes of low light inside the suite vs the bright sunlight outside was brutal.  The experience of driving around those big jets on the runway was kind of nuts... and required massive security clearances. December 2017, it's something I've been leading up to all my life.  (For more on that, [here's my Wikipedia page](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gary_Yost).)  As Mac user I never had the hardware power to do it until December 2017 when the iMac Pro was released, but 3D immersive imagery has been a huge part of my career, from the mid 1980s when I spearheaded the development of Atari-based 3D animation systems, to the 1990s when I led the development of the most popular 3D content creation system in the world... Autodesk's 3ds Max.  But my first love was always telling stories with film (initially 8mm movies in school) and photographs (my dad and I built a darkroom together when I was 11 years old).  After I sold my company to Autodesk in the late 90s, I rekindled my love of analog image-making, first exploring digital photography and then graduating to storytelling with video.  I built a successful career as a maker of short films, did the film festival circuit and won a bunch of awards.  And in 2015 I bought a google cardboard unit and started to become amazed by some of the immersive content that was available.  But I was jealous that I couldn't make any of these films on the Mac!</center>\n\n<center>I'm now happily integrating all of the things I've learned over the past 40 years about how to tell stories in all sorts of dimensions, and enthusiastically learning as I go from the pioneers who've been doing the 360 thing for a few years now.</center>\n\n<center>I'm in the process of bringing up a new blog (www.360filmmaking.com) as a way of sharing how I'm re-learning how to make films in this new style... 360 video is much more about choreography around the camera than cinematography and storytelling with the camera.  I'm planning on launching the blog before the end of January 2018 and I'll be writing a meta blog about creating it here on Steemit as I build it out. </center>\n\n<center>Here's my first experimental 360 video... the cast of a local theatrical company singing \"Put a Little Love in Your Heart\" directly to you.  This style of 360 video is not so much about telling a story as it is about putting you into the center of the action.  It's a simple technique and only needs a strong song and cast to pull it off.  </center>\n\n<center>![me directing the action](https://s14.postimg.org/6w2ll8qu9/yost_about_image.jpg)</center>\n\n<center>The most interesting thing for me about this video is that, because the singers come right up to the camera in the 2nd half, I get a visceral feeling that they are singing directly to me.  That, plus the content of the song, which is an instruction to the listener, makes it feel very immersive.  The song choice was important and I was given a few options, finally choosing this one because it had a certain personal immediacy that I thought would work best.  It was a good choice.</center>\n\n<center>LESSONS LEARNED:  1) Have the lighting designer turn up all the lighting instruments.  I was able to record this at a relatively low ISO200.  2) Instruct the performers that when they move into the camera at the end, they should pick a lens and stay in front of that lens as they get closer.  Most of them followed this instruction, mitigating stitching artifacts on performers faces. 3)  It's really important to make this visually interesting... the costumes go a long way towards that.  (there's nothing like good props to help tell a story)</center>\n\n<center>If you have a google cardboard viewer, use the YoutubeVR app to view it in your headset.       "body": "Yes, I'm known to have offbeat opinion. ;) I also don't like the Alexa much - it gives up a lot in colour for the sake of pandering to film nostalgia. Deals very poorly with darker skin tones too, just like film. (Same can be said of Red's Dragon sensor, though I haven't had a look at Helium yet). I prefer the F65 and Varicam 35 vastly. Of course, Alexa's a much better camera than RX 100 V, but my point is, very impressive for the size and price!",

      "body": "That's a funny comparison between the Alexa and an RX100m5.  (!)  Res is not what makes the Arri so great but hey... we're comparing apples to mangos.  I'm not going to give up my Nikon D4 (or D800) and favorite lenses like the 85mm/f.14, but those are never in my pocket.  And I don't carry my RX100 around either because that's a PITA.... my phone is typically the camera that's always with me by default and I would much rather shoot a portrait with the computational \"bokeh\" mode than otherwise.  But of course that's just a matter of taste and I respect your opinion.  :)",
